Well, it’s official. In case you haven’t heard, Hillary Clinton has clinched the Democratic party’s nomination for president. The AP called it last night.

Of course, reactions have been mixed. Not everyone is pleased with this news. Nor do they seem to fully understand the historical implications. A woman has been nominated for president by a major political party for the first time in our nation’s history. That’s huge.

Republican Group Backs Garland Confirmation

Republican Group Backs Garland Confirmation

Post submitted by HRC Law Fellow James Shygelski

Today, businessman and former ambassador Earle I. Mack urged Republican leaders to “stop being the unreasonable party” and confirm President Obama’s nominee, Merrick Garland, to fill the Supreme Court vacancy.

In a full page ad in The New York Times, Mack called upon “Republican hardliners in the Senate, blinded by politics,” to put aside the Presidential race and “acknowledge the danger facing our country by holding hostage the confirmation of Chief Judge Garland.”  His endorsement of the president’s nominee praised the Chief Judge’s credentials and his history of being “fair in his rulings,” attributes that would make him “a fine Justice.”

This plea to the party, however, comes at a time when “polls show little hope for a long-shot Republican victory in the Presidential election,” and six Republican-held Senate seats are considered “endangered.”

Mack continued to warn leaders “it is far better to confirm a known variable” than to risk the loss of Republican credibility, control of the Senate, and the ability to confirm or reject future Presidential nominations.” In this effort to redeem the Republican legacy through confirmation, Mack hoped to send a message to the country that Republicans in Congress are “ready to work” and are not just “the party of no.”

HRC is committed to ending the obstruction of the judicial confirmation process, and earlier this year, HRC joined dozens of progressive advocacy organizations around the country for the #DoYourJob National Day of Action to urge Senate Republicans to fulfill their constitutional obligation and hold confirmation hearings for Garland’s nomination to the Supreme Court. In addition, last week, HRC hosted a call for LGBT and allied organizations to provide an update on the status of Garland’s nomination, what’s at stake for the LGBT community and ways that groups can help advance the nomination. You can sign HRC’s petition calling on Senator Mitch McConnell to stop playing politics and to fulfill his constitutional obligation here.

HRC Alabama Blasts Disgraced Chief Justice Roy Moore Over Latest Stall Tactics

HRC Alabama Blasts Disgraced Chief Justice Roy Moore Over Latest Stall Tactics

Today, HRC Alabama blasted disgraced Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore for engaging in stall tactics to delay responding to charges by the Alabama Judicial Inquiry Commission that his defiance of federal marriage equality rulings violated judicial ethics rules. After more than a year of trying to deny loving same-sex couples their constitutional right to marriage, it is well past time for Chief Justice Roy Moore to be censured for disregarding the laws of our nation.

“Roy Moore has repeatedly used his authority to discriminate against LGBTQ people and their families, and this latest stall tactic continues his reckless pattern of delaying justice and skirting the law at every opportunity,” said Eva Walton Kendrick, HRC Alabama State Manager. “This extension does not change the facts — Moore is unfit to serve on the court, and we look forward to the day he is permanently removed.”

Since January 2015, when Alabama’s marriage ban was first struck down, Moore has consistently used his position on the state Supreme Court to block marriage equality in Alabama. After the state’s ban on same-sex marriage was overturned, Moore wrote to Governor Robert Bentley urging him to view the ruling as non-binding “judicial tyranny,” and informing the state’s probate judges that they could ignore the decision.

Moore caused havoc again in January when he issued another shameful order, claiming that the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, which guaranteed national marriage equality, did not invalidate Alabama’s marriage equality ban. Moore justified his unconscionable position by asserting that  state law allows him to “take affirmative and appropriate action to correct or alleviate any condition or situation adversely affecting the administration of justice within the state.” Despite his opposition to marriage equality, earlier this year Moore was forced to dismiss a final legal effort seeking to uphold the state’s marriage ban.

Moore is no stranger to this type of ethics complaint. In 2003, he was removed from the state’s Supreme Court for ignoring a federal court order to remove a Ten Commandments replica from the rotunda of the Alabama Judicial Building. Moore is being represented by Mat Staver, of the Liberty Counsel — an organization that has been designated an anti-LGBTQ hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).

Would All The Bisexual Men Please Stand Up?

Would All The Bisexual Men Please Stand Up?

23bisex1-videoSixteenByNine1050-v3

Celebrities like Anna Paquin and Margaret Cho are open about their bisexuality, but where are the bi men?

With the exception of Alan Cumming, bi guys seem to be few and far between, and Washington Post writer and social media producer (and bi guy) Ryan Carey-Mahoney wants to know why. He writes:

In the 20-odd years before I came out as bisexual, I was a very lost soul. My only exposure to bisexuality was the promiscuous partygoer or the flirty college girl tropes you see in movies. I viewed it as a women’s thing, and, in my warped mind, any man identifying as bisexual was just lying to himself about being gay.

Oh, how blind I was. Now, having been out for about two years, I know that there’s no shame in who I am: Hey, I’m just RCM and I’m attracted to more than one gender. Big whoop! But coming out is just the beginning. It’s the next phase that seems harder — and I’m still searching for wiser bi men to serve as role models.

He’s right. RCM points to some stats that prove that, yes, bisexuals exist…and their numbers are going up. And we’ve all been reminded on multiple occasions that “straight” guys experimenting with their bi side is becoming more common.

Related: “Straight” Guys Are Having More Bisexual Sex Than Ever Before, Study Finds

Still, he laments the lack of prominent bisexual male role models and the stereotypes that come with being bi:

Bisexual people are often stereotyped as promiscuous. If you’re a bi man, for example, many in the gay and straight communities will say you’re actually gayAnd if you’re a bi woman, it’s assumed that you’re experimenting with your sexuality and will eventually end up with a man.

And, he eventually figures out that what he’s looking for may be staring at him in the mirror:

In my short time being out and proud, I’ve seen some of these moments myself. Close friends responded to my coming out with their own; others thanked me for speaking up. One stranger even made me the first person they ever told. It’s funny. While I was looking for a role model, I realized: I’m slowly becoming one.

Bi guys: they’re not just in porn anymore!

But seriously, we all have our biases about bi guys, whether fetishizing them via porn or excluding them from our dating pools (this writer personally had a no bi guys policy back in his single days), but more visibility definitely helps.

More out and proud bi guys will definitely help to change minds in the future!
