Brian May to Donald Trump: Don’t Use Queen’s Music

Brian May to Donald Trump: Don’t Use Queen’s Music

brianmay

The Rolling Stones, Adele, Neil Young, Aerosmith and R.E.M. all had the same message for Donald Trump when he tried to use their music in his presidential campaign: oh, hell, no!

And now Brian May has joined the elite group.

Responding to a letter from a fan posted on his website after the GOP presumptive nominee played “We are the Champions” before his speech on Tuesday, Queen’s legendary guitarist Brian May was categoric: “We certainly have not approved this use of WATC – I will make sure we take what steps we can to dissociate ourselves from Donald Trump’s unsavory campaign.”

He later posted a note saying he had received “an avalanche of complaints” from his fans. “I can confirm that permission to use the track was neither sought nor given,” he added.

Here’s May’s reaction in full:

I’ve had an avalanche of complaints – some of which you can see in our ‘LETTERS’ page – about Donald Trump using our We Are The Champions track as his ‘theme’ song on USA TV. This is not an official Queen statement, but I can confirm that permission to use the track was neither sought nor given. We are taking advice on what steps we can take to ensure this use does not continue. Regardless of our views on Mr Trump’s platform, it has always been against our policy to allow Queen music to be used as a political campaigning tool. Our music embodies our own dreams and beliefs, but it is for all who care to listen and enjoy.

Of course, drama between musicians and Republicans is hardly a rare phenomenon, and the list of examples is rather long, but here are a few that we think you might like:

Tom Petty was not happy when George W. Bush used “I Won’t Back Down” on his 2000 campaign. Twisted Sister blasted Paul Ryan for his use of “We’re Not Gonna Take it” in 2012. Also in 2012, Newt Gingrich’s use of Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger” ended in court. (Last year the group also condemned Mike Huckabee when he used the same song during the Kim Davis’ release spectacle.) Katrina and the Waves objected to Michelle Bachmann playing their hit “Walking on Sunshine” in 2011. Even ABBA complained when John McCain used “Take a Chance on Me” in 2008.

And here’s a pretty harsh one:

@ScottWalker @GovWalker please stop using our music in any way…we literally hate you !!!
Love, Dropkick Murphys

Gay Mullah Who Conducted Same-Sex Weddings Flees Iran Because of Death Threats: VIDEO

Gay Mullah Who Conducted Same-Sex Weddings Flees Iran Because of Death Threats: VIDEO

Gay Mullah Flees Iran

A gay mullah known only as Taha says he was forced to flee Iran after receiving death threats for marrying same-sex couples.

Homosexuality is illegal in Iran and punishable by imprisonment, torture or execution.

Now living in Istanbul, Turkey, Taha told the BBC his sexual orientation was exposed when he started officiating same-sex marriages.

Via The Independent:

With homosexuality taboo in Iran, Taha, the gay mullah, attempted to keep his sexual orientation hidden, but was exposed after he began conducting gay weddings.

Speaking to the BBC, Taha said: “Yes, I conducted gay weddings. The last few months were very difficult. The authorities questioned me several times about my choice of friends.

“They were saying I am a cleric and I shouldn’t be meeting gay men. The other mullahs were suspicious about my sexual orientation and threatened me with death.”

The BBC’s Ali Hamedani also spoke with two Iranian gay refugees, one of whom explains how mullahs “prayed at our execution ceremonies” but he now hopes Taha will perform his wedding ceremony.

The news drew a variety of comments on social media. One user wrote, “He is kidding, there are no gays here. Man up.” Another tweeted, “Is he too Gay to be mullah and too mullah to be a gay refugee in Canada? Taha the good man.”

The Bar Has Been Raised For Over-The-Top Gay Wedding Proposals

The Bar Has Been Raised For Over-The-Top Gay Wedding Proposals

proposal-video-deandre-upshaw

We’ve seen Harry Potter magic, Eurovision-style flare and uniformed glory all feature into fabulous gay wedding proposals, but this, folks, is the new score to beat.

It’s safe to say DeAndre Upshaw was certain about his decision to pop the question to longtime boyfriend, Stu, because with the amount of planning his next-level proposal must have taken, he surely had opportunity to question his motives.

Upshaw, a video producer from Dallas, shared the impressive feat on YouTube, effectively raising the bar for fans of elaborate surprise proposals.

According to Upshaw, the production included:

  • A grand total of four costume changes on my end
  • Marching Band uniforms purchased in bulk on Craigslist
  • Shiny rainbow choir robes direct from eBay
  • Confetti Cannons
  • A dance troupe
  • Flag twirlers
  • Ribbon Dancing
  • And over forty of our closest friends in family

President Obama Officially Endorses Hillary Clinton: WATCH

President Obama Officially Endorses Hillary Clinton: WATCH

obama endorses hillary

President Obama has officially endorsed Hillary Clinton for president.

Obama made his announcement in a YouTube video posted to Hillary Clinton’s account on Thursday.

NBC News reports:

“I know how hard this job can be. That’s why I know Hillary will be so good at it. In fact, I don’t think there’s ever been someone so qualified to hold this office,” he says in the video, which was tweeted by Clinton’s official Twitter account.

“I have seen her judgment, I have seen her toughness, I have seen her commitment to our values up close,” he said of his former Democratic rival and first secretary of state.

Obama and Clinton will appear together in their first joint campaign trip together next Wednesday in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Clinton’s campaign said.

The endorsement came just hours after Obama held a meeting at the White House with Clinton rival Bernie Sanders, who told reporters after the summit that he will remain in the race through the District of Columbia primary next week but indicated that he will meet with Clinton soon “to see how we can work together to defeat Donald Trump and to create a government which represents all of us and not just the one percent.”

Obama just endorsed Crooked Hillary. He wants four more years of Obama—but nobody else does!

Advocates in Sri Lanka continue pride promotions despite threats

Advocates in Sri Lanka continue pride promotions despite threats

EQUAL GROUND

LGBT advocates and allies with EQUAL GROUND in Sri Lanka refused to allow threats of violence stop them from showing their pride.

On May 28, the organization was supposed to take a stall at the popular Good Market in Colombo to begin publicizing and raising excitement for Colombo PRIDE 2016. After receiving extremist threats, the Good Market refused to allow EQUAL GROUND to have a stall. In an attempt to protect themselves from the actions of extremists, the Good Market offered the organization a stall at the Entertainment Center, only if they did not advertise their name or Colombo PRIDE.

Instead of allowing EQUAL GROUND to accept this situation, allies at Butter Boutique, which previously held a stall at Good Market, allowed EQUAL GROUND to setup a pop up in their parking lot. Local police also showed support by having four police officers present all day as protection in case of violence.

The event was incredibly successful, and members of EQUAL GROUND filmed the video below to highlight the success, as well as personal testimonies of advocates and allies.

In the video, Rosanna Flamer-Caldera of EQUAL GROUND asks the owner of Butter Boutique, Roxy, why she felt so compelled to allow EQUAL GROUND to set up on their property, despite the threats of violence the store was getting. “Because it’s the right thing to do, it is basic human rights,” Roxy responded. “When you know something’s right, there is a part of you that needs to get involved with it. It doesn’t matter, they can taunt us, they can threaten us, they can try to shut us down, but when it’s the right thing to do, you should do it and you have to do it.”

EQUAL GROUND is a non-profit organization that fights for the human and political rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and questioning community in Sri Lanka. It is commited to creating a safer space for LGBTIQ and offering them better opportunities for self help.

Colombo PRIDE officially kicks off tomorrow, June 10, and the celebration will continue until June 18. A full schedule can be seen below.
