After Dark Matter last year’s sold out performance that was supported by the Arts Council of England, Vertebra returns to Etcetera Theatre with Oscar a brand new puppetry performance that explores queer identity through visual imagery and devised texts inspired by Oscar Wilde’s life and work.

In Oscar, 22-23 August at the Etcetera Theatre at 6.30pm, they use a mixture of puppetry styles, garbage film and physical theatre to bring to life contemporary stories of gender questioning.

They aim to engage young adults in quest of their personal identity, sexuality and finding ways of self-acceptance. This puppetry performance aims to raise awareness of LGBTQ issues among young people and adult audience within communities.

This is a work in progress show that has been already part of the Incubate Research and Development Laboratory of the Little Angel Theatre.

“This is a company to watch as they grow, with a gift for creating unusual and inventive stories,” Laura Kressly.

Reviews for their previous show Dark Matter:

“The fantastical portrayals of dementia are visually arresting. Sharp physical theatre and compelling puppetry,” Everything Theatre.

“The delight of Dark Matter is that it harnesses everything puppetry has to offer,” A Younger Theatre.

SF Gay Bar Employee Brutally Assaulted in Castro Attack

SF Gay Bar Employee Brutally Assaulted in Castro Attack

Tommy Castellani

Tommy Castellani, an employee at the San Francisco Castro bar Badlands, was attacked on Wednesday night while leaving karaoke night at another popular Castro bar, The Cafe, according to Hoodline.

Said Castellani to the publication:

“We are not sure why I was attacked…One of the ideas is that it might be revenge from someone who I may have had to ask to leave [Badlands] previously. Or it could be a random gay bashing. The only facts are it was brutal and nothing was stolen from me. I am currently trying to piece together info.”

A GoFundMe page was set up by Castellani’s sister and gets some of the details of the incident incorrect (according to Castellani), reports that he had to “have emergency surgery to basically re-attach his fractured jaw to his skull.”

Added Castellani: “You can bash my face but you will not get my spirit, you can not take the love that has been given to me from all of you.I am unafraid I only feel blessings. I will heal and I will still be beautiful. You have done nothing but brought bad karma and the promise of a long stay in hell. Your hatred and evil have only wrapped me in so much love from all around me, you have only increased my spiritual wealth.”

Univision Buys Gawker Media for $135 Million

Univision Buys Gawker Media for $135 Million

Nick Denton

Univision has reportedly won the auction for Gawker Media and will pay $135 for the bankrupt network of sites, according to Recode:

Ziff Davis and Univision were the only two bidders for Gawker, which filed for bankruptcy after Hulk Hogan and Peter Thiel won a $140 million judgment in a privacy case. Ziff Davis had originally offered $90 million for Gawker Media.

Here’s a statement from Gawker Media owner Nick Denton (above): “Gawker Media Group has agreed this evening to sell our business and popular brands to Univision, one of America’s largest media companies that is rapidly assembling the leading digital media group for millennial and multicultural audiences. I am pleased that our employees are protected and will continue their work under new ownership — disentangled from the legal campaign against the company. We could not have picked an acquirer more devoted to vibrant journalism.”

Gawker was forced into bankruptcy after losing a lawsuit brought by Hulk Hogan over a sex tape Gawker had published on its site. The suit was later revealed to have been bankrolled by gay Paypal billionaire Peter Thiel, who was angry that Gawker had outed him.

Ellen DeGeneres on Her Usain Bolt Meme: Racist ‘is the Furthest Thing from Who I Am’

Ellen DeGeneres has responded to accusations that a meme she Photoshopped of Jamaican runner Usain Bolt is racist. Ellen’s meme shows her riding on the Olympic runner’s back. Many saw this when they looked at the image.

Said Ellen in a later tweet: “I am highly aware of the racism that exists in our country. It is the furthest thing from who I am.”

This is how I’m running errands from now on. #Rio2016 pic.twitter.com/gYPtG9T1ao

Here are a few examples of what others have done with it:

this is literally the culmination of this man’s entire life and Usain is probably thinking about dinner reservations pic.twitter.com/shp9NBnYeF

Many took issue with Ellen’s version:

@TheEllenShow You thought it’d be funny to post a pic of yourself riding on the back of a Black man? Nope. Delete this racist garbage.

— Mike (@MikeAllen_47) August 15, 2016

@TheEllenShow @usainbolt So riding on his back like a mule, a horse as some form of property is fun to you…

Ok.

@SonicGamingChan @TheEllenShow I find the image of a white woman riding on a black man’s back triggering. Some don’t, I do & that’s life

— Tony Sparks (@WarWizard) August 16, 2016

Ellen responded:

I am highly aware of the racism that exists in our country. It is the furthest thing from who I am.

It’s 1966. Legendary soap opera ‘Sellotape Sisters’ (the pretensions of ‘Downton,’ the production values of ‘Crossroads’) has been cancelled.
With no ideas left for the last, live episode, the writers raid the actors’ private lives for storylines. In shock and denial, and with the final broadcast looming and an expected twenty-two million viewers tuning in, will the cast stick to the script?
Find out as ‘Noises Off’ meets ‘The Killing of Sister George’ (via ‘Acorn Antiques’) in this outrageous, farcical and ultimately heartfelt new play from former ‘Coronation Street’ storyliner Lee Mattinson, brought to you by comedy specialists Signal Theatre.
‘…funny, earthy and sprinkled with a little dose of magic.’ The Stage on Signal’s earlier work
