DVD: “Money Monster,” “From Afar,” “Beneath The Skin,” & More!

Conflict is drama, and boy do we have some this week in home entertainment… and eye candy to boot!

George Clooney is taken hostage while Julia Roberts tries to help him deal in Money Monster, an older man with a penchant for hustlers becomes transfixed on rough trade in From Afar (above), and adult star Hunter Page aka Justin Liles makes a dramatic turn as a young gay tattoo artist on the run from a violent family in Beneath The Skin.

Now for some details and trailers!

Money Monster

($34.99 Blu-ray, $30.99 DVD; Sony)

George Clooney plays Lee Gates, over the top host of an obnoxious cable TV show about stocks and Wall Street, a la CNBC’s Mad Money. However, one day’s episode turns into a hostage situation when a disgruntled viewer, Kyle, shows up with an explosive jacket, gun, and vengeance quest after he lost everything on one of Lee’s tips. With his producer – and ex – Patty (Julia Roberts) in the control room,  Lee does whatever he can to appease Kyle’s demands, and may well unearth some shady business in the process. A satirical yet timely piece from director Jodie Foster. Extras include deleted scenes, featurettes, and Dan The Automator music video.

Beneath the Skin

($24.99 DVD; TLA)

Two young gays, Joshua and Jay, meet in Canada, while each struggles with family dramas: for the former, his mother’s recent death. For the latter, an abusive set of parents in Alabama. Of course, from there, they grow even closer to discover what else they may have in common. Written, directed by and starring Aaron Ellis, this debut also entails the first dramatic turn of porn star Hunter Page, aka Nashville’s Justin Iles.

From Afar

($27.99 DVD; Strand)

50-something Armando trolls Caracas for hot young men and pays them to come home and let him watch them. He’s a real voyeur, but gets more than just visual thrills when he brings home a rough, crime-prone teenager named Elder, who rolls him. Despite this beating, he only becomes more drawn to the bad news youth, and after some continues pursuit, becomes an object of fascination or more for the young Elder, too. Directed by Lorenzo Vigas, this Death In Venice-inspired drama snagged the Venice Film Festival’s coveted Golden Lion. Extras include Vigas’ 2004 short film, Elephants Never Die.

STAN WAWRINKA. Tennis player wins third Grand Slam, stunning Novak Djokovic. “Patrick McEnroe, commentating in the ESPN box, shared the cynical displeasure of most onlookers when the defending champion, who appeared to be cramping, was granted a dubious medical timeout to have his toes tended to midway through the fourth set, shortly after being broken. It appeared to be a risible manipulation of the regulations, which say timeouts can only be taken for an “acute medical condition that requires immediate attention”. Wawrinka did not seem impressed, seeking assurance from the tournament referee, Brian Earley, that all was above board – and shooting his opponent a knowing glance.”

John Oliver Is Jealous Birds Get To Fly South for the Winter – WATCH

john oliver birds

While John Oliver’s show Last Week Tonight is still on hiatus, he shared a web exclusive on Sunday to talk about a very serious subject: birds.

Now that fall is officially on its way, Oliver has a message for all the birds flying south for the winter: “F*ck you, birds. I hope you never come back.”

Oliver ripped into what he called “disgusting sky mice” who are just “a sh*tty sequel to the dinosaurs.” He called ostriches “first draft flamingoes”, hummingbirds, “obese bees in need of a nose job,” and penguins–actually he has no problem with penguins, because who can be angry at a penguin?

Said Oliver to the birds, “enjoy your tropical getaways while the rest of us face the frigid torment of winter and I hope each and every one of you flies into a wind turbine on your way north next spring.”

Watch, below.

Tim Kaine: I Think the Catholic Church is Going to Change Its Position on Gay Marriage – WATCH

Tim Kaine: I Think the Catholic Church is Going to Change Its Position on Gay Marriage – WATCH

Tim Kaine Catholic Church

Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine delivered the keynote address at the Human Rights Campaign national dinner in Washington DC over the weekend, and much of his speech focused on his evolution on marriage equality with regard to his Catholic faith.

He said he expects the Catholic Church’s position on the issue to evolve as well.

The Washington Blade reports:

Upon his designation as the Democratic vice presidential nominee, Kaine’s evolution on LGBT rights emerged in media reports. When running to become Virginia governor in 2006, Kaine said he didn’t support adoption by gay couples, but reversed his position by 2011. Like Clinton, Kaine wasn’t undeniably in support of marriage equality until 2013.

Despite his evolution, Kaine recalled during his speech, his first act after becoming governor of Virginia in 2007 was signing an executive order prohibiting discrimination against gay people employed by the state government. After signing a friend-of-the-court brief before the U.S. Supreme Court in favor of marriage equality, Kaine recalled “how happy” he was when the ruling came down in favor of nationwide marriage equality.

Kaine, who said he now has “full, complete, unconditional support” for marriage equality, said he knows his views are not in line with the Catholic Church’s views on marriage, but said the time will come when the institution will change its view.

“I think that’s going to change, too,” Kaine said. “And I think that’s going to change because my church also teaches me about a creator in the first chapter of Genesis, who surveyed the entire world, including mankind, and said, ‘It is very good. It is very good.’”

Recalling the words of Pope Francis, who said “Who am I judge?” in response to a question about a gay priest, Kaine said he wants to add, “Who am I to challenge God for the beautiful diversity of the human family? I think we’re supposed to celebrate it.”

You’re About To Become Very Addicted To Sex Robots, Scientist Warns

You’re About To Become Very Addicted To Sex Robots, Scientist Warns

Sinthetics-Header

In the future, we’ll all be coming home to exasperatingly sexy robots who will compliantly bend to our every passing fancy. And since that sounds so great, an uptight sex therapist has come forward to a.) rain on all this speculative sexiness, and b.) warn us, in no uncertain terms, that we all run the risk of becoming very addicted to these hot-to-trot droids.

Related: WATCH: Helpful Robot Warns Masturbators About Approaching Intruders

As The Daily Star reports, a “top robotics expert” is warning that a new line of cyborgs developed to be superlative lovers will get us “hooked.”

“Robotic sex may become addictive,” said American Research Fellow and certifiable buzzkill Joel Snell from Kirkwood College.

Sexbots would always be available and could never say no, so addictions would be easy to feed.

People may become obsessed by their ever faithful, ever pleasing sex robot lovers.

“People will rearrange their lives to accommodate their addictions.”

These powerful robots are going to be far better at sex than you are, Dave. They won’t give sass (unless you hit the “sass” button) and won’t talk back unless you’ve programmed them to talk back . They’re going to be incredibly hot and you won’t be able to resist and you will get addicted. And that’s that.

“Robotic sex may become better than human sex,” Snell drones on. “Like many other technologies that have replaced human endeavors, robots could surpass human technique. Because they would be programmable, sexbots would meet each individual user’s needs.”

Related: WATCH: Chiseled Sex Robots From Hell Meet Barbra Streisand In Creepy/Hot Ad

But a “top sex therapist” named Gurpreet Singh wants Snell to stop bumming everyone out, and says these sex robots could be a good thing.

A very good thing, indeed.

“Who are we to judge people who want to have sex with robots?”

Let people enjoy sex robots – they will work in the same way couples introduce a toy into a sexual relationship.

“And if both parties agree, I see nothing wrong.”

Now all these people need to immediately stop talking unless they’re planning to tell us where we can get our hands on these goddamn addictive sexy robots.

Donald Trump Says He Had Physical and Will Release Results, Says He Hopes Hillary Clinton Gets Well: WATCH

Donald Trump Says He Had Physical and Will Release Results, Says He Hopes Hillary Clinton Gets Well: WATCH

Donald Trump reacted to Hillary Clinton’s early exit from yesterday’s 9/11 Memorial Ceremony in lower Manhattan, telling the hosts of Fox & Friends, “Like you, I see what I see. The coughing fit was a week ago, so I assume that was pneumonia also. I think it would have been, so something’s going on. I just hope she gets well and gets back on the trail and we’ll be seeing her at the debate.”

Trump also said that he had a physical last week and would release the results:

.@realDonaldTrump: I took a physical in the last week and I will release the results this week pic.twitter.com/ELJTdL4oEk

— FOX & Friends (@foxandfriends) September 12, 2016

Clinton has canceled plans to travel to the west coast on Monday in order to recover.

Donald Trump also appeared on CNBC’s Squawk Box, where the hosts asked about Clinton’s health but in a 30-minute interview, failed to ask even one question about the Trump Foundation and the Pam Bondi charity investigation.

Politico writes:

Clinton’s campaign points to several pieces of evidence. She has put forth a 9,000-word plan for defeating ISIS, for example, while Trump says only that he has a plan but it must keep secret. Brooklyn argues that the media has spent more than a year producing critical coverage of Clinton’s use of a private email server and Clinton Foundation donations despite several official investigations turning up no hard evidence of corruption; meanwhile, news organizations are under-covering Trump’s $25,000 donation to Florida’s attorney general and the AG’s subsequent closing of an investigation into fraud claims against Trump University, for which he was fined by the IRS.

Over the weekend, Clinton found herself under fire for describing half of Trump’s supporters as a “basket of deplorables” even as charges of racism and misogyny among some Trump supporters have been substantiated by video and print coverage of his rallies. And on Sunday, Clinton appearing weak in the heat while leaving the 9/11 Memorial drew alarmed responses about her health, building on one of Trump’s favorite attacks on her fitness for office, while his own health and comparable age have received far less scrutiny even though he has produced only a single doctor’s letter attesting to his vigor that was dashed off by a gastroenterologist in five minutes, (not to mention his diet of meatloaf and McDonald’s).

Such a double-standard wouldn’t exist with any candidate but Trump, whose persistent mendacity and eagerness to bulldoze political norms makes him both challenging for media to hold to account and endearing to supporters who are excited to see someone taking an axe to a system they no longer trust.
