At Saturday’s 27th Annual GLAAD Media Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, the HBO biopic Bessie received the award for Outstanding TV Movie or Limited series. Actress and musician Queen Latifah, executive producer and star of Bessie, accepted the award.

The HBO film Bessie tells the story of Bessie Smith, the legendary bisexual jazz and blues singer, known as “The Empress of Blues.” A cultural icon of the ’20s and ’30s, Bessie follows the story of Smith’s career and her personal life, including relationships with both men and women. The film also stars Michael K Williams, Khandi Alexander, Mo’Nique as queer blues singer Ma Rainey, and Tika Sumpter as Lucille, a performer and Bessie’s love interest. Bessie is written and directed by out filmmaker Dee Rees. Rees also wrote and directed the film Pariah which received the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Film – Limited Release at the 23rd Annual GLAAD Media Awards. Bessie won four Primetime Emmy Awards including Outstanding Television Movie.

Freeform’s sci-fi drama Shadowhunters wraps its first season Tuesday. After his kiss with Magnus, Alec faces his parents who don’t approve of his decision. The Netflix original series Sense8 took home the Outstanding Drama Series Award at the 27th Annual GLAAD Media Awards at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on Saturday. Sense8 showrunner and co-creator Lilly Wachowski accepted the award, presented by the stars of Fox’s hit series “Scream Queens,” Lea Michele and Keke Palmer. This is the show’s first season and first nomination for a GLAAD Media Award.

Sense8, co-created by both Wachowski sisters, follows the lives of eight strangers around the world who all are mysteriously mentally and emotionally connected. Among these characters are Nomi, a blogger and hacker who happens to be transgender and lives with her girlfriend, Amanita, in San Francisco. Another of the sensates is Lito, a closeted gay Mexican actor, and his boyfriend Hernando. In an interview with GLAAD, actress Jamie Clayton, who portrays Nomi on the show, said that she values the uniqueness of the LGBT storylines in the series and that Nomi’s story “isn’t about her transition…her transness. Her story is about strength, courage and love.”
Premiering on Netflix in June 2015, the first season of Sense8 received wide acclaim by audiences and critics alike for its ambitious storytelling and inclusive cast. The series has been renewed for a second season which is currently filming.

At Saturday’s 27th Annual GLAAD Media Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, docuseries I Am Jazz and I Am Cait tied to take home the award for Outstanding Reality Program. Stars Jazz Jennings and Caitlyn Jenner took the stage to accept their awards, presented by NeNe Leakes and Derek Hough, and spoke about the importance of transgender representation.

I Am Cait premiered on E! in July, 2015. The series, currently airing its second season, documents Jenner’s life after her transition. The series speaks to Jenner’s relationship with her friends and family, as well as what it means to be a transgender woman in the spotlight including highlighting the voices of several notable trans women.
The docuseries I Am Jazz also premiered in July 2015 (TLC) and gives insight in to a different trans experience, that of a teenage girl. The series follows 15-year-old Jazz Jennings, known as one of the youngest transgender advocates, as she navigates her life at home and entering high school. Renewed for a second season, I Am Jazz promotes themes of acceptance among the families of transgender youth, and explores the experience of growing up trans.

Each year, GLAAD’s Stephen F. Kolzak Award is presented to an LGBT media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equality and acceptance.

Ruby Rose is an actress, model, DJ, and LGBT advocate who identifies as lesbian and gender fluid. Last year, she became known for her portrayal of Stella Carlin on the Netflix showOrange is the New Black. In 2017, she is slated to star in XXX: The Return of Xander Cage, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter,and John Wick: Chapter Two. Rose also came into the public eye by writing and starring in the short film Break Free in 2014, which spoke about gender fluidity and gender nonconformity. The film went viral, making Rose one of the most known advocates for the gender nonconforming community.
In addition to acting, Rose has performed as a DJ internationally, including acting as MTV Australia’s VJ in 2007. Over the years, she has appeared in Elle, Vogue, and GQamong many other publications. Rose continues to use her public image for advocacy for the LGBT community.
Previous Stephen F. Kolzak Award honorees include Laverne Cox, Wanda Sykes, Chaz Bono, Robert Greenblatt, Melissa Etheridge, Bill Condon, Todd Haynes, Alan Ball, Ellen DeGeneres, and Sir Ian McKellen.
