Trump Says There are 2 Million ‘Criminal Aliens’ in the US. It’s Not Clear Where He Got that Number.

Donald Trump says people don’t even talk about the issue. But he does. He calls them “criminal aliens” — undocumented immigrants with criminal records living in the United States. And he says there are 2 million of them.

“Zero tolerance for criminal aliens. Zero. Zero. Zero. They don’t come in here, they don’t come in here,” Trump said during a major speech about immigration on Wednesday in Phoenix, Arizona.

“Day one, my first hour in office, those people are gone,” the Republican presidential nominee said.

“According to federal data, there are at least 2 million, 2 million, think of it, criminal aliens now inside of our country,” Trump said. “Two million people, criminal aliens. We will begin moving them out, day one, as soon as I take office.”

So, how accurate is that figure? It’s hard to say with much precision, considering we’re talking about a population that’s largely living in the shadows.

Michelle Mittelstadt of the Migration Policy Institute, which describes itself as an independent, non-partisan think tank in Washington, DC, says her organization looked at numbers from the US Department of Homeland Security and came up with a different estimate from Trump’s 2 million.

“We estimated that there are 820,000 unauthorized immigrants in the United States who’ve ever been convicted of a crime,” Mittelstadt says.

The research she’s referring to looked at the estimated 11 million people living in the US without legal authorization. And it determined that 820,000 had some kind of criminal conviction.

Of that total, Mittelstadt says about 300,000 people had been convicted of a felony and 390,000 had been convicted of a serious misdemeanor, like robbery or drug distribution.

The 2 million figure cited by Trump may have come from the Center for Immigration Studies, another Washington, DC-based think tank that advocates tighter restrictions on immigration. Its estimate appears to be including green card holders.

Green card holders are legal residents of the US and they number about 13 million people. Including them in a tally of non-citizens with criminal records might account for Trump’s higher figure.

Trump accuses the Obama administration of failing to focus on this group of undocumented immigrants and to taking seriously the threat they pose to the American public.

“We will terminate the Obama administration’s deadly non-enforcement policies that allow thousands of criminal aliens to freely roam our streets, walk around, do whatever they want to do. Crime all over the place. That’s over, that’s over folks,” Trump said on Wednesday.

But Mittelstadt says Trump’s vow to target illegal immigrants who’ve committed crimes doesn’t sound like a reversal of the Obama administration’s approach.

“By prioritizing for removal criminal aliens, gang members, recent entrants, which were three of the categories that Mr. Trump mentioned last night, those actually are already groups of people who have been identified for removal,” Mittelstadt says.

“In some ways, it’s a continuation of the policy that is already in place.”

In 2014, President Obama made removing undocumented immigrants convicted of a felony a top priority for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. But Mittelstadt says this enforcement focus goes back about a decade.

The number of deportations from the US hit its peak in 2013, with more than 435,000 people being removed from the country, according to the Department of Homeland Security. Almost 200,000 of those people had been convicted of crimes.

Here’s a comparison that might be useful for understanding all these figures.

Let’s assume Trump was exactly right, and there really are 2 million so-called criminal aliens roaming the streets of America — how does that compare to the larger US population?

When you include everyone who’s been arrested or detained, and not necessarily convicted of a crime, about 30 percent of the US adult population is thought to have a police record.

That’s about one in three adults.

An eight-year-old girl has been taken into police custody over accusations of “lesbianism.”

Uganda is one of the worst places in the world to be LGBTQ, with a penalty of possible life in prison for anyone found engaging in sexual acts with someone of the same sex.

Jinja Police Child Family Protection, which is based in the eastern region of the country, claims they brought the child in for questioning after a neighbor reported witnessing her “luring” female friends to a nearby farm where they would engage in sex acts.

The girl is said to have admitted under questioning to having engaged in similar behavior at school.

Authorities are investigating the adults in her life to see if someone might have “influenced” the girl.

Catherine Wobuyaga, head of the Jinja Police Child Family Protection unit, cautions parents to watch out for people who “lure underage children into illicit relationships.”

Uganda recently considered a bill that would have made homosexuality punishable by death. American evangelicals have had an influence over the country, as well as over Africa in general, encouraging them to pass viciously antigay laws.

This year, police broke up a pride event in Uganda and arrested approximately 20 people, moments after an Orlando tribute.

Hermine Plans Extended Stay in the Northeast?

Hermine Plans Extended Stay in the Northeast?

Hermine

Hurricane Hermine made landfall in Florida last night, the first hurricane to do so since 2005. The system made landfall as a Category 1 storm and has weakened since moving over land toward Georgia. It is forecast to head over the coast of the Carolinas and emerge from the outer banks into the mid-Atlantic.

To interest of those of us living in the northeast is what it does after that, and from indications on most models, it’s going to hang out here for a while:

Writes Phil at CapeCodWeather.Net:

Hermine will then turn northward and slow its forward speed, eventually stalling over the waters south of New England and east of the Mid-Atlantic. Remarkably, because it becomes blocked from the main steering currents, Hermine is then likely to sit and spin south of Nantucket for several days, perhaps lingering until the middle to end of the upcoming work week.

For now, it still appears as though the worst of the storm’s wind and rain will stay offshore, south of the Cape and Islands, with the weather here resembling that of a prolonged moderate nor’easter.

However, having a tropical system so close by for so many days is rather disconcerting from a forecasting standpoint, so obviously continue to monitor the forecast! You can see on the hurricane “spaghetti plots” how Hermine stops moving south of the region

Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend, however the weather turns out to be.

Australian PFLAG Campaign Warns Voters of $160 Million Cost of Public Vote on Marriage Equality: WATCH

Australian PFLAG Campaign Warns Voters of $160 Million Cost of Public Vote on Marriage Equality: WATCH

A new campaign from PFLAG Australia urges Australians to push lawmakers for a free vote on marriage equality in parliament and reject a plebiscite backed by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull because of its exorbitant cost.

Malcolm Turnbull marriage plebisciteIn a new ad, the group argues that $160 million, which is what the plebiscite is expected to cost, could be better spent on other things like teachers, nurses, and education.

The ad directs people to the makeitlaw.com.au webform which allows concerned citizens to write their federal representatives. So far 12,000 individuals have sent over 150,000 emails through makeitlaw.com.au, according to the group.

Said PFLAG spokesperson, Sharyn Faulkner:

“This week we were encouraged by the Nick Xenophon Team coming out firmly against a plebiscite but we still need to get Labor on board. The Government is spruiking a plebiscite strongly but we intend to be just as strong in rejecting it. We won’t rest until the Senate vetoes a plebiscite and parliament gets back on track to a free vote. I thank all those Australians who have taken the time to write to their federal members and I urge them to ask their friends and family members to write too.”

A first ad from the group, which showed Turnbull getting married to his plebiscite, will be shown on Sky TV from this weekend onwards.

Watch it below:
