HRC Endorses Patty Judge of Iowa for United States Senate

Today, HRC announced its endorsement of Patty Judge for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Chuck Grassley.

“Iowa has long been a leader when it comes to LGBTQ equality, and Patty Judge will finally bring those Iowa values to the U.S. Senate so that LGBTQ people all across our country can live free from fear of discrimination,” said HRC Senior Vice President of Policy and Political Affairs JoDee Winterhof. “While Patty Judge will fight for Iowa values of fairness and equality, Chuck Grassley has abused his leadership position in the Senate to block any progress on equality. Grassley has demonstrated again and again that he would leave LGBTQ people around the country at risk for being fired or denied a job because of who they are or whom they love.”

The nonpartisan Public Religion Research Institute found strong support for LGBTQ equality in Iowa, which was the fourth U.S. state to gain marriage equality. Iowans reported supporting marriage equality by a 56-35 percent margin, while Iowans support LGBTQ nondiscrimination protections by an even larger 71 to 24 percent margin.

As the Senate Judiciary Committee Chair, Grassley has refused to hold a hearing on President Obama’s nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court since he was nominated more than 200 days ago — breaking the previous record of 125 days. Meanwhile, Donald Trump has committed to appointing Supreme Court justices who would reverse nationwide marriage equality.

Chuck Grassley remains out of step with the vast majority of fair-minded Iowans who support LGBTQ equality. Senator Grassley has a starkly anti-LGBTQ record, which includes refusing to support the Equality Act, comprehensive legislation to protect LGBT people from discrimination. In addition, he voted against the bipartisan Employment Non-Discrimination Act, the Student Non-Discrimination Act, and the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” He also led the effort to try to strip essential non-discrimination protections from the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act.

Paid for by the Human Rights Campaign PAC and authorized by Patty Judge for Iowa.

Islamic Preacher Lecturing In London Seen Outlining Ways To Kill Gay People

Islamic Preacher Lecturing In London Seen Outlining Ways To Kill Gay People

An Islamic preacher, Shaykh Hamza Sodagar, seen in a video outlining the various ways Islamic law calls for the killing of gay people, is lecturing over a number of days, continuing through October 12th at the Islamic Republic of Iran School in London.

Sodagar was born in Washington, D.C. and has spent the past 14 years studying Islamic law and principles, according to Express.

His talks started October 4 and run through October 12, and are supported by the Ahlulbayt Islamic Mission. The video clip, which has caused controversy and concern, comes from a 2010 speech on “Punishment According to Islam,” delivered at Saba Islamic Center of San Jose.

If there’s homosexual men, the punishment is one of five things. One, the easiest one maybe: chop their head off. That’s the easiest. Second, burn them to death. Third, throw them off a cliff. Fourth, tear down a wall on them so they die under that. Fifth, a combination of the above.

We have a hadith on that. Now whether somebody’s going to accept that, that’s up to the jurists to read and understand. There’s definitely, some of those apply. Now, maybe the combination. But that’s something that’s there.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Ahlulbayt Islamic Mission claimed the video was taken out of context and is being misrepresented by “right-wing media.”

In remarks made in 2010, as part of a series of lectures delivered on mercy, love and hatred in Islam through a commentary of a supplication from the Islamic tradition, Shaykh Hamza explained the position of Islam on homosexuality, and that it is not compatible with Islam. This is a clear and undeniable position that is upheld by Islam as found in Islamic scripture and tradition. In this regard, it must be understood, as was mentioned in the very same lecture series, that Islamic penal code cannot be administered outside the framework of law-enforcement and legal process within a legitimate government.

De-contextualised excerpts of this series, were used by right-wing media to suggest that Shaykh Hamza was calling for ‘the beheading and burning of homosexuals’. This is untrue and a mischievous and malicious accusation to make.

To suggest that Shaykh Hamza is calling for the beheading and burning of homosexuals is laughable and absurd.

According to our understanding, it is precisely this irresponsible behavior that incites hatred and fuels racism and discrimination; and to this we shall not remain silent. We believe such entities intentionally seek to fuel divisions, stifle alternate voices and defame personalities that seek to make a positive contribution to society.

The full context of his comments can be seen below. His comments about homosexuality start around the 13 minute mark. After his statements found in the above clip, Sodagar reads a hadith questioning if love and hatred come from faith or are irrelevant to the issue.

“Is faith anything other than hate and love? Since all of faith, all of religion is based on love and hatred,” Sodagar says. “The concept of love and hatred are 100 percent related to the religion…If you don’t love the right thing you’re going to love the wrong thing. If you don’t hate the right thing you’re going to hate the wrong thing.”

His comments previous to those on homosexuality express his disdain for those who preach peace and love all the time, and for those who say they should not speak of hatred and punishment in a serious way.

Taken in context, the video calls into question the Ahlulbayt Islamic Mission’s statement. While Sodagar does say that Islamic penal code cannot be freely carried out, it does not appear as if he believes it would always be wrong for such punishments to be allowed. In fact, the opposite seems true.

He gives the following example, among others, as to why mercy is not always required:

One of the Jewish tribes that betrayed the holy prophet on multiple occasions – and they almost had the Muslims all killed – the way they were dealt with, according to this historical account, is all their men were killed. And according to the account, the holy prophet watched all this happen…This is the prophet of mercy.

The one that we just described last night, how merciful he was to the orphans, to the women, you don’t want to see his face in battle. You don’t want to come across this man in battle.

When it comes to Allah, when the time is right, when it is necessary: very violent.

He then predicts what is coming, and claims he is not spreading hatred or violence, saying:

I’m saying all of this, some of you are probably thinking, this is probably going to go online. People are probably thinking how they will take it out of context, ‘Oh, this Sheikh, you know, he’s spreading hatred and violence and all of that. No, we’re not trying to do that.

Look at the people that are telling you not to be violent. Who is spreading this information about, don’t be violent? Who is echoing it? It’s the same people that are the most ruthless, violent on earth. They don’t have mercy on children that haven’t committed a sin. They’re telling you violence is bad.

“We deeply regret that an indiscretion for which we are not responsible has led to these images being published without our knowledge or, far less, our consent.”

That’s a snippet from the statement posted on the social media accounts of Sergi Enrich and Antonio Luna, both from the Spanish soccer club Eibar.

Here’s hoping neither Enrich or Luna ultimately give a flying fuck that the 17-second clip was leaked, and neither do any of their teammates.

Here’s their joint statement in full:

We likewise regret the potential damage [not only] to our image but in particular to that of our club, whose colours we represent, and that it could have offended our supporters and the city of Eibar in general.”

“We are aware that professional footballers should set an example in every walk of life, especially to children; this being the reason we apologise if this incident has caused harm to anyone.”

“Equally, we want to apologise for the damage the circulation of this video could cause to the third person involved in the video.”

“We wish to stress that, as SD Eibar players, an exemplary club that represents a set of fans and a city equally exemplary, we stand by the values that have been shown to us since we arrived in Eibar. We hope this incident does not in any way harm the image of the club, nor that of our team-mates.”

Jeffrey Hurant, the founder and CEO of Rentboy.com, which was shut down in August 2015 after being raided by federal agents, has pleaded guilty to prostitution charges, the NY Daily News reports:

Jeffrey Hurant faces up to five years in prison and a $10 million fine for conspiring to launder the proceeds of illicit advertising on the website through his corporation Easy Rent Systems Inc. from 1996 to 2015.

“The corporation operated primarily for a criminal purpose,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Tyler Smith said.

Hurant, 51, admitted in Brooklyn Federal Court that he knew the ads on the website were for male prostitution.

According to the paper, “Hurant agreed not to appeal the sentence if Federal Judge Margo Brodie gives him two years or less in prison and a fine of $10 million or less.”

Federal authorities dropped charges against six other employees in February.

Secrets Are Revealed When ‘Finding Prince Charming’ Goes Ball To the Wall [RECAP]

Secrets Are Revealed When ‘Finding Prince Charming’ Goes Ball To the Wall [RECAP]

Robby on Finding Prince Charming

You guys, I think we need to have a discussion about what exactly constitutes a “ball.” Because if this week’s episode of No Fats, No Femmes, No Asians Finding Prince Charming is any indication, I believe I have a very different definition than other folks out there.

Look, I love dancing uncomfortably in unfurnished dining rooms with six of my best Judys as much as the next guy, but I’d hardly consider that a ball. I barely consider that a party. I’ve been to Grease Live! viewing parties that were more lively.

In addition to the sad disco we all had to sit through, we’ve got a lot to unpack. It’s the week where everyone has to dig deep for feelings, and the results are mixed, at best!

Let’s mine for depth in the shallows of humanity for our recap, below.

Robby on Finding Prince Charming

Coming off of last week’s elimination, the big story is how Robby needs to show his serious side, which baffles him as much as it does the rest of us. You’re perfect, Robby, don’t change a thing.

Eric notes early in the episode that with so many departed suitors, there’s a lot less personality in the house, and boy is that an understatement!

Lance Bass comes in to alert the boys that they’ll be “coming out again” by revealing their true selves at a masquerade ball later that evening. Get ready for some real, earnest, overwrought nonsense, you guys, but with glitter!

(As an aside, in my nightmares, Lance Bass bursts into my home each morning to give me some embarrassing corporate retreat icebreaker to do with a bunch of former Hollister models. This whole series is very triggering for me.)

Before they reveal their true selves (oh, brother) to Robert later that evening, they’re going to craft a custom mask that symbolizes who they really are or what they’re hiding or, I don’t know, honestly, even I’m losing this mask metaphor right now. Is the mask who they really are, or is the mask hiding who they are? What are you even talking about, Lance Bass? Do you know how masks work? Are you OK?

The boys get cracking, dusting their masks with glitter and feathers and good vibes, or whatever, and Eric is seriously shook by the experience. He brings Justin upstairs and reveals that his mask symbolizes that he is HIV-positive. He’s going to reveal his status to Robert and all the other guys at the ball later.

All the guys put on black tuxedos … and then head downstairs to the empty dining room … to dance uncomfortably with one another. It looks like a funeral in New Orleans. It looks like Logo presents a made-for-TV Eyes Wide Shut. It looks like the least fun party of all time.

Even Robby is in a mood. In his pursuit of showcasing his more serious side, he just comes off grumpy. Robert notices him slouching, but just can’t get over the idea that having a sense of humor isn’t necessarily a CONSPIRACY. Contrary to Robert’s suspicions, it is possible for functioning adults to actually have a personality.

Even in his slump Robby still manages to nail the best line of the night when Robert (totally, unprompted, unscripted and not at all like a robot) says “I want to know what your masks mean.” Robby just sort of rolls his eyes and, without missing a beat, says “Cue Lance Bass.” Perfection.

Like saying Beetlejuice three times (or the sound of a camera shutter within three miles of Frankie Grande), Lance Bass is summoned. The guys line up to one-by-one explain their masks to Robert. And it is rough. Most guys give some variation on the same story: I’m glittery and sparkly and fun and a walking Instagram thirst-trap on the outside, but inside, I have, like, feelings and struggles that are, like, really hard, you know? It’s painful to watch, actually.

Justin in particular feels pretty self-indulgent. He tries to one-up the guys with a mask behind a mask. It’s sort of like Roxxxy Andrews’ wig-under-a-wig, except about a million times less gratifying. Justin’s outermost mask is white and rainbow. It symbolizes how he is confident and full of pride on the outside, but inside he’s (*dramatic mask reveal*) got his challenges.

His inner mask is a black sparkly mask with, I kid you not, golden teardrops to show that sometimes he just cares TOO MUCH for other people, and it makes him vulnerable. Basically, he wants to Robert to know that he is such a good person, and it is such a burden to care so much! (I also hate the way he awkwardly forces the phrase “all that glitters isn’t gold” when he takes off the first mask. Come on, lady.)

Anyway, the big moment is built up for Eric to make his reveal to Robert, which he does last. It’s a big moment, and the show knows it, even taking a commercial break right before Eric steps up. His confession is met with overwhelming support from Robert and the rest of the guys. Robert even chooses him for the one-on-one date.

They hop in a limo and are whisked away to a romantic dinner. On the way, Robert shares the story of his uncle, whom he cared for while he died of AIDS in the ‘90s. At dinner, Eric is the most open he’s been, now that the wall has been taken down between them. As they head home, they share a steamy make-out session in the back of the limo, and I’m 90 percent sure I caught Eric’s hand on Robert’s junk. Go on, gurl.

As I’m often critical of this show, I will say that any opportunity to lessen the stigma around HIV is a good thing. The fact that he is still embraced by Robert and boys is great. Sure, maybe the masquerade/reveal set up and dramatic editing felt a touch exploitative, but that’s how things work on reality TV.

At the same time, I would hope in 2016 on a gay show on a gay network, we’re not just patting ourselves on the back, because Eric wasn’t chased out of the house with pitchforks and torches. There’s a much more nuanced exploration of HIV and dating in the gay community to be had, but that’s not for this show, and I’m OK with that.

The next day Robert comes by for a pool party (ugh, another pool party?). Eric is perplexed that his new husband Robert is still dating five other people, so he’s sad every time Robert steps away with another guy. Meanwhile, Chad wants to show Robert the mask he made for him, which was inspired by a canary Phoenix because it’s “ignited by fire” (what?) and Robert ignites a fire in him (oof). Am I the only one that gets a creepy vibe from Chad? Like wear-your-skin creepy? He reminds me of a cro-magnon Talented Mr. Ripley. (Though I live for his ugly cry every. single. time.)

Chad on Finding Prince Charming

Brandon snatches Robert away to suggest that he was “unavailable” the night before. Maybe he means that they all revealed secrets to him, but he kept his secrets to himself. Whatever the case, they agree that will get each other’s attention more (or something) and then start doing this weird Cirque du Soleil kissing that involves a lot of backbends and jockeying for position. It’s uncomfortable to watch, and probably uncomfortable for them, too, unless they had a chance to stretch properly beforehand.

Justin makes the puzzling decision to tell Robert that maybe he doesn’t want to get between Robert and his new best friend Eric. Huh? Is he trying to take himself out of the competition? How could he possibly jeopardize the budding romance he’s got with a guy he just met just to save the budding friendship he has with a different near-stranger? Oh, Justin, you are so brave putting everyone else’s feelings first. Classic Justin.

The black tie affair comes along, and it’s down to Justin and Robby (even though Dillon wears a hideous denim jacket that should have disqualified him immediately, sorry). To the surprise of absolutely no one, Robert sends Robby packing, leaving a massive void in this cast of characters. Personally, I think Robby’s better off.

What did you think of this episode?

HRC Board Member Joins U.S. Senator and Equality Leaders In Asheville For An LGBTQ Discussion

HRC Board Member Joins U.S. Senator and Equality Leaders In Asheville For An LGBTQ Discussion

Pictured above: From the left: HRC Board Member Tina Madison White, Jasmine Beach Ferrara (Center), U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (2nd from Right), and ENC Executive Director and State Representative Chris Sgro (Right).

Earlier this week, HRC Board Member Tina Madison White joined U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and local community leaders in Asheville to discuss the ongoing fight for LGBTQ equality in North Carolina, the impact of HB2, and the importance of voting for pro-equality candidates down the ballot on Nov. 8.

Dozens of attendees were present to join the conversation on the current state of North Carolina’s LGBTQ community and what’s at stake in the upcoming November elections. White, an author and transgender advocate, was also joined by Equality NC Executive Director and state Rep. Chris Sgro, Buncombe County Commissioner-elect Jasmine Beach-Ferrara and Asheville Mayor Esther Elizabeth Manheimer.

Leaders discussed the negative impact HB2 has had on LGBTQ North Carolinians and the state’s economy and how voters could change this by voting for pro-equality candidates in November.

“Governor Pat McCrory is right about one thing: women do need protection,” White said. “But HB2 makes them less safe…The most pressing issue for LGBTQ people in Western North Carolina are jobs and homelessness. HB2 continues to cause millions in economic losses for North Carolina, loss of jobs and opportunities for North Carolinians.”

Nearly 70 percent of North Carolina voters support the repeal of HB2. Moreover, North Carolina is home to an LGBTQ voting population of more than 331,000; a powerful voting block that can substantially impact North Carolina elections. With Hillary Clinton leading Donald Trump 46 to 44% and Roy Cooper leading Pat McCrory 48 to 44% in the North Carolina governor’s race, the mobilization of pro-equality voters will be critical to repealing HB2 and electing pro-equality leaders down the ballot.

Calling for the full repeal of HB2, better leadership in Raleigh, and the election of presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, Sen. Klobuchar and other equality leaders encouraged voters to get engaged with local efforts to elect pro-equality candidates and take advantage of early voting, which begins Oct. 20.

HRC staff and volunteers have been on the ground mobilizing pro-equality voters to the polls to elect leadership that will stand up for all North Carolinians. If you live in Charlotte or the Triangle area of North Carolina, join HRC’s efforts to repeal HB2 and #turnOut the vote in November. Click here to sign-up to volunteer at our Charlotte or Raleigh offices.

This November, HRC is working to #turnOUT the vote across the country, including the growing and highly engaged LGBTQ community. Today, there are an estimated 331,412 LGBTQ adults living in North Carolina — a substantial population given that the state was won in the last three presidential elections by an average of 180,500 votes. The LGBTQ voting bloc in North Carolina will play a pivotal role in the presidential, gubernatorial and other down-ballot races. If you have questions about HRC’s work in North Carolina to #turnOUT voters or would like to join us, please contact HRC Associate Regional Field Director at [email protected].
