President Obama: Openly Gay and Lesbian Soldiers Make America Stronger – WATCH

Delivering the commencement address at the U.S. Air Force Academy on Thursday, President Obama said allowing gay and lesbian soldiers to openly serve in the military has strengthened America.

President Obama’s remarks came in the last year of his presidency and just five years after the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, the policy which expelled gay and lesbian service members.

Via Politico:

“…America has to stand for rule of law. We live our values when our military, like America itself, truly welcomes the talents of all people. We are stronger when our gay and lesbian cadets and troops can serve their country, a country they love, without hiding who they love.”

[Obama added] The U.S. is stronger when Muslim-American cadets “know that we celebrate their service as proud, patriotic, Muslim Americans who are also serving our armed forces.”

President Obama also warned against the dangers of isolationism during his speech, as USA Today reports:

“We cannot turn inward,” Obama told the Air Force cadets. “We cannot give in to isolationism.”

While he did not specifically mention Trump or the political campaign, the president did respond to Republican critics who have questioned American commitments to alliances like NATO and opposed international agreements like the Law of the Sea Treaty.

Protesting the Republican-run Senate’s refusal to approve that latter treaty, Obama said that “it’s time for the Senate to do its job and help us advance American leadership, rather than undermine it.”

Rachel Maddow Profiles Hillary Clinton’s Shirtless Pranksters – WATCH

shirtless pranksters

Last night on The Rachel Maddow Show, Maddow took a deep dive into the politically satyric actions of two pranksters who have been trolling presidential candidates this election cycle.

We first told you about these pranksters, who have been identified as Davram Stiefler and John Nelson, last week when they decided to troll Hillary Clinton at a rally in Orange County, California. The guys appeared shirtless and caught Clinton’s attention just in time to keep from being kicked out.

Despite reports indicating that these guys were not actually supporters of Clinton (including our own), Clinton’s campaign included them in a new Instagram video.

The two men were previously seen at a Hillary rally wearing “Settle for Hillary” shirts, and were also heard saying they were excited to ‘settle for Hillary’ after meeting the candidate on the rope line at the Orange County rally.

Mormon Church Moves Fight Against Gay Marriage to Mexico: VIDEO

Mormon Church Moves Fight Against Gay Marriage to Mexico: VIDEO

Mormon church leaders have issued a directive that members in Mexico should oppose a new initiative to legalize same-sex marriage.

Presidente_Enrique_Peña_Nieto._Fotografía_oficialThe call comes after Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto (right) last month announced his support for nationwide marriage equality. Peña Nieto proposed amending federal law to ban same-sex marriage on the basis of ethnicity, nationality, disability, social condition, religion, gender, or sexual preference.

“The Mexican State should impede discrimination in any form and assure equal rights for everyone,” he said.

However, last week Mormon Mexican area authority Elder Benjamin DeHoyos (above) encouraged “members of the Church to unite our voices with those of other citizens in exercising our rights, as they are listed in the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States, which establish and honor religious liberty, expression of beliefs and thoughts, both in public and private.”

— Enrique Peña Nieto (@EPN) May 17, 2016

According to KUTV.com, church officials have also requested that bishops read DeHoyos’ remarks to congregations in the form of a statement which reads in part:

“Due to the Federal Government’s recent announcement of the initiative to legalize marriage between people of the same sex in the entire country, we emphasize the Church’s position on this topic as it is described in ‘The Family: A Proclamation to the Word.’ We reaffirm that ‘The family is ordained of God’, and ‘marriage between a man and a woman is essential for [God’s] eternal plan’.”

Same-sex marriage is already legal in some Mexican states and in Mexico City. Currently, gay couples who live in states that do not recognize same-sex marriage must sue to obtain a marriage license. Peña Nieto’s proposal will require a two-thirds majority vote from the Mexican congress.

New Research Finds Same-Sex Experiences are Rising in America

New Research Finds Same-Sex Experiences are Rising in America

A new study in the Archives of Sexual Behavior found that more Americans are engaging in same-sex sexual relationships, including an increasing number of adults who say they’ve had both male and female partners. The study also found that an overwhelming percentage of Americans say they are accepting of and open to this trend.

“A team of social scientists found that the percentage of men reporting male sexual partners had nearly doubled from 1990 to 2014, and the percentage of women reporting same-sex experiences had more than doubled during the same period,” The Washington Post reported. “Between 1973 and 1990, the percentage of adults who believed ‘sexual relations between two adults of the same sex [was] not wrong at all’ only rose from 11 percent to 13 percent. But by 2014, 49 percent of all adults and 63 percent of millennials expressed tolerance of these relationships.”

The Post reports that the percentage of survey respondents who had all same-sex partners didn’t increase significantly between 1990 and 2014, but the percentage of adults with both male and female partners increased from 3.1 percent to 7.7 percent.

Recent surveys have shown that bisexual people are the largest group within the LGBT community: half of people who identify as LGB identify as bisexual. However, bisexuals are far less likely than their gay and lesbian peers to be out, citing stereotypes, skepticism and pressure to “choose” one sexual orientation as reasons for staying in the closet.

HRC Foundation, in partnership with BiNet USA, the Bisexual Organizing Project, and the Bisexual Resource Center, released “A Resource Guide to Coming Out As Bisexual” earlier this year to help bisexual people of all ages who are contemplating the important step of coming out. The guide features the inspirational words of bisexual people who have come out and found community and fulfillment, as well as advice about the risks and rewards of coming out, and strategies for navigating real life coming out situations – from telling family and friends, to assessing whether a workplace would be supportive and safe.

Triangle-Area Small Business Owners Urge Repeal of HB2

Triangle-Area Small Business Owners Urge Repeal of HB2

Yesterday, TurnOUT! North Carolina (NC) and the Small Business Majority kicked off a four city tour of North Carolina featuring Small Business leaders detailing the real economic harm they are experiencing as a result of HB2. Starting yesterday in Raleigh, then traveling to Charlotte the next day and then to Greenville and Greensboro next week, our “Small Businesses for the Repeal of HB2” tour will highlight how HB2 is directly impacting small businesses, small business owners, their families and employees.

Recent statements by Lt. Governor Dan Forest scoff at the impact that HB2 is having on the state’s economy implying that the bill has not done real harm to business in the state. Despite reports from the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce that HB2 has already cost the region over $3.2 million in lost revenues, elected officials in Raleigh are clearly not paying attention to the reality they created by rushing to pass HB2.

The speakers from yesterday’s press conference collectively called on leaders in Raleigh to fully repeal HB2 before it is too late for the state.

Chris Heavener and Sam Ratto, co-founders of Videri Chocolate Factory — which relies on convention and tourism business to thrive, hosted yesterday’s press conference. They are seeing a decrease in visitors and have had to cancel events as a result of HB2.

Debra Bost is a resident of Hillsborough, but her family owns Southland Parking in Charlotte. The company relies on daily and nightly parking by tourists and visitors who come to Charlotte for conventions, sporting events and concerts. With more and more events being canceled in Charlotte, they are losing thousands of dollars of income.

Victor Lytvinenko and his wife Sara own Raleigh Denim Workshop, whose handmade, locally-sourced jeans are known around the globe and are sold in boutiques from Los Angeles to New York, London and Tokyo. When Victor gets calls from customers, he ends up spending time talking about HB2 instead of being able to do business.

“I love this state so much. So much that we named our company after our city, so much that we use most of our raw materials from North Carolina, and now that association is working against us,” he said. “I’ve been emailing Governor McCrory, I’ve been emailing the legislature, begging for the sake of our friends, our family, our business, we need to repeal HB2 now, so that we can get back to focusing on our business.”

Zack T. Medford, Senior Partner of Isaac Hunter’s Hospitality, spoke out about their group of restaurants in Raleigh.

“When we first opened the doors of our business seven years ago, we found success thanks to the support of our community…Raleigh’s reputation as a welcoming and inclusive city brought an influx of new residents that helped make our business a success. With those residents came national conferences, major events, and most importantly, dollars into our economy,” he said. “Mr. McCrory, I’ve got to tell you, this law has me pretty upset. Discrimination is bad for business. As a small business owner, I’m feeling the direct effects…When HB2 writes discrimination into law, it is not only putting our economy at risk, but it is targeting people who are customers and employees all across the state.  It’s time to repeal HB2.”

This is why TurnOUT! NC, which is a coalition of HRC, Equality North Carolina, the ACLU and the Campaign for Southern Equality, is working to mobilize thousands of North Carolinians for the full repeal of HB2. TurnOUT! NC has field organizers based in Asheville, Charlotte and the Triangle area. Additionally, HRC staff is on the ground working with coalition partners across the Tar Heel State. There are daily opportunities to volunteer with weekly phone banks and weekend canvassing opportunities.

If you live in North Carolina and want to join the efforts to repeal HB2, RSVP for upcoming phonebanks and volunteer opportunities. For more information about our work in North Carolina, contact HRC Associate Regional Field Director Ryan Rowe at [email protected].

EA introduces new gender options in 'The Sims'

EA introduces new gender options in 'The Sims'

Today Electronic Arts announced a significant update to its popular game The Sims 4 that allows players a greater range of gender customization options when creating their Sims.

The Sims 4 allows players to create characters, known as Sims, and then launch those Sims into the game where they lead a life that includes aging, falling in love, getting married and starting a family. Some players create Sims that resemble themselves and their friends, and they can also create Sims who are not based on actual people. Released in September 2014, The Sims 4 was the best-selling computer game of 2015, according to the Entertainment Software Association.

Within the game, players use “Create A Sim” mode (or CAS) to create their Sims. In CAS players can select the Sim’s gender, body shape, voice tone, hairstyle, and clothes, among other options. Before the update, players were limited to choosing only male or female Sims, and most voice, clothing, and hairstyle options were specific to only one gender.

With today’s free update, players now have many more customization options when creating their Sims. Body shapes are more variable, and all voice, hairstyle and clothing options are available to all Sims, regardless of their gender. The update also allows players to bring a Sim who was created as male or female back into Create A Sim and modify the Sim’s gender. This gives players the opportunity to tell transgender stories in way that wasn’t possible before the update.

Several months ago, Electronic Arts reached out to GLAAD and asked the organization to consult with them as they re-designed the customization options within Create A Sim. While all players can use the new gender customization options, the company wanted to make sure that the update was respectful to the transgender community and reflected choices a transgender player might want to make when creating Sims.

“Creating the possibility for greater gender diversity within the world of The Sims is an exciting development,” said Nick Adams, the director of GLAAD’s Transgender Media Program. “It was a pleasure working with developers who were committed to updating the game so that all players can create a Sims world that more accurately reflects the world in which we live today.”

The update is available today to those players running the most current version of The Sims 4.

GLAAD calls on FIFA & US Soccer to stop homophobic chants

GLAAD calls on FIFA & US Soccer to stop homophobic chants

GLAAD

Tomorrow, June 3, in the United States, the highly-anticipated Copa América Centenario soccer tournament kicks off and will be watched by millions of soccer fans around the world.

Unfortunately, there’s the potential that these fans will be hearing a homophobic chant, “eeehhh puto” which means “hey fag*ot.”

GLAAD has taken steps to counter the chants. We’ve called on FIFA and U.S. Soccer to adopt a zero-tolerance policy that would prohibit the use of anti-LGBT chants and taunting. We’ve also asked them to educate fans so they understand the power of anti-gay slurs. GLAAD’s also working closely with Spanish-language network Univision, which will be televising most of the games.

The chant was heard in 2014 at the last World Cup (GLAAD spoke out then too) for which several countries received a fine, deemed by many light punishment.  Mexico’s national team recently created a campaign to educate fans, but one that never mentions homophobia specifically, nor the chants. In fact, the chant was recently heard at a game in San Antonio Texas.

There has been, at times, debate about the meaning of the word “puto,” with some arguing it’s not synonymous with a homophobic term, or that their intention is not to use it that way. The word is very much an anti-gay slur in many countries, and enough agencies have weighed in, including Mexico’s National Council to Prevent Discrimination (CONAPRED), which wrote that the chant “reflects homophobia, sexism, and misogyny that still prevail in our society.” Sadly, millions of gay and transgender Latinos can attest to the power of that word, having heard it throughout their lives.

LGBT fans and their families and friends will be in every single stadium during Copa América Centenario and millions more will be watching on television, and we don’t want to hear a homophobic insult chanted by thousands of people, just the same as we would not want—nor would anyone tolerate—allowing a racial epithet to be chanted during one of sporting’s most important events.
