Bernie SandersRUSH TO JUDGMENT. Bernie Sanders spokesman speaks out after mainstream news media declares Clinton the “presumptive nominee“: “It is unfortunate that the media, in a rush to judgment, are ignoring the Democratic National Committee’s clear statement that it is wrong to count the votes of superdelegates before they actually vote at the convention this summer. Secretary Clinton does not have and will not have the requisite number of pledged delegates to secure the nomination. She will be dependent on superdelegates who do not vote until July 25 and who can change their minds between now and then. They include more than 400 superdelegates who endorsed Secretary Clinton 10 months before the first caucuses and primaries and long before any other candidate was in the race.”

Hillary ClintonFIVETHIRTYEIGHT. Hillary Clinton will be nominated because more Democrats are voting for her. “Sanders’s statement — and the AP’s call — distract from the larger point. Clinton will be the Democratic nominee because substantially more Democrats have voted for her. In addition to her elected delegate majority, she’s received approximately 13.5 million votes so far in primaries and caucuses, compared with 10.5 million for Sanders.”

kimmel_trump2016 ELECTION. Donald Trump doubles down on racist attacks against judge: “An embattled Donald Trump urgently rallied his most visible supporters to defend his attacks on a federal judge’s Mexican ancestry during a conference call on Monday in which he ordered them to question the judge’s credibility and impugn reporters as racists. ‘We will overcome,’ Trump said, according to two supporters who were on the call and requested anonymity to share their notes with Bloomberg Politics. ‘And I’ve always won and I’m going to continue to win. And that’s the way it is.’”

MIC. Meet the gay voters backing Donald Trump. “More affluent voters are more likely to vote Republican, and should Trump lead a deescalation of the right’s culture war on LGBTQ issues, many well-to-do gays — to say nothing of non-gays turned off by the party’s social conservatism — may give the GOP a second look.”

DRAG KING. Meryl Streep does Donald Trump. “The three-time Oscar-winning actress took the stage in her Trump getup alongside her Mamma Mia! costar Christine Baranski, who was dressed as Hillary Clinton, at the annual Shakespeare in the Park Public Theater Gala event at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park.”

Dallas Suburb Rejects Hate Group’s Bathroom Lie, Adds LGBT Protections

Dallas Suburb Rejects Hate Group’s Bathroom Lie, Adds LGBT Protections

gay marriages in texas

The City Council in the Dallas suburb of Mesquite, Texas, voted to add LGBT workers to the city’s Equal Employment Opportunity Policy on Monday night, despite strong opposition from the hate group Texas Values.

In a news release earlier Monday, Texas Values President Jonathan Saenz (above) alleged that the proposed policy amounted to the city starting “a bathroom war.”

“This dangerous ordinance forces every woman and girl in the City of Mesquite to be put in an uncomfortable and dangerous situation every time they use the restroom, shower, or locker room on city property,” Saenz wrote.

Before the vote, council members forcefully rejected Saenz’s argument.

“Sorry to disappoint everyone, this isn’t the bathroom war…no matter what a political hack from Austin tells you in a fundraising email,” Councilman Jeff Casper said. “Let me be clear: This policy has no effect on public restrooms. It simply states that the city of Mesquite’s employment decisions will be based on character and merit.”

More than 20 speakers who addressed the council during public comments were evenly divided on the proposed EEO policy.

“This obsession with bathrooms is not something that I understand,” said former Democratic state Rep. Harryette Ehrhardt, a pioneering LGBT ally. “It’s never been a really important thing in our family, and I don’t know what the obsession about it is. Maybe it’s because by espousing hatred and fear they can become more powerful.”

Passage of the Mesquite policy marked the third consecutive defeat for Texas Values and other anti-LGBT groups, in the wake of voters’ decision to repeal Houston’s Equal Rights Ordinance in November. This spring, the Dallas suburb of Rockwall resoundingly rejected an anti-trans bathroom ordinance, and the Fort Worth school district enacted progressive new guidelines for dealing with trans students.

Distraught Man Says He’s ‘Almost Over’ His Ex, But Still Jealous Of His Past Relationships

Distraught Man Says He’s ‘Almost Over’ His Ex, But Still Jealous Of His Past Relationships

Is the such thing as a pioneer of self-hatred? Because journalist Michael Lee of Elite Daily might fit the bill.

His recent column — graced with the Morrissey-esque title “I’m Almost Over My Ex, But I Still Feel Jealous Of His Past Relationships” — is a staggering tale of “possessiveness, envy, and mistrust.”

Related: Adult Film Actor’s Beloved Chihuahua Publicly Stabbed To Death By Jealous Boyfriend

Writing of his ex-boyfriend in the purplest of prose — “I loved, I suffered and now I hate” — Lee confesses that he was — and still is — “aggressively jealous of my now ex-boyfriend’s past encounters with his former lovers and flames, even though he is no longer here to hold my hand.”

I’ve heard of being jealous and dubious of a current partner’s exes. Feeling threatened and jeopardized of a partner’s past is a natural feeling, after all. But why am I jealous of my ex’s past? Was it that I never felt good enough when he was in my present? Why am I still letting his past affect my present? Did his past exes have such a profound effect on me that, even after he is gone, I am still left here alone, lingering with jealousy?”

We’ve never considered obsessing over an ex’s past relationships — and frankly, we’re a little disappointed in ourselves. (Next time!)

Related: Just How Many Gay Men Are In Open Relationships? These New Stats May Surprise You (Or Not)

Lee’s disappointed in himself as well:

The problem was, I asked too many questions. I wanted to know my ex-boyfriend’s lover’s names, how they met, what they looked like and — most agonizing of all — what they had done together in bed. My curiosity got the best of me, and even through it killed me a little inside, I still was left wanting to know more. It’s gotten to the point where when I see someone who even half-resembles one of his exes (or what I visualize them to look like), I become paralyzed in my own self-doubt and fear. I’ve put them so high on a pedestal that I will never be able to compare to them.”

This sounds a bit disingenuous. Isn’t jealousy often a subconscious maneuver to push partners away without hurting their feelings? (If not an outright admission that you’re cheating or considering cheating?)

Reading through the story, we suspect the writer deliberately wrote this piece so his ex-boyfriend will find it online and take pity upon him– it’s a desperate plea for sympathy writ large. To his mind, perhaps it’s just the latest move in a delicious game…?

It’s taken me a lot longer to get over him than I initially imagined, but who would have thought that my ex-boyfriend’s past would be the reason I still find myself belittled and grasped with begrudging jealously and pulse-racing envy?

What is it about his past that still leaves me feeling numb? And when will I be able to run away from all the things he has done?”

What do you think? Has this guy taken romantic jealousy to terrifying new lows, or can you sympathize with this particularly feral green-eyed monster? Weigh in in the comments below.

6 Breakthrough Advertising Campaigns That Promote Coming Out Across The Globe

6 Breakthrough Advertising Campaigns That Promote Coming Out Across The Globe

Nissan takes an unusual approach to humor with its new commercial in which a young man “comes out” — as the owner of an Infiniti to his conservative, Mercedes-loving father.

“You must have always known I was a little…different,” the son asks. “Not this different,” the father dismissively replies.

The Infinity ad has been heralded as groundbreaking but also questioned by critics who ask whether the spot trivializes real challenges of coming out to parents by equating it with with a luxury car purchase.

Coming-out as a theme or metaphor in commercials is relatively new to the U.S. market, but it has been used as an attention-grabbing devise in other markets as far back as 2001, including, most recently, this spring by McDonald’s McCafe in Taiwan, the first Asian country poised to legalize same-sex marriage.

Here are 6 ads exploring coming-out themes:

1. McDonald’s McCafe, Taiwan

A young man sits across from his dad, just after he has come out to his him by writing “I like guys” on his coffee cup. The father, overcome with emotion, gets up and walks away for a few minutes while the young man sits alone.

When the father returns with his own coffee, he picks up his son’s pen and updates the cup’s message: “I *accept that you* like guys.”

Son nearly cries while  dad smiles with acceptance.

2. Findus, Italy

In another accepting ]coming out ad – this time including a boyfriend — Iglo Group’s  Findus brand in 2014 showed a young man hosting a meal for his mother at home. After impressing her with his microwave frozen-food cooking skills (!), he reveals: “Mom, there is another little surprise: Gianni isn’t only my flatmate, he’s my boyfriend.”

“My darling, I already got that,” she replies warmly.

3. Vodafone, UK

Going back a decade in the UK, Vodafone created a short ad with a young man who comes out by cell phone without any small talk, “Dad, I’m gay.”

Instantly, his dad replies “Excellent” and hangs up without pause.

Vodafone

4. Radio Donna, Belgium

Radio Donna, Flemish radio and TV in Belgium, developed an ad with a flashier coming out in 2004. A young man sits at the dinner table alone, with his mother and father in the living room behind him, reading. There is no sound but the clock ticking, then the man walks over to his parents, unzips his track jacket, and belts out a Broadway-style song and dance:

“Dear mommy and daddy, you might not be ready, but I’m overcome with joy. It may be hard to swallow, but I’m in love with a boy!” Now in a tight gray tank top, he sways provocatively, sounding a lot like a song from the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Two “back up” lip-synch singer/dancers, a man in a leather outfit, and another guy, perform the part of two women singing, “It’s okay, he’s only gay!”

The parents’ heads bop to the music of their son’s coming out song as their son continues, leaning waist level with the leather dude: “This man in leather brings me in the mood, tight pants, wow they fit so good! I guess you better respect my choice – I’m in love with a boy!”

5. Earl’s Restaurant – Canada

Canadian restaurant Earl’s had a more sedate approach in 2002.

A white family sitting in a restaurant waits for their food as their effeminate son begins an important announcement, with a young black man (obviously his boyfriend) sitting next to him.

“Mom, dad, everyone — I have something to tell you all. Now, this may not be easy for you. But I know you all just want me to be happy. You may have already guessed it…But I’m…” and then dinner arrives and everyone focuses on the food, forgetting what he had to say. Even the young man gives up to eat.

Earl's

6. Pepsi, Canada

A year earlier, Pepsi Canada used a stereotypical sissy in a shocking pink jacket and a blond wig, lisping through a press conference. As he tests the microphone, he says, “One, two, ouch!”

“I am here today to tell you a secret. I have been keeping it inside for years. But I can’t stand it anymore, I must tell someone. So here goes, I am telling you publicly: I am bi! Yes, yes, bi. I love both Pepsi and Diet Pepsi. I know there are millions who are like me but refuse to admit it. To them I say: ‘Cheers, sweeties!’ Vive la différence!”

As he kisses both bottles, “Here you, here you. It feels good to spill one’s guts! Bravo! Thank you!”

Pepsi

Stephen Colbert Explains Why Louie Gohmert’s Plan to Ban Gay People in Space is So Flawed: WATCH

Stephen Colbert Explains Why Louie Gohmert’s Plan to Ban Gay People in Space is So Flawed: WATCH

Stephen Colbert Louie Gohmert

As you may have seen, Congressman Louie Gohmert (R-TX) last week argued that spending time and resources fighting for equal rights for LGBT people is a waste of time because humanity would never choose same-sex couples to populate a space colony should there come a time when we had to abandon Earth.

RELATED: Texas Congressman: No ‘Perverse’ Gays Will Be Chosen for Space Colonies – WATCH

Colbert explains, to his audience’s delight, why Gohmert’s argument is so very flawed:

“There were actually only 8 people on Noah’s Ark, and they repopulated the entire world, which means, by his own logic, the remaining 32 people on Louie Gohmert’s space ark could be gay gay gay….And, if that happened, only two years after it launched that spaceship would be the most expensive neighborhood in the galaxy.”

Colbert added: “By the way, I don’t even know why we’re making this distinction because after six months on a spaceship, everybody’s gay….Have you seen the movie The Fifth Element?”

Sean Hayes Performs ‘An Act of God’ on Broadway: REVIEW

Sean Hayes Performs ‘An Act of God’ on Broadway: REVIEW

Sean Hayes Act of God

When it first premiered on Broadway last June, David Javerbaum’s winking satire of the Judeo-Christian enterprise felt as pedantic as it did cliché. Jim Parsons’ turn as a smug, self-satisfied man upstairs was neither likable nor particularly funny and made An Act of God’s 90 minutes drag like Sunday school with a teacher who uses humor to seem “hip.” (Parsons’ defining role on cult nerd series The Big Bang Theory may have colored with this approach.)

act of god sean2In a return engagement of director Joe Mantello’s production, which opened last night at the Booth Theatre, Sean Hayes accomplishes what seems like a divine feat: transforming what previously felt like a bloated late-night sketch into an enjoyable vehicle for his distinct and mighty talents. No, Hayes isn’t serving up God as Jack McFarland (you may hold your “Just Jesus!” jokes), but the actor has always shared a relatable, witty charm with his Will & Grace character. He also knows how to command a stage, particularly useful given the role.

Since the show was last in New York (Hayes also performed it in L.A. and San Francisco), Javerbaum has updated the script, adding in requisite jokes about Twitter trending topics like Donald Trump, Bill Cosby, and Hamilton. (The show is based in part on Javerbaum’s Twitter feed @TheTweetOfGod and on his book The Last Testament: A Memoir by God.) But its bones are the same: God has come to Broadway, using Sean Hayes as a vehicle (so meta!) to tell the world we’ve been getting it all wrong and set us straight with his “new” 10 commandments.

act of god sean3

The structural device of a top 10 list hasn’t grown any more inspired, but in Hayes’ hands, it feels remarkably less tedious. (A more intimate setting definitely helps; the production made the larger Studio 54 feel like a mega church — who wouldn’t be counting down the minutes?) As Hayes rattles off the new directives, veering this way and that to revise details of classic Bible stories, his humor is never without teeth or less than perfectly timed.

act of god sean1

Rather than presenting an absurd caricature that the audience will inevitably dislike, Hayes actually builds a real character. If we can’t exactly empathize with him, at least he seems like some sort of emotional being — a God in the image of man — a nuance that makes us think more deeply about what is being said. In his conflict with the angel Gabriel (here played by David Josefsberg), Hayes’ wrath feels rooted rather than put on. He also manages to mine a gimmick-heavy script for emotional moments that actually resonate, then flip seamlessly into delivering a punch line.

While it still drags at times, this resurrection of the celestial comedy is decidedly more entertaining with Hayes leading the charge — less like a joke-addled, liberal diatribe (i.e. a Twitter feed) and more like a show you’d actually pay to see.
