Donald Trump Says He’d Be Better for the LGBT Community Than Hillary Clinton

Donald Trump Says He’d Be Better for the LGBT Community Than Hillary Clinton

kimmel_trump

Donald Trump on Tuesday took to his favorite medium, Twitter, to insist that he would be a better president for the LGBT community than Hillary Clinton if elected.

Tweeted Trump, “Thank you to the LGBT community! I will fight for you while Hillary brings in more people that will threaten your freedoms and beliefs.” It’s not clear what Trump was thanking the LGBT community for.

Thank you to the LGBT community! I will fight for you while Hillary brings in more people that will threaten your freedoms and beliefs.

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 14, 2016

Trump is seemingly doubling down on his claims made yesterday that he is a friend to the LGBT community, a claim he made while politicizing the Orlando tragedy in disgusting fashion.

Watch video of Trump’s Twitter page as it floods with animated rainbow balloons, below.

For those looking to help the victims and their families, as well as lift up your LGBTQ loved ones during this time, HRC has highlighted four ways to come together to show your support. You may also support the victims and their families by donating to Equality Florida’s Go Fund Me page.

A LOOK AT THEIR STORIES: The Orlando Sentinel is honoring the memory of each of the victims by recounting stories from friends, coworkers and loved ones. Two of these stories — of Angel Luis Candelario-Padro and Jonathan Camuy — celebrate the drive of two people who had recently moved to Orlando to pursue their passions. The Florida publication also lifted up the story of Brenda Lee Marquez McCool, a two-time cancer survivor, who went out to Pulse’s Latin night to dance with her son, a survivor of the attack… In a heartbreaking account, TIME shared the story of partners Juan Ramon Guerrero and Christopher “Drew” Leinonen, victims of the attack who planned to get married but will now have a joint funeral instead… HRC and BuzzFeed also hail the heroes who stayed behind at Pulse to save the lives of countless survivors of the attack. These are just a few of the stories that, even in this time of immense grief, are reminding us all of our common humanity. Read and share.

While LGBTQ Community Mourns, NC Anti-Equality Activists Lobby General Assembly in Support of HB2

While LGBTQ Community Mourns, NC Anti-Equality Activists Lobby General Assembly in Support of HB2

Today, HRC and Equality NC issued the following statements in response to news that only two days after the deadly attack in Orlando targeting LGBTQ people — almost all Latinx — anti-equality activists in North Carolina are lobbying the General Assembly and held a press conference in an attempt to keep lawmakers from repealing the deeply discriminatory, anti-LGBTQ HB2 law. Yesterday, the editorial board of the Raleigh News & Observer wrote, “Now, after the tragedy in Orlando, HB2 looks even more like a gratuitous, cruel slap at gays, lesbians and transgender people. It is all the more embarrassing to North Carolina than it was – and it was plenty embarrassing.”

“Have they no shame?  Have they no empathy? It is unconscionable that as the nation mourns the 49 victims of the horrific massacre in Orlando, anti-equality activists in North Carolina are urging lawmakers to support one of the most extreme anti-LGBTQ laws in the country,” said JoDee Winterhof, HRC Senior Vice President for Policy and Political Affairs. “The so-called NC Values Coalition is showing its true colors today. Their callous disregard for the victims and loved ones devastated by this heartbreaking tragedy is disgusting and indefensible. Only a deep-seated hatred could drive a decision to attack a community while it is in mourning.”

“The LGBTQ community has been in shock over the terrible tragedy in Orlando where 49 innocent people were killed in one of the few places they felt safe. Now a few days later, the NC Values Coalition reminds LGBTQ North Carolinians that the deeply discriminatory HB2, one of the worst anti-LGBTQ laws in the nation, needs to stay on the books,” said Chris Sgro, Executive Director of Equality NC. “In an unfathomable decision to keep a news conference in support of the hateful law, the group has made it very clear that they have little respect for a community in mourning. The rhetoric perpetrated by the NC Values Coalition and codified in law by HB2 sets a dangerous reasoning to justify any discriminatory action taken against the LGBTQ community. Today was not the day to hold a news conference in support of an anti-LGBTQ law. Today is the day to honor those that we have lost and protect the ones most vulnerable by working towards a full repeal of HB2.”

HB 2 has eliminated existing municipal non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people and prevents such protections from being passed by cities in the future. In addition, the legislation prevents transgender students in public schools from using restrooms and other facilities consistent with their gender identity. It also compels the same type of discrimination against transgender people to take place in publicly-owned buildings, including in public universities, major airports, and convention centers. Further, HB 2 revokes the ability to sue under state employment non-discrimination law on the basis of any protected characteristic, including race, religion, national origin, and sex.

Online Vigil: Share Your Love and Condolences

Online Vigil: Share Your Love and Condolences

HRC has created an Online Vigil for the victims and survivors of the tragic Orlando attack. Here, members of the LGBTQ community and allies can send a message of comfort, solidarity, or heartbreak so we can heal – together.

Whether you’re in Florida or anywhere in the world, you can share your message of support and solidarity for those affected in this online space. Always remember, our community is stronger when we join together, hand in hand.

Honor each one of the 49 we lost and those still fighting for their lives. Wherever you are, your message of love and remembrance can be heard by participating in a special online vigil we’ve created.

Write your words, leave your name, and continue to stand strong against hate and violence. Let us use this platform to remind ourselves what we already know to be true: love will conquer hate.

June will forever be marked by this tragedy. But, before this hateful act marred it, June was designated as National LGBTQ Pride Month. If there ever was a time to unite and show our pride – this is it.

Send your message at www.hrc.org/weareorlando.

GLAAD responds to reports speculating about Orlando gunman's sexual orientation

GLAAD responds to reports speculating about Orlando gunman's sexual orientation

GLAAD

GLAAD today responded to reports speculating about the Orlando gunman’s sexual orientation following witness accounts that he may have used gay dating apps and may have previously visited Pulse nightclub.

“Forty-nine innocent people were brutally massacred in an LGBT space – this we know for certain,” said GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. “This atrocity was an attack on the LGBT community, it was an attack on our country, and it was an attack on the core American values of equality and freedom for everyone. Whether the gunman’s homophobia spurred from hatred of others or hatred of himself, this is homophobia all the same. And it’s sadly just the latest example of homophobia turning to horrific violence, just as it has for decades.”

Ellis continued, “This hatred for the LGBT community is something that the gunman learned right here at home, not outside our borders. This is the same hatred that led to the murders of over a dozen transgender Americans this year, most of them women of color. This is the same hatred that’s been espoused by American lawmakers who have proposed over 100 anti-LGBT bills this year. And this is the same hatred that we all must come together to end once and for all. Acceptance must prevail.”
