Uganda Pride Canceled Following Threat from Government Minister and Vicious Police Raid

Uganda Pride Canceled Following Threat from Government Minister and Vicious Police Raid

Uganda’s annual pride celebration slated for this weekend has been abruptly called off by organizers following threats from a government minister.

Advocates say Ethics Minister Simon Lokodo threatened to mobilize a mob to disrupt the pride march that was scheduled for Saturday. Pride gatherings in previous years had been held without incident.

A brutal police raid on a pride event on Thursday saw the arrest of scores of participants and attendees at the club Venom in the capital, Kampala. Several well known activists, including Frank Mugisha and Pepe Onziema, were arrested. They were all eventually released.

The raid was carried out shortly after a tribute to the 49 victims of the recent deadly rampage in Orlando. HRC and other partners sponsored Uganda Pride’s opening reception. HRC is monitoring the situation closely and working with partners in Uganda to help in any way that we can.

“It is deeply disturbing that Uganda’s Pride celebration had to be canceled after threats from public officials,” said Ty Cobb, Director, HRC Global. ”We stand in solidarity with the Ugandan LGBTQ community as they continue their work to make Uganda a country that is welcoming to all.”

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, in office since 1986, signed the country’s infamous Anti-Homosexuality Bill in February 2014. Though the Constitutional Court subsequently invalidated it in August that year, the law created a violent backlash against the LGBTQ community that persists to this day.

Ahead of Ethics Hearing, HRC Reveals #NoMoore Billboard in Montgomery

Ahead of Ethics Hearing, HRC Reveals #NoMoore Billboard in Montgomery

HRC Alabama revealed a new billboard off I-85 in Montgomery calling out disgraced, notoriously anti-LGBTQ Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore. The billboard, which reads“#NoMoore: Dismiss Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore” goes up as Moore, suspended from the bench in May for his consistent defiance of pro-marriage equality federal rulings in the state, is set to be questioned by judicial prosecutors during a hearing Monday on ethics charges.

Following Moore’s ethics hearing with the Court of the Judiciary, HRC Alabama will hold a press conference on the steps of the Alabama Supreme Court.

In 2014, HRC launched Project One America, an initiative geared towards advancing social, institutional and legal equality in Alabama, Mississippi and Arkansas. HRC Alabama continues to work to advance equality for LGBTQ Alabamians who have no state level protections in housing, workplace, or public accommodations. Through HRC Alabama, we are working toward a future of fairness every day — changing hearts, minds and laws toward achieving full equality.

“Careful What You Wish For,” “The Lobster,” “Holding The Man,” & More!

“Careful What You Wish For,” “The Lobster,” “Holding The Man,” & More!

4745

These are strange days indeed, and our home entertainment highlights offer a bit of respite… and different sort of weirdness.

Colin Farrell will turn into a crustacean unless he finds a lover in off-kilter fantasy-dramedy The Lobster, while the fifteen-year relationship of an Aussie gay couple is charted in based-on-a-true-story Holding The Man (above). Finally, our favorite gay bait, Nick Jonas, lands a dangerous affair with a married woman in Careful What You Wish For.

Now for details and trailers!

Holding The Man

($24.99 DVD; Strand)

Based on the bestselling Aussie 1995 autobiography of Tim Conigrave, this romantic drama tracks the relationship between Tim and boyfriend John Caleo from the time they met in High School at age 16, when their parents’ discovery of this forbidden love proves prickly, to their career pursuits and flirtations with a growing, debauched gay scene in Sydney, to the discovery (SPOILER ALERT) that HIV has entered their lives. Playwright Tommy Murphy, who previously brought Conigrave’s memoir to live as a 2006 play, here again fleshes things out for director Neil Armfield, bringing to light this Aussie gay love story for the world at large. Acclaimed Oz actors Guy Pearce, Anthony LaPaglia, and Geoffrey Rush contribute their talents to this passion project. Also available on Netflix!

Careful What You Wish For

($12.99 DVD; ANME9)

Nick Jonas has plenty of opportunity to take off his shirt (and, possibly, more) as Doug, a super hot but mite dim teenager on summer holiday who falls in with a married woman, Lena. It turns out Lena is married to a an abusive alcoholic, and Doug – whose virginity she takes – may well be her means out, which leads to some dark turns indeed.

The Lobster

($24.99 Blu-ray, $19.98 DVD; Lionsgate)

In this peculiar and darkly humorous bit of dystopian sci-fi that could well fit into Spike Jonze’s roundhouse, single people have 45 days to find a mate, lest they be transformed into an animal. When Colin Farrell’s everyman character, David, is ditched by his wife for another man, the clock starts ticking – and he faces a future as a lobster unless he gets hitched again soon. Might Rachel Weisz prove a match? And what about the fates of fellow single men Ben Whishaw and John C. Reilly? The English language debut of Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos, this is not your everyday romcom! Extras include a featurette.

Add another set to the summer of male celeb pic leaks. Justin Bieber has been caught out – in more ways than one – yet again doing some naked swimming with a model friend, Sahara Ray.

The a series of photos of the pair skinny dipping in Hawaii were just published by the New York Daily News, with a black bar censoring Bieber’s business.

These shots are competing with the recently leaked Orlando Bloom nudes. The pair have bad blood and some people are suggesting that this was Bieber trying to steal the spotlight. Seems unlikely, but a fun bit of speculation nonetheless.

The latest batch of unedited photos have found their way to Twitter, because of course they have.

Britney Spears Brings All the Boys in ‘Make Me’ Music Video – WATCH

britney spears make me

Britney Spears has released the much-anticipated music video for her new single, “Make Me,” and there’s enough man candy to make you blush. And enough product placement to make you roll your eyes.

The first single off her upcoming album, Glory, “Make Me” has received rave reviews though it is unclear whether the video will receive the same acclaim as the single itself. One positive take-away from the video is that Spears’ goofy sense of humor (which she often displays on her Instagram) is definitely present here. Spears’ girl-next-door silliness was one of her attributes that made her so beloved by fans in the early days of her career.

Javier Muñoz, the new star of Hamilton, who has replaced the show’s creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, sat down with Stephen Colbert Thursday night on The Late Show.

Muñoz, who is openly gay and HIV positive, talked with Colbert about the genesis of Broadway’s biggest smash in years, what it was like performing for President and Mrs. Obama, why The New York Times calls him the ‘sexy Hamilton’, and what inspires him most about the show.

Muñoz also talked about how his battles with cancer and HIV have connected him to his work in Hamilton. “My drive is rooted in my own personal experience in my life. It’s the fear of dying,” Muñoz says, that propels him.
