APPEALS COURT DENIES SCHOOL’S REQUEST TO REHEAR TRANSGENDER STUDENT’S RIGHTS CASE: The Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals has rejected a request by a Virginia school district to rehear the lawsuit filed by transgender student Gavin Grimm. Grimm’s discrimination claim against Virginia’s Gloucester County School District alleged the district violated Title IX by denying him use of the boy’s restroom. After the Circuit Court’s 2-1 decision last month affirming the Department of Education’s interpretation of Title IX of the Education Act of 1972 as protecting transgender students like Grimm from discrimination, the Virginia school board asked for the rehearing in front of the entire 15-judge panel. The case now goes back to federal district court in Virginia for a decision more deferential to the Department of Education’s interpretation. More from The Washington Post.

HRC CALLS ON FAA TO ENSURE THAT U.S. TAXPAYERS AREN’T FOOTING BILL FOR DISCRIMINATION BY NC AIRPORTS: HRC is calling on the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to determine whether public airports in North Carolina are enforcing the state’s discriminatory HB2 law in violation of the Civil Rights Act, especially given the significant financial support they receive from taxpayer-funded Airport Improvement Grants used to operate and expand facilities. “If these airports comply with the discriminatory mandate of HB2, they will be in direct violation of federal law and therefore these grant requirements,” HRC President Chad Griffin told FAA Administrator Michael Huerta in a letter. “We urge you to take steps immediately to hold these public airports accountable and to ensure that state sanctioned — and funded — discrimination does not continue on your watch.” The U.S. Department of Justice takes the position that the Civils Rights Act of 1964 extends to claims of discrimination based on gender identity. More from The Charlotte Observer.

  • Psychologist and author Diane Ehrensaft argues that HB2 hits youth the hardest, including both transgender and non-transgender children. Enforcing HB2, she says, creates obvious harm and suffering for transgender children, and also teaches “bigotry, fear and misunderstanding among their non-transgender peers…” Ehrensaft’s assessment echoes that of a growing group of child welfare professionals — including members of the American Academy of Pediatrics — who have warned of the dangers HB2 poses to youth in particular.
  • Gov. Pat McCrory continues to live in a make-believe world when it comes to opposition to his discriminatory HB2 law. Last week, his campaign claimed that “we don’t know who funds” HRC. A quick look into McCrory’s claim by the fact-checking outlet Politifact found that the governor’s ludicrous assertion is “clearly wrong.” Get the full breakdown here.

CELEBRATING LGBTQ EQUALITY, PRESIDENT OBAMA KICKS OFF PRIDE MONTH: Today, HRC proudly kicks off National LGBTQ Pride Month, which annually marks the anniversary of the famous 1969 Stonewall riots in New York City that sparked the broader LGBTQ rights movement. President Obama marked the occasion with a moving proclamation yesterday: “[The LGBTQ community has] spurred sweeping progress by changing hearts and minds and by demanding equal treatment — under our laws, from our courts, and in our politics. This month, we recognize all they have done to bring us to this point, and we recommit to bending the arc of our Nation toward justice.” More from HRC.

TODAY — MASSACHUSETTS HOUSE EXPECTED TO VOTE ON PROTECTIONS FOR TRANSGENDER PEOPLE: On the heels of news that Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker supports a bill guaranteeing legal protections for transgender people in restaurants, grocery stores and other public places, the House is expected to vote today on the measure. HRC Communications Director Jay Brown stressed the need for such protections in the state: “Transgender people in Massachusetts deserve full equality under the law, including the same protections in public places that are afforded to other groups. Despite false claims from our opponents, there’s been absolutely no increase in public safety risks from providing these protections in the more than 100 cities and 18 states that have them on the books — many for decades.”

TEXAS LT. GOVERNOR DAN PATRICK DOESN’T KNOW ANY TRANS PEOPLE, BUT URGES SCHOOLS TO DISCRIMINATE AGAINST THEM: At a press conference on Tuesday, Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick urged the state’s 1,200 school districts to defy the recent guidance issued by the Departments of Education and Justice clarifying that transgender students are encompassed under federal education non-discrimination law and helping schools to ensure that transgender students can learn in a safe, supportive environment. The press conference was intended to outline the “next steps” Texas would take after the state’s Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a lawsuit last week seeking to nullify that guidance. Tellingly, when asked whether he actually knew any transgender Texans, the Lt. Gov. replied: “No, I don’t know if on a personal basis I do.” Later, parents of transgender children gathered at the state Capitol to rebuke Patrick’s vile comments. “I’m here to tell Dan Patrick, you — specifically you — are endangering my child’s life because you have now told everyone in the state of Texas that it’s OK to harass my child, it’s OK for the school district to stop supporting him.” said Ann Elder of Friendswood, Texas, the mother of a 10-year-old transgender son. More from Fox 7.

CANADIAN PREMIERE VOWS TO END DISCRIMINATORY PARENTING LAW: Canadian Premiere Kathleen Wynne has pledged to pass legislation that will end discrimination against same-sex parents in the registration of birth certificates in Ontario. Currently, Ontario law mandates that only a birth mother and her live-in male partner or the child’s male biological father can be legally recognized as parents. These discriminatory requirements often force same-sex parents to adopt their own children. Wynne said that the “laws are outdated and do not reflect our views on who can form a family,” and stressed her commitment to passing legislation with an LGBT-inclusive definition of parents. More from CBC News.

BRIT’S HEALTH SERVICE SHOCKS, REFUSES TO PROVIDE HIV-PREVENTION DRUG: NHS (National Health Service) England has announced that it will not roll out the HIV-prevention treatment PrEP, shocking advocates, including the UK’s leading HIV charity National AIDS Trust (NAT). While NHS England has said it does not have the “legal power to commission PrEP,” NAT says it will consider legal action against the healthcare system for refusing to provide the drug. The charity said that the NHS’s decision to not commission PrEP leaves “this potentially life-changing drug on the shelf and inaccessible to people at real risk of HIV.” More from BuzzFeed.

NAURU DECRIMINALIZES SAME-SEX ACTIVITY: Nauru, a small island state in the Pacific Ocean and the world’s third smallest country by size, is the latest country to decriminalize same-sex relations by updating its criminal code. Nauru’s unicameral parliament updated the existing Criminal Code of 1899, which had criminalized same-sex relations by up to 14 years in prison, based on Australian colonial-era laws. Despite this positive development, Nauru still has a long way to go: it lacks an LGBT-inclusive non-discrimination law and does not have marriage equality. More from HRC.

NEW ABSOLUT COMMERCIAL STARS TRANSGENDER ACTRESS: A new commercial from Absolut stars transgender actress Carol Marra as part of the company’s #AbsolutNights campaign. It shows two friends, one of whom is transgender, reconnecting at a music festival. “For 30+ years, Absolut has supported people’s rights to be their true selves with the help of our artistic collaborations and ongoing support of the LGBT community,” Absolut shared on Facebook. “Our mission statement to foster a more open and diverse world does exactly that. It invites you to be you, at your most authentic, true self.” More from HRC.

Anti-LGBTQ Agitator Selected to Lead Prominent Hate Group

Anti-LGBTQ Agitator Selected to Lead Prominent Hate Group

Brian Brown, the head of the shadowy anti-LGBTQ group National Organization for Marriage (NOM) has been elected to lead the notorious World Congress of Families (WCF), an anti-LGBTQ hate group. His election occurred during WCF’s 10th international gathering held in Tbilisi, Georgia last month.

Designated an anti-LGBT hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, WCF provides a platform for some of the most virulently anti-LGBTQ extremists from around the world.

Since 1997, WCF has held conferences and events around the world that foster homophobia and transphobia under the guise of protecting the “natural family.” It is connected to the highest levels of government in countries across five continents where it operates. WCF’s activities have ranged from holding conferences in Nigeria focused on denying rights to LGBTQ people to working to silence the Russian LGBTQ community.

Brown was elected as WCF president at the WCF X conference that took place May 15-18, the same time LGBTQ Georgians celebrated the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOT). In 2013, IDAHOT was marred by anti-LGBTQ violence in the capital.

Since 2012, Brown has publicly supported anti-LGBTQ movements and traveled to France, Russia, Australia, Spain and Trinidad and Tobago. In an interview in Russia in 2013, Brown said, “Right now you’re having the fight about adoption, but the adoption issue is indivisible from the marriage issue. If you don’t defend your values now, I’m afraid we’re going to see very negative developments all over the world.”

The most recent conference of this hate group, WCF IX, was held in Salt Lake City, Utah in October 2015 and HRC hosted an Inclusive Families Conference in Salt Lake City days before it. HRC’s ‘Export of Hate’ report released last June provides detailed information about the activities of the WCF and its participants and supporters.

Bud Light celebrates marriage equality in new TV spot

Bud Light celebrates marriage equality in new TV spot

Bud Light

Bud Light today debuted the latest ad in the company’s Bud Light Party series starring Seth Rogan and Amy Schumer. The spot first aired during The Ellen Degeneres Show and humorously points out how weddings for same-sex couples are just like any other wedding.

“The Bud Light Party champions inclusivity among modern beer drinkers and bringing people together—for fun—over a beer. By featuring Seth and Amy at a same-sex wedding, we’re showing how all weddings – regardless of who is getting married – share many similarities and moments to celebrate. We created this spot because equality for all Americans is a concept that unites many Bud Light drinkers,” said Alex Lambrecht, Vice President, Bud Light at Anheuser-Busch.

“Bud Light has long been a staunch supporter of the LGBT community,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, GLAAD President & CEO. “This spot is the latest in a long line of inclusive advertising that will help increase understanding and accelerate LGBT acceptance. GLAAD has been honored to partner with Bud Light for 18 years.”

Bud Light’s history of LGBT-inclusive advertising began in 1995 with a print ad. That same year, Anheuser-Busch and its local wholesalers also pledged to donate a portion of all Bud Light sales to support AIDS-related non-profit organizations in local communities.

The ad marks the first day of LGBT Pride Month, which is especially historic this year as we celebrate the Supreme Court’s historic ruling that made marriage equality the law of the land.

GUEST POST: Navigating life and growing up with two moms

GUEST POST: Navigating life and growing up with two moms

Wednesday, June 1, 2016. On this date, LGBTQ bloggers, their family members, and allies from across the U.S. and around the world will celebrate the 11th annual Blogging for LGBTQ Families Day. The event, developed and run by the GLAAD award-winning (for Outstanding Blog) LGBTQ-parenting site Mombian, and sponsored by the Family Equality Council, aims to celebrate LGBTQ families, their diverse natures, and raise awareness of how current prejudices and laws have a negative impact on their lives and children.  Mombian is asking LGBT families, straight allies and all other supporters to write and submit to Mombian.com, a blog post on any topic relating to LGBT families.

Hannah Moch works in communications with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. She was born, raised and lives in New York City.

I have always been Hannah with two mommies. I don’t know when I realized that talking about my family was political but I’ve been going to rallies with my moms for a long time, so it must have been early. Queerspawns (my favorite term for kids of LGBTQ folks) have to walk a fine line between talking about our families just like everyone else and not bringing up hot-button political issues at inopportune moments.

When I was about five, I was in Disney World with my moms and as the long lines stretched out for what seemed like miles ahead of us, I became bored. I turned to the family behind us in line and said the one thing I always said to people:

“Hi! I’m Hannah and I have two moms.”

The mother pulled her two children out of line and away from us. This was around 1998. I had broken some sort of Disney World code. The first time I had dinner with my boyfriend’s parents, much thought went into bringing up my family structure. It’s an unwritten rule that politics should not be discussed when you “meet the parents.” But ultimately, I don’t think I could date someone whose family didn’t approve of mine, so I brought my moms up, and it (happily) went in the opposite direction of my Disney encounter.

In the last two years, I’ve also started working in the “real world.” Politics should only be brought up in an office setting where it is relevant, so I’ve found myself teetering on that fine line (and I am not that graceful!). I work in a national nonprofit with volunteers from all over the country. I have no idea how some of them might feel about LGBTQ parenting. Is it my responsibility to shield them from something that might make them uncomfortable? Absolutely not, but I don’t really want to know if any of my allies in the fight for suicide prevention are on the opposing side of the LGBTQ-rights battle field.

The other question facing queerspawns everywhere is whether it’s fair that our families are political. The answer is no. We shouldn’t have to feel like walking soapboxes and I know many kids who don’t talk about their families for just this reason. But I long ago owned my role as a human soapbox/billboard. I love it.

Having two moms is such a part of who I am that I don’t really have an off button for it. Recently, a volunteer for the organization I work for saw a tweet I posted with some photos of my family.

“You should tell that story MORE often!” she told me.

Never, in my life, has anyone told me to tell the story of my family MORE often. If anything, I’m the girl who won’t shut up about it. I appreciated the gesture, though; she was letting me know that I was in a safe space (at least with her) to discuss my family, and there’s something to be said for allies like that.

In a world that is becoming more and more accepting it’s possible that one day no one will bat an eyelash when I talk about my moms , but until then, I am grateful for the spaces where my moms aren’t seen as a political issue. They’re just Mom and Mama.  My parents.  And we are just like any other family.

I dreamed a dream: Finding my LGBT family thicker than blood

I dreamed a dream: Finding my LGBT family thicker than blood

I was eleven years old when I first visited New York City. Walking down 5th Avenue looking at the stores, pushing through the busy crowds, admiring the skyscrapers, smelling the… smells, and hearing all the noises, I fell in love. I turned to my dad and said, “I’m going to live here one day.”

He smiled and gave me the look a parent gives when their child says something unrealistic, but he said, “Go for it.”

Eight years later, at the age of 19, the same father who encouraged my dreams of being a New Yorker publicly denounced me to his church the same week I came out of the closet.

September 25, 2014, I sent a letter to my mother. I told her how much I loved her. I told her I had wanted to change. I told her I wanted to live a life she would be pleased with and one in which I wouldn’t face ridicule and judgment. I told her I had tried everything in my power to be ‘normal’ in her eyes. But, it never happened. Then, I told her I had no longer believed it was wrong to be gay and to live a life true to who I am. I told her I wanted nothing to change between my family and me, and I just wanted the ability to love who I wanted to love. I told her all of these things and between each paragraph, I reminded her how much I loved her.

Her only response: “I’m sorry you have chosen to leave our family…. My heart is breaking.”

I could go into all the dramatic details of how difficult this was for me, but instead, I will skip that part, change direction, and focus on the positives that have now formed in my life from coming out.

A few months later, Preston (pictured above at Nashville pride with me) entered my life. I met him how all people in the South meet one another: at church. After a series of meaningful conversations where I shared my heart with him and he shared how he already cared so much about me after just a few minutes of talking, he established me as his little brother. Preston and his husband, Wesley, are my closest friends to this day. Though we live states apart, we get together at least twice a year. Other than that, we talk daily about life, love, dating, and how to become who I want to be in life. I made a family member who I know will always be here for me. Holidays are not nearly as lonely, and birthdays aren’t just another day. They are special events I spend with him as my family. The greatest part about our brotherhood relationship is I can be 100% who I am with him. There’s no lying or pretending to be something I’m not. I hadn’t had that before meeting him.

Then two other men and I crossed paths thanks to my coming out, Gerald and his husband Bruce–New Yorkers. They found out about me through people at the college I attend, which Gerald also attended. They invited me to New York City and showed me around. We had an amazing time and connected by shopping, going out to gay bars, and simply walking around the city. I don’t recall ever feeling as accepted by an enviroment or by people for who I am than when I was in New York City with Gerald and Bruce. They soon became my “uncles,” and I know they will always be watching out for me.

While I was visiting them for the first time, they introduced me to GLAAD’s Vice President of Programs, Zeke Stokes.

Now, here I sit in his office writing this blog post in the middle of Manhattan. The sirens and horns are going off outside continuously. The sound of construction gives me a sense of being productive. People shout at each other with no qualms about what others may think of them. Gay couples walk by hand-in-hand in public. Skyscrapers reach to the heavens. I have a room in Brooklyn (with a view that makes me feel like I’m from Sex and the City). I’m in the process of moving to the city I love. My dreams, as the cliché goes, are coming true.

But, none of this would have ever happened if I hadn’t come out of the closet. If I hadn’t told my family I was gay, they wouldn’t have cut me off. My adopted brother and my uncles in New York would have never reached out to me because our paths would not have crossed if I had stayed in the closet. My uncles would have never introduced me to GLAAD, where I get to help accelerate acceptance for people like me–including LGBT Southerners–and I wouldn’t have made the connections I am making now to make my dreams of living in Manhattan a reality.

Coming out was the most painful and excruciating thing I had ever done. But, my life is a dream because I came out. I gained so much, but most of all, I have a family who loves me unconditionally.

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant: Christians Willing To Be Crucified to Support Anti-LGBT Law – WATCH

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant: Christians Willing To Be Crucified to Support Anti-LGBT Law – WATCH

phil bryant

Speaking at last week’s Watchmen on the Wall conference, Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant said that persecuted Christians will queue up to be crucified in support of his and other states’ anti-LGBT legislation.

Introduced by none other than conference head honcho, prolific Tweeter and hate group Family Research Council president Tony Perkins, Bryant mewled that “all of the secular progressive world had decided that they were going to pour their anger” on him because of Mississippi’s controversial law:

“They don’t know us very well, do they? They don’t know that Christians have been persecuted throughout the ages. They don’t know that if it takes crucifixion, we will stand in line before abandoning our faith and our belief in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. So if we are going to stand, now is the time and this is the place.”

Why religious freedom is so important: as believers, whatever we do, in leisure or necessity, is for God’s glory. pic.twitter.com/lIXfwUQjei

— Tony Perkins (@tperkins) May 28, 2016

Bryant also more or less suggested that Perkins is something of a modern day Messiah who “was there as surely as Our Lord and Savior, as surely as the God of all gods stood there with us.”

Gov. Phil Bryant isn’t a leader; he’s a follower of extremists like Tony Perkins: “yes, sir.” No surprise here: t.co/M7R7nKpBNO

— Donna Ladd (@DonnerKay) June 23, 2015

“I can tell you how fortunate we are in this nation and in this organization to have a man of faith and leadership in Tony,” he added.

Last week, Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood said he would not represent Mississippi after Bryant announced he’d join the lawsuit being brought by 11 states against the Obama administration over recent guidance on transgender students.

Summer 2016: What You’re Doing to Make This the Sexiest Season Ever

Summer 2016: What You’re Doing to Make This the Sexiest Season Ever

summer 2016

Take your shirts off, put your Havaianas on and turn the music up! The year’s sexiest season is about to begin.

Can you believe it’s finally happening again? After what seemed like an impossibly long wait, along comes another Memorial Day in all of its glory to remind us why June, July and August are the hottest months in the gay calendar — in more ways than one.

This weekend marked the unofficial kickoff to the summer, which is the official season for Pride celebrations, frozen margaritas, tea dances, tanned bodies and summer loves. Just to name a few of our favorite things.

We surveyed a few of you to see how you plan on spending the warmer months, and what you think we should all do to make the summer of 2016 the best ever.

Mason Meyer, 36, Los Angeles, CA

I just kicked off my Memorial Day summer plans with a trip to Costa Rica with a couple of my best buddies. We are hitting up all the hottest spots we heard about: up north in the jungle at Arenal Volcano to soak in the hot springs, rock climb through the waterfalls, zip line, and white water raft. Then we head down to the Pacific beach at Manuel Antonio. Finally a little time in San Jose to do a little urban cultural stuff like visiting the museums and the market. I’m still planning the rest of summer but I definitely want to go back to NYC to connect with friends and then spend most of my time on Fire Island and the Hamptons while I’m back East. Laguna is fun for the Fourth of July so I’ll probably do that.  Lastly, I want to go to Hawaii for a week or so in August since I haven’t been yet and it’s not a far trip from LA. I hear Maui and Kauai are amazing.

Tips for the best summer ever: Don’t let it pass you by. Do something or go somewhere you’ve never been. And always have fun doing it.

The song of the summer will be: “I Took a Pill in Ibiza”, by Mike Posner

Laura Calçada, 28, and Fanny Zarifi, 25, Brooklyn, NY

fanny and lauraWorking and enjoying New York City until the beginning of August. Then we are traveling to Europe. We still have to figure out where and when. But the plan is to go to my hometown Marseille and my family house in Provence. Then to Laura’s Italian family in Positano. We’d also love to spend one or two weeks in this little hotel we’ve heard about in Mexico, which looks like paradise on earth. Plans for the future: to get married there!

Tips for the best summer ever: Spend it with people you love and a glass of French rosé.

The song of the summer will be: “Hold Up”, by Beyoncé

Jacob Groody, 25, Alameda, CA

jacob groodyThis summer I’ll be moving from Alameda, California to Portland, Oregon. I’m moving in the beginning of summer and for the rest of it, I’ll be unpacking, decorating, and looking for a job. My ideal summer would be to go to Mendocino. My family and I would sometimes stay there and it was always a lot of fun. I haven’t gone in years and I miss it! But I’ve always been a winter person: hot days while wearing two binders can be a real drag!

Tips for the best summer ever: Take a lot of pictures, wear a lot of sunscreen, and be a little more spontaneous than you normally would be.

The song of the summer will be: “HandClap”, by Fitz and the Tantrums

Leslie Howitt, 53, New York, NY

leslie howittIt’s always a gay summer for me. Pride is like my Christmas! (Howitt is a proud straight ally.) This Summer I’m having fun in Fire Island Pines, of course! I love spending a few months on the Island painting and dancing. I also like traveling here and there. Greece would be nice. Every summer gets better. I meet new people and make new friends… and reconnect with old ones.

Tips for the best summer ever: Spend as much time as you can with good friends, laugh as much as possible. Dance, beach, beach, beach and wear sunscreen.

The song of the summer will be: “Can’t Stop the Feeling”, by Justin Timberlake

Valerio Rosa, 45, Miami, FL

valerio rosaI just arrived in East Hampton from Miami, and I’ll stay here until a little after Labor Day. I’m going to be working here, and having a lot a fun with my friends, as I do every Summer. We love hanging out at home drinking wine, having barbecues, going to Two Mile Hollow Beach, eating at the town’s cute little restaurants and sitting around bonfires at the beach. I’m also going to celebrate Pride in New York City, which I haven’t done in a while. I hope this is going to be a really good summer.

Tips for the best summer ever: If you are in the Hamptons, check out the town’s little restaurants and bars. And eat the lobster!

The song of the summer will be: “Hold Up”, by Beyoncé

enio_michaelWe have a few trips planned for the summer.  In June, we are going to Gay Pride in New York City, a longstanding tradition for us and great time to reconnect with friends and celebrate our community on grand scale. After the Pride festivities, we will head out to the Hamptons to relax and visit friends there as well. Later in the summer, we are making a trip to Northern Michigan to visit with family and enjoy the beauty of the Great Lakes. We’ll be in Deer Lake, near Boyne Mountain in Michigan, go on boat trips, and visit the little towns in the area. We used to go every year and take the dog, when we lived in Chicago.

Tips for the best summer ever: Fully embrace every moment, conversation, glance and adventure that comes your way; be ready to be amazed. Spend quality time with friends, have fun, laugh, drink wine, go to the beach, watch sunsets.

The song of the summer will be: “U Wear It Well”, by RuPaul or “Work” by Rihanna.

Nicole J. Caruth, 37, Omaha NE

nicole_caruthI’ll be doing travel-work more than vacationing this summer, though I’m fortunate that my jobs requires me to engage with artists and art spaces. I plan to see as much art as possible this summer, particularly in the middle of the country. Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Denver, Kansas City, and Chicago are on my list. I’d also love to spend one week at the Berlin Biennial, two weeks in Mumbai followed by a month volunteering on a farm or researching food insecurity near New Delhi, and a month in Thailand taking yoga with the fabulous Tara Eden, a former New York City-based instructor.

Tips for the best summer ever: Do two things you didn’t do last summer.

The song of the summer will be: Something from Drake’s new album.

Tom Meier, 49, Long Island City, NY and Ron Tuazon, 43, Montreal, Canada

tom meierIt’s important to not only plan ahead, but be spontaneous and go what feels like fun. This year, we kicked off our summer in Montreal. We are celebrating Pride in New York City, of course, and right after that we’ll go to  Fire Island Pines for July 4th weekend. In August, we’ll go back to Montreal for Pride, and then an entire week in the Pines. We are also doing a weekend in the Hamptons, but haven’t decided when, yet.

Tips for the best summer ever: Break free from your routine, stay up late, miss some workouts, sample all the food at the BBQ, have a tequila-fueled night. Dance on the beach. Laugh as much as possible. Surround yourself with great friends, fresh food and sunshine.

The song of the summer will be: “Can’t Stop the Feeling”, by Justin Timberlake.

New York Catholic Church Spent $2 Million To Block Reform of Child Sex Abuse Laws: VIDEO

Cardinal Timothy Dolan

The Catholic church has spent more than $2 million on lobbying in an effort to block a bill that would make it easier for child sex abuse victims to seek justice.

Headed by New York City Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the New York Catholic Conference used Wilson Elser Moskowitz Edelman & Dicker, Patricia Lynch & Associates, Hank Sheinkopf, and Mark Behan Communications on external lobbying between 2007 and 2015 in areas related to “statute of limitations,” “timelines for commencing certain civil actions related to sex offenses,” parochial school funding and investment tax credits. The contract with Wilson Elser was not renewed this year and the church is now paying another prominent firm, Greenberg Traurig, $6,000-a-month.

Cardinal Dolan has compared same-sex marriage to incest, denied LGBT Catholics entry to mass and insisted gay people are entitled to friendship, not marriage.

The church has argued that opening a one-year window to revive old cases could could lead to bankruptcy. Along with the Catholic church, some Orthodox Jewish groups and other private entities have opposed legislation by Assemblywoman Margaret Markey and Senator Brad Hoylman that would eliminate the time limit prohibiting adults bringing civil cases after their 23rd birthdays.

According to NYC Daily News, Melanie Blow, chief operations officer of the Stop Abuse Campaign said “They are willing to spend limitless money in order to basically keep bad guys from being accountable for their actions. I think they’re doing it because they don’t want to have to pay out settlements.”

Kathryn Robb, an advocate and abuse survivor added “If they need to spend that much money on lobbying, clearly, then, they have some pretty big secrets to hide.”

Spokesman Dennis Poust said “the Catholic Conference lobbies on many issues, from assisted suicide to farm worker rights to school choice to criminal justice reform…it is all a matter of public record. We have no further comment beyond that.”
