The drear and drudgery of grocery shopping is its own kind of hell, but not when three young dancers from Oregon are diligently crossing items off their list.

This week, they staged a full-fledged, in-your-face vogue battle in the aisles of their local grocery. The video footage will have you looking at Hersey Syrup in a whole different way.

Join fierce what-have-yous Brandon Harrison, Tracey Wong and Daniel Girón as they kick and kiki their way through the store, using run-of-the-mill kitchen staples like yams, honey and chicken breast to cook up a severely original freestyle routine.

Virginia School Board Requests Stay of Transgender Bathroom Ruling Pending SCOTUS Review

Virginia School Board Requests Stay of Transgender Bathroom Ruling Pending SCOTUS Review

gavin grimm

The school board of Gloucester County, Virginia has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to stay a ruling from the 4th Circuit that declared transgender students must be allowed to use school bathrooms that match their gender identity.

— Mike Valerio (@MikeNBC12) June 7, 2016

BuzzFeed reports:

On Tuesday, lawyers for the school board wrote in a filing at the 4th Circuit, “The School Board intends to file a petition for writ of certiorari with the United States Supreme Court within ninety (90) days of this Court’s entry of judgment.”

As such, the lawyers are asking the appeals court to put its ruling on hold while the petition to the Supreme Court is pending. A stay would keep the case on hold — and the Gloucester County School Board’s policy in place — while the Supreme Court decides whether to hear the case.

The filing notes that the ACLU opposes the stay request.

The ruling from the 4th Circuit in question dates back to April of this year. The court found that in denying transgender student Gavin Grimm (top) access to a bathroom that matches his gender identity the Gloucester County school board violated Title IX of the Education Act of 1972, which bans discrimination based on sex.

Right Wing Hate Group: Stop Having Gay Sex and You Won’t Get AIDS – VIDEO

Right Wing Hate Group: Stop Having Gay Sex and You Won’t Get AIDS – VIDEO

Tim Wildmon

Members of hate group the American Family Association (AFA) are saying that gay people should stop having gay sex to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS so that way funding doesn’t have to go to HIV/AIDS research.

AFA’s president, Tim Wildmon (above center), executive vice president, Ed Vitagliano (above right) and Abe Hamilton (above left), a public policy analyst, made the comments while discussing President Obama’s proclamation commemorating LGBT pride month.

According to Right Wing Watch, Wildmon said:

“You know, one of the real ironies of this proclamation is the president here cites the need for more funding for HIV/AIDS. But, unlike Michelle Obama, who advocates that children stay off the sodas, he doesn’t advocate behavior change when it comes to homosexual behavior affecting your health. Abe, why doesn’t he say, ‘Stop doing what you’re doing and you won’t get AIDS’?”

RELATED: Watch: Liberty Counsel Wingnut Matt Barber and AFA’s Tim Wildmon Discuss Favorite Topic — Military Men in Showers

In the video, Hamilton responds:

“I think once again you highlight one of the glaring episodes of hypocrisy that comes from secular progressivism as applied to public policy. In terms of other health areas, well, you need to get exercise, you need to cut the sugars, you need to not eat sodas, but in terms of homosexuality, there’s no adjustment needed in your behavior, we just need to pour more money into treating the results of the behavior. Even though it’s very provable that engaging in homosexual activity is dangerous to your health, in the same way that smoking is, or sugar, too much sugar, or anything of that nature.”

Simply because two men engage in sexual deviancy doesn’t mean they should be a protected class or have special privileges!

— American Family Assc (@AmericanFamAssc) June 3, 2016

Not to be outdone, Vitagliano took umbrage at Obama urging Congress to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act because “the only [people] I know that are getting fired in this country in 2016 are Christians because they oppose that proclamation and the ideas behind it.”

Selena Gomez Won’t Cancel North Carolina Gig, Will Donate Part of Proceeds to Equality NC – VIDEO

Selena_Gomez_-_Walmart_Soundcheck_Concert

Selena Gomez plans to donate part of the proceeds of an upcoming North Carolina gig to Equality North Carolina rather than cancel the performance.

Artists including Maroon 5, Bruce Springsteen, Nick Jonas and Demi Lovato have all recently cancelled performances in North Carolina in protest of the state’s heinous anti-trans HB2 law.

In a statement, Gomez said:

“I am very fortunate to have grown up in a home where I learned from an early age that everyone should be treated equally. I went back and forth on whether I should cancel my concert in North Carolina and ultimately I think what is right for me is to move forward with my show and donate a portion of the proceeds to Equality North Carolina and their effort to defeat this act of discrimination.

“I’ve been reassured the venue I will be performing in has gender neutral bathrooms as I want everyone coming to my show to be welcomed.  I feel like my generation is the most progressive one yet and believe there will be a day soon when laws like HB2 won’t even be a consideration.”

It’s Membership Month: Celebrate HRC Membership Pride

In honor of National LGBTQ Pride Month, HRC wants to celebrate our pride and admiration for those who helped us make history — whether by standing up to bigoted politicians, raising their voice in support of full equality or lending a hand to help those in need: HRC members.

Since HRC was founded in 1980, our members have stood by our side and weathered the storms — from the institution and repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” to the discriminatory passage and court decision invalidating  the Defense of Marriage Act — to see our movement grow and expand across the nation.

As a nation and as an organization, we would not be able to bear witness to the amazing milestones we have achieved in the past three decades without our fiercely loyal members, who continue to spring into action at a moment’s notice to defend LGBTQ equality.

Thanks to you, in 2016 HRC has already…

  • Prevented more than 170 anti-LGBTQ state bills from becoming law, working with state and local partners
  • Sent nearly 300,000 messages to lawmakers across the country
  • Enlisted more than 200 major business leaders to speak out in support of LGBTQ equality

Not an HRC member but want to join the nation’s largest LGBTQ advocacy group? You can become an HRC member today OR renew your current HRC membership by making a donation to HRC — and long-time HRC member Bruce Bastian will TRIPLE your gift. That means $1 has the power of $3 with your gift today!

Documentary Spotlights Couple’s Fight for Marriage Equality and Adoption Rights

Documentary Spotlights Couple’s Fight for Marriage Equality and Adoption Rights

The new film Accidental Activists shares Jayne Rowse and April DeBoer’s brave struggle to adopt their children and disband Michigan’s constitutional amendment that prohibited same-sex marriage.

Detroit Free Press photojournalist Mandi Wright followed the couple for five years, documenting their struggle and case all the way to the United States Supreme Court in 2015.

“I had no idea when this started where it was going to end up. Nobody did, of course,” Wright told Detroit Free Press. “Honestly, I never thought I’d see the day where gay people could get legally married all across the U.S.”

Both nurses, the couple has four adopted children. Because of Michigan’s ban, however, Rowse adopted two children while DeBoer adopted the other two.

“There was nothing they (Rowse and DeBoer) could do to ensure that if one of them died, the other parent would get custody of the two children adopted by the deceased partner,” NPR reported. “They could put their wishes on paper, but that paper would have little legal status.”

In November 2014, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit overturned lower court rulings that struck down Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee bans on marriage equality. The decision created a circuit court split and the case headed to the Supreme Court. On June 26, 2015, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the plaintiff couples, making marriage equality the law of the land.

“I really hope that people see the joyous wonderful family they are, and that they deserve what they got,” Wright told Detroit Free Press. “I learned that justice can prevail. The system worked for them. It was an amazing thing to watch.”

The film premiered at the Freep Film Festival earlier this year.

HRC will host an exclusive screening of the film on Tuesday, June 21, at our offices in Washington, D.C. Click here to learn more and to RSVP.

#AM_Equality Tip Sheet: June 7, 2016

#AM_Equality Tip Sheet: June 7, 2016

HISTORY IN THE MAKING AS VOTERS IN SIX STATES TURN OUT TODAY: Voters in six states — California, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Dakota and South Dakota — will have the historic opportunity today to cast their ballots for Hillary Clinton, the first woman to win a major party’s nomination. The Associated Press reported last night that Clinton had the needed number of delegates to clinch the Democratic nomination.

TEXAS CITY COUNCIL VOTES TO PROTECT LGBTQ EMPLOYEES FROM WORKPLACE DISCRIMINATION: The City Council in Mesquite, Texas has voted to approve a welcome change to their Equal Employment Opportunity Policy. The change to the non-discrimination policy would make sexual orientation, gender identity and pregnancy protected classes under the definition of sex. The policy change will move Mesquite into line with Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by guaranteeing equal protection to its LGBTQ job applicants and employees. More from CBS DFW.

WHAT NORTH CAROLINA COULD LEARN FROM D.C.’S NON-DISCRIMINATION LAW: The Charlotte Observer says North Carolina ought to look to Washington, DC when determining how to protect its transgender residents and visitors from discrimination. DC law has allowed transgender people to use public restrooms that correspond to their gender identity since 2006, among other places of public accommodation. The availability of both multi-stall and single-stall restrooms allow people to use either the bathroom that matches their gender identity or gender-neutral facilities. Kyle Todd, an executive director of a local economic development program, says the law hasn’t caused a big stir: “You’ve probably been using the restroom with transgender people off and on for decades, and nobody’s ever known. I just can’t stress this enough: It’s just not a big deal. There hasn’t been a lot of wringing of hands and gnashing of teeth. It’s just a bathroom.”

  • “If you really want to serve DC’s trans community, hire them”: The DC Office of Human Rights and the National LGBTQ Task Force have released a best-practices guide for hiring and retaining transgender and gender non-conforming employees. More from DCist.
  • Lutheran leaders call for the repeal of HB2: The North Carolina Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) wants HB2 repealed. The group represents more than 200 Lutheran churches in the state, and says that the measure “creates a hostile community atmosphere.”
  • When asked about HB2, Dolly Parton came out in support of North Carolina’s transgender residents: “I think everyone should be treated with respect… I hope that everybody gets a chance to be who and what they are. I just know if I have to pee, I’m gonna pee. I don’t care where it’s going to be.”

NEW HOUSE AMENDMENT TARGETS TRANSGENDER AMERICANS: Congressman Steve King (R – IA) has proposed a vehemently anti-transgender measure that would prohibit transgender people from using the restroom that corresponds with their gender identity in the U.S. Capitol. King’s amendment would be tacked on to the fiscal year 2017 legislative appropriations bill and prohibit the use of funds that would allow individuals to use the restroom that matches their gender identity. HRC’s Government Affairs Director David Stacy says the amendment would “tell every Members’ transgender constituents they aren’t welcome to visit the Capitol, the Library of Congress, or a House or Senate office building. Surely the House of Representatives has important work it should be getting done for the American people instead of targeting transgender Americans. The House should reject this harmful and mean-spirited amendment.”

35th ANNIVERSARY OF FIRST CDC REPORT ON AIDS: This week marks the 35 years since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a report on five young men who died as a result of AIDS in the early 1980s — the first documented cases of AIDS. This anniversary serves as reminder of the years of stigma, advocacy and medical innovations that have marked the HIV and AIDS movement. Read the report at The Advocate and check out President Obama’s statement on this anniversary and history of HIV/AIDS in America here.

  • Proving there is still much work to be done, the National AIDS Trust in Great Britain warned the country’s National Health Service that it will face a legal challenge over its refusal to make available the HIV-prevention drug, PrEP. More from BuzzFeed.

HRC’S MUNICIPAL EQUALITY INDEX TO ADD 98 NEW CITIES TO 2016 REPORT: For the first time, HRC’s Municipal Equality Index (MEI), along with the Equality Federation, asked members and supporters to vote on the new cities to be rated by the annual survey of LGBTQ-inclusive policies and practices of municipalities nationwide. Ninety-eight new cities were picked to be researched this year, in addition to the usual lineup of all 50 state capitals, the nation’s 200 most populous cities, the five largest cities in every state, the communities home to each state’s two largest public universities, and an equal mix of 75 of the nation’s large, mid-size and small municipalities with the highest proportion of same-sex couples. A total of 506 cities will be rated, including NC newcomers Carrboro and Wilmington. More from HRC.

LOOK PAST PINK AND BLUE: Following complaints of discrimination in public places, New York City launched a $265,000 “Look Past Pink And Blue” ad campaign promoting the right of transgender residents and visitors to use the restroom that corresponds to their gender identity. The ads will begin appearing this week throughout the city’s subways, buses, phone booths and newspapers. More from BuzzFeed.

TRANS ATHLETE BECOMES FIRST TO COMPETE IN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP: Chris Mosier became the first transgender athlete to compete in a world championship when he participated in the 2016 International Triathlon Union championship this past weekend. He’s the first transgender athlete to qualify under the International Olympic Committee’s revised guidelines, which allow transgender athletes to compete as the gender with which they identify. Mosier qualified for the U.S. team while competing in North Carolina last month.

O CANADA: Last week, Canada’s Parliament approved legislation to make the county’s national anthem gender neutral. The bill, which passed overwhelmingly, changes the anthem’s words, “in all thy sons command” to “in all of us command.” Canada continues to be at the forefront of LGBTQ equality. Last month, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Administration proposed sweeping federal protections for transgender people. More from The Huffington Post.

OUT AND PROUD ON YOUTUBE: To celebrate Pride Month, popular LGBTQ YouTubers have used the platform to share why they’re proud to be out. YouTuber Davey Wavey organized the video, telling The Huffington Post that “With nearly five million [collective] subscribers, these YouTubers — and their audiences — have built a virtual community for celebrating who we are. It’s so powerful, and something we’re all grateful to be a part of.” Watch the video here.

  • BATHROOM SHOW-STOPPER: The cast of the hit musical Kinky Boots created a video calling out the ridiculousness of anti-transgender bathroom laws. Check it out at The Advocate.

HRC PARTNERS WITH AMERICAN APPAREL TO “MAKE AMERICA GAY/ LGBTQ AGAIN”: Yesterday, American Apparel, HRC and the Ally Coalition launched a new campaign to support LGBTQ equality this Pride season. The campaign, Make America Gay Again/Make America LGBTQ Again, will feature a new Pride-themed merchandise line at American Apparel, a video series and in-store events to support acceptance for the LGBTQ community. A portion of all merchandise sales will go to HRC and the Ally Coalition. More from HRC.

  • Snaps for Equality: In honor of Pride Month, the W Hotel franchise has launched an exclusive series of Snapchat filters featuring phrases such as “love won” and “the road to equality has never been straight.” For every filtered snap, the W will donate $1 to HRC.
  • Live Proud: AT&T has kicked off its fourth annual Live Proud campaign, which encourages participants to celebrate and empower the LGBTQ community. Go to att.com/liveproud for more.

Hulu premieres LGBT-inclusive animated fairy tale short 'Rosaline'

Hulu premieres LGBT-inclusive animated fairy tale short 'Rosaline'

Today Hulu debuts Rosaline, an animated fairy tale short film written by acclaimed children’s author Daniel Errico. The short depicts the adventures of Rosaline as she travels through the woods to gather a picnic for her sweetheart and the obstacles she overcomes in her quest – a conniving witch, a threatening wolf, and a fairy godmother. The Fosters’ star Teri Polo (Stef Adams Foster) narrates the story. The story is also available as a Kindle ebook.

Hulu previously released another animated short of another of Errico’s stories, The Bravest Knight Who Ever Lived, which followed pumpkin farmer Cedric as he trained to fulfill his dream of becoming a Knight. During his training, he fought a dragon and saved two kidnapped royal siblings in the process. Upon their return to the Kingdom, Cedric and the Prince marry and Cedric finally gets his fairy tale ending.

“Children’s media is about finding a nurturing way to teach kids about the world around them. To me, that includes showing all forms of love and identity in a positive light. Our job is to foster children’s wonderful, natural ability to accept themselves and others,” said Errico.

LGBT representation in all-ages programming is incredibly important and has slowly picked up over the past few years. Nickelodeon’s Legend of Korra revealed that two of its main characters, Korra and Asami, were in love as the show came to a close in 2014, and Disney Channel introduced its first lesbian couple in an episode of Good Luck Charlie in 2014. Cartoon Network’s hit animated series Steven Universe includes fan favorite alien superhero Garnet, who is the physical form of two female-presenting Gem beings who are in love.

Steven Universe creator Rebecca Sugar announced in April  that a children’s book about the love story between Ruby and Sapphire – the Gems who fused to create Garnet – would be published later this year. These stories help LGBT youth to recognize they are not alone and their identity is valid, as well as accelerating acceptance among their peers leading to an ultimately safer environment for LGBT young people.
