Activist Openly Confronts Antigay Creep Tony Perkins, And It’s As Awesome As You Hope

Tony Perkins. We’ve all wanted to give him a piece of our mind — and we’ve all wondered what pieces are missing from his. A rabidly antigay zealot, the leader of Family Research Council is a highly vocal opponent of marriage equality who thinks musicals are nothing but homosexual propaganda. He’s also convinced queers will destroy the military by 2034.

Not that his insanity has gone unheeded by the world at large — at least, not lately. Last week, his scheduled appearance to discuss the Orlando massacre on ABC’s “The Week” was abruptly cancelled after viewers complained that he headed a hate group.  And now, activist Angela Peoples of GetEqual has openly confronted Perkins during a press conference at a Donald Trump event, telling him, “You are responsible for hate and lies… a culture that has fueled violence against our community.”

Peoples told Perkins:

What do you have to say for yourself, Tony Perkins? You are responsible – you are responsible for all of this violence. Do you see those 49 people that were murdered in Orlando. You created that environment, sir. What do you have to say for yourself, sir?

“We don’t want your prayers, Tony Perkins. We don’t want your lies. We want you to stop being homophobic, we want you to stop the hate speech.”

All Perkins manages to say in response is a perfectly limp, “You are very disrespectful.”

Oooh, burn.

Zayn Malik Accepts All Lust: ‘If Guys Find Me Attractive…It’s Sick. It’s a Compliment’

zayn

In a new cover story for Paper magazine, former One Direction bandmate Zayn Malik says he’s fine to have “graduated to full-fledged international sex symbol status” as an adult and accepts that fans of all sexual orientations find him attractive:

“If girls find me attractive, then that’s a cool thing,” he says. “If guys find me attractive, then that’s a cool thing as well. It’s sick. It’s a compliment. I’m blessed by whoever was up there to be who I am and be able to do what I do. I genuinely mean that.”

House Votes to Name Post Office after PFLAG Founders

House Votes to Name Post Office after PFLAG Founders

Yesterday, the House of Representatives voted on a bill introduced by Rep. Joe Crowley (D-NY) to designate the United States Postal Service located at 7802 37th Avenue in Jackson Heights, New York, as the “Jeanne and Jules Manford Post Office Building.” Jeanne Manford founded PFLAG, formerly known as Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, to support the parents, family and friends of LGBTQ people. The bill was passed by voice vote and now awaits consideration in the Senate.

The idea for PFLAG began in 1971 when Manford marched with her son in the precursor to New York’s pride parade and participants asked to her to talk to their parents. What started as a small support group meeting of 20 people at the Metropolitan-Duane Methodist Church on March 26 1,973 turned into a national organization in 1981.

While Jeanne died in 2013, her legacy lives on. PFLAG has hundreds of chapters across the U.S. and continues to create safe schools for all, offer scholarships to LGBTQ people and allies and advocate on a number of issues relevant to the LGBTQ community on Capitol Hill.

When PFLAG was first envisioned in 1971, there were no federal laws explicitly protecting LGBTQ people and sex between consenting same-sex adults was illegal in many states. The progress that we have made over the past four and a half decades is a testament to the work PFLAG and many other LGBTQ organizations, including HRC, have done to create a more welcoming and supportive society of LGBTQ people.

HRC is proud to have partnered with PFLAG countless times in the past several decades to support LGBTQ people, their families and friends and looks forward to continuing our work in the years to come.

Roland Emmerich Doubles Down, Says Stonewall Was “A White Event, Let’s Be Honest”

Roland Emmerich Doubles Down, Says Stonewall Was “A White Event, Let’s Be Honest”

Roland Emmerich-Pic

Roland Emmerich appears to have taken all the criticism about his misguided flop Stonewall in stride — either that, or he simply loves a good tongue-lashing. (And that’s definitely a thing.)

How else to explain why, in a new interview with The Guardian to promote Independence Day: Resurgence, Emmerich says, “Stonewall was a white event, let’s be honest.”

Openly taking on accusations that he was “whitewashing” the entire gay rights movement (a petition with over 25,000 signatures claimed, “It is time that black and brown transwomyn and drag queens are recognized for their efforts in the riots”), Emmerich says:

My movie was exactly what they said it wasn’t. It was politically correct. It had black, transgender people in there. We just got killed by one voice on the internet who saw a trailer and said, this is whitewashing Stonewall. Stonewall was a white event, let’s be honest. But nobody wanted to hear that any more.”

The statement hasn’t gone unnoticed, either:

Breaking: idiotic white man whitewashes history for failed film and continues to be smugly ahistorical. More: t.co/bgT3vXTTW7

sunday-mass-kiss-pride

Love is in the air at Sunday Mass.

It’s that time of the year again. Rainbow flags are a’flappin’ down Market Street, more glitter than usual seems to be blowing in the breeze, and you’ve likely just realized you still haven’t finalized your weekend plans. It’s Pride week in San Francisco!

Head over to the GayCities San Francisco Pride Guide to peruse the dizzying array of Pride happenings to your heart’s content.

To make things even easier on you, we put together our top five Queerty picks for the weekend. These are all exceptional stand-out parties that are guaranteed to tickle your fancy, assuming you’re a generally chill person who likes to have fun. Hopefully that’s not too great a leap.

Drumroll please…

1. Best overall pick: Sunday Mass at The Chapel — Sunday, June 26; 8 p.m. – 3 a.m.

sunday-mass-2

We’re going to begin at the end, and only because if you’re only going to one party this Pride, you can’t do better than Sunday Mass. This is the third year the gang is getting together for a pride-stravaganza, and it will be one well-oiled machine of seductive debauchery. They’ve got hedonism down to a science for their most ambitious undertaking yet, as over 40 artists and musicians pitch in to create that magical Pride experience every gayby dreams of. Each room at The Chapel is being transformed into its own interactive art wonderland, the result being a web of pure joy sprinkled with three dance floors, an epic cuddle puddle, body & face painting, tarot reading and virtual reality. Did we mention virtual reality?! While the crowd will skew male, Mass is an inclusive event (as are all the events we’ll feature), so it’s a surefire hit for your whole crew. Save some strength throughout the weekend, you’ll need it. Ticket info here.

2. Best party to avoid a hangover: Pride Nightlife at California Academy of Science — Thursday, June 23; 6 p.m. – 10 p.m.

1_1200x900_trex

So you want to dip your toes in the Pride party punch, but you’re not the type to rage into the night. It’s cool baby, don’t fret. Pride night at the California Academy of Science has your back. Hosted by Juanita More and House of Babes, this Thursday Pride kickoff is the perfect way to see, be seen and make a scene all before the clock strikes midnight and your Uber Black turns into a 1978 Mercury Zephyr. This year there’s a drag tribute to Prince and Bowie, a bit of vogue flavor with the always-on-point Jocquese Whitfield, and of course all the amazing attractions of the museum to keep you awestruck all night. Plus you can still make it home in time to catch up on Orange Is the New Black, and that’s something to be proud of.

3. Best party for babes: House of Babes Big Queer Pride Party at Public Works — Saturday, June 25;  7 p.m. – 3 a.m.

house-of-babes

But seriously, the babes will be out in full force. Who classifies as a “babe?” Anyone and everyone in this gorgeous queer family of ours who believes in themself and wants to spread the love. While all the parties we’re suggesting are inclusive, at this QPOC event you’ll see a truly beautiful mix across gender, sexuality, body type and style. This party is for everyone except haters, and that can mean so many different things. Hip hop, twerk and club beats will keep the crowd going strong, and some very special live performances from NoLa sissy bounce babe Katey Red and NYC-based rapper babe Dai Burger are sure to blow the lid off the place.

4. Best pick for the ones who want it all: Hard French at Mezanine — Sunday, June 26; 3 p.m. – 11 p.m.

hard-french-pride

Perhaps you’ve been to one of the monthly Hard French parties in the Mission? Well this is that, plus so, so, so much more. It’s really two (three?) events in one — an outdoor street party with a similar ’60s soul vibe as the ever-popular monthly iteration (helloo sunshine!), as well as a full indoor club experience featuring some of the best DJ talent from Los Angeles and around The Bay. As if that weren’t enough, these guys went and fully outdid themselves by booking Psychic TV to perform a live set. Yes, that Psychic TV — the influential trans-fronted ’80s/’90s industrial psychedelic rock group famous in part for their intense shows. It’s going to get weird it all the right ways.

5. Best place to dance on a budget: Civic Center — Saturday & Sunday; Noon – 6 p.m.

san-francisco-pride-670x418

The great thing about San Francisco Pride is that unlike many cities, event tickets remain relatively inexpensive. That being said, for anyone who is hard on funds this Pride, don’t think for a second that your dancing ambitions are squashed. Don’t forget that the Civic Center Pride Festival is FREE, as in F-R-E-E, both Saturday and Sunday. There will be multiple dance stages, many incredible performances and people-watching up the wazoo. Help keep it cute! Remember to hydrate, and be aware that security this year will be amped up, so expect to have your bag searched when you enter the event. Other than that, go crazy and have the time of your life.

Tim Tebow Pays Hospital Visit to Former Teammate Injured in Pulse Orlando Shooting

Rodney Sumter, a bartender at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando who was shot three times and had two arms broken during the June 12 massacre which took the lives of 49 people, received a hospital visit from his former high school football teammate, Tim Tebow.

Said Sumter in an Instagram post: “My high school quarterback left the Bahamas to come and see me. Tebow has always been an awesome person.”

The Orlando Sentinel reports:

After Tebow and Sumter competed together at Nease High, Tebow won two national titles and the Heisman Trophy while leading the Florida Gators. Sumter played at Jacksonville  University before eventually moving to Orlando to work as a dancer and bartender.

In addition to meeting with Tebow, Sumter posted a picture of his visit with Orlando City captain Kaká, former MLB star Johnny Damon and Gov. Rick Scott while holding an #OrlandoUnited shirt being sold by local pro sports teams to raise funds for those impacted by the shooting.
