Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBT-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.

1) The Intervention, out actress Clea DuVall’s directorial debut, is now playing in theaters. The film, which premiered at Sundance and screened at Outfest Los Angeles, focuses on four couples going away for a weekend in the country, three of which are trying to help save the fourth’s marriage. DuVall also stars as the film’s main character with Natasha Lyonne as her partner – a nod to their roles in classic film, But I’m A Cheerleader.

2) Ellen Page and Kate Mara will be playing romantic opposites in Mercy, a new movie from Killer Films, the production company that brought us Carol and Kill Your Darlings. The film is about a Romeo & Juliet-esque romance between Page’s Lucy, whose father is on death row, and Mara’s character, whose family is on the opposite side of the case. Shooting for Mercy will begin this September. In other film casting news, Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez will be playing a lesbian character in the upcoming sci-fi film Annihilation. Rodriguez describes the character of Anya as “a paramedic from Chicago who happens to be a lesbian and an ex-addict going into the Shimmer [an entity that is trying to end the world] to be the hero that she’s kinda always wanted to be.”

3) The pilot for Transparent creator Jill Soloway’s new show I Love Dick is now up on Amazon. The show focuses on the ailing marriage between Chris, a struggling filmmaker, and her husband Sylvestre when a new friend comes into town. Out actress Roberta Colindrez plays Devon, Chris and Sylvestre’s neighbor, who is definitely interested in Chris, but is waiting for her marriage to dissolve before making her move. Viewers can vote now for which pilots they’d like Amazon to turn into full series.

4) Freeform will be developing out filmmaker Patrick Sean Smith’s new show, Santa Monica Shores. Smith formerly created the GLAAD Media Award-nominated series Greek for the network. Logo has released the first trailer for their new dating series, Finding Prince Charming, which will premiere September 8. Starz’ original series Survivor’s Remorse has been renewed for a fourth season, and the trailer for the newest season of Gaycation is out now.

5) This weekend, out musician Frank Ocean released, in effect, two albums – Blonde, his highly anticipated follow-up to Channel Orange, and Endless, a visual album meant to accompany that. Both can be listened to and viewed on Apple Music.

6) In other music news, the band Prinze George released a music video for their single, ‘Wait Up’, that shows the emotional journey of a gay couple by starting with one moment – a kiss – and going backwards from there. Additionally, singer Logan Lynn also debuted a music video for his single, “Go Where You Want To Be Loved,” a song that celebrates queerness, the proceeds of which go towards the survivors of the Pulse shooting. Watch the video here.

7) The 29th annual Lambda Literary Awards opened up for submissions this week. These awards strive to celebrate complex, well developed LGBTQ narratives and honor the work of past queer individuals in the literary field. They accept a wide range of material, such as literary fiction, poetry, speculative fiction, graphic novels, and memoirs. The full rules and guidelines for submission can be found here.

Is One Hunk Enough To Start A #HunksForHillary Movement? Time Will Tell.

Is One Hunk Enough To Start A #HunksForHillary Movement? Time Will Tell.

hunksforhillary

We’re all familiar with Twinks4Trump, the brilliant satirical twitter account. And you might’ve heard of the other Twinks4Trump, the sincerely pro-Trump photo series to which the only logical response is derisive laughter.

But what of the Hunks for Hillary? Can that be a thing? Sure, why the hell not.

That’s the hope of an attractive man named Eric Turner, recently photographed with some “Hunks for Hillary” body art by Miami-based (of course) photographer Abel Cruz.

“Join me and let’s start a movement!” he wrote. “Are you for Hillary Clinton too? Take a pic and show your support. Don’t forget to # it #HunksForHillary.”

A supplementary comment reads, “I acknowledge that many people who I know, and many people who will see this, will vote for Donald trump. And many of them have valid reasons for doing so.” Ah, no, a desire to see the world burn is not exactly a valid reason for voting.

So far, there’ve been no takers — searching for “Hunks for Hillary” returns a couple people wishing that such a thing existed without actually starting it themselves, and also a joking tweet from a year ago.

This cannot be allowed to stand. Surely there are other political torsos out there! Isn’t it about time we heard from hot bodies with rippling pecs and abs? Don’t they deserve a voice too?

Gus Kenworthy Steve Harvey

Skier Gus Kenworthy made his Celebrity Family Feud appearance a teachable moment for host Steve Harvey and viewers, educating them about LGBTQ youth who are disowned by their families after they come out.

Said Kenworthy to Harvey when asked about the charity for which he was playing:

“When I came out as gay to my family, they were completely loving and supportive, but unfortunately, that’s not a reality for a lot of LGBT youth, and so when they tell their parents a lot of kids end up on the streets and so the Happy Hippie Foundation is for LGBT at-risk youth.”

“Really?”, asked Steve Harvey. “I guess I don’t get that part, you know. If it’s my kid, it’s my kid. I don’t know how I would stop loving my kid, man. That ain’t gettin ready to happen.”

The Happy Hippie Foundation was founded by Kenworthy’s friend Miley Cyrus.

Watch Beyoncé’s Show-Stealing VMAs ‘Lemonade’ Medley

Watch Beyoncé’s Show-Stealing VMAs ‘Lemonade’ Medley

As far as VMAs performances go, they don’t get much better than Beyonce’s 15-minute medley inspired by the stunning visual album “Lemonade”.

The performance brought soul and symbolism.

Writes Tre’vell Anderson:

After a mini-concert that still has all of social media talking, Beyoncé and her dancers formed a symbol on stage. While some say it was a tribute to the late Prince, others cite it as the gender symbol for female. Either way, Beyoncé can do no wrong.

It also saw Beyoncé pass Madonna as the most decorated VMA artist ever:

Before Sunday night (Aug. 28), Beyonce had 16 Moonmen and Madonna had 20. But Beyonce’s six awards put her over the top.

And aside from Beyoncé, the show was pretty sad. TIME writes:

Prior to Beyoncé’s appearance, deep into the broadcast, the show had been uncharacteristically muddled. Sure, the VMAs, MTV’s sassy answer to the Grammys, have long forged iconography out of an absolute refusal to set limits; that’s how we ended up with moments from Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” to Lady Gaga’s meat dress. But this year’s broadcast’s particular messiness seemed less like the raw material for potential greatness and more like a show put on by a network that has lost its touch both for spectacle and for simple appeal.

Deep in Alum Chine, Bournemouth

A chine is a steep dry river valley and Alum Chine is the largest of four Chines within Bournemouth and is a natural feature that bridges the urban environment of the town and the bustling beach below.

It offers shaded paths and rain forest type trees with their high canopies and provides a romantic setting for photographic moments, such as these.
