John Oliver’s Endorsements for Election 2016: WATCH
Even though HBO’s Last Week Tonight isn’t quite finished with its four-week Summer break yet, host John Oliver couldn’t resist the temptation and posted a video on the show’s YouTube page regarding the presidential election. (Or, “as it’s now better known, Uncle Sam’s Rock-Bottom Yankee Doodle Suicide Pact 2016.”)
In the web-exclusive clip, Oliver mentioned some of the endorsements both candidates have racked up (Hillary Clinton with Gloria Steinem, Stevie Wonder and Oprah Winfrey; Donald Trump with Kid Rock and Stephen Baldwin) and decided to come up with a few of his own.
“Not for president, of course. Because of my accent, the only elected officials I can endorse are prime ministers, viceroys and magical railway controllers,” he said.
“But that doesn’t mean there aren’t things outside the realm of politics that I would like to formally endorse, starting with, obviously, animals wearing people clothes. I officially endorse you. You are charming and a wholesome delight, unlike people wearing animal clothes, which is generally a specific sex thing.”
Oliver also wholeheartedly endorses “interspecies friendships,” like a cute pair of “dog and goat BFFs” and an “unlikely pairing of Tilda Swinton and a human from Earth,” as well as the movie Pushing Tin, the1999 air traffic control film starring John Cusack and Billy Bob Thorton. Because “if you are looking for a snooze in the middle of an overcast Sunday afternoon,” he explained, “Pushing Tin will knock you the f**k out.”
Now on its third season, the show was just nominated for six Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Variety Talk Series.
Last Week Tonight returns on Sunday, July 24 on HBO.

HRC Joins Global Advocates at International AIDS Conference
This week, HRC joined over 18,000 HIV and AIDS activists, advocates and researchers in Durban, South Africa to kick off the 21st International AIDS Conference. Also known as AIDS 2016, the International AIDS Conference brings people together to share knowledge, promote activism and advance a clear agenda for HIV in a post 2015-framework.
The theme of this year’s conference is Access Equity Rights Now, which conference organizers says is a call to action to:
With an impressive number of pre-conferences, keynotes, workshops and research presentations, the conference is making a clear commitment to issues affecting key populations disproportionately impacted by HIV, including LGBTQ people.
For example, Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), the once-daily pill regimen that has been shown to be highly effective in keeping someone HIV-negative, was found to hold tremendous promise for young, Black gay and bisexual men when it is part of individualized counseling that addresses other barriers in their lives. Additionally, multiple sessions underscored the need for governments worldwide to do more to advance HIV prevention, treatment, and care efforts among transgender women, including those engaging in commercial sex work.
In global news, a report released by UNAIDS last Sunday showed that we are making tremendous progress toward the 90-90-90 target (90 percent of people living with HIV diagnosed, 90 percent of people diagnosed taking HIV treatment, 90 percent of those on treatment achieving viral suppression), but disparities exist and additional funding will be needed if we are to achieve an end to the epidemic by 2030.
HRC is committed to working with our allies, partners, members, and supporters to end the HIV epidemic and to combat the stigma surrounding HIV. For more information about our work, click here. To join the conversation about the 21st International AIDS Conference, follow the hashtag #AIDS2016.
‘Gays for Trump’ Homocon Milo Yiannopoulos Banned Permanently from Twitter for Racist Tweets at Leslie Jones
Milo Yiannopoulos, the gay conservative tech editor for Breitbart who used the Twitter handle @Nero, has been permanently banned from Twitter, hours before he was to take part in a ‘Gays for Trump’ event at the RNC.
The Guardian reports:
Yiannopoulos has been suspended from Twitter several times in the past for violating its terms of service, and had his verified status revoked earlier this year, prompting the hashtag #JeSuisMilo among his supporters.
But claims that he had fanned the flames of the harassment of Ghostbusters actor Leslie Jones on Twitter led to a “permanent suspension” from Twitter on Wednesday.
A few examples of the racist tweetstorm Yiannopoulos was facilitating are here.
I feel like I’m in a personal hell. I didn’t do anything to deserve this. It’s just too much. It shouldn’t be like this. So hurt right now.
— Leslie Jones (@Lesdoggg) July 19, 2016
Twitter released the following statement:
People should be able to express diverse opinions and beliefs on Twitter. But no one deserves to be subjected to targeted abuse online, and our rules prohibit inciting or engaging in the targeted abuse or harassment of others. Over the past 48 hours in particular, we’ve seen an uptick in the number of accounts violating these policies and have taken enforcement actions against these accounts, ranging from warnings that also require the deletion of Tweets violating our policies to permanent suspension.
We know many people believe we have not done enough to curb this type of behavior on Twitter. We agree. We are continuing to invest heavily in improving our tools and enforcement systems to better allow us to identify and take faster action on abuse as it’s happening and prevent repeat offenders. We have been in the process of reviewing our hateful conduct policy to prohibit additional types of abusive behavior and allow more types of reporting, with the goal of reducing the burden on the person being targeted. We’ll provide more details on those changes in the coming weeks.

— Charlie Warzel (@cwarzel) July 20, 2016
Yiannopoulos responded:
In a comment, Milo said “With the cowardly suspension of my account, Twitter has confirmed itself as a safe space for Muslim terrorists and Black Lives Matter extremists, but a no-go zone for conservatives.”
“Twitter is holding me responsible for the actions of fans and trolls using the special pretzel logic of the left. Where are the Twitter police when Justin Bieber’s fans cut themselves on his behalf?”
“Like all acts of the totalitarian regressive left, this will blow up in their faces, netting me more adoring fans. We’re winning the culture war, and Twitter just shot themselves in the foot.”
“This is the end for Twitter. Anyone who cares about free speech has been sent a clear message: you’re not welcome on Twitter.”

Ben Carson: Transgender People Are ‘The Height Of Absurdity’
“You know what? I’m Afghanistan. I know I don’t look that way. My ancestors came from Sweden, or something, I don’t know. But I really am. And if you say I’m not, you’re a racist.”

Ultimate Summer Reading List: LGBTQ-Inclusive Books
Post submitted by Charles Girard, HRC Welcoming Schools Coordinator
As people head out of town for beach trips and family vacations this summer, families often look for ways to keep children occupied. If you’re looking for a way to keep your children entertained, HRC’s Welcoming Schools has some carefully curated book recommendations just for you.
Illustrated Books
Families love our list of recommended picture books, which cover a variety of topics such as family diversity, gender and LGBTQ topics. This list includes I Am Jazz, an autobiographical book about HRC Youth Ambassador Jazz Jennings, And Tango Makes Three, about two male penguins that raise a baby together, and Lesléa Newman’s classic Heather Has Two Mommies. If you’re looking for illustrated books, be sure to check out Introducing Teddy. Released this May, Introducing Teddy features a transgender teddy bear who just wishes her human friend would call her Tilly.
Middle Grade Books
If you are looking for a book for a student who prefers more words than pictures, this list is for you. Some of our favorites on this list are Gracefully Grayson, which tells the story of a transgender 12-year-old, Half a World Away, a book following an adopted 11-year-old as his family travels to adopt another child, and The Liberation of Gabriel King, an incredible story about an interracial friendship set in the 1970s American South.
For Educators and Families
If you’re just looking for a title for yourself, we’ve got you covered with suggestions like Diane Ehrensaft’s Gender Born, Gender Made: Raising Healthy Gender-Nonconforming Children, Dignity for All: Safeguarding LGBT Students by Peter DeWitt and The Transgender Child: A Handbook for Families and Professionals by Stephanie Brill and Rachel Pepper.
Whether you’re staying home or going on vacation this summer, most of these books can be found in store, online or in your local public library. If your library or local book store doesn’t carry books about LGBTQ topics, you can always suggest some of these titles to add to the shelves.
HRC Welcoming Schools is a comprehensive approach to creating respectful and supportive elementary schools with resources and professional development to embrace family diversity, create LGBTQ-inclusive schools, prevent bias-based bullying and gender stereotyping, and support transgender and gender-expansive students.
