HIV/AIDS Activist Peter Staley Fights Back Against Sanders Campaign’s Personal Attacks – WATCH

peter staley bernie

Prominent HIV/AIDS activist Peter Staley appeared on MSNBC’s AM Joy over the weekend to discuss the Bernie Sanders campaign’s attacks on him and his work.

As we reported, Sanders finally met with Staley and other HIV/AIDS activists after first cancelling a planned get-together. However, the campaign incensed those activists by putting out a misleading press release saying that the group had endorsed a California ballot initiative created by AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) to lower prices for taxpayer-supported AIDS treatments. Not only was that not the case, but Staley and many other activists have been at odds with AHF President Michael Weinstein over AHF’s opposition to preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP).

PREVIOUSLY: Bernie Sanders Angers HIV/AIDS Activists by Misrepresenting Meeting

After Staley and others criticized the Sanders campaign for mischaracterizing the outcome of their meeting, Sanders’ policy director Warren Gunnels blasted Staley on Twitter, writing, “‘Activist’  who absurdly said @BernieSanders is running a campaign of hate made a fortune from big drug companies.”

Staley and his supporters, including Dan Savage among many others, quickly fired back against Gunnels on social media.

Millions of gay men alive & able to vote today thanks to @peterstaley. Attack on Peter from Sanders camp appalling. pic.twitter.com/LjUyi7x2vQ

— Dan Savage (@fakedansavage) May 28, 2016

Speaking with Joy Reid, Staley corrected the record and fought back against Gunnels’ assertion that he took money from Gilead and “big pharma.” Staley says he has been an outspoken critic of Gilead and has not received a “fortune” from it and other drug companies.

Of the personal attacks launched against him by the Sanders campaign, Staley told Reid, “I don’t quite understand where that’s coming from.” Staley also noted that Gunnels deleted his accusatory tweet. “I guess that’s an apology of a kind,” Staley said.

As for the “campaign of hate” barb, Staley says it dates back to a comment he made on social media about the increasingly negative rhetoric put out by Sanders and his surrogates. He says on Facebook,

My apologies to Warren Gunnels. I found a buried Tweet where I linked to a Michael Cohen op-ed in the Boston Globe (bit.ly/1pTWicc) that slammed Sanders for his campaign of character assassination against Clinton, where I said “sad it’s morphed from progressive ideals to a campaign of hate.” I decided to apologize in Gunnels style by deleting the tweet. 🙂

#AM_Equality Tip Sheet: May 31, 2016

#AM_Equality Tip Sheet: May 31, 2016

UNC WON’T ENFORCE VILE HB2 LAW: In a welcome reversal from her previous position, UNC System President Margaret Spellings says she will not enforce the discriminatory HB2 on the University of North Carolina campuses. In a legal filing Friday, Spellings said she and the university system will not “promulgate any guidelines or regulations” requiring that transgender students use facilities inconsistent with their gender identity. HRC Communications Director Jay Brown said that the next step should be supporting full repeal, noting that “the law remains a threat to students, faculty and alumni — not to mention the rest of the state — as long as it is on the books. Students have a right to learn without fear of discrimination, on or off campus, and university leaders have an obligation to protect them.” More from HRC.

  • Pick up the tab: UNC had asked state Attorney General Roy Cooper’s office to pay the hefty legal fees the school would accrue using expensive outside counsel to defend against HB2 lawsuits. Cooper has made clear he won’t defend the discriminatory law. In an email to the Board of Governors on Friday, Cooper’s office had some sensible advice for avoiding legal bills, encouraging the board to “help fight HB2 by urging the governor and legislature to repeal the law, which would quickly solve the problem.”
  • Indie band Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros performed an onstage vow renewal ceremony for a gay couple during the band’s concert in Raleigh. The band used the moment to protest HB2, reminding fans that the law “was passed by an immoral minority – North Carolina has many thriving, creative, modern communities.”
  • Famed singer-songwriter Jackson Browne will donate all of his North Carolina shows’ net proceeds to support local and national LGBTQ groups, including Equality NC and HRC. Thanks, Jackson Browne, for your support of HRC and the fight to #RepealHB2!

HRC CALLS ON GOP LEADERSHIP TO CONDEMN LAWMAKER’S ATTACKS ON LGBT PEOPLE AS “WORTHY OF DEATH”: HRC has again made the call for Republican leadership to condemn repeated anti-LGBT attacks from lawmakers. Rep. Rick Allen (R – GA) made headlines last week after he said LGBT people are “worthy of death.” He made his comments during an official House Republican Conference meeting. HRC Senior Vice President of Policy and Political Affairs JoDee Winterhof said that House Speaker Paul Ryan and Republican House leadership have “a responsibility to immediately condemn Representative Allen’s vile and dangerous remarks. … At a time when LGBT people face staggering rates of discrimination, harassment and violence, Representative Allen’s comments spread hate that does real harm. Representative Allen should apologize or be censured — and Republican leaders must make clear that they will not tolerate lawmakers who sow hatred and violence against LGBT people.” More from HRC.

  • In another bizarre attack on LGBT rights, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R – TX) said last week that NASA would never choose to send same-sex couples into space. Rather, Gohmert said, it’s up to NASA to be a “modern-day Noah” and “perpetuate humanity and the wildlife kingdom.”

TEXAS ATTORNEY GENERAL KEN PAXTON’S EXTREME ANTI-TRANS MOTIVATIONS: A report in the Texas Tribune shows the incredibly ugly lengths Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is willing to take to target transgender students he’s supposed to be protecting. Paxton, who last week filed a federal lawsuit with government officials in 10 other states aimed at blocking federal nondiscrimination protections for transgender people, spent about two weeks trying to persuade a school board to implement anti-transgender student policies allowing him to sue the federal government. At least two districts were approached, including Wichita Falls, which after an hour-long conversation chose not to pass the anti-trans policy requested by Paxton. The AG currently faces three felony fraud indictments for violating state securities laws, civil fraud charges, and a separate investigation from the Texas State Bar for encouraging clerks to ignore the Supreme Court’s ruling on nationwide marriage equality.

HRC MOURNS AMOS BEEDE, TRANSGENDER MAN KILLED IN VERMONT: Amos Beede, a transgender man from Burlington, Vermont, has died from injuries he sustained during an assault last week. Beede suffered head trauma and a number of broken ribs. Though the investigation is still underway, Burlington police have “not ruled out the victim’s transgender status as a possible additional motive” to the killing, and believe that the attack was not random. More from the Burlington Free Press.

HOW THE TABLES TURN… DISGRACED ALABAMA JUSTICE ROY MOORE NOW WANTS FEDS TO PROTECT HIM: Roy Moore, the disgraced Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice removed from the bench earlier this month for refusing to comply with the historic Obergefell ruling, is now alleging the state violated his civil rights in removing him – and is suing Alabama in the same federal courts whose rulings he defied. Moore is the subject of an ongoing inquiry into ethics charges filed by the Judicial Inquiry Commission stemming from his instruction to Alabama probate judges to ignore the U.S. Supreme Court’s marriage equality ruling and refuse to perform marriages for same-sex couples. Under Alabama’s constitution Moore must be removed from his position while the ethics charges are pending. Now, Moore has filed a complaint in federal court saying that he’s the one suffering a great injustice, and that the provision used to remove him is denying him of “life, liberty or property without due process of law.” Moore was previously removed from the bench in 2003 for an ethics complaint related to failing to comply with a federal court order.  Can’t make it up, folks. More #NoMoore from BuzzFeed.

OKLAHOMA LEGISLATURE ADJOURNS WITHOUT PASSING ANY OF THE STATE’S 29 ANTI-LGBT BILLS: The Republican-controlled Oklahoma Legislature adjourned for the year on Friday without passing any of the 29 heinous anti-LGBT bills that were introduced. This included the anti-transgender Senate Bill 1619, which would have forced schools to make accommodations for students who purported to have religious objections to sharing a sex-segregated space with transgender students. Going a step further, the legislation also strangely stated that allowing students with religious objections to use a single-user facility was not an acceptable accommodation.

NEW FILM HIGHLIGHTS TRANSGENDER SERVICEMEMBERS AND VETERANS: A new feature length film, TransMilitary, highlights the story of courageous men and women who came out as transgender while serving in the U.S. military. The film features service members at all levels, including top brass inside the Pentagon. According to the Palm Center, there are approximately 15,500 actively-serving transgender members of the U.S. military, making the Department of Defense (DOD) the largest employer of transgender people in America. Meanwhile, transgender service members are still sitting in limbo as they await new guidelines from DOD officials permitting them to the right to serve openly. More from HRC.

A GROWING FAMILY TREE: 16 couples share their heartwarming stories of building their LGBT families, chronicling their journeys through pregnancies, adoptions, and the sense of purpose their children have given them. HRC was also proud to mark National Foster Care Month with the launch of HRC Foundation and FosterClub’s #FosterEquality campaign. Throughout the month, we have shared stories of LGBTQ youth in foster care and agencies that are working to improve their practices with LGBTQ youth. The final story of the month comes from Tristan, a transgender teen who learned to advocate for himself in the foster care system.

JOURNEY TO BIRTHRIGHT: A group of 40 Jewish LGBTQ young adults left for Israel on Monday as part of a trip sponsored by Birthright, which provides journeys for young people seeking to strengthen their Jewish roots. During the trip, the group will be learning about Israel’s LGBTQ history and attending the Tel Aviv Pride Parade on June 3. More from The Jerusalem Post.

Documentary 'The State of Marriage' brings LGBT history to your screen

Photo Credit: The State of Marriage

Documentary The State of Marriage, about the two-decade struggle for marriage equality in Vermont, premieres today on iTunes and On Demand video services. Director Jeff Kaufman and producer Marcia Ross teamed up in 2013 to capture the untold story of how Mary Bonauto of Gay & Lesbian Advocates and Defenders partnered with small town attorneys Beth Robinson and Susan Murray in a grassroots struggle for marriage equality in the state.

In a 2014 interview with GLAAD, Kaufman and Ross said about the film, “We want everyone to have the same experience we had making The State of Marriage, which is to be deeply moved by the stories of these courageous couples who helped blaze the trail for so many others.” Check out the trailer below.

Vermont was the first state to introduce civil unions for same-sex couples in 2000 after the state Supreme Court heard the case on appeal by Bonauto, Robinson, and Murray. In 2009, Vermont became the first state to institute marriage equality by legislation.

Newfest, New York’s LGBT film festival, will be hosting a special screening of The State of Marriage and Q&A panel this Thursday, June 2 and you can get discounted tickets! Members and supporters of GLAAD can save and purchase tickets for $10 which include the screening, special panel, and cocktail reception. —–HANDOUT PHOTOS FREE FOR USE —–Jewish members of the LGBTQ community from across the United States visit the residence of Israeli President Reoven Rivlin in Jerusalem Tuesday May 31 2016. Jewish members of the LGBTQ community from across the United States embarked on a groundbreaking “See Israel with Pride” mission Thursday. The trip has been organized and led by the Jewish Federations of North America in partnership with A Wider Bridge, to experience Israeli culture, politics and character through a LGBTQ lens. The delegation, a 100-plus-strong group representing the full LGBT spectrum of Jewish America, will learn more about and deepen its connection with the Jewish state and its LGBT community.

The mission, the largest ever of its kind, will meet with top Israeli figures across many fields – including Israeli President Reuven Rivlin (Tuesday), U.S. Ambassador to Israel Daniel Shapiro (Thursday), innovators and leaders in the business and arts communities, and learn about efforts underway to advance LGBTQ rights in Israel. The delegation will also visit Yad Vashem for a Holocaust program focusing on the specific issues, motives and circumstances behind the persecution of LGBTQ individuals under the Third Reich. Finally, the seven-day mission will end with beginning of the Tel Aviv Pride Parade.

Led by Stuart Kurlander, former president of the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington, the group will not only experience Israel and its history, culture and food, but also will deepen its connection with the state of Israel.

“Despite all the many positive changes that have taken place in recent years, much work remains to create a fully inclusive Jewish community and more progress is needed to be made for the broader LGBTQ community as we still face civil rights challenges and continue to fight for fairness and equality in the workplace and in all aspects of life,” said Kurlander, chair of the Jewish Federations 2016 National LGBTQ mission to Israel. “This trip will allow us to stand in solidarity with Israeli members of the LGBTQ community who continue their own struggle for greater rights.”

Nick Jonas Admits He’d Be ‘Lying’ If He Said He’s Never Had Gay Sex

nrm_1412330525-nick-jonas-bulge-pictures-flaunt-shirtless-cosmopolitan-5

It’s a brave new era in which actors and entertainers bravely come outish; sticking a toe out of the closet for kicks and easy publicity.

James Franco has boldly admitted he’s “a little gay.” (Or “a little annoying,” depending on your publication.) Musician Olly Murs gets more specific and says he’s “20 percent gay.” And now, Nick Jonas has come forward to coyly confide to Britain’s The Sun that he “technically” can’t say he’s never hooked up with a man.

Related: Nick Jonas Doesn’t Deny Hooking Up With Guys; Hope Is Alive.

Nick-Jonas-shared-shirtless-picture-caption-I-never-do“Technically,” that’s what he didn’t not not say:

The star’s sexuality has been a hot topic after he revealed he had filmed a gay sex scene for his role in Kingdom, the US martial arts drama series.

But he assured me his only sexual experience with a man was in front of the cameras. He said:

“On Kingdom I have a sex scene with a guy. It is always this thing have I, has Nick? No. But it’s my lips, it’s my hands, it’s my body, even if I’m playing a character. So technically I have done that, so I wouldn’t say I haven’t, because that would be lying. But as me, Nick, I am very open about who I am and that I have nothing to prove. I know what I am, I’ve been honest about that.”

While we’re having a hard time getting past the Yoda-esque mantra “It is always this have I, has Nick?,” we’re also making ourselves dizzy trying to parse out his steamy slew of double negatives into a straightforward and cohesive statement.

Correct us if we’re wrong, but it appears that “technically” he can’t say he’s never gotten sexy with men–because he’s had sex scenes with men, and touched those men with his real hands.

Does this mean actors should now be held accountable for the acts of their characters? This opens up a frightening new world for actors.

After all, if we apply this logic to, say, character actor Robert Englund, he’s responsible for the death of hundreds:

Fairuza Balk possesses frightening occult powers and should be hanged or drowned or whatever:

Neil Patrick Harris is dead.

Amos Beede Transgender Murder Victim Vermont

A transgender man has died of injuries including head trauma, facial fractures and broken ribs following a reported attack in a Vermont homeless shelter.

Despite a positive initial prognosis, Amos Beede (38) of Milton, Vermont died Sunday at the University of Vermont Medical Center.

There have been a large number of recent violent assaults on transgender people in the U.S. In January, 23-year-old Monica Loera was murdered in Texas. In February, a 25-year-old man pleaded guilty to the fatal beating of trans woman Islan Nettles.

The National Center for Transgender Equality has noted that homelessness is a critical issue for transgender people:

“One in five transgender individuals have experienced homelessness at some point in their lives. Family rejection and discrimination and violence have contributed to a large number of transgender and other LGBQ-identified youth who are homeless in the United States – an estimated 20-40% of the more than 1.6 million homeless youth.”
