This Amazing Gay Food Art Will Leave You Hungry For More

“I first find a picture of what I want to create, whether it’s a celebrity, a landscape, an animal,” queer artist Harley Langberg (pictured) tells Queerty. “Then I analyze the picture, match up colors to food, then go shopping for the ingredients.”

28-year-old Langberg is a self-described “food artist” who lives and works in New York City. Some of his creations include portraits of icons like Madonna, Lady Gaga and Karl Lagerfeld, among others.

He first got into creating food art back about three years ago.

“It was in the fall of 2013 when I lived down in the west village and I was in Chelsea market and saw photographs of a food artist,” he recalls. “I was so amazed, inspired and excited by the works that I went home to try to create something that night. From then on I fell in love with it.”

Langberg says he hopes his work both entertains and inspires audiences to think in new and creative ways.

“I hope they take away an appreciation for art and creativity and for pushing the boundaries and thinking outside the box,” he says. “I also hope to inspire people to pursue their own creative path because creativity exists in everyone.”

Gawker’s Rich Juzwiak and Former MTV VJ Dave Holmes Talk About His New Memoir: WATCH

Earlier this week we featured former MTV VJ Dave Holmes’ new memoir as one of our TowleREAD selections. The book, called Party of One: A Memoir in 21 Songs which takes the music of the ’80s, ’90s, and ’00s as its soundtrack as Holmes chronicles his journey through those decades as a gay man, from high school to Catholic college, to the bars of New York City and the advertising industry, and to his accidental career as a VJ.

Gawker’s Rich Juzwiak sat down with Holmes to talk about the book in a thorough, 47-minute conversation which touches on the book’s ‘gayness’, Holmes’ interest in music and how it flows through out the book, concepts of masculinity and what they meant for a kid coming of age in St. Louis in the ’80s. Also, sexual identity.

NC Lawmakers Change Tiny, Insufficient Portion of Anti-LGBT HB2 Before Ending Session

North Carolina lawmakers ended their session by reversing a small portion of HB 2 but left intact most of the hateful law.

The News & Observer reports:

The two chambers also late Friday agreed to make a change to the law known as House Bill 2 as requested by McCrory, who wanted to have restored the right of workers to sue for employment discrimination using a state law. It cleared the House by a vote of 85-15 and 27-14 in the Senate and now goes to McCrory. His office didn’t immediately respond the action.

But the change to House Bill 2, approved in March and the subject of criticism nationally, didn’t repeal provisions that limited non-discrimination rules for lesbians, gays, bisexual and transgender people and directed which restroom transgender people can use.

Earlier in the week the NBA, the Charlotte Hornets, and the Human Rights Campaign blasted proposed revisions to the law for not going far enough. The NBA has said that HB 2 in its current form puts Charlotte at risk of losing the 2017 NBA All-Star game.

HB 2 is now officially a “disaster” for the state as the Senate has transferred money from a disaster relief fund in the amount of $500,000 to gove McCrory’s office cash to defend the law in court.

That means that NC Republicans—the very people who rushed to pass HB2—have declared it a “disaster”… of their own making. Heh. Haha. LOL. Of course, they’re also finally trying to rework the law under threat that the NBA will pull the plug on next year’s All-Star Game in Charlotte. Also laughable since the NBA is already flat-out rejecting the effort because it does nothing to curb discrimination against transgender individuals.

Gay Men Urged to Get Vaccinated After Meningococcal Death, Outbreak in California

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has issued a health advisory related to an outbreak of invasive meningococcal disease, after one man died and eight others got infected in Southern California.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health said in a statement that “of the nine cases, four have occurred among residents of Los Angeles County (excluding Pasadena and Long Beach which have separate health departments), and five cases in neighboring health jurisdictions.”

Dr. Karen Smith, CDPH director and State Public Health Officer said that gay and bisexual men, as well as all people with HIV might be at particular high risk for the disease and she encourages “men who partner with other men to be aware of the risk of meningococcal disease and consider getting vaccinated.”

The U.S. Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices says that HIV-infected people are at increased risk of contracting the disease, and it recommends that all HIV-infected persons aged two months and older be routinely vaccinated with the meningococcal vaccine that protects against serogroups A, C, W and Y disease (MenACWY).

The Los Angeles Times reported that “the rare infection is caused by the bacteria Neisseria meningitides, which affect the bloodstream and can lead to meningitis. At least six cases were caused by a particular strain of meningococcal bacteria”.

Meningococcal bacteria can spread through saliva or mucus form kissing, coughing, sharing drinks or cigarettes, or even lengthy contact.

The CDPH health advisory adds:

Meningococcal bacteria are transmitted through close personal contact and can be spread from person to person by small droplets of respiratory secretions from the nose and throat. Gay and bisexual men may be at increased risk of meningococcal disease if they have close or intimate contact with multiple partners, regularly visit crowded venues such as bars and parties, or smoke cigarettes, marijuana or illegal drugs. State health officials urge all HIV-infected persons and gay and bisexual men who may be at increased risk for meningococcal disease to consider receiving MenACWY.

All HIV-infected adults should receive two doses of MenACWY. Gay and bisexual men who are at increased risk for meningococcal disease and are not HIV-infected should receive one dose of MenACWY vaccine. Those who have not been tested for HIV within the last year should be offered an HIV test along with vaccination. Adults may locate meningococcal vaccines in their area by using CDC’s Adult Vaccine Finder.

Dr. Matt Zahn, medical director of epidemiology and assessment at the Orange County Health Care Agency told The Orange County Register that one in 10 people die from meningococcal disease, but the disease is “vaccine-preventable.”

Symptoms of the disease typically start in just a few days and may include fever, vomiting, severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, rash and generalized muscle pains. If people experience any of those symptoms, they should seek medical help immediately.
