A Beirut-Based Band That Challenges Homophobia

A Beirut-Based Band That Challenges Homophobia

band Mashrou Leila

The Pulse nightclub shooting is still reverberating for members of the indie-rock band Mashrou’ Leila.

The gay-friendly band is based in Beirut, and its music explores topics that are taboo in much of the Middle East.

Its lead singer is openly gay.

And the band just happens to be in the middle of its US summer tour.

At a sold-out concert in Washington, DC on Monday, band members spoke to fans about the Orlando shooting.

“We spoke very earnestly about the difficulty for us as a band that has fought and struggled really hard for the things we believe in, in our music and in our lyrics,” says guitarist and keyboardist Firas Abou Fakher. “Being from the Arab world, and being a very LGBTQ-friendly band, we were kind of on both ends of spectrum … and we found ourselves in a state where you know we’re not allowed to belong to either.”

Mashrou’ Leila applauded the bravery of fans who turned out for their show on Monday.

“Having a sold-out show in such circumstances meant so much to us,” Abou Fakher says. “I’m not gonna lie, we’ve had these moments of paranoia … but going and playing the show and having people come to the show is the most powerful act of resistance we still have.”

Mashrou’ Leila’s lyrics challenge powerful traditions. The song “Shim el-Yasmine” describes their lead singer’s longing to introduce his male lover to his parents.

“In the English language you can refer to something and not decide its gender. In the Arabic language that’s impossible. So that was a song about finding where that line of ambiguity is in lyrics and words of the song to figure out how we can play with it,” Abou Fakher explains.

He says “Shim el-Yasmine” also inverts gender stereotypes.

“In the Middle East there’s this very typical machismo, this thread of thinking that the male, the alpha male, the provider brings food to the table. The woman is a housewife, she’s cooking she’s cleaning,” he says. “This song has completely inverted that and Hamed [the lead singer] is basically saying he wants to be this housewife, this person who’s a caregiver, this is a privilege for him.”

Mashrou’ Leila is scheduled to perform a free concert in downtown Los Angeles on Friday.

Abou Fakher says band members have asked for added security at the event.

Mississippi's anti-LGBT law #HB1523 challenged in court

Mississippi's anti-LGBT law #HB1523 challenged in court

Campaign for Southern Equality

This morning in Jackson, Mississippi, the Campaign for Southern Equality began the appeals process against Mississippi’s discriminatory HB 1523 bill

Earlier this year, the Mississippi Congress passed HB 1523, also known as the Religious Liberty Accommodations Act. Mississippi’s discriminatory House Bill 1523, a so-called “religious freedom” bill has many harmful implications for the LGBT community in Mississippi, including denial of psychological, housing, and medical services based on gender identity and sexual orientation, along with allowing for employment discrimination based upon these factors. Many have criticized HB 1523, including celebrities, advocates and politicians. Despite calls from around the country to veto the bill, Governor Bryant signed HB 1523 into law early April. Campaign for Southern Equality v. Bryant hopes to deem the controversial bill unconstitutional.

HB 1523 is set to go into effect on July 1.

GLAAD has been speaking out against discriminatory laws in several states. GLAAD’s resource, “Debunking the ‘Bathroom Bills Myth‘” is a valuable resource for journalists and everyday people to understand the importance and impact of nondiscrimination bills, and ways to debunk falsehoods that often are raised in opposition to such bills. GLAAD is calling on media, both in Mississippi and nationally, to ask media to hold promoters of such discriminatory bills as HB 1523 accountable for false claims they have made.

LGBT advocates and media figures can also find background information about the LGBT community in Mississippi through GLAAD’s guidebook on the state.

This Dad Won’t Touch HIs Naked Son “Because It’s Gay”

This Dad Won’t Touch HIs Naked Son “Because It’s Gay”

Finding herself in an absurd, entirely unsavory predicament, a young mother is asking the Internet for advice. In what could simply be a crafty attempt to never clean up a dirty diaper, her husband has proven unwilling to touch their son’s private parts because, in his eyes, that’s really “gay.”

“I’ve been married to my husband for three years,” she writes on Reddit, “but we’ve been dating for two years before that. He’s honestly the best person I’ve ever met.”

Well, apparently she needs to get out of the house more often. While her hubby was “very happy” to hear she was expecting, and they were “super excited” to discover they were having a boy, things took a turn for the dismal when she started boning up on baby books:

I’ve been reading about diaper rash and how important it is to change the diaper and clean the baby as soon as possible.

“I told my husband that when the baby comes he needs to use baby wipes on the groin and butt as a precaution since it can be pretty bad.

“He stopped me and said that I would be changing all of the diapers, that he doesn’t want to touch anything because it’s gay and that it’s my responsibility.”

She’s understandably shocked and confused by this reaction: “Our baby is our son, we need to take care of him.”

As Pink News reports, Reddit users have been quick to voice their opinions on the matter.

“Touching his son is gay,” one writes. “Does that mean he would help if it were a girl? How creepy is that?”

“But I am kinda suspecting that he’s expecting you to do all the child rearing and this is an excuse, not an argument.”

No word yet on whether he feels comfortable playing the occasional round of peek-a-boo, or whether that’s also too gay.
