shirtless James Franco Goat

As his frat brothers (including one played by Nick Jonas) look on, James Franco taunts a pledge into punching him in a new clip from the hazing film Goat, which hits select theaters and VOD platforms this week.

As we reported earlier:

Goat follows a 19 year-old boy, reeling from a terrifying assault, who enrolls into college with his brother (Nick Jonas) and pledges the same fraternity. What happens there, in the name of “brotherhood” tests the boy and his loyalty to his brother in brutal ways.

For the uninitiated, Goat is based on a memoir by Brad Land, published in 2004.

The first trailer for the film underscored the violent, machismo and also homoerotic elements at play in frat life.

Here’s an official synopsis of the film, via The Playlist

Reeling from a terrifying assault over the summer, 19-year-old Brad Land (Ben Schnetzer) starts college determined to get his life back to normal. His brother, Brett (Nick Jonas), is already established on campus and with a fraternity that allures Brad with its promise of protection, popularity, and life-long friendships. Brad is desperate to belong but as he sets out to join the fraternity his brother exhibits reservations, a sentiment that threatens to divide them. As the pledging ritual moves into hell week, a rite that promises to usher these unproven boys into manhood, the stakes violently increase with a series of torturous and humiliating events.  What occurs in the name of ‘brotherhood’ tests both boys and their relationship in brutal ways.

Jeffrey Tambor Jill Soloway Donald Trump Hitler

The Amazon drama Transparent, which stars Jeffrey Tambor as trans matriarch Maura Pfefferman, had a major presence at last night’s Emmy Awards. Tambor and creator Jill Soloway both took home awards.

RELATED: 2016 Emmy Award Winners: FULL LIST

Jeffrey Tambor won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. Tambor called on Hollywood to cast more trans people in trans roles:

“To you people out there, you producers and you network owners and you agents and you creative sparks, please give transgender talent a chance. Give them auditions. Give them their story. Do that. And, also, one more thing, I would not be unhappy were I the last cisgender male to play a female transgender on television. We have work to do.”

Watch:

Soloway offered a fiery speech after winning for Directing for a Comedy Series.

Said Soloway:

“People ask me if it’s hard to be a director and I say no, life is very hard. Being a good partner, being a good mother, being a good person is hard. Being a good person is so f-ing easy. I get to make my dreams come true. It’s a privilege and it also creates privilege when you take women, people of color, trans people, queer people and you put them at the center of a story, the subjects instead of the objects, you change the world we found out….”

Added Soloway: “I’ve always wanted to be part of a movement, the civil rights movement, the feminist movement. This T show allows me to take my dreams about unlikeable Jewish people, queer folk, trans folk and make them the heroes. Thank you to the trans community for your lived lives. We need to stop violence against trans women and topple the patriarchy. Topple the patriarchy!”

Watch:

And more fireworks came backstage. Soloway and Tambor tore into Donald Trump. Soloway compared him to Hitler in the way that he “otherizes” people:

“Obviously we’re trying to do a comedy, and a family comedy, but in Season 2 we follow the Pfeffermans back to Germany to Berlin right before the Holocaust and we try to tell a story about the Women’s Music Festival where there were people who were weighing in as to whether somebody was a woman or not, and we try to related it to the story of the Holocaust when people were trying to weigh in whether or not somebody was a human being.”

“We feel like it’s so incredibly timely – the notion of otherizing people as a way to gain political power,” Soloway added. “So Jews were ‘otherized’ in Nazi Germany to gain political power for Hitler. And right now Donald Trump is doing the same thing. He’s ‘otherizing’ people. He calls women pigs if they don’t look like beauty pageant contestants. He blames Muslims and Mexicans for our problems. He makes fun of disabled people. This is ‘Otherizing’ with a capital O.”

Soloway concluded: “It has been used in our history before to start and win wars. And he needs to be called out at every chance he gets for being one of the most a dangerous monsters to ever approach our lifetimes. He’s a complete dangerous monster. Any moment that I have to call Trump out for being an inheritor to Hitler I will.”

Added Tambor: “Ditto. Ditto. Ditto. On everything you said.”

Tambor was then asked about Caitlyn Jenner and her relationship with the trans community.

Said Tambor: “I love Caitlyn. And she is courageous. And in her decision, she has floated all boats. And that’s why we love her. And she kills on our show.”

Laverne Cox also had a major presence at the Emmys. She presented the award for Directing for a Variety Special (Grease Live! won the award). In her speech, Cox echoed Tambor’s thoughts (if we can find the video we’ll post it) about trans actors.

Rome Mayor Virginia Raggi officiated the city’s first same-sex civil union on Saturday.

Luca de Sario and Francisco Raffaele Villarusso had moved to Spain and considered entering into the union there. However, they moved back to Italy after a law allowing for same-sex unions came into force three months ago.

Euronews reports:

While recognised as a step forward, the Civil Union bill has also come under fire for a controversial adoption clause.

Reports have also emerged in the Italian press of difficulties if the couple decides to combine their surnames, rather than choosing one family name. This is said to cause tax and identity problems that don’t exist for heterosexual couples.

Double-barrelling a name after a civil union is considered a ‘name-change’, meaning the couple’s tax code is changed. Further still, under Italian law, a ‘name-change’ is considered an ‘identity change’ meaning all identity documents and insurance will have to be changed and new social security cards applied for, La Repubblica reports.

In May, Italy became the last European Union country to legislate for same-sex civil unions after lawmakers passed a bill that would have forced Prime Minister Matteo Renzi to resign had the vote failed.

auguri Luca de Sario e Francisco !!!!!!! presto anche noi !!! <3 <3 t.co/xHenfsSNFM

Four Back To School Tips for LGBTQ Parents/Guardians

Four Back To School Tips for LGBTQ Parents/Guardians

Post submitted by Welcoming Schools Project Coordinator Charles Girard

The beginning of a new school year can create stressors for all parents, guardians and other caregivers. However, being an LGBTQ person with a child going to school can be especially difficult and HRC is here to help. HRC Foundation’s Welcoming Schools has developed a list of strategies that LGBTQ families and educators can use to create a more LGBTQ-inclusive school and classroom this year. Here are four back to school tips for LGBTQ parents/guardians:

1. Provide your child’s school with LGBTQ-inclusive resources

Welcoming Schools has incredible resources, such as age-appropriate books that showcase diverse families and ready-to-use lesson plans that embrace family diversity. Providing the school with these materials will help your school to better address the diversity of family structures and to help educators know how to answer questions like “Why does Janelle have two dads?” or “What doesgay’ mean?

2. Get involved in the school community

Does your school have a parent/guardian group? Are there opportunities to volunteer in the classroom or to attend a field trip? Not all families have the time or resources to volunteer at school, but if you do, you will have the opportunity to meet the school community and to have them meet you.

If you have less time, simply keeping an open dialogue with your child’s teacher can provide you with a connection to school and help your child thrive.

3. Speak up for your family and child

Does the school’s media center lack books about LGBTQ families? Does a form ask for the names of your child’s “mother and father” instead of their “legal caregiver(s)”?

If you can, speak up and provide feedback to the school to make it more LGBTQ-inclusive.  It is not only beneficial to your family, but to all members of the school community because a responsibility of educators is to teach students to navigate difference in order  to become better citizens of the school, the community, and the world.

4. Seek support from other families

Seeking support from other families is essential. Not only will you and your child develop friendships with families that are the same and/or different than your family, but an established network can help you as a group to make changes that  will help the school be more inclusive, such as developing an enumerated bullying prevention policy or encouraging the school to hold professional development on family diversity or gender

For even more ways to support your child this school year, read the rest of our tips.

HRC Welcoming Schools is a comprehensive approach to creating respectful and supportive elementary schools with resources and professional development to embrace family diversity, create LGBTQ-inclusive schools, prevent bias-based bullying and gender stereotyping, and support transgender and gender-expansive students.
