Reviews Of Last Night’s ‘Finding Prince Charming’ Premiere Are In And They Are Predictably Brutal

The gay reality dating show Finding Prince Charming premiered on LogoTV last night and the reviews are about what we expected. Most people hated it. Some people really hated it. And other people really, really hated it.

Kevin Fallon at The Daily Beast called the show a “disaster” and a “snooze,” and wonders “how do you put a dozen gay men in a house together and make it boring?” (He also had some choice words for “Prince Charming” himself, 33-year-old Robert Sepúlveda Jr., who he called the show’s “fatal flaw” due to his “sheer lack of charisma.”)

Andy Swift at TVLand had a similar response, labeling last night’s episode “pretty uneventful” and criticizing almost all of the guys on the show for being devoid of any redeeming qualities: “Of the 15 men featured in Thursday’s premiere, including Robert and host Lance Bass, approximately four of them have personalities. They all do, however, have a portfolio of immaculately filtered gym/beach selfies.”

Then there was Kevin O’Keeffe at Mic, who may have had the harshest review yet. He called the show “dull, poorly produced and not deserving of anyone’s time or energy” adding it’s “not worth even a hate-watch.” He called Sepúlveda “a dud of a leading man.” And he questioned if the show is really as “historic” or ground-breaking as producers would have you believe, pointing to the incident where one of the bachelors criticizes another for being too feminine and flamboyant. “This is where we are in 2016? A fight about not being ‘masc’ enough?” O’Keeffe asks.

There were also the folks on Twitter, who were slightly more forgiving, but not much. The show was actually briefly trending last night… in large part thanks to Britney Spears, who may or may not have been paid to tweet about it to her nearly 50 million followers. But that didn’t stop the onslaught of catty tweets and memes.

Check out what some folks had to say…

Minneapolis Restaurant’s Perfect Response To Yelp Review Calling Clientele “Too Gay”

Minneapolis Restaurant’s Perfect Response To Yelp Review Calling Clientele “Too Gay”

screen-shot-2016-09-08-at-5-16-56-pm-2

A popular brunch destination in Minneapolis was quick to respond to an obnoxious review bemoaning the fact that the eatery has “too many gay people” hanging out inside, according to a report by Fox 9.

Related: EXCLUSIVE: Transgender Woman Alleges Harassment At Popular Times Square Restaurant, Inaction By Management

Despite the fact that Minneapolis always ranks as one of the top gay-friendly cities in America, one customer was apparently tired of all the homosexuals eating their brunches and slurping mimosas at Hell’s Kitchen restaurant, and decided they’d write up a fiery Yelp review that said as much.

The staff wasted no time confronting the situation head on.

Related: Restaurant Owner Shuts Down Homophobe On Facebook, Gets Huge Boost In Business

“While you’re certainly free to post any comment you want about us,” they write, “we’re equally free to say you cannot enter our home again.”

Here’s the letter in full:

An open letter to ______, who just reviewed us on Yelp with one phrase: “Too many gay people.”

We’re writing in response to a review you posted on Yelp a few minutes ago. It simply said “too many gay people.”

We ask that you not return to Hell’s Kitchen again. All of us who work here, whether straight or gay, view Hell’s Kitchen as our home; we open our doors each morning and do our best to make every person kind enough to dine with us feel as if it is their home, too. We do our best to make every guest feel welcome, we do our best to create an environment that gives them a chance to enjoy the company of their friends, we do our best to create an environment that is blind to any form of prejudice and we do our best to create an environment that is safe. These aren’t “business goals”….they’re just naturally in the DNA of every one of the 166 members of our Hell’s Kitchen family.

While you’re certainly free to post any comment you want about us, we’re equally free to say you cannot enter our home again.

Sincerely,
Cyn, Pat and the staff at Hell’s Kitchen

And the story has a happy ending, too. According to an “editor’s note” amended to the original story, a family member says the Yelp user has “retracted his comment and has learned the error of his ways.”

We don’t doubt the veracity of this particular story, but wouldn’t making up a tale like this be an easy and efficient way to drum up free publicity?

Church of England Leaders Call on Bishops to Welcome LGBT Members – VIDEO

Church of England Leaders Call on Bishops to Welcome LGBT Members – VIDEO

nicholas-chamberlain-church-of-england

Prior to a meeting of the College of Bishops next Monday, 131 members of the Church of England’s ruling body – close to one third – have signed a letter urging the bishops to unequivocally welcome lesbian and gay Christians into the church.

At Monday’s meeting, Bishops will discuss what the church should do following two years of internal debate about sexuality. Last week, Nicholas Chamberlain (above) became the first bishop to openly declare he is gay and in a relationship.

Bishop Nicholas Chamberlain is incredibly brave! Good on him for going public! Those decrying him should be ashamed. #LGBT #CofE

— Mathew Hulbert (@HulbertMathew) September 3, 2016

The letter urges bishops to “help lead us forward” and to be “unequivocal in its acknowledgement that all, including those who identify as LGBTI, are essential to the health and future of our church and mission to the wider world”.

RELATED: Church Of England Faces Legal Challenge After Blocking Job Offer To Married Gay Priest

Lay synod member Jayne Ozanne, who helped organize the letter, told The Guardian the response had been overwhelming:

“It definitely seems that the tide is now finally turning. From conversations I have had it would appear that many synod members were deeply challenged and moved by the [internal] discussions in July, and it seems that there is a growing consensus for the church to take active steps towards ensuring it is welcoming and inclusive of all.”

Paul Bayes, the bishop of Liverpool, said “It was especially good to recognize the signatures of synod colleagues from many of the different traditions that make up our richly diverse church.”

Congratulations to Archbishop Justin Welby on appointment of Bishop Nicholas Chamberlain. Tho’ an atheist I want a Church led with courage.

— Michael Cashman (@mcashmanCBE) September 3, 2016

However, last month 72 conservatives warned Bishops against “any proposals that could leave the church ‘adrift from her apostolic inheritance’ and lead to an ‘unwanted fracture’ within the C of E and global Anglican church.”

A church spokesperson said that “deep convictions have been shared and profound differences better understood. That process will inform discussions at the meeting of the college of bishops and further meetings in the months ahead”.

No final decisions are expected to be made at next week’s meeting.

The conservative Anglican group Gafcon has said that appointing Chamberlain as Bishop of Grantham has placed “difficult stresses on a church which is hanging together by the skin of its teeth.”

Watch an interview with Chamberlain below.

Will 3rd Time Be the Charm for Jacksonville’s LGBT-Inclusive Human Rights Ordinance?

Will 3rd Time Be the Charm for Jacksonville’s LGBT-Inclusive Human Rights Ordinance?

screen-shot-2016-09-08-at-7-10-55-pm

Six months after withdrawing it, a Jacksonville city councilman is preparing to reintroduce a proposed Human Rights Ordinance that would prohibit anti-LGBT discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations.

It would mark the third time in less than five years that the City Council in Jacksonville, the nation’s second-largest city without LGBT nondiscrimination protections, has considered them.

screen-shot-2016-09-08-at-7-06-33-pmCouncilman Tommy Hazouri (right) withdrew the proposed HRO in March amid fierce opposition from social conservatives and a lack of support among council members. But Hazouri plans to reintroduce the bill this fall, The Jax Daily Record reports:

As for the typically discussed “bathroom” issue for the transgender community, Hazouri calls it a red herring. Other communities and the Duval County School Board in 2008 passed similar protections without issues.

He points to other cities like Tampa, Miami and West Palm Beach as being examples leading on the issue.

“If Jackson, Miss., can pass a bill, Jacksonville can pass a bill,” he said of the Mississippi city council passing protection laws days after the Pulse nightclub shooting in June.

He said Jacksonville doesn’t need to be “short-changed” like North Carolina, which has lost business expansion and sports opportunities because of the state’s inability to offer anti-discrimination protections to all people.

Although Hazouri reportedly is committed to keeping transgender protections in the ordinance, he told FloridaPolitics.com he’s open to considering other changes. The proposed ordinance already exempts churches, religious schools and businesses with fewer than 15 employees.

The Jacksonville Coalition for Equality recently reported that more than 150 faith leaders have come out in support of LGBT protections, joining more than 600 businesses.

One of the most prominent opponents of the ordinance, Pastor Ken Adkins, was recently arrested on charges of child molestation involving a young male at his church.

IN TODAY’S EDITION: Trump-Pence flaunt anti-LGBTQ ‘values’ at hate-filled weekend summit in DC… HRC’s 20th Annual National Dinner features Tim Kaine and John Lewis… Hillary Clinton blasts discriminatory HB2… Airbnb takes steps to combat discrimination… Katy Perry surprises Pulse survivor on “Ellen”… RIP The Lady Chablis…

THIS WEEKEND IN DC — TRUMP-PENCE FLAUNT ANTI-LGBTQ ‘VALUES’ WHILE KAINE SPEAKS OUT FOR EQUALITY : The Trump-Pence campaign will be courting anti-LGBTQ activists today and tomorrow at the so-called “Values Voter Summit” in Washington, D.C. In a marked contrast, the same weekend that Trump and Pence will address the gathering of the nation’s top anti-LGBTQ extremists, Democratic Vice Presidential Candidate Tim Kaine is set to speak out for equality at the 20th annual HRC National Dinner across town on Saturday evening. Trump is slated to speak at 3 p.m. today and Pence at 11:35 a.m. Saturday. HRC will host a Tweet Up to give facts about the event on Twitter, using the hashtags #NotOurValues and #VVS2016. HRC has also released a snapchat filter that will be geo-targeted to the area near the Omni Shoreham, the“Values Voters Summit” host hotel. More here.

MEANWHILE … HRC’s 20th ANNUAL NATIONAL DINNER TO FEATURE EQUALITY ADVOCATES TIM KAINE & JOHN LEWIS: Tomorrow, more than 3,600 people will gather in Washington, D.C.. for the 20th annual HRC National Dinner, bringing together LGBTQ advocates, leaders, allies, and champions from across the nation. Democratic Vice Presidential nominee Tim Kaine will deliver the keynote address, and civil rights hero Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) will also speak. “With all the progress we have made under President Obama, Tim Kaine and John Lewis will remind all of us just how important it is that we fight to elect a President who will champion LGBTQ equality every single day she sits in the Oval Office,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “We are honored to welcome them both to our 20th annual National Dinner.” Tony Award-winning artist Billy Porter (@TheeBillyPorter) and Grammy Award-winning artist Estelle (@EstelleDarlings) will perform; special guests include Secretary of the Army Eric Fanning (@SECARMY), the first openly gay leader of a U.S. military service.

HILLARY CLINTON BLASTS DISCRIMINATORY HB2 DURING NC EVENT: Hillary Clinton minced no words yesterday in laying out the terrible damage being done to North Carolina by the anti-LGBTQ HB2 law championed by Gov. Pat McCrory. Said Clinton: “HB2 is another example of trying to discriminate against people that doesn’t have any place in our modern society. You’ve seen this first hand in North Carolina — discrimination is not only wrong, it’s bad for business. The NBA, you know, cancelled the game. PayPal cancelled bringing I think 400 jobs. Others are not coming to this beautiful state because they don’t want to be associated with the discriminatory, bigoted policies of your governor and legislature. Now one thing you can do about that is change your governor in November! And while you’re at it, change one of your senators. We’re going to need reinforcements up in Washington.” Watch it here.

  • Sign o’ the times as McCrory plays the HB2 blame game… North Carolina’s WRAL reports that McCrory is now claiming that the North Carolina Chamber of Commerce helped write the dangerous HB2 law. One problem — the station reports that the claim from McCrory is “something the North Carolina Chamber has denied for months. The statement appears to put the Republican, who is seeking re-election this fall, directly at odds with the state’s largest business lobby…” More from WRAL.

Rapinoe Says Spirit Owner Squelched National Anthem Protest Because He’s Homophobic

Rapinoe Says Spirit Owner Squelched National Anthem Protest Because He’s Homophobic

Megan Rapinoe

Out FC Reign star Megan Rapinoe says Bill Lynch, the owner of the Washington Spirit, undermined her protest of the national anthem in part because he’s homophobic.

As we reported Thursday, Spirit owner Bill Lynch (right) played the national anthem while players were in the locker room before a game between the Reign and Sprit on Wednesday night so Rapinoe couldn’t kneel in protest as she had done on Sunday.

lynchRapinoe knelt during the anthem in solidarity with 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who’s protesting the nation’s treatment of black Americans. In the wake of her protest, Rapinoe said, “Being a gay American, I know what it means to look at the flag and not have it protect all of your liberties.”

The Washington Post reports that Rapinoe was asked whether she believes Lynch’s decision to undermine her protest was related to her sexual orientation, especially given that the Spirit is one of the few teams in the National Women’s Soccer League that doesn’t have an LGBT Pride Night.

“I do. Yeah, I do,” Rapinoe said. “I have had conversations with Spirit players current and past, the fact that they don’t have a Pride Night. They have gay players like everyone else [in the league]. They’ve made it pretty clear, at least internally, that that’s not a game they are interested in, which is homophobic to me. I don’t know if it was directly at me because I’m gay and it’s a protest I am making as a gay woman. Bit of a stretch, but yeah I do think that Bill Lynch is homophobic.”

Lynch responded by suggesting that Rapinoe “got lost in the moment and blurted something out.”

“I certainly don’t agree with the statement, by any stretch,” he told WaPo. “We’re absolutely inclusive. Anyone claiming we’re not inclusive, it’s silly. [Sexuality] is not even something that gets discussed. We don’t make decisions based on race, gender or sexual preference. Unless someone is talking about it, I have no idea what their sexual preference is.”

Needless to say, Lynch’s use of “sexual preference” — an archaic term that wrongly implies being gay is a choice — doesn’t exactly bolster his argument.

‘Finding Prince Charming’ Is Looking For Love In The Most Boring Places [RECAP]

‘Finding Prince Charming’ Is Looking For Love In The Most Boring Places [RECAP]

Robert Sepulveda Jr. and Lance Bass on Finding Prince Charming recap

For all the drama preceding the premiere of Logo’s new reality dating competition Finding Prince Charming, last night’s 90-minute introduction seemed to go out of its way not to ruffle any feathers.

Perhaps a better title would have been The Bland and the Beautiful.

Our titular Prince Charming, Robert Sepúlveda Jr., looks like he was created by an Instagram algorithm. He’s got just the right amount of tattoos, just the right amount of scruff on his face, just the right amount salt-and-pepper hair, just the right amount of chest hair and just the right amount of abs — which in this case is beyond just a six-pack, I think it’s a 30-rack. I tried to get an accurate tally of his visible abdominal muscles, but I honestly lost count.

RELATED: Dan Savage Proposes Some Winning Fixes for Logo’s Gay ‘Bachelor’ Clone ‘Finding Prince Charming’

He’s a successful business owner, he has a supportive family, he paints crosswalk rainbows for charity, he travels the world, and yet, he’s still painfully uninteresting. He’s the kind of guy who takes a picture in front of the Leaning Tower of Pisa to make it look like he’s holding it up. I think that says it all.

The men vying for his attention are essentially more of the same. In an attempt to “defy stereotypes” the suitors talk about really wanting monogamy, fairy tale love and how being gay is “not all pride and pageantry.” It’s as if they were all pulled from early-aughts “post-gay” purgatory and given 2016 tasteful facial hair.

I mean, just statistically speaking, you’re telling me none of these guys are showing up hoping to find a satisfying member of their polyamorous triad? No one wants to be monogamish? No one wants to just meet a guy to flip houses and share a Grindr account with? I’m all for debunking the belief that every gay man is sex-crazed and incapable of monogamy, but, like, some of us are? It all comes off not only as overly quaint, but actually disingenuous.

It’s not only lust that’s been removed for the sake of #samelove, but these guys’ personalities seemed to have been removed with it. What a joyless, humorless collection of gay men. Are we so afraid of stereotypes that they aren’t even allowed to quip?!

Robby and Sam on Finding Prince Charming

The exception being Robby (above left), the house’s token queen. One of the only moments of actual drama comes in a lightning fast scene where one of the other guys, Sam (above right), calls out Robby for being so flamboyant, admonishing him to “fix his dress.” Robby, bless him, takes it well. The next day, he’s using his spray tanner and putting on his tiny pink trunks, and, honestly, he adds a desperately needed splash of color in every way. Here’s hoping he sticks around, if only to challenge the overwhelming masc4masc mentality.

Sam’s single (weak) read was the only flash of drama to wring from the 90-minute premiere. They tried to stir up a little interest when the guys first arrived by having Prince Charming mingle among the suitors as if he was one of them. It provided all the tension of an episode of Blue’s Clues. Some of the guys had already guessed the twist within the first few moments of meeting him. One of the guys, Paul, mistakenly revealed to Robert that he only dated short guys before realizing he was talking to our tall drink of Prince Charming. That’s as scandalous as it got.

RELATED: Logo Had No Idea Their ‘Gay Bachelor’ Robert Sepulveda Jr. Once Worked as an Escort

Robert revealed himself during a painful opening “game” where the guys introduced themselves with a hashtag. And how did the boys brand themselves? #chemistry. #spontaneity. #perfectionist. #bemyself. I’m telling you, not an Oscar Wilde in the bunch.

On day two, the guys all mingled at a pool party where not a single one of them was wearing a bulging bikini from Andrew Christian. (Even their swimwear was straight-washed!) The guys were all jockeying for one-on-one convos with Robert, and, as a viewer listening in on these dreadfully boring convos, I would have rather drowned.

Paul (would we call him the “heightist?”) doesn’t go out of his way to get his time with Robert before the party is over, so he races after Prince Charming as he exits. He blurts out that he’s been shy because his ex died last Thanksgiving. Maybe the editing was unkind, but it felt a bit like a desperate non-sequitur.

Robert Sepulveda Jr.

Whatever, it works. During the elimination ceremony, where Robert bestows black ties on the boys he wants to keep, Paul manages to stay and join the other guys who have to stand there with their collars all messed up wearing ties that clash with their blazers.

Instead, Robert sends home Charlie — a slightly bearier dude who talked smack about the other guys during his chat with Robert in the pool — and Nick, who was actually sort of awkward and probably the most “average” looking of any of these guys. Neither of those men were remotely “fat,” but with them gone, the average body fat percentage in the house now hovers at about .03. And that’s even if you take into account losing personal trainer Brodney.

ALSO: ‘Gay Bachelor’ Robert Sepulveda Jr.: My Past as an Escort ‘is the Past’ – WATCH

A preview for the remainder of the season appears to be mostly just as banal. It seems in slavishly emulating The Bachelor formula Finding Prince Charming forgot some of the most important elements: villains, crazies, trash. Maybe the claws will come out, but even on The Bachelor these dummies come out of the limo swinging, full-tilt crazy. The overly earnest edit seems to be so afraid of its responsibility to portray same-sex love with respect it’s forgotten this is supposed to be reality TV. Even if the show declines to explore the uniqueness and intricacies of queer relationships, that doesn’t mean it has to be so soulless and sanitized.

The real irony is until we have a reality dating competition as messy and embarrassing as straight people it won’t actually be equal.

What did you think of the premiere of Finding Prince Charming?
