Suspense, sci-fi and twenty-something queens fill out this week’s home entertainment highlights.

UK gay comedy-drama series Outings (above) follows a group of young gays, a kid with special powers is pursued in sci-fi drama Midnight Special, and Helen Mirren must take out a terrorist in suspenseful chamber drama, Eye In The Sky.

Now for some trailers and details!

Eye In The Sky

($34.98 Blu-ray, $29.98 DVD; Universal)

A trio of high ranking terrorists are finally settled down where a drone can strike them, but ethical, political, and moral issues plus a little girl in the wrong place at the wrong time make for a stickier situation in director Gavin Hood’s tense hot topic drama. Helen Mirren rocks as a British military commander stuck between the bureaucrat and reluctant trigger men, while the late Alan Rickman and Breaking Bad‘s Aaron Paul contribute to the intense, sometimes Hitchcockian proceedings. Extras include a pair of featurettes.

Outings

($24.99 DVD; TLA)

British director/co-writer/co-star Lloyd Eyre-Morgan brings us this three-part dramedy series about a trio of twenty-something gay friends Kane, Tim, and Kiegan. These millennials grapple with their families, friends, and of course lovers both new and ex. A season two is planned, so get prepped with their first outing!

Midnight Special

($29.98 Blu-ray, $28.98 DVD; Warner Bros.)

Director Jeff Nichols (Mud, Take Shelter) pays homage to 80s sci-fi on-the-run films like Starman, Close Encounters Of The Third Kind and E.T. with this tale of a little boy, Alton, from a Mormon-style religious cult compound being pursued by shadowy government agents including an NSA officer played by Adam Driver. Alton’s father, Roy (Michael Shannon), is determined to protect him, but is also puzzled regarding what to do about the boy’s apparent special powers which include emanating an intense glow from his eyes that cause visions in others. Is the boy an alien? A god? All will be answered… A fun, tense, retro ride. Extras include featurettes.
