Fox Fisher: Trans Storyline on BBC 'Casualty': Half a Celebration?
Because there is not enough representation and these are early days, we are impatient to see aspects of ourselves represented in the media. We often get angry or upset when we don’t see ourselves reflected in a mainstream character, no matter how authentic they may be.

Ruth Hunt: International Women's Day 2016

Ruth Hunt: International Women's Day 2016
This International Women’s Day I am whole-heartedly behind the idea of making a #pledgeforparity. We all have a responsibility for working towards gender equality. To do this we need to give everyone the chance to express their experience of gender inequality and to listen to these experiences and to not dismiss them. And we can’t do that unless we understand that there’s no us and them.

Stuart Lorimer: Transgender Opinion: Two-Way "Passing Privilege"
It hadn’t occurred to me before but, thinking about it, it did seem that contained within the notion of being a “trans ally” is the implicit assumption that one is not oneself trans. Did that assumption bother me? I wasn’t sure.

Olly Alexander: Why We Made a Video Celebrating All Different Kinds of Sexuality and Queer Identity
I’ve been wanting to make a video with some of my queer family for a long time and ‘Desire‘ felt like the right time to do it. Every Y&Y video has some similar elements that run through it: magical worlds, symbolism, pretty lights and this time I wanted sex added into that mixture.

Nick King: Mothering Sunday for a Gay Dad – It's Awkward
Against this background of Mothering Sunday hysteria, it’s understandable that over the years various teachers, play school helpers and creche supervisors approach the inevitable ‘for whom should we make the card’ conversation with us with visible dread.

HRC Announces Endorsements for North Carolina Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General

HRC Announces Endorsements for North Carolina Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General

Today, HRC announced its endorsement of Linda Coleman for the office of North Carolina Lieutenant Governor. Dan Forrest currently holds the office. HRC also endorsed Josh Stein for the office of North Carolina Attorney General, which is being vacated by Roy Cooper.

“Working with Roy Cooper as governor, Linda Coleman will help repair the damage inflicted on North Carolina and ensure everyone, including LGBTQ people, can live free from fear of discrimination,” said HRC Senior Vice President of Policy and Political Affairs JoDee Winterhof. “Linda Coleman is a leader who believes in fairness and equality, and HRC is proud to endorse her campaign.”

Coleman’s opponent. Dan Forrest, has been one of Pat McCrory’s biggest defenders on HB2, launching vile smears to defend the dangerous law. Forest ludicrously claimed that HB2 was an “anti-discrimination law,” even though it writes discrimination into state law and prevents local communities from passing their own non-discrimination ordinances.

“Josh Stein understands that everyone, including LGBTQ people, should be able to live free from fear of discrimination,” said Winterhof. “The Human Rights Campaign is proud to endorse Josh Stein, who understands that LGBTQ people deserve equal treatment under the law, nothing more, and nothing less.”

Stein’s opponent, Buck Newton, has been an outspoken defender of the vile and dangerous HB2. While defending the law in April, Newton notoriously told a crowd, “Go home, tell your friends and family who had to work today what this is all about and how hard we must fight to keep our state straight.”

HRC has endorsed pro-equality candidates up and down the ticket this year in North Carolina, including Roy Cooper for Governor, Deborah Ross for U.S. Senate and candidates for the General Assembly.

With a population that exceeds the margin of victory in recent presidential elections, the LGBTQ vote has the power to play a pivotal role in the outcome of elections in North Carolina this year.

Paid for by Human Rights Campaign PAC and authorized by Josh Stein for Attorney General and Linda Coleman for Lt. Gov.

LGBTQ history comes to life in the classroom with Google Expeditions

LGBTQ history comes to life in the classroom with Google Expeditions

Google

In celebration of National Coming Out Day, Google has launched a tour through New York City’s LGBTQ history through Google Expeditions, a virtual reality app that will change the way teachers are able to engage students in classroom learning. Expeditions are collections of virtual reality content–360 degree panoramas and 3D images–that are supplemented with educational annotations, discussion topics, and questions.

Among the existing tour locations, which include places such as Buckingham Palace and the Great Barrier Reef, is ‘Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgender New York City History’–a tour that explores NYC landmarks that have shaped the LGBTQ movement. This tour reveals challenges the LGBTQ community has faced in fighting for civil rights and helps to ignite meaningful classroom dialogue.

GLAAD’s New York City headquarters is one of the destinations on the NYC historical LGBTQ sites tour. This has allowed for a sharing of GLAAD’s history, rooted in the existence of grossly defamatory and sensationalized reporting on HIV and AIDS in the 1980’s, the important work of co-founder, Vito Russo, and a peak into GLAAD’s current work, such as the GLAAD Media Awards.

Here are some examples of questions that follow the virtual step into GLAAD’s office:

Why is it so important that media and entertainment outlets make the LGBTQ community visible and accurately depicted in their work?

What can GLAAD’s formation tell us about the power of localized social movements and the ability for active and informed citizens to make real, lasting change?

The app has also aided in breaking barriers surrounding the integration of LGBTQ content into school curriculums. The tour can also be paired with an extensive lesson plan tailored for student’s grades 9-12. Complete with discussion on important vocabulary and questions that promote critical thinking about the past, present, and future climate of LGBTQ rights, this educational resource is crucial for accelerating acceptance among today’s youth.

To see the tour, download Google Expeditions and search LGBT New York City History.

Preacher’s Wife Speaks Candidly About That Time She Learned Her Husband Was Gay

Preacher’s Wife Speaks Candidly About That Time She Learned Her Husband Was Gay

On the outside, Lydia Meredith appeared to have it all.

As the wife of a popular Atlanta pastor and the mother of three beautiful children, she was a well-respected member in her community. She also had several masters degrees and held a senior position at a Fortune 500 company.

But all was not as it seemed.

“I was one of those preachers’ wives who sat in the pew on many a Sunday morning while my ‘real’ life was a fraud,” Meredith writes in her new memoir The Gay Preacher’s Wife: How My Gay Husband Deconstructed My Life and Reconstructed My Faith.

Several years into her nearly 30 year marriage, Meredith discovered her husband was cheating on her with other men.

“But I stayed,” she writes. “I watched my husband stand in that pulpit on Sunday morning, preaching one message and living out yet another.”

Even after her husband was arrested for soliciting sex with another man, Meredith says she stuck by him, suggesting instead of getting divorced they go to couple’s counseling.

“I loved my husband,” she reveals in an interview with Rolling Outadding that it was often easy to turn a blind eye because she was such a workaholic. “I was a professional woman working as a senior engineer for a Fortune 500 company. I was living my life, married with three children.”

The infidelities and the counseling went on for years. Then in 2005, everything finally crashing down when her husband said he was leaving her for another man.

the-gay-preachers-wife-9781476788937_hr-618x960“He told me he wanted to live the rest of his life as a gay man,” Meredith says. “At that time, I didn’t know he was in a relationship with a man. Most of the time when we were in therapy discussing his struggles it was never a relationship; it was always [just] sex. This particular time it was very different. He had fallen in love with a man.”

Meredith was devastated.

“I prayed my entire young life for God to send me a husband–God always answers my prayers–why did I end up marrying a gay man?”

As all this was happening, she also learned her middle son was gay.

Today, Meredith says she still loves and respects her ex-husband, who now preaches at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Atlanta. The congregation has over 1,000 members and is made up mostly of members of the LGBTQ community. Their gay son also works at the church as the minister of music.

“I want to share some topics that I feel need to be addressed for women who find themselves in situations like I found myself in,” Meredith says, “and to help them and to show them they can get through it.”

She adds that, while it took a long time for her to get over the pain, she doesn’t hold any resentment or ill-will towards her ex-husband today.

“The church needs a new kind of ministry,” she adds, “one steeped in the ministry started by Jesus [and] free of bias, discrimination, hate, or prejudice.”
