Self-Described ‘Black Queer Man’ Says Being Celibate Improved His Sex Life
Sex is historically pretty easy to come by as a gay guy. But what happens when you want more?
Writer and self-described “black queer man” Aaron Barksdale decided to give celibacy a shot to see if he could move beyond the casual hookup. In his essay for Out, he laments the all too common “Grindr hookup” and explores the role his race plays in the gay community.
Related: A Black Man Answers: “Are Black Men Really Bigger?”
How did he start?
I began by deleting my dating apps, which have become all but useless. With a few taps, the hundreds of ghosted conversations I’d had with eligible bachelors disappeared as quickly as they were swiped right.
Clearing my phone of distractions was easy, and in the first week, I thought, “I can do this—no problem.” My celibacy only included abstaining from penetrative oral and anal sex, but I continued to masturbate alone or with a partner. And though my sexual frustration gnawed at me like a rabid animal for more, I was determined to reclaim a part of my sexual power that was different from embracing my natural desires.
And he gets pretty thoughtful about being a black man in a white gay world:
Being black, queer and having predominantly dated white men, meant that abstaining from sex was to avoid white ideals of beauty that I am usually drawn to.
Historically, black men and women have been portrayed as overly sexual as a way to disregard our humanity. The roots of this misconception come from slavery when black bodies were used for breeding in an economy based on free labor.
His first trip back to the bedroom after celibacy was pretty amazing:
After 40 days of celibacy, I finally “broke the seal” with a one-night-stand with a friend. The experience felt explosive, tantric, and heightened from the extended period of deprivation. But aside from just connecting with someone physically we also developed a deeper bond outside the bedroom, sharing stories about our childhood, work, and dating other men.
It’s a fascinating read that you should really get into. We hope Aaron Barksdale finally finds what he’s looking for, and we’re sure he won’t be the last guy to take this path to do so.
Demi Lovato, Martin Shkreli, DJ Artform, Chicago, Muhammad Ali, Hillary Clinton, Robbie Rogers: NEWS
HILLARY CLINTON. Conservatives praise her foreign policy speech bashing Donald Trump: “DANA PERINO (CO-HOST): Well, agree with most of what’s been said. Including with Juan. I thought it was one of her best speeches and I do think she had made the pivot to take Donald Trump on directly as he’s been doing with her. He has the luxury of doing that because he was able to dispense of his opponents early on. She tried ridicule without malice, and she didn’t yell.”
ALI VS TRUMP. What “The Greatest” once said about Trump’s Muslim ban: “Our political leaders should use their position to bring understanding about the religion ofIslam,” Ali wrote, “and clarify that these misguided murderers have perverted people’s views on what Islam really is.”
MARTIN SHKRELI. Drug price hijacker hit with another charge: “Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn filed a superseding indictment containing one count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud against Martin Shkreli, the pharmaceutical firm operator who made headlines for raising the price of a life-saving cancer drug by 5,000 percent. Shkreli faces up to 20 years in prison for allegedly paying off debts from two failing hedge funds and covering up some personal expenses by skimming assets from Retrophin, a biopharmaceutical firm he ran.”
SPACE. Universe expanding 9 percent faster than previously thought: “You start at two ends, and you expect to meet in the middle if all of your drawings are right and your measurements are right. But now the ends are not quite meeting in the middle and we want to know why.”
SYDNEY. Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in financial, management turmoil. “Sydney’s Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras has been plunged into turmoil with opinion divided over proposed measures to prevent criminal activity, mismanagement and nepotism within the organisation that runs the world-famous event. An extraordinary general meeting of Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Limited will be held on June 25 at Erskineville Town Hall to vote on 13 resolutions raised by two directors, James Brechney and Silke Bader.”
ANTHEMGATE. DJ Artform spinning again at Petco Park: “Art Romero, also known as DJ ArtForm, was back at Petco Park on Friday spinning records for the first time since his audio mix-up during the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus performance on May 28 became a national story. Per the chorus’ request following investigations by the team and Major League Baseball and Romero’s apology, the Padres have reinstated Romero in a role that no longer includes work in the control room.”

WINDY CITY BATHROOMS. Chicago’s transgender policies need work: “The latest development involves the Chicago City Council, which is considering an amendment to the city’s Human Rights Ordinance to allow people to use the bathroom that reflects their gender identity. Few may know this, but Chicago’s ordinance – among the first in the nation to include gender identity as a protected class (amended in 2002) – includes a bathroom carve-out that requires people to use “a public accommodation or any of its products, facilities or services” that matches the sex on their government-issued identification. It’s time to bring this ordinance into the 21st century.”

It Got Better for Raven-Symoné. ‘The View’ Host Opens Up about Coming Out: WATCH
Raven-Symoné started acting at age 3 on The Cosby Show. By 18, she was playing the lead role in Disney’s That’s So Raven, the channel’s most-watched show, and touring with The Cheetah Girls. She could feel the pressure of having to look a certain way.
She knew she liked girls, but because of Disney and the Raven-Symoné brand, she felt she had to hide her sexuality. Her only option was to live in the closet. “I’ll always have a husband and a ‘friend’ on the side, so I can be happy,” she recalls.
But then she fell in love, and everything changed.
Symoné talks about her journey on season 3 of “It Got Better,” an inspiring online docuseries co-produced by Dan Bucatinsky and Lisa Kudrow and shared on Lexus’ L/Studio, where people share their coming out stories, their struggles and victories, and how it turned out for them.
The docuseries is brought to you by the It Gets Better Project, a worldwide movement created in 2010 by author Dan Savage. Its mission is “to communicate to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth around the world that it gets better, and to create and inspire the changes needed to make it better for them”.
Previous guests of “It Got Better” include Tim Gunn, RuPaul and Laverne Cox.
She felt “lighter,” Symone said after she finally came out. “I felt like I could go out and not have to put on 17 different hats to be myself.”
It gets better, indeed.

Given The Chance, Would You Hook Up With A Married Heterosexual Guy?
Hey, brah! Here’s an experience many readers won’t empathize with, but plenty will envy.
In a Reddit thread titled The Straight Married Man Issue, a young man discusses his recent dalliances with a straight married guy.
Whoa. That’s so not frat.
“At the end of the day, I know it’s wrong,” he writes, “because I wouldn’t want my loved one or spouse cheating on me or keeping desires they need to act on from me.”
Related: Straight Dudes Sound Off On Letting Gay Men Explore Their Armpits
For whatever reason, this guy constantly winds up “in some sort of tango with a ‘straight’ married man.” He doesn’t explain his strategy. (Maybe lying through your teeth?) Here’s what he says:
I’m conflicted because these men, however they explain it to themselves, need/want this outlet but are so entwined in their other lives. Part of me thinks it’s exhilarating to know that people of all walks have gay desires and then part of me thinks they need to quit living a lie.

So far, responses are all over the map–from the simple (“Don’t be somebody’s side hoe, dammit!“) to the provocative and long-in-the-tooth:
I’ve hooked up with a number of married “straight” men, although mostly without my knowledge prior to meeting up. It usually comes out after the deed is done. Sometimes I ask why they do it, and it’s 99.9% of the time acting on impulses they would never have the opportunity to act on otherwise. A guy once told me that if he could re-do it all, he would be married to a guy and not a woman – but he’s got a family so he can’t/won’t change it which I get.
As a rule – I would never go out of my way to seek married guys, but I figured out the married ones are almost always out-of-towners looking for some D. If I end up hooking up with a married guy, it doesn’t go beyond the physical. I don’t want a relationship with them and I don’t want to start an affair.
I don’t really feel any guilt if I hook up with a married guy, especially if he mislead or omitted that info on the outset since he clearly has issues he needs to work out. I’m not there to be his therapist or whatever. I know it’s callous to just say “well it’s his issue to deal with” but it sort of is. And we always play safe so the risk of any potential STD transmission is substantially reduced. If we get it on, and no one’s the wiser and we both have a good time, it’s a win-win.
So, gay bros, what do you think? Is hooking up with a married straight guy too toxic to touch? Or an opportunity to be savored and exploited?
In the words of the original poster: “Stories? Thoughts? Feelings? Discuss.”

DVD: “Helicopter Mom,” “Fever,” “Tab Hunter Confidential,” “Age Of Consent,” & More!
It’s a week of queer under the radar titles, from documentaries to comedies.
Closeted Hollywood matinee idol turned out and proud activist Tab Hunter is profiled in documentary Tab Hunter Confidential, while a groundbreaking London fetish bar receives the spotlight in Age Of Consent.
Two young queer lads plot a murder in the Leopold and Loeb-inspired Fever, while an overbearing mother decides she wants her teenage son to be gay despite his not even being sure where his sexuality sits in Helicopter Mom (above).
Now for trailers and details…
(VOD)
Tab Hunter was a 1950s Hollywood heartthrob, a hunky All-American boy… except very much closeted and gay. The ups and downs of his career and trajectory from that bygone era to a more campy onscreen reinvention in films like John Waters’ Polyester, and of course eventual coming out and happy present are recounted in this fast-moving, entertaining documentary from director Jeffrey Schwarz (I Am Divine, Vito). Know your LGBT history, kids!
($19.99 DVD; Artsploitation Films)
The sordid tale of gay thrill killers Leopold and Loeb, which inspired Hitchcock’s Rope and Tom Kalin’s New Queer Cinema classic Swoon, is given a Gallic twist in director Raphael Neal’s adaptation of Leslie Kaplan’s 2005 novel. Philosophy students Damien and Pierre break up the monotony of their privileged lives by committing a murder, which an optician, Zoe, may have witnessed to some degree. Will she give them up or, perhaps, become more caught up in the spell of the diabolical pair?
($24.99 DVD; Breaking Glass Pictures)
Nia Vardalos stars as an overbearing single mom, Maggie Cooper, who becomes obsessed with the idea her sensitive teenage son, Lloyd, is gay. The boy, however, is actually not sure which way he swings, but that doesn’t stop mom – the title refers to a mother who basically hovers over her kid at all times – from trying to set him up with a boyfriend, sabotaging his attempts to date a girl, and forcing him to apply for an LGBT scholarship. What’s a sexually confused boy to do? Extras include a featurette and commentary.
($24.99 DVD; Bangor Films)
Prolific, provocative gay director Todd Verow teams up with co-director Charles Lum to put the spotlight – hopefully not too bright, though – on London’s famed gay fetish bar, The Hoist. In the process, they share all sorts of fascinating details about the UK’s LGBT history. Sexy and enlightening stuff. Also out this week is Verow’s experimental multi-character fiction feature, Available Light.

Bill Maher: Anonymous Gay Sex at Yosemite National Park is About to Get Corporatized – WATCH
Last night, Bill Maher’s “New Rule” was about how capitalism is taking over everything, and how it differs from socialism.
“Older Americans are more religious. And America’s real religion is capitalism. And like any religion, it needs a devil. And that devil has always been socialism. In 1961 Ronald Reagan said if we passed Medicare we’d wind up telling our children what it was once like in America, when men were free. Thanks, Nostradumbass!”
More recently, the U.S. government announced that it would begin selling naming rights to our national parks because the parks are 11 billion dollars in debt.
Said Maher:
“So get ready to see the Bison roaming at Yellowstone with the Nike swoosh shaved into their ass. And you’ll no longer be having anonymous gay sex in Yosemite’s rest area #12. You’ll be getting blown in the Quicken Loans Men’s Room. The Grand Tetons will be brought to you by Hooters and the Washington Monument by Cialis. And the Statue of Liberty by Massengill. ‘Give me your tired, your hungry, your feeling not so fresh.’”
I’m not arguing against the free market. Just not for everything. It’s funny. Older people think socialism is capitalism’s enemy, and younger people think it’s capitalism’s replacement, but they’re both wrong. What socialism is is capitalism’s lap band. Something to prevent it from eating everything.
