Hillary Clinton Quote Comparing Gay Rights To Women’s Rights Unearthed By Wikileaks

Dribs and drabs of interesting quotes keep coming out of the hack of the Hillary Clinton campaign’s emails. The leaks, probably orchestrated by Russia, have been mostly unsurprising but they do provide a bit of an insight into her thought process — including her thoughts on “gay rights.”

In an off-the record interview, a New York Times reporter chatted with her about … well, we don’t really know what, because it was off the record. That’s not unusual at all, but a few fragments of their conversation survive because the reporter circled back to the campaign to ask if they could use some of Hillary’s quotes from the talk.

Specifically, they were interested in publishing this: “gay rights has moved much faster than women’s rights or civil rights, which is an interesting phenomenon somebody in the future will unpack,” Hillary said.

That’s an interesting observation, worded awkwardly. It’s obvious what she meant — that attitudes towards LGBTs have moved much faster in the last 40 years than they have on women’s and racial equality. That’s quite true! And it’s an interesting point. But oh, the wording: “gay rights” is a bit of an old fashioned term, since gays don’t see special rights, just the same rights as everyone else.

And oof, it’s a little weird to put “gay rights” against “women’s” and “civil.” Of course, there’s a lot of intersectionality in there, since many queer people are women, and civil rights apply to all of us. These aren’t parallel tracks of liberation, they’re all happening together and overlapping. Given more time, Hillary could surely have formulated a much better statement that wasn’t prone to misunderstanding, but this was just an informal off-the-cuff chat, so of course the wording isn’t quite there.

Nevertheless — it’s nice to know Hillary’s paying attention to our struggle.

Mom Plans To Disown Teen Son For Missing Older Brother’s Coming Out

Mom Plans To Disown Teen Son For Missing Older Brother’s Coming Out

frustrated-boy

Life is a series of choices — what to have for lunch, where to go to college, when to come out to Mom and Dad and, most importantly for this story, when to work on that beach-ready bod.

From the depths of Reddit comes this cautionary tale about the importance of the nuclear family and the bonds that tie it together. So easily they can fray, over seemingly so little.

A distraught 20-year-old sister, we’ll call her Rachel, fills in the details:

I feel like I am slowly losing my mind.

So over the summer my brother Jake (19) and I came home from college and he was was planing to tell the others that he was gay. It was all he talked about on the way home. Our mother picked us up at the airport and took us home. My brother Will (14) said hello to us and made us breakfast. He told us he had to go; he had to be at the lake for his workout.

The board is set and the game begins. Why is Rachel descending slowly into madness? Will Jake finally come out? And what 14-year-old really says he needs to head out to the lake for his workout?

So many questions.

Jake asked Will to wait and Will said, “Dude, I literally can’t. I’m paying money for this session. I don’t get a refund or extra time.” Will is really into fitness/body building. He told us he was sorry and he would be back in 2 hours. So Jake sat myself, my two sisters and our parents down to come out as gay. Will came home and asked Jake what he wanted to tell him and Jake was being immature and said “don’t worry about it.” Will found out from Hannah (13).

Seems like all’s well that ends well to us, but something isn’t right.

Jake last night was talking to me about how rude Will was. I told him Will was trying to apologize.

Now Jake was intoxicated and he told me how our mother planned to disown Will for not being there for the announcement. I spoke to my mother and she all but confirmed this. She does not want a son who puts working out before family. I feel like I am the only sane person left in the world and could use some help.

The comments can be summarized with two simple words: “That’s crazy.”

In the (likely) case that this is a big meaty lie sandwich, this story is just nutty enough to make for one excellent Lifetime movie. Lake Of Fire, Feelings Of Another Brother, Waiting For What’s Real — we’d probably watch it.

And if it’s an honest tale of stubborn miscommunication, we hope Rachel moves far away from her whack job family and gets herself a good therapist.

Philadelphia racism

Protesters overtook a pride flag raising ceremony in Philadelphia in a demonstration against racism within the city’s LGBT community.

The protest comes on the heels of a recent controversy involving local gay bar Icandy. As previously reported, video leaked last month of Icandy owner Darryl DePiano using racial slurs to describe black patrons.

De Piano confirmed that it was him in the video and apologized in a statement released on Facebook.

Protests took place outside Icandy after the video circulated online. Icandy and other bars in Philly’s gayborhood were previously accused of having a racist dress code that specially banned guests from wearing Timberland boots.

The pride flag protest took place on Sunday, October 9, and alleged that Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney and his administration are in denial about racism in the city’s LGBT community.

NBC News reports:

The protesters interrupted the city’s seventh annual flag raising ceremony in the Mayor’s Reception Room. The ceremony is normally held outside City Hall but was moved indoors on Sunday due to rain. The flag raising coincides with the city’s annual OutFest.

Mayor Kenney and other officials left the room once protesters took over the event.

Said Kenney in a statement,

“As I have said previously, there is no denying that racism and discrimination is an issue within the LGBT community. The Gayborhood should be a sanctuary for all in the LGBT community, but sadly not everyone is welcome at some of its institutions, and until real steps are taken to address racist dress code policies or other instances of institutionalized discrimination, I will not go to those institutions.

Discrimination in the Gayborhood and across the city is not something that one person or one office can be expected to solve on its own – it’s on all of us – and I hope the hearing that the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations is holding on racism in the Gayborhood will start to move that ball forward. I intend to be there to do my part in ensuring that it does, and I encourage all others that are invested in change to attend as well.”

Kennet reiterated parts of his statement on Twitter.

Have a long way to go. Gayborhood should be sanctuary for LGBT community, but all are not welcome. And, until they are, I will not go there.

— Jim Kenney (@PhillyMayor) October 9, 2016

He also added that he believes the Philadelphia “LGBT community will overcome this hate, because when this community comes together and works together, they are unstoppable.”

I know LGBT community will overcome this hate, because when this community comes together and works together, they are unstoppable.

NBC News also reports that the city’s Office of LGBT Affairs, headed by former assistant district attorney Nellie Fitzpatrick “issued a statement Sept. 29 after receiving what it called ‘reports of discriminatory practices by businesses in the Gayborhood, and the use of racist and homophobic slurs against members of the LGBT community.’”

A public hearing addressing racism and discrimination in Philadelphia’s Gayborhood is scheduled for October 25. The city has subpoenaed a number of local business owners to appear at the hearing.

String quartet Well-Strung are back with another one of their mashups that mix classical music with contemporary pop.

In their latest video, the group brings together Green Day’s song “21 Guns” with Pachelbel’s Canon, which will sound familiar to you if you’ve ever been to a wedding or watched Father of the Bride.

The video opens with news clips highlighting the epidemic of gun violence sweeping America in recent years, including clips of news coverage following the Orlando massacre.

Well-Strung created the video to bring attention to the need for common sense gun safety report. The group wrote on Facebook,

“We made this video for our new single that joins Green Day‘s hit song 21 Guns and Pachelbel’s Canon hoping to inspire change and promote safer gun legislation. …If you would like to make a difference, go to Everytown for Gun Safety and take the Gun Sense Voter Pledge to help end gun violence!”

While the video starts off with an ominous tone, there’s a gleeful twist that helps explain the choice of Pachelbel’s Canon for this mash-up.

Previously, Well-Strung has fused Bach with Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space”, recreated Fountains of Wayne’s  track “Stacy’s Mom” as “Chelsea’s Mom” to advocate for Hillary Clinton, covered Lorde’s “Royals” backed by the group’s rendition of Karl Jenkins’ “Palladio” from the album Diamond Music (you’ve heard it before in DeBeers diamond commercials), and blended “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” with Bach.
