NEW MUSIC: Blood Orange, Bat For Lashes, Dexys

NEW MUSIC: Blood Orange, Bat For Lashes, Dexys

dev-hynes_050613

This week in New Music: a political-pop classic from Blood Orange aka Dev Hynes, Natasha Khan goes full concept on Bat For Lashes fourth album The Bride and Dexys release an odd but wonderful collection of “country” and Irish “traditional” covers.

Blood Orange – Freetown Sound

bloodorangefreetown soundAs Test Icicles and Lightspeed Champion, Dev Hynes (above) was always interesting and often exhilarating. With Blood Orange – via collaborations with the likes of FKA Twigs and Sky Ferreira  he seemingly found his voice.

Freetown Sound, his third album as Blood Orange, is highly personal, overtly political and startlingly accomplished mashup of R&B, jazz, pop funk and spoken word interludes. On “Hands Up” he references the murder of Trayvon Martin in Florida: “Keep your hood off when you’re walking….Sure enough, they’re gonna take your body.” All of this while going full Michael Jackson on tracks like “But You” and “Thank You.”

It has been compared with Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly. Add to that the classic 80s pop stylings of Prince and Janet Jackson with a touch of Lauryn Hill’s The Miseducation Of… and you have – in Hynes’ own words – an album “for everyone told they’re not black enough, too black, too queer, not queer the right way, the underappreciated.”

Add in Nelly Furtado on “Hadron Collider” and Deborah Harry on “EVP” and you have a pop classic.

Bat For Lashes – The Bride

Bat for Lashes the brideAs Bat For Lashes, Natasha Khan’s fourth album The Bride is a concept piece, a collection of torch songs telling the story of a woman whose fiancé dies before their wedding.

“I Do,” “Honeymooning Alone,” “Widow’s Peak,” “I Will Love Again,” “In Your Bed”….this could be torturous but in Khan’s hands The Bride is a menacing, inspired and sometimes intense collection.

Dexys – Let the Record ShowDexys Do Irish and Country Soul

Dexys - Let the Record Show Dexys Do Irish and Country SoulIt’s a sad, sad thing that Dexys Midnight Runners are forever to be remembered for 1982 dad-dancing disco filler “Come On Eileen.” While still a fantastic pop song 34 years later – frontman Kevin Rowland has said he knew it would be a massive, massive hit even before he finished writing it – the song has overshadowed everything the band has done since and had released before.

Too Tye Ay, the album from which “Come On Eileen” came is – deep breath – one of the best albums ever.

Now working as Dexys, One Day I’m Going To Soar felt like the follow-up that Too Rye Ay deserved. Working for themselves now, Kevin Rowland and co’s Dexys Do Irish and Country Soul does exactly what it says. With violinist Helen O’Hara back for the first time in 31 years, it feels like the moment that Dexys Midnight Runners would have naturally come to if they hadn’t split.

It’s idiosyncratic and a touch odd (see Joni Mitchell cover “Both Sides Now”) but others like “I’ll Take You Home Again, Kathleen,” “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” and “Carrickfergus” would bring a tear to the eye.

Steve Grand Gets Misty About Third Anniversary Of “All-American Boy”

Steve Grand Gets Misty About Third Anniversary Of “All-American Boy”

Steve-Grand.jpg

Steve Grand, that scantily-clad musician who wants to be recognized more for his music than his penchant for being scantily-clad, is celebrating an anniversary.

In a move that might remind you of the ex-boyfriend who wanted to celebrate the three-week mark and then the three-month milestone before being unceremoniously dumped, the weekend found Grand in a meditative mindset as he singlehandedly marked the occasion of the three-year anniversary of his country-tingled single “All-American Boy.”

“It’s been a beautiful, enriching, challenging, tumultuous, life-shaping journey,” he relates in a newly uploaded YouTube video. “I just want to say from the bottom of my heart I am so grateful and thankful to each and every one of you who have supported me in any way that you have.”

Perhaps Grand has finally invested in a publicist, as the new clip plays it extraordinarily safe and on paper reads like a press release. He stops just short of thanking the Academy.

“The rich moments of connectivity I have felt with you through sharing my music and videos and even some of my silly posts have warmed and empowered me,” he says.

But it’s been the challenging moments that have given me the opportunity to grow and heal in ways I might not have otherwise. My days are very busy and very focused – more busy and focused than ever. I absolutely love it.”

When not performing in various Pride celebrations and weekend shows, Grand promises he’s working on new music “every day,” so expect many more anniversaries from him in the future.

“While the legend of Tarzan taps into our primal fantasies about raw masculinity gone wild, it is also a story about being from two worlds and not fitting in,” filmmakers said in a press release. “Tarzan’s sense of being an outsider resonates with the queer community. And his superhuman power plays into our fantasy of unleashing our own inner lord of the jungle.”

FBI Recommends No Charges Against Hillary Clinton in Email Probe – VIDEO

FBI Recommends No Charges Against Hillary Clinton in Email Probe – VIDEO

james comey

FBI Director James Comey says the Bureau will not be filing charges against Hillary Clinton for her use of a private email server during her tenure as Secretary of State.

Comey called the investigation “credible” and one that had no outside political influence. He also said that no one at The White House or in the Clinton campaign knew the outcome of his investigation prior to his announcement this morning.

Comey, a George W. Bush appointee, did say that Clinton and the State Department did not use the best judgment in how they handled her email and the server.

The AP reports:

Comey said that although the investigation found “extremely careless” behavior by Clinton and her staff in their handling of sensitive information, the FBI had concluded that “no charges are appropriate.” He said the agency believed that “no reasonable prosecutor would bring such a case.”

The announcement came three days after the FBI interviewed Clinton for hours in a final step of its yearlong investigation into the possible mishandling of classified information.

Attorney General Loretta Lynch said last week that she would accept the recommendations of the FBI director and of career prosecutors, meaning that Comey’s decision almost certainly brings the legal part of the issue to a close and removes the threat of criminal charges.

John Cena Reminds America that Love Has No Labels in Patriotic PSA – WATCH

John Cena Reminds America that Love Has No Labels in Patriotic PSA – WATCH

john cena psa

In a new PSA for the Ad Council, John Cena smacks down those who celebrate a currently popular brand of empty patriotism that claims to put country first, but ends up putting love last.

The WWE wrestler and actor asks viewers to picture what they think the ‘average American’ looks like–before proceeding to explain they will most likely miss the truth about what America looks like. As Mashable notes, Cena breaks down the numbers: “Of 319 million U.S. citizens, 51% are female, 54 million are Latino, 27 million are disabled, 9 million are LGBT, 3.5 million are Muslim — and the list goes on through many more statistics about people’s identifiers.”

Cena points out that the population of LGBT Americans amounts to more than the entire population of the state of Virginia.

Whenever Cena discusses a certain minority group in the video, background actors signifying that group enter into the following shot of Cena as he makes his way down a sort of Main Street in what is undoubtedly mean to be a ‘Anytown, USA.’

When Cena discusses LGBT Americans, for example, a pair of gay dads and their daughter appear in the background.

While the PSA celebrates love beyond labels, Cena suggests that labels should actually be celebrated. He explains,

“We know that labels don’t devalue us, they help define us, keeping us dialed into our cultures and our beliefs in who we are as Americans. After all, what is more American than freedom to celebrate what makes us, us.”

And while labels have their role to help connect us to who we are, love must transcend labels–and so must patriotism, as Cena points out:

“Patriotism shouldn’t just be about pride of country. It should be about love, love beyond age, disability, sexuality, race, religion and any other labels, because the second any of us judge people based on those labels, we’re not really being patriotic are we?”

The PSA is a follow up to the Ad Council’s viral hit from 2015 also titled “Love Has No Labels” that used an X-ray machine to prove that underneath our skin, we are all the same regardless of who we love.

The latest PSA features a diverse cast of background actors and also highlights same-sex couples and a rainbow flag flying on the Main Street where Cena takes his patriotic stroll.

2016 ELECTION. Is Donald Trump on Fen-Phen?

Australia gay marriage 2AUSTRALIA. Election called win for marriage equality: “LGBTI groups have declared the election a win for marriage equality, with at least seven opponents of same-sex marriage voted out and two new LGBTI MPs elected for the Coalition. Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (Pflag) noted seven Coalition MPs who oppose same-sex marriage lost their seats: Andrew Nikolic, Brett Whiteley, Jamie Briggs, Peter Hendy, Russell Matheson, Michelle Landry and Louise Markus.”

BREXIT. Nigel Farage resigns as UKIP leader.”It is the third time he has stepped down as the party leader, but Farage dismissed the idea of coming back again in the future and claimed standing as an MP was no longer top of his to-do list. Speaking at a press conference in Westminster on Monday, he said: “During the referendum I said I wanted my country back … now I want my life back.””

MALE, PALE, AND STALE. Oxford University replacing portraits of famous men with gay, female, and black icons: “The university has commissioned dozens of new portraits at a cost of £900 each, the Sunday Times reported. Staff and students have been ask to nominate ‘suitable subjects’ by the end of this week, it added. LOS ANGELES. BROKEN RAINBOW. Investigation into the collapse of Britain’s only national charity for LGBT victims of domestic abuse. “Broken Rainbow, which ran both a helpline and an advice service for LGBT people in abusive relationships, went into liquidation on 3 June, with the causes of the collapse unknown. But BuzzFeed News has now seen a huge cache of internal files – including accounts, expenses claims, bank statements, and demands from unpaid creditors – that reveal crucial new information about the charity’s collapse.”

Chelsea ManningCHELSEA MANNING. Whistleblower posts op-ed for the Guardian about lifting of ban on transgender troops: “The policy outlined by Defense Secretary Ashton Carter would require new recruits to be “stable in their identified gender for 18 months, as certified by their doctor, before they can enter the military”. How many young trans people like myself fit this criteria? The idea of having a gender certification process is a misuse of the medically accepted standards of care. What is the stability of gender? Isn’t gender an inherently unstable concept – always being constrained by the various context and rules under which we live? I worry that this type of requirement will further entrench the gender binary and further legitimize the control that administrators and medical providers have over our bodies and our identities. And what about those of us who are incarcerated? Will these rules apply to us? I am deeply concerned that like so many policies, the impact of this change won’t penetrate the prison walls. What does it mean that the military will recognize our gender, unless and until we are arrested, and then what? This core identity is then stripped away and our birth assigned sex is imposed on us?”

HE’S AN A**HOLE. Michael Sam on Donald Trump.

brazilBRAZIL. Epidemic of anti-gay violence is only tip of the iceberg: “While Americans have fiercely debated how to respond to the massacre last month at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Fla., Brazilians have been confronting their own epidemic of anti-gay violence — one that, by some counts, has earned Brazil the ignominious ranking of the world’s deadliest place for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people. Nearly 1,600 people have died in hate-motivated attacks in the past four and half years, according to Grupo Gay da Bahia, which tracks the deaths through news articles. By its tally, a gay or transgender person is killed almost every day in this nation of 200 million.”

True BloodVAMPING. True Blood to become stage musical: “Like the TV show, “True Blood: The Musical” is set in the fictional town of Bon Temps, La., where vampires live among humans. The town also boasts witches, fairies, shape-shifters and werewolves. If a full production ever materializes, there will be plenty of special effects.”

SELF-DRIVING. Tesla owner killed in autopilot crash was watching Harry Potter: “He was killed May 7 in Williston, Florida, when his car’s cameras failed to distinguish the white side of a turning tractor-trailer from a brightly lit sky and didn’t automatically activate the brakes, according to statements by the government and the automaker. Brown didn’t take control and brake, either.”

ANTON YELCHIN. Zachary Quinto remembers his co-star.
