Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe – recipient of LGBT mental health charity The Trevor Project’s Hero Award in 2011 – has said gay actors fear coming out because they could be typecast in gay roles.

In an interview with the BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire, Radcliffe said that although “Neil Patrick Harris has made a career as playing the straightest guy on television…it is sad, but there is a kind of line where people say ‘Oh no people won’t buy him as straight anymore.”

Speaking about his role in the thriller Imperium, he added that it is “pretty undeniable” that Hollywood is racist. In the film, Radcliffe plays Nate Foster, an FBI agent who goes undercover to infiltrate a white supremacist group. He said that while the film industry likes to think of itself as being “very, very progressive,” it has been “lagging behind in all sorts of areas.”

Addressing rumors that the London stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child could be turned into a film, the actor said he is currently not interested in reprising his role but added “maybe if 30 years had passed I would be thinking differently.”

Radcliffe also said it’s unbelievable that Donald Trump, a “wealthy, privileged man has somehow managed to convince people that he is not part of the elite and that he is sort of a man of the people.”

Funny. Romantic. Intimate.  And Irresistable. This describes the new series recently debuting on NBCUniversal’s streaming platform SEESO and created by out stand-up comedians Cameron Esposito and Rhea Butcher.  Take My Wife follows these two incredibly talented and funny women, married in real life, as they navigate their on- and off-stage careers living together, laughing together and dealing with friends, comics, neurotic neighbors, a baby locked inside their apartment, and an immense student loan debt.

Cameron and Rhea in bedRhea and Cameron have created a series that tells a story similar to their own lives, two lesbian stand-up comics sharing the stage and their home, but amplified for comedic and situational humor.  They take us along for a ride that includes: their off-beat neighbor (Laura Kightlinger), their best friend (Zeke Nicholson), a headlining comic (Matt Braunger), a hollywood actress intent on playing a Cameron-esque character (Janet Varney) and an ensemble of funny comics, including the kooky Maria Bamford.

In Episode One (which you can watch here in its entirety), Cameron and Rhea find that daily struggles make for good comedy … and stand-up makes for good couples therapy.  It begins with their wedding day, and a rather clumsy carrying the bride over the threshold, and quickly rewinds one year in the past.

GLAAD is proud to share this exclusive interview with the creators of Take My Wife, Cameron Esposito and Rhea Butcher.

GLAAD:  Given that Cameron has been quoted as saying that the characters and plotlines on the show don’t necessarily mirror your life together, but are thematic in nature, do the core turning points in your relationship somewhat mirror what we see onscreen?

CAMERON:  Everything in the show is reflective of our relationship, our business and our experience working together. Characters were created from a combination of people and moments in our lives, heightened for the screen, but changed so as to protect those folks’ identities.

RHEA:  But in a lot of ways: it’s us and it’s our world.

GLAAD:  Episode 2 walks a fine a line of humor while talking about rape and sexual abuse.  What was that like to work on, and how did the “I am too” montage of survivors at the end come about?

CAMERON:  It was really important to Rhea and myself that we include a more nuanced answer to the question of whether rape jokes are funny or appropriate. So often we have seen it positioned as if all comics are men, and all men want to make light of rape and all women are audience members and all audience members want to censor comics. Sexual assault touches so many people – and so many women – that statistically, someone in your audience has definitely been there. In fact, another comic on the bill with you has probably been there too. Survivors are in every room, at every show and on every bill.

RHEA:  We knew we wanted to convey that visually and the “I am too” was pitched in our writers room. We are so impressed with and proud of the way our director, actors and editors handled it.

Rhea and Cameron doing stand-upGLAAD:  During a GQ interview last summer, Amy Schumer said that she sees the difference in how women comedians are treated versus men, and all she wants is to be treated like the comic who just sold out the venue.  Given that this feeling may be shared by others, does being out lesbians compound that unfortunate bias with booking agents or even audiences?

CAMERON:  Hmm…the way this question is weighted is pretty strong. At this point, audiences and bookers know who they are getting and my booking agent and the rest of my representation have never asked me to be anyone I am not.

RHEA:  Mine neither.

CAMERON:  That said, of course we face workplace discrimination, annoyance, difficulty, whatever you want to call it. I believe that most women do. Helping to change the working world for women is one of my greatest missions in life. And the same goes for LGBT folks.

RHEA: We’ve come a long way but we’ve got a long way to go. Getting there is a mission Cameron and I share.

GLAAD: Throughout the six episodes, you cover a range of issues from parenthood and massive student loan debt, to open relationships and marriage.  Are there any areas of your lives that are off limits for your stand-up and your show?

RHEA:  Nudity.

CAMERON:  Yeah. Rhea said we couldn’t be naked in the show.

RHEA:  I did.

CAMERON: Thank you, Rhea. That was the right choice.

GLAAD: There’s a creative use of the camera throughout the series.  I especially remember the montage where you’re both trying on jackets and fixing your hair, and it looks like something out of a music video.  How did you conceive of the “look” of the series when you decided to begin the project?

Cameron and her jacket

RHEA: We had a great director and DP (director of photography), Sam Zvibleman and Andy Rydzewski, who shadowed Rhea and I at our real life live show at the UCB Theater (Upright Citizens Brigade) and at our home, and worked with us to try and get authenticity and honesty out of a small budget.

GLAAD:  Rhea, is that fist-bump happy dance from Episode 1 something that’s at the heart of your personality?  (Gotta say, it made me smile!)

RHEA: Uh yeah. I’m a great dancer.

Rhea and CameronGLAAD:  In your opinion, what would Hollywood have to do to start showing the diversity of our LGBTQ lives and stories so that “Take My Wife” becomes the norm and not the exception to what’s out there?

CAMERON:  Involve queer folks at every level – in the writers room, at the producers table, onscreen, etc.

RHEA:  We know how to create and sustain queer characters because we are queer.

CAMERON: And here. Get used to it.

At a time when Hollywood must do better, we applaud NBCUniversal and SEESO for including an authentic LGBTQ storyline within its launch of premium, streaming HD content.  But, most of all, we congratulate Cameron Esposito and Rhea Butcher for crafting a story that provides a platform where audiences can see, through tears of laughter, two queer women laughing, loving, creating and performing.  By amplifying their own personal stories, Cam and Rhea accelerate acceptance for all LGBTQ people … here and around the world.

Can Tons Of Celebrities, Promise Of Mark Ruffalo Nude Scene Turn Out The Vote?

Mark Ruffalo

Director Joss Whedon has assembled a “shit ton” of celebrities in a new video asking you to vote, with the promise of a Mark Ruffalo nude scene if you do.

Whedon returned to Twitter to announce the spot, which he filmed as part of his new Super PAC Save the Day‘s initiative to get progressive voters out to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 8.

Robert Downey, Jr., Neil Patrick Harris, James Franco, Julianne Moore, Rosie Perez, Keegan-Michael Key, Don Cheadle and a host of others, including a couple regular people for the “unpolished sincerity” factor, do their best to convince the American public to cast their ballot for Hillary Clinton and other Democratic candidates.

They argue against the talking points often heard by those considering a protest vote, or those considering staying home, saying it is inaccurate to claim that both sides are equally bad, or that one vote doesn’t matter.

The Save the Day website explains: “We are a short-form production company dedicated to the idea that voting is a necessary and heroic act. That every voice in this wonderfully diverse nation should, and must, be heard. That the only thing that can save democracy is the act that defines it. We are committed to fighting the apathy, cynicism, and honest confusion that keeps citizens from using their vote. And to reminding an increasingly out-of-touch and compromised set of representatives that they are answerable to the people they were hired to serve.”

Whedon returned to Twitter in order to promote the video.

“Hey! Did I miss anything? Lol jk the world is on fire here’s a thing I made savetheday.vote” he tweeted. He followed that up with another tweet, reading, “Proof it’s really me: I already failed on my 1st tweet because tech – the link to the vid I made is THIS” with a link to the PSA on YouTube, which you can find below.

NEW MUSIC: Julee Cruise, Kim Gordon, Led Zeppelin, Nice As F**k

julee-cruise

This week in New Music: ahead of the Twin Peaks hysteria, Julee Cruise joins forces for a single release with King Dude, Sonic Youth‘s Kim Gordon releases her first track under her own name, a live collection restores missing Led Zeppelin tracks and an unfortunately named minimalist post punk collaboration from Nice As F**k.

Julee Cruise & King Dude – Sing Each Other’s Songs For You

julee-cruise-king-dudeWith anticipation for series (perhaps) three of Twin Peaks building, it’s a wonderful thing to see Julee Cruise return with a 2-track release with King Dude on which they – as the title might suggest – sing each other’s songs.

Cruise’s contribution is a cover of King Dude’s “Animal” which basically gives the track the ethereal, fuzzy loveliness we have come to expect while Dude provides a cover of Twin Peaks classic “Rockin’ Back Inside My Heart.”

The 7″ limited edition release is available here.

Kim Gordon – “Murdered Out”

rs-kim-gordon-934b83a8-890c-4254-aeb8-6f123d2786acAlthough recording for more than 35 years now, Sonic Youth legend Kim Gordon has never issued anything under her own name until now.

Apparently inspired by the Los Angeles practice of blacking out identifying marks on cars (really?), “Murdered Out” isn’t too different from Gordon’s massive output over the decades.

“I was interested in how [black matte spray],” Gordon told Rolling Stone, “is a subliminal way of X-ing yourself out of the culture. It’s intentionally restrictive; it reclaims something that’s shiny, fetishistic, what was once a driving force of American production and part of L.A. culture – the car. [Black matte spray] is away saying that there’s nothing in mainstream culture for you.” Fair enough.

“Murdered Out” opens with a massive ripper sound that gives way to her guttural rasp. Probably a bit heavier than a lot of Sonic Youth’s work, it’s a banger.

Led Zeppelin – The Complete BBC Sessions

led-zeppelinThis remastered reissue of five Led Zeppelin sessions recorded for the BBC in 1969 – along with a live performance recorded in 1971 – includes a number of tracks that weren’t included in the 1997 release.

Of most interest to fans will be three tracks (the 1969 Rhythm and Blues Session) including the only known recording of “Sunshine Woman.”

A collection documenting the early days of a work in progress, this is a must for all fans.

Nice As F**k – Nice As F**k

nice-as-fuckI’m leaving this one until last because the band/album name is unfortunate, screaming as it does hipster bullshit.

That’s a crying shame because this collaboration between Jenny Lewis (Rilo Kiley), Erika Forster (Au Revoir Simone) and Tennessee Thomas (The Like) is one of my favorite releases of the year so far.

An entirely press- and promotion-free zone, the album comes in at 26 minutes over nine songs, each song featuring Lewis singing over post punk beats almost entirely without guitar or keyboards.

It’s hard to imagine there will be a follow up album. This is three friends with a lifetime of music between them trying something new and clearly loving it.

Love it or hate it, they leave you with a 40-second “Nice as F**k” theme, “We’re nice as f**k, wish you good luck.”

They really are though.

Fake News Article Fools Fans Into Thinking Robert Pattinson Came Out as Gay

Fake News Article Fools Fans Into Thinking Robert Pattinson Came Out as Gay

robert pattinson gay

The internet temporarily had a freak out over a rumor that Robert Pattinson had come out as gay.

Speculation regarding Pattinson, who has not come out as gay, began when hoax news site Now88News published a supposed “exclusive” interview with the Twilight star to talk about his sexuality:

…Twilight star Robert Pattinson has admitted to a secret holiday romance with 31-year-old male model Brad Owens.

“I completely fell for this guy and at first I thought I was confused with my emotions and I did not want to let my female fans down … But after careful consideration I felt it was best to come out to the public and confirm that I am gay” Says Robert.

And while the fake article definitely caused some consternation on Twitter, it didn’t seem to reach Twihard Defcon 1.

First, the Brangelina break up. Second, did Robert Pattinson just come out as gay? What’s next? Dwayne Johnson is a REAL tooth fairy? Lol

Wait wait is it true that Robert Pattinson is gay? 😳

— Jakobi (@jacobjhunr) September 21, 2016

As International Business Times notes, Pattinson coming out as gay would have made for an interesting plot twist in the public life of the movie star given that his famous ex-girlfriend Kristen Stewart is now in a relationship with a woman, Alicia Cargile:

They have been dating on and off for the past three years. In an August 2016 interview with the New York Times, Stewart opened up about her romance with Cargile, who is also her assistant, saying: “I love her so much.

“I would never talk about any of my relationships before, but once I started dating girls it seemed like there was an opportunity to represent something really positive. I still want to protect my personal life, but I don’t want to seem like I’m protecting the idea, so that does sort of feel like I owe something to people.”

New Blood Checks Into the Horror Hospital On the Premiere of ‘Scream Queens’ [RECAP]

New Blood Checks Into the Horror Hospital On the Premiere of ‘Scream Queens’ [RECAP]

Scream Queens

While this year’s installment of American Horror Story appears to have exchanged all the sexy, campy drama for more legitimate backwoods scares, Ryan Murphy’s other spooky series, Scream Queens, is embracing all its ludicrous charms. The second season transfers most of the cast from Wallace University to a hospital setting for a tale that’s looking to be a little bit Grey’s Anatomy, a little bit Monster Mash.

All those borderline tasteless zingers you’ve come to expect from a Ryan Murphy production are back in full-force, and — with a cast that includes newcomers John Stamos, Taylor Lautner and Jerry O’Connell — you know the show won’t shy away from objectifying its male leads. (We all remember how Nick Jonas was put on display last season, right?) Even last night’s premiere featured an extended Stamos shower scene.

We recommend taking 50 ccs of not getting too hung up on the details and rehashing the latest mystery in our recap below.

Scream Queens

Of course, our story begins way back in 1985. This time, instead of a sorority party, it’s a hospital’s staff Halloween party. Dr. Jerry O’Connell and Nurse Thomas (played by the insufferable Laura Bell Bundy) are getting their party on when a very upset pregnant lady comes crashing, demanding they help her husband suffering from COPD. To placate the worried wife, Dr. O’Connell promises to bring her husband down to surgery and perform the life-saving operation himself. What a guy!

Instead, he and Nurse Thomas wheel the husband out to the conveniently situated swamp out back and dump the body in before covering it with O’Connell’s green devil costume. Now, back to the Jell-O shots!

Fast-forward to present day, and a lot has changed for the survivors of the Wallace University murders. For starters, Dean Munsch (Jamie Lee Curtis) became a feminist icon and celebrity. She parlayed the honorary doctorate she was awarded after it was taken back from Bill Cosby into a trailblazing new medical research facility/hospital focused on curing the incurable. Ho boy.

A hospital needs a staff, and so Munsch heads out to headhunt, picking up Wallace alum Zayday (Keke Palmer, an actress that may never surpass her work in the Dolly Parton-Queen Latifah church choir opus Joyful Noise). Z is already in med school and actually passionate about medicine, but the promise of having the rest of her med school paid for by Munsch is enough to lure her into these shenanigans.

Scream Queens

Let’s be real though, we’re here for the Chanels. When we last left our heinous trio of mean girls they were institutionalized and (maybe?) about to be offed by the Red Devil somehow? Don’t dwell, because they’ve been exonerated, thanks to a Making A Murderer-esque documentary series called Entrap A Kappa Kappa. Everyone’s favorite, Denise Hemphill (Niecy Nash), got some footage of Hester (Lea Michele) confessing to the whole thing. That means the Chanels are free to terrorize once again.

Sadly, it’s not easy to bounce back from involvement in a slew of murders, so the Chanels take whatever work they can find. No. 5 (Abigail Breslin) is a receptionist at a dentist’s office. No. 3 (Billie Lourd) is mopping up, um, run-off at a fertility clinic. And Chanel Prime (Emma Roberts) found her true calling drawing blood. Apparently, that’s all the medical training the girls need for Munsch to recruit them into her medical practice. Whatever.

Scream Queens

Rounding out the hospital staff are Dr. Brock Holt (Stamos) and Dr. Cassidy Cascade (Lautner). Despite having the porniest porn name to ever porn, the pair of handsome doctors appear to be actually qualified to work in a hospital. That doesn’t mean there isn’t anything strange about them. Cascade is ice cold to the touch (and also delivers lines like a frozen block of ice, but that might not be an intentional choice). Holt, on the other hand (pun intended), has a (possibly possessed) transplanted hand after mangling his in a Super Bowl-related garbage disposal accident.

Then there’s my personal favorite new character, Nurse Hawful, that sees right through the Chanels’ nonsense. I like the fact she doesn’t suffer fools, but I LOVE the fact she’s played by Kirstie Alley, looking bangin’ and long overdue for a comeback.

The hospital’s first case is pretty hairy. Literally. It’s a woman who has gone full-blown Cousin It, played by SNL’s Cecily Strong. The best solution Zayday can come up with is to give the girl a lobotomy to squelch the part of the brain that makes her hair grow. But it’s actually Chanel Prime that realizes the girl’s diet is to blame for all the testosterone fueling the hair growth. They switch her diet, give her some hormones and it works. It works a little too well, actually. All of the patient’s hair falls out, requiring the Chanels to really leverage their strengths: A makeover!

Scream Queens

If the hospital’s mantra is “There is no problem a wig can’t fix,” sign me up. The makeover lends itself to the best line of the night. It comes courtesy Chanel One, advising the patient on her new Tinder profile picture: “Side angle, good light, you’re still 15 pounds from a New Jersey six.”

Satisfied with her work, Chanel Prime and Chanel No. 3 head out for date night, leaving Chanel No. 5 to work the graveyard shift. All alone in the hydrotherapy tanks, Chanel No. 5 and the formerly hirsute patient are locked in, but they aren’t alone. The Green Devil emerges, dripping neon green sludge, and hacks the patient’s head clean off. He raises his blade to No. 5, but the episode ends before we learn her fate.

Look, no one’s here for a tightly-paced mystery that’s grounded in gritty reality and thoroughly thought through, so let’s just take the most base criticism off the table. This is not prestige television. All that aside, I will say I feel less invested in this season’s mystery. In season one, we knew there was a direct connection from the murderer to one of our protagonists right away. This feels a little more random and less compelling.

Something I am intrigued by, however, is the classic cinema monster motif hanging over the show. We’ve got a Swamp Monster. We had a “werewolf.” We’ve got Holt’s Frankensteined hand, and maybe Dr. Cascade is a vampire or an abominable snowman or something, who knows. I might be way off here, but I get the feeling the show is moving even further into the realm of fantasy, or at least making an homage to B-movie monsters, and I am here for it.

What did you guys think? Are you sticking around for this season?
