Tom Daley won the bronze medal in synchronized diving (China won the gold, Team USA took the silver) in the men’s 10-meter synchronized platform diving with teammate Daniel Goodfellow. It was a nail-biter fight for the bronze, and at the end of the fourth out of six dives, Daley and Goodfellow led Maksym Dolgov and Oleksandr Gorshkovozov, of Ukraine by only 0.14 points.

But the fifth dive separated them: the British duo got the second-best score in that round, but Team Ukraine wasn’t so lucky.

Married couple Helen and Kate Richardson-Walsh helped Team Great Britain get one step closer to the gold medal (they got bronze in London 2012) as they defeated India 3-0 and moved into first place in Pool B.

Brazilian rugby player Isadora Cerullo helped her team defeat Japan (33-5) to claim the ninth-place in the tournament. Then, after the medal ceremony (gold for Australia, silver for New Zealand and bronze for Canada) Marjorie Enya, her long-time girlfriend and a Rio 2016 volunteer, gave her a reward even better than gold: she grabbed the microphone and proposed to Cerullo.

She said ‘yes’ and they kissed while her teammates held heart-shaped balloons and letters that spelled out “sim” (“I do”). “As soon as I knew she was in the squad I thought I have to make this special,” Enya later told BBC sports, “she is the love of my life.”

In non-LGBT news, host Brazil had a lot to celebrate: Rafaela Silva won the country’s first gold medal of the Olympics in the women’s 57kg (125.5 lbs) judo competition, defeating Sumiya Dorjsuren of Mongolia, the world’s No. 1 ranked fighter in the weight class.

Silva grew up in the Cidade de Deus favela, one of Rio’s most dangerous neighborhoods, made famous by the 2002 film City of God  (which was directed by Fernando Meirelles, one of the three creative directors for the Rio 2016 opening ceremony.)

She almost gave up the sport after her elimination from the London Games in 2012, when she suffered vicious racist attacks on social media.

Speaking to Brazilian news channel Sportv, Silva couldn’t even speak for a few seconds, trying to fight off her tears: “They said judo wasn’t for me, and that I was a shame to my family.”

A second Olympian — another boxer —  was arrested by Brazilian police on suspicion of attempting to sexually assault a maid in the Rio de Janeiro Olympic village. She alleged that Jonas Junius (Namibian’s flag-bearer in the opening ceremony) grabbed her and tried to kiss her. She also accused him of offering her money to have sex, the BBC reported.

In the men’s gymnastics final, Japan won gold, the Russian Federation took the silver, and a visibly devastated China won the bronze.

Brazil finished sixth, but both athletes and fans had reason to cheer: it was the team’s best result ever. Besides, according to BuzzFeed, they are a team so hot it’s problematic, so how can you not be happy about that?

And speaking of hot men, Towleroad was there to check things out for you. We know it’s a tough life, but somebody has got to do it.

Marco Rubio Defends Headlining Anti-LGBT Event on 2 Month Anniversary of Orlando Shooting: VIDEO

Marco Rubio orlando

Marco Rubio has defended his decision to attend a conference in Orlando organized by a Christian activist who believes homosexuality will lead to the total destruction of America.

Sadly, @marcorubio is headlining this anti-LGBT event w/ Liberty Counsel’s Mat Staver & Wallbuilders’ David Barton. t.co/kZm315vNn6

Rediscovering God in America, which takes place August 11-12th, on the two month anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub massacre, is hosted by the Florida Renewal Project, an affiliate of conservative activist David Lane’s American Renewal Project. Lane has been linked to anti-gay hate group the American Family Association.

Said Rubio to the Tampa Bay Times:

“The event I will be speaking at in Orlando is a gathering of local pastors and faith leaders. Leave it to the media and liberal activists to label a gathering of faith leaders as an anti-LGBT event. It is nothing of the sort. It is a celebration of faith.”

Mat Staver David BartonRight Wing Watch reports that at the first Rediscovering God in America event back in 2011, Mike Huckabee called on participants to become “spiritual warriors” in the fight against marriage equality.

Slated to take part are a number of extreme anti-gay activists including Mat Staver and David Barton (above right).

Staver has said that memorials following the Orlando massacre had become a “homosexual love fest.” As well as representing serial monogamist Kim Davis, he has praised moves in Russia, India, Malawi and Nigeria to outlaw homosexuality. Meanwhile, Barton has complained that same-sex marriage will lead to the legalization of pedophilia.

@marcorubio You need to withdraw from “Rediscovering God In America” event, or don’t dare invoke #pulse shooting to help your career.

Rubio, who recently cited the Orlando massacre as a reason he was changing his mind and running for re-election to the Senate, last week attacked “the media and liberal activists” for labeling “a gathering of faith leaders as an anti-LGBT event.”

Despite the fear mongering and hatred displayed by conference delegates, in denying the true spirit of Rediscovering God in America, Rubio has said that the debate on same-sex marriage should be “respectful of the views and the dignity of those on both sides.”

Watch Rubio claim that homosexuality is a “real and present danger” to Christianity below.

During #SouthernStories tour of Texas GLAAD releases latest guidebook for reporting on Texas LGBT community

During #SouthernStories tour of Texas GLAAD releases latest guidebook for reporting on Texas LGBT community

GLAAD

Today, GLAAD released the latest in the Southern Stories media resource guides, “Southern Stories: A Guide for Reporting on LGBT people in Texas.” The guidebook will serve as a resource for journalists and media outlets reporting on the LGBT community and surrounding issues in the state of Texas.

The guidebook was created following GLAAD’s Accelerating Acceptance report which showed that 61 percent of American southerners show discomfort toward the LGBT community.

The resource release today provides journalists and media outlets with both triumphant and tragic story leads, a glossary of terms and definitions frequently used in reporting, offensive terms to avoid, and common pitfalls. It also includes a timeline outlining the history of LGBT issues in Texas.

“The LGBT community in Texas is making sure and steady progress, but the work to achieve full equality and acceptance if far from done. The defeat of the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance is clear evidence of that,” said Ross Murray, GLAAD Director of Programs, U.S. South. “This media guide will help journalists fairly and accurately report on LGBT stories to combat the misinformation and fearmongering that we’ve seen in the past year.”

The guide is a part of GLAAD’s Southern Stories initiative, which aims to amplify the voices of and build acceptance for LGBT people and allies in southern states. This is done by telling the stories of LGBT people from diverse backgrounds. Additionally, the guide strives to debunk the myths surrounding various pieces of anti-LGBT legislation and emphasizes the effects nondiscrimination ordinances have had in the lives of LGBT southerners.

The guide was developed in collaboration with Equality Texas, HoustonLGBTHistory.org and LULAC Council 4871. GLAAD will continue to work with the media to ensure positive portrayal of the LGBT community in Texas in an effort to build understanding and accelerate acceptance.

This week, GLAAD is traveling in Texas as a part of the second annual Southern Stories Summer Tour. As a part of the tour, GLAAD will show a short preview of its upcoming mini-documentary on LGBT people in Texas, “GLAAD Presents: State of Change — Texas” at the Montrose Center in Houston, the Youth Pride Home in Edinburg and the AquÍ Estamos Conference in McAllen. Visit the links provided to learn more about and RSVP to the events.

Earlier this summer, GLAAD also visited Florida, Alabama and Mississippi to meet with LGBT advocates and work to accelerate acceptance in their communities. To learn more about the Southern Stories initiative and Summer Tours, click here
