George Takei: Star Trek’s Gay Sulu Scene Didn’t Go Far Enough

So now Sulu is gay. But the question remains: is he gay enough?

As you’ve probably heard, the character was given a husband and a kid in the latest Star Trek film, a sort of tribute to George Takei, who originally played him. Despite diversity being a cornerstone of Star Trek since its inception, it took until 2016 for it to show a character in a same-sex relationship. George is still unsatisfied with queer content in the franchise, even after the momentary glimpse of Sulu’s family. “They talked about Sulu becoming gay, but it was such a tentative thing,” he said. “Sulu comes back, picks up the little girl and hugs her, and then puts his arm around a guy and they walk off… not even a kiss. Just hugging the baby and arm around the guy… and it’s over.”

He lamented that Gene Roddenberry wasn’t around to create a queer character — and he has a good point. Gene, if unshackled from meddling studios and his gross lawyer, could have overseen a truly innovative storyline. As it was, The Next Generation tackled nonbinary people in one episode (though it drew protests and was subsequently impossible to find in syndication). And let’s not forget that Star Trek was responsible for TV’s second interracial kiss, after Nancy Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr.

So what would be enough queer content for Star Trek? Well, considering how many women Riker and Kirk have bedded, maybe a main character actually having a romantic scene isn’t too much to ask for.

And of course, there were plans for an episode with a gay crewman, but that was scrapped by the show and later made by fans:

Married GOP Politician Admits to Sexting Male Teen in Video Pleading for His Job: WATCH

Mike Yenni sexting

Last week we reported on Mike Yenni, a Republican politician representing Louisiana’s largest parish, who is being investigated by the FBI for allegedly having sexted a 17-year-old male.

Yenni is married with a three-year-old daughter. He reportedly met the teen at a function at the teen’s Catholic high school when he was mayor of Kenner, Louisiana in 2015. Yenni, 40, is a Louisiana Catholic high school alum though it’s unclear if he attended the same school as the boy with whom he began sexting.

Seventeen is the age of consent in Louisiana. According to the teen, Yenni was introduced to him by a mutual friend who was 19 at the time.

Yenni has since released a video admitting he sexted with the teen and pleading with the people of Jefferson Parish for his job.

Says Yenni in the clip:

“I believe you deserve the truth from me directly. Last summer I was old enough to know better, but I guess I was still young enough to do something stupid. I chose to send improper texts to a young man. I won’t go into details out of respect for the rights and privacy of all parties. I made a bad decision. I regret my actions. I apologize to the families involved and anyone who I embarrassed. Especially my own family and the people of Jefferson. Now I will work every day to prove that good people can rise from a bad decision. I want to reassure the citizens of Jefferson that I never abused or misused my powers as a public official. And I’m certainly not afraid of the future, because I’m smart enough to never repeat the past.”

Watch:

Since the video was released and the sexting scandal came to light, two cities in Jefferson Parish have called for Yenni to step down. Also, “three Kenner council members have told Yenni to quit. Assessor Tom Capella, Clerk of Court Jon Gegenheimer, Coroner Gerry Cvitanovich and Sheriff Newell Normand also called for Yenni’s resignation.”

NOLA.com reports:

After learning about the recall petition, Yenni released a statement Wednesday afternoon reiterating his stance that he never “abused or misused” his office.

“I can hope the people of Jefferson will afford me the opportunity to prove that I will separate my personal challenge from my public responsibility, and that I can rise above this,” Yenni said.

As we reported earlier:

The young man whom Yenni allegedly sexted, now 19, spoke to WWL-TV and said that at one point Yenni came to see him at a mall food court where he worked. The pair allegedly met in a bathroom and Yenni gave the young man a pair of designer underwear and also kissed him.

Text messaging between the pair got increasingly explicit, according to the teen, and Yenni told the young man he wanted him naked.

More from WWL-TV:

Days later, Yenni writes to ask the 17-year-old if he’s worn the underwear Yenni bought him. Yenni says he wants to see him model it.

Then Yenni texts the teen to say he wants to perform a sex act on him that night.

The youth, who is openly gay and is now in college, said in an interview with WWL-TV that he wants to expose Yenni’s behavior because he finds it disturbing.

While the youth was initially flattered and intrigued by Yenni’s overtures, he said the texts and phone conversations began to make him uncomfortable, such as one proposing three-way sex with him and the 19-year-old mutual friend.

“He asked me to go with him to his house in Oxford (Mississippi),” the youth said. Records show Yenni owns an apartment there. “Also, the way he would describe the sexual things he wanted to do to me. And he asked me to be a secretary or assistant in his office; that way I could be with him and not be questioned.”

The FBI is investigating Yenni’s behavior for reasons other than the age of the teen (as noted earlier, 17 is the age of consent).

According to one expert, the FBI may charge him with a federal law that aims to protect children under 18 from “obscenity.” This law prohibits “the transmission of any comment, request, suggestion, proposal, image, or other communication which is obscene or child pornography, knowing that the recipient of the communication is under 18 years of age, regardless of whether the maker of such communication placed the call or initiated the communication.”

Ben Carson: Gay Marriage Will Lead to ‘Mass Killings’ and ‘Utter Chaos’

Ben Carson gay marriage

Former Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson says that opposition to same-sex marriage is the only thing preventing the U.S. from descending into “utter chaos.”

Speaking last Friday at the Pensmore National Symposium on Religious Liberty at the College of the Ozarks, Missouri, Carson urged his audience to be strong in their faith against an “ever-growing government.” Failure to take a strong stand against government, he warned, will lead to mass killings. “The peace we experience now,” he added, “will be a memory only.”

According to the Springfield News-Leader, at a press conference following his speech, Carson explained that the carnage would be caused by “the whole gay marriage issue.”

“Why must they change [the definition of marriage]? I believe the reason is, if you can change the word of God in one area, then you can change it in every area. It’s the camel’s nose under the tent, and it will just be an avalanche of one thing after the other.

“We won’t have anything that we can use as our reference point because we will have thrown out God’s word. It’ll be every man for himself, every man deciding for himself what is right and what is wrong, and that can’t possibly lead to a good place.”

Religious freedom, he argued, is “incredibly important because it was about us being able to lead our lives according to our beliefs, without interference from the government or anyone else.”

Just to confirm that god only discriminates on terms that suit the religious right, Carson revealed that his deity “does not care what color you are. The fact that we are different colors indicates that God is a very wonderful and gracious individual, because can you imagine how boring we would be if everybody looked exactly like you?”

DLouie Gohmerturing his speech, Carson also said “the transgender stuff” is “absurd” and “the same silliness as safe spaces” on college campuses.

Other conference speakers included Louie Gohmert (right), First Liberty’s Kelly Shackelford, and Abraham Hamilton III from anti-gay litigation group Liberty Counsel.

Bob Dylan nobel prize

American Music icon Bob Dylan was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature on Thursday “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition.”

— The Nobel Prize (@NobelPrize) October 13, 2016

The NYT reports:

He is the first American to win since the novelist Toni Morrison, in 1993. The announcement, in Stockholm, came as something of a surprise. Although Mr. Dylan, 75, has been mentioned often as having an outside shot at the prize, his work does not fit into the traditional literary canons of novels, poetry and short stories that the prize has traditionally recognized.

The prize comes with a cash amount of $900K.

The other American Nobel laureates in literature have been:

Sinclair Lewis, 1930
Eugene Gladstone O’Neill, 1936
Pearl Buck, 1938
TS Eliot, 1948
William Faulkner, 1949
Ernest Miller Hemingway, 1954
John Steinbeck, 1962
Toni Morrison, 1993

Adds NPR:

Yet few would argue Dylan has been anything but influential, both in the U.S. and beyond its borders. The prolific singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist has produced dozens of albums, including The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, Highway 61 Revisited and Blood on the Tracks. His track “Like a Rolling Stone” has taken on mythic standing in the decades since its release; many, including Dylan himself, have pointed to it as emblematic of a sea change in American music.

“Tin Pan Alley is gone,” Dylan proclaimed in 1985, referring the dominant conventions established by music publishers of the early 20th century. “I put an end to it. People can record their own songs now.”
