Anti-Gay Pastor Who Said Orlando Victims ‘Got What They Deserved’ Arrested for Child Molestation

Anti-Gay Pastor Who Said Orlando Victims ‘Got What They Deserved’ Arrested for Child Molestation

PastorBookingPhoto640x480

A Georgia pastor who said that the victims of the Orlando massacre ‘got what they deserved’ has been arrested for child molestation of a young male who attended his church.

Ken Adkins, 56, also fought against expanding non-discrimantion protections to LGBT people in Jacksonville, Florida.

Jacksonville.com reports:

One of the two charges against the 56-year-old is aggravated child molestation, said Stacy Carson, special agent in charge of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Kingsland office.

District Attorney Jackie Johnson asked the GBI on Aug. 12 to assist the Brunswick Police Department in an investigation of an accusation of child molestation against Adkins, Carson said. The investigation focused on suspected molestation in several locations in the Brunswick area including at Adkins’ church, a vehicle and a victim’s home, Carson said. The investigation is ongoing.

Lawyer Kevin Gough told the Times-Union he is representing Adkins and believes the accusations are said to have occurred in 2010. He said Adkins had willingly turned himself in.

The victim was reportedly male and one of Askins’ parishioners:

[Adkins’] wife, Charlotte Stormy Adkins, said she and the congregation support Adkins and are disappointed in the rush to judgment against him. She is confident he will be cleared of all charges but shares her husband’s concern for the young man who came forward with the allegations. She said he is a part of the church ministry and has been mentored by the couple. She also said while her husband takes leave, she will be interim pastor.

In the wake of the Orlando massacre, Adkins tweeted, “been through so much with these Jacksonville homosexuals that I don’t see none of them as victims. I see them as getting what they deserve.”

He later attempted to walk back that remark, saying that the tweet was “strictly meant for the Jacksonville group that has made my life a living hell,” again referencing his opposition to Jacksonville’s nondiscrimination ordinance.

As reporter Russell Colburn points out, Adkins has tweeted out other anti-gay remarks in recent months.

Britney Spears Reaches For The Hits On ‘Carpool Karaoke’

Just in time for the release of her ninth studio album Glory, which dropped at approximately 12:01 a.m. this morning, Britney Spears rode shotgun with James Corden for The Late Late Show’s “Carpool Karaoke” segment.

The pair revisited some of Britney Jean’s greatest hits, including “Oops! I Did It Again” (which apparently, according to Spears, has absolutely no meaning, it’s “just a song”), “Toxic,” “Womanizer,” and her flagship hit “Baby, One More Time.”

Corden sang. Spears, per usual, lip synced.

Screen Shot 2016-08-26 at 9.21.50 AM

Get ready for your crush on Brian Sims to go from “hey he’s pretty great” to “take me now.” Your favorite bearded Pennsylvania representative just uploaded a video to Facebook of himself singing along to Jodi Benson as Ariel in The Little Mermaid.

It is lovely and cute and perfect, and hopefully will inspire a series. What would you like to see him sing next? (Personally, we’re torn between “Colors of the Wind” from Pocahontas and “I’ll Make a Man out of You” from Mulan.)

And more broadly, it would be awesome if this got more politicians into the lipdub game — whether they want to or not. Donald Trump would never do anything like this, but we’d love to see someone synchronize clips of him to “Be Prepared” from The Lion King.

In his description, Brian writes, “I hope you’re having as fun of an afternoon as I am! #GoinCampin…with Ariel!” Yes, sir, never were truer words spoken. You certainly are indeed camping.

Maine Governor Paul LePage Calls State Lawmaker a ‘C**ksucker’ in Voicemail Claiming He’s Not Racist: LISTEN

Maine Governor Paul LePage Calls State Lawmaker a ‘C**ksucker’ in Voicemail Claiming He’s Not Racist: LISTEN

Paul LePage

Maine Governor Paul LePage left a gay slur-laden voicemail for Democratic Rep. Drew Gattine challenging the lawmaker for calling him a racist. He later told reporters he’d shoot Gattine “right between his eyes” in a duel.

Said LePage in the voice message:

“Mr. Gattine, this is Gov. Paul Richard LePage,” a recording of the governor’s phone message says. “I would like to talk to you about your comments about my being a racist, you c**ksucker. I want to talk to you. I want you to prove that I’m a racist. I’ve spent my life helping black people and you little son-of-a-bitch, socialist c**ksucker. You … I need you to, just friggin. I want you to record this and make it public because I am after you. Thank you.”

Listen:

Gattine had been critical of remarks made by LePage about the state’s heroin epidemic. LePage had said that most of the drug dealers in the state were Black or Hispanic.

The Portland Press Herald:

“What I said to the television reporter today is that the kind of racially charged comments the governor made are not at all helpful in solving what the real problem is,” Gattine said. “And that is, we have a crisis in the state of Maine of people overdosing on heroin and prescription drugs and we are not doing enough with respect to treatment and prevention.”

LePage also invited reporters to his office where he said he’d like to engage in a gun duel with Gattine, the Portland Press Herald reports:

“When a snot-nosed little guy from Westbrook calls me a racist, now I’d like him to come up here because, tell you right now, I wish it were 1825. And we would have a duel, that’s how angry I am, and I would not put my gun in the air, I guarantee you, I would not be (Alexander) Hamilton. I would point it right between his eyes, because he is a snot-nosed little runt and he has not done a damn thing since he’s been in this Legislature to help move the state forward.”

LePage later released a written statement about the voicemail:

“When someone calls me a racist, I take it very seriously. I didn’t know Drew Gattine from a hole in the wall until yesterday. It made me enormously angry when a TV reporter asked me for my reaction about Gattine calling me a racist. It is the absolute worst, most vile thing you can call a person. So I called Gattine and used the worst word I could think of. I apologize for that to the people of Maine, but I make no apology for trying to end the drug epidemic that is ravaging our state. Legislators like Gattine would rather be politically correct and protect ruthless drug dealers than work with me to stop this crisis that is killing five Mainers a week.”

“When I said I was going after Gattine, I meant I would do everything I could to see that he and his agenda is defeated politically. I am a history buff, and I referenced how political opponents used to call each other out in the 1820s-including Andrew Jackson, the father of the Democratic Party. Obviously, it is illegal today; it was simply a metaphor and I meant no physical harm to Gattine. But I am calling him out to stop giving inflammatory sound bites and get to work to end this crisis that is killing Mainers, destroying families and creating drug-addicted babies, all so the drug dealers Gattine is protecting can make a profit.”

America’s Drag Queens Got Talent On the Premiere of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 2’ [RECAP]

America’s Drag Queens Got Talent On the Premiere of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 2’ [RECAP]

Adore on RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 2

Oooh, gurl, we are BACK in a big way. RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 2 has got me feeling all kinds of ways. The first iteration of All Stars felt like it was missing some key queens in the mix, and the team twist hurt a lot more than it helped the season’s momentum.

HOW-EV-ER, DARLING, All Stars 2 is packed with so many fan-favorite faces (and vile villains) that I’m not even sure they can do an All Stars 3 after this. Last night’s Ruper-sized premiere made so many smart choices, it almost felt like fan-fiction. I am so here for this.

Let’s hash out all the SPOILER-Y details, below, just in case someone is saving this on their DVR (and has zero gay friends on Facebook wigging out about it).

Raven Symone guest judge on RuPaul's Drag Race Season 2

Obviously the cast is amazing, and we’ll get to them in our rankings below. But, let’s talk about some other things this show is doing right already. First off, they started with the reading challenge, and the library was open, closed and burned to the ground. Alaska won the challenge with an appropriately twisted performance. Her best read was on Adore: “These other girls are going to say you have terrible makeup skills, you have no fashion sense and you’re dumb as a rock. But they’re wrong. You don’t have terrible makeup skills!” It was her hilariously clumsy Laganja-inspired death drop that really capped it off and earned the win. BUT! The real read of the night, maybe of the century, came courtesy of Katya. She laid into Roxxxy with such a pointed and perfect barb that it may have even gone a little too far: “I think about you all the time. Especially in the morning. At the bus stop.” I MEAN … I think I might have somehow death-dropped off my own couch from a sitting position just HEARING THAT, HENNY. All I know is I ended up on the floor.

Then, Drag Race did the smartest challenge they’ve done yet: A Talent Show. This is probably any drag fan’s number one complaint about this show. It hardly ever lets the girls do what they are truly best at. This was an opportunity for the queens to show us the kind of show they’d put on in the club. I feel like every season should start like this going forward.

Now let’s talk about those TWISTS. First, the ladies won’t be lip syncing for their lives, they will be lip syncing for their legacy, which in this case means $10,000 and the power to eliminate one of the bottom performers. In theory, this should lead to some high-octane lip sync performances, and a whole mess of drama backstage. Not sure if it will necessarily help us crown the most qualified winner, but damn it will make some good TV. That’s not even the final gay gasp-inducing twist of the night. When the eliminated queen went back to the workroom to grab her RuPaul statuette, there was a special message about the chance to COME BACK for Ru-venge. DRAMAAAAAAAAA!

Can we also talk about Raven Symoné serving full on Auntie Entity realness on the judging panel? Can we keep her and send Todrick Hall home, please?

Alright, alright, alright, let’s talk about our rankings. These are purely subjective, obviously, and I’m taking into account previous performances and my general gut feelings about who’s best, okrrrr?

Alaska on RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 2

1. Come through, Alaska. Anyone who’s caught one of Alaska’s caberet-style shows since her appearance on season five — and I’ve seen several — knows what a stellar performer she is. She’s perfected her look, honed her persona and knows exactly how to leverage her talents. She’s not a great singer from a Simon Cowell point of view, but she’s playing a character and slips in and out of her demonic growl and “Hiiiiiiiiiii!” squeal for a relentlessly entertaining performance every time. Even the few fleeting moments we saw of “The Gayest Thing You’ve Ever Seen” was enough to seal her spot in the Top 3. She’s the one to beat.

RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 2 Katya

2. If this show is about Rudemption, a win for Katya would feel the most justified. The season seven queen was sent home much too soon. She is the Joan of Arc of Drag Race. She is a martyr, MAMA. Not only is she one of the most beloved contestants, she’s also one of the most comedically gifted. She can do raunch, camp, physical comedy and still turn a phrase or craft a perfect one-liner. Plus, unlike so many other “comedy queens,” she can dance and give us glamour. Her “gymnastics” act was physically impressive, incorporated her signature humor (that Exorcist-esque spider walk made me guffaw) and felt like a natural extension of her Russian character, which I always love. That Russian routine could get real tired real quick, and I’m glad she knows how to use it sparingly.

RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 2 Alyssa Edwards

3. The third spot feels a bit like a wildcard at this point, but I’m going with my gut: Alyssa Edwards. During her talent show performance, she essentially gave us a complete one-woman show in the span of a few minutes. It had everything: splits, rap and even puppets (everybody loves puppets!). It reminded me more than a little of Sonja Morgan’s caburlesque routine, which just made me love it even more. Alyssa is almost superhumanly talented. She’s a great dancer, but everything else can be very hit or miss. She might be responsible for some of Drag Race’s most notable quotables, but rarely are they intentional. Her fashion choices vacillate wildly from sequin showgirl perfection to bizarre beaded nightmares. Alyssa has the talent to win this, but her real secret is she doesn’t know how to channel it purposefully.

4. Ugh, I hate to admit it, but I guess Roxxxy is my next pick for most likely winner. The judges love her for some reason. I just can’t get into it. Her weak justification for her villainous behavior in season five was that she was “playing mind games.” Gurl. Those weren’t mind games. You were just being mean. You were just a nasty, insecure person. That wasn’t a strategy! My personal distaste for Roxxxy’s personality aside, she did turn out a pretty stellar burlesque performance (though it wasn’t nearly as good as some of the others). Her T-Swift lip sync, however, was far superior and felt more appropriate for the song than Tati’s.

RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 2 Tatianna

5. Speaking of Tatianna, I think she may be this season’s dark horse. That’s definitely what this edit wants us to believe. When they announced her talent as “spoken word,” I audibly groaned, but it turned out to be just wink-wink enough to pull it off. Content aside — which was a bit predictable and not as subversive as she thought it was — what she did give us was PRECISION. Call it serving hands, call it pop-and-lockography, call it whatever you’d like. She can work that body-ody-ody.

RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 2 Detox

6. Look, I want Detox to never go home, if only for the reaction GIFs it will provide. She wisely knew how to compensate for her less than stellar singing voice with a whole lot of vocal effects and a little, I don’t know what to call it, neon bukkake show? Unlike the glow paint, I just don’t think Detox is that bright. In this crowded field, I think she’s going to hit a ceiling.

7. I wasn’t counting on dropping Adore so far down the list, but I’m already tired of her “I don’t belong here!” story arc. We get it. I loved Adore during her season. I love everything she does now. She’s got a powerhouse voice, and she knows who she is. There are few reality cliches that bore me faster than the “I don’t want to be here” girl. I don’t need Ru or Michelle to do their own “WE WERE ALL ROOTING FOR YOU!” speech, and I feel like that’s where this is heading.

8. Oh, no, Phi Phi. Unlike Roxxxy, I am buying Phi’s regret. I do think she is sincerely sorry for how she acted on camera and really wants to show us how she’s grown. Why she decided to sing is beyond me. I don’t even think the problem was that she chose to sing a capella. The problem was that she chose to sing at all. It was cringe-worthy. Since her appearance on the show, I’ve been obsessed with Phi’s Instagram, and I wish she took this opportunity to show us some really innovative looks.

9. Another poor choice this week? Ginger Minj’s unnecessarily earnest soft rock ballad. This is not RuPaul’s Wynonna Judd Race. Save it for the Gainesville LGBTQ Center fundraiser dinner, gurl.

10. Coco Montrese sent her damn self home. The whole point of the challenge was to do the most quintessentially you thing you do. This was exactly the wrong time to try something different. Get out there and give us “If,” give us “Together Again,” give us “All For You,” give us goddamn “Rhythm Nation.” Give us a medley! If this is what you’re doing at your club shows, count me out forever.

The party don’t stop next week when we dive muff-first in Snatch Game.

How would you rank the queens? Tell us in the comments.

Pedro Almodóvar Says His Version of ‘Brokeback Mountain’ Would Have Had More Gay Sex – LISTEN

pedro almodovar brokeback

Famous gay director Pedro Almodóvar says that if he had directed the film adaptation of Annie Proulx’s short story Brokeback Mountain his film would have had a lot more gay sex than Ang Lee’s.

pedro almodovarAlmodóvar was originally attached to the project before Lee came on board. In an interview with The Empire Film Podcast, Almodóvar was asked how his version of Brokeback would have differed from Lee’s. He explained immediately: “More sex, more sex.”

He explained,

“And it’s not gratuitous. The Annie Proulx story is about a physical relation, an animal relation, so sex is necessary because it is the body of the story. I always had the image–I mean, these two guys start making love to each other like the animals that they were taking care of. Against the cold…yes, a way to survive in the mountains.”

Almodóvar added,

“In the end they discovered it was something else and they were surprised. It was like a big accident. The [physical] part. It is about that. “

Almodóvar says he loves the movie that Ang Lee created and the performances by Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Leader. In the end, he doesn’t think that his version of Brokeback could have been made in the US: “It seems to me I could do that in Europe, but not in the United States.”

You can listen to Almodóvar’s interview, which begins at the 41:41 mark and turns to Brokeback at 54:20, below.

Three Ways to Respect Non-Binary Students In the Classroom

Three Ways to Respect Non-Binary Students In the Classroom

Post submitted by Charles Girard, HRC Welcoming Schools Project Coordinator

As transgender people gain more visibility across the country, people around the country are learning more about the plight of transgender youth. However, there’s a subset of transgender people that is not always included in the conversation: Students who identify as non-binary.

“Non-binary” refers to a person who does not identify as strictly male or female. The term may be used to describe people who:

  • Experience different gender identities.

There are many ways to welcome non-binary students in the classroom, but the most important way is to respect each student’s gender identity. To help, here are some tips so you can start off the school year in the best way possible.

  1. Using the correct name

Students of all genders and backgrounds go by names other than those on legal documents for a number of reasons…

  • Emily prefers “Em”
  • Dialonte likes “Lonte”
  • John always goes by his middle name.

Non-binary students may also have names they prefer that differ from the name on your class list. While a trans student’s chosen name may just seem comparable to a nickname, a chosen name goes much deeper. For many trans people, chosen names may reduce anxiety of a hyper-gendered given name or may feel more accurate to their sense of self. It is critical to respect these names, as they help the student feel affirmed, welcomed, and ready to be a part of a classroom community.

Unfortunately, many schools rely heavily on legal documents that may not reflect the name that you and your student know them to be. However, a court-ordered name or gender change is not necessary for you to use a student’s chosen name regardless of official records.

Work with your school’s administration to make sure that your students feel as comfortable as possible. Ask that substitutes always read last names out loud to take attendance, print out an unofficial roster that uses the names that your students go by, or even assign a non-binary student the task of taking attendance.

2. Respect ALL pronouns

“They” is a common gender-neutral pronoun often utilized by non-binary individuals who feel uncomfortable being called “he” or “she.” While it may seem daunting to use “they” to refer to one person, it is incredibly important that you respect your student’s wishes. Some non-binary students may request that you change pronouns over time. Some may use other gender-neutral pronouns. Consider asking each student their pronouns on the first day of school which will take the pressure off of transgender students to specify their pronouns when other students may not feel the need. Allowing students to explore and celebrate their identities is essential to creating a classroom culture of respect.

If you do use the  incorrect pronoun, apologize, correct yourself, and move on.

3. Listen

You can not guess a student’s identity by their appearance. The only way that you can know a student’s identity is if they tell you.

Relationships are about learning from each other, and when working with LGBTQ students, this is especially true. According to HRC Foundation’s groundbreaking survey of LGBTQ youth, students who are out at school are more likely to report being happy than those who are not out at school. Your presence as a caring adult could make more of a difference for your students than you realize.

Remember that no two non-binary students are alike. Ask your students what they need to be successful academically and socially. Set up times to check back in throughout the year as your student’s needs may change throughout the year.
