HRC Foundation Pulls Nationally-Acclaimed Time to THRIVE Conference Out Of Tennessee

The HRC Foundation announced today that it is pulling its 2017 Time to THRIVE conference for educators, counselors and other youth-serving professionals out of Nashville because of recent actions by Tennessee lawmakers in passing a law targeting LGBTQ youth.

The move from Tennessee is supported by the National Education Association (NEA) and the American Counseling Association (ACA), both Time To THRIVE co-presenters. The ACA earlier this month announced it also is pulling its 2017 annual conference and expo out of Nashville.

Time to THRIVE has been relocated to Washington, D.C., and will be held April 28-30, 2017.

“When Tennessee legislators pushed a needless and mean-spirited counseling discrimination law, we knew that Time to THRIVE, which brings together professionals dedicated to the safety and inclusion of LGBTQ youth, could not be held as planned in Nashville,” said Dr. Vincent Pompei, Conference Chair and Director of HRC Foundation’s Youth Well-Being Project. “Tennessee lawmakers have allowed professional counselors to put personal religious beliefs over the needs of LGBTQ youth, whose very well-being is Time to THRIVE’s focus.”

“We are very troubled by the new Tennessee law, which is the worst I’ve seen passed in my 30 years with the ACA,” said Richard Yep, CEO of ACA. “This law directly targets the counseling profession, and would deny services to those most in need, including LGBTQ youth, in clear violation of our members’ code of ethics. That’s why we won’t hold our own conference in Nashville, and why we support moving Time to THRIVE out of Tennessee as well.”

In its fourth year, Time to THRIVE is the premier event of the HRC Foundation. The conference addresses safety, inclusion and well-being for LGBTQ youth, bringing together hundreds of youth-serving professionals to discuss best practices for working with and caring for LGBTQ youth and their families in schools, community centers, healthcare settings, and beyond.

According to Growing Up LGBT In America, HRC Foundation’s groundbreaking survey of more than 10,000 LGBTQ young people, LGBTQ youth in the United States still face unique challenges. Only half of LGBTQ youth surveyed say that they “fit in” with their community; LGBTQ youth are more than twice as likely to be verbally harassed at school; and 63 percent of LGBTQ youth say they will need to move to another part of the country to feel accepted.

Time to THRIVE is the premier national convening of educators, professional counselors, and other youth-serving professionals to build awareness and cultural competency, learn current and emerging best practices, and gather resources from leading experts and national organizations in the field.  To register, visit www.TimeToThrive.org.

Josh Charnley is an English professional rugby league footballer for the Wigan Warriors of Super League, which we know next to nothing about.

Where we do find common ground, though, is in a recently circulated selfie Charnley took. Been there, done that, so to speak.

How do you think Charnley did?

Did he do his team proud or should he check out our hard-hitting piece, Nude Pic Etiquette: Five Tasteful Tips For Photographing Your Junk, and get back up on that horse?

In Washington, D.C. this week and have some time on your hands? How about hate group Family Research Council’s (FRC) annual Watchmen on the Wall National Briefing, a who’s who of anti-everything religious right activists.

FRC head honcho Tony Perkins, usually relatively quiet on Twitter, has gone into overdrive promoting the highly profitable conference which will include contributions from the likes of – deep breath – Phil Bryant, Anne Graham-Lotz, Bob Emrich, Pastor Garrett Booth, Pastor Charles Flowers, Perkins himself and many, many others.

Paul, an educated man, said if we are to be truly wise in the sight of God, we will be foolish in the eyes of man. -> 1 Cor 3:18-20

Internet Sleuths Discover Adorable Lesbian Couple In Pixar’s ‘Finding Dory’ Trailer

Internet Sleuths Discover Adorable Lesbian Couple In Pixar’s ‘Finding Dory’ Trailer

finding-dory-voice-cast

There’s been a lot of talk lately about introducing gay characters to popular Hollywood franchises, from Captain America to Disney’s Frozen.

And while we’re sure the demand for queer main characters will rage on, some eagle-eyed Disney fans think they’ve spotted the first LGBTQ Pixar characters in the recently released UK trailer for Finding Dory. And no, it’s not “Dory,” voiced by Ellen Degeneres.

The maybe-lesbian couple pop up in a scene at an aquarium, and as far as speculation goes, it seems pretty believable that it’s what the animators were going for.

We can almost hear One Million Moms’ desperate cry for a boycott coming from a mile away.

Take a look:

Not to over-generalize, but we’ve known more than a few lesbians over the years who fit the bill.

We think this is one cute couple!

You can watch the trailer below — the ladies come in around the 1:10 mark:

Which Closeted Hollywood Actor Hates His Fans And Complains Of Being Only Worth $4 Million?

Which Closeted Hollywood Actor Hates His Fans And Complains Of Being Only Worth $4 Million?

man-face-hidden

It’s probably best that this supposed Hollywood star is choosing to remain anonymous, as his Reddit rant just oozes with entitlement and privilege.

In a post titled “[No Remorse] I dislike my fans,” an account by the name “westmailu” introduces himself by writing, “I am an actor. Well-known. A few of my movies are among the top-grossing in history. I started out as a child actor and fortunately have worked ever since.”

Then he opens the flood gates:

  1. I hate my fans. Appreciate them but hate them. I hate them because they hound and harass me. I am not an attention whore. I don’t tip off the paps, party, etc. I usually enjoy being by myself. I can’t even be open about being gay. What really irks me is how fans call me by this character’s name and start touching me and asking for pictures like I am one of those guys dressed like a Transformer on Hollywood/Vine. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll always chat and take a picture with a fan if they are cool or for a young fan, but most people are assholes.
  2. I hate the way they ask me for money and think I have money. I see these sites where fans will say I am worth like $20 million. BITCH PLEASE. I am worth more like $4 million. And I don’t even live a lavish style. Far from it. I may get four movie offers ranging from $1 – 4 million. I probably take a quarter of that at the end. Most often I turn down the higher-paying movies because they will do the most damage to your career. Sometimes I won’t get any offers. I have tons of expenses. I have to pay lawyers, accountants, family, etc. Don’t even get me started on taxes. Also, if I ever become disabled or can’t work anymore, then I am fucked.
  3. They think that I can get them work. No I can’t. That pisses me off more than anything.
  4. My life is not that glam. Most famous people are not that interesting. They’re uneducated. They’re ignorant. They’re paranoid. They’re full of themselves.

Yikes.

Aside from some probably accurate descriptions of some fellow famous people, you’ll likely have a hard time mustering up a tear for any of this mystery man’s grievances. It really is lonely up there at the top, isn’t it?

He goes on in the comments to say: “I don’t have friends. Many Hollywood people just want to party and many non-Hollywood people expect that your friendship will enrich them in some way,” adding, “can’t tell you how many times non-Hollywood ’friends’ have hit me up for money, work or contacts… I can’t even say that I am a gay guy because it will hurt my career.”

Since this clearly begs for speculation, some names like Taylor Lautner and Elijah Wood have been floated, but he could just as likely be a bored mother of four in Duluth, Minnesota.

Either way, one commenter summed it up best: “Christ, what an asshole.”
