The GLAAD Wrap: Netflix announces premieres, renewals; Andrew Haigh to direct McQueen biopic

Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBT-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.
1) Naz & Maalik opens today in limited release before rolling out to DVD and video on demand through Wolfe next Tuesday. The film follows two closeted Muslim teens in Brooklyn as they find themselves under investigation by an FBI agent who witnesses someone attempting to sell the boys a gun. Check out the trailer below.
2) Andrew Haigh (Looking, Weekend) has been named as the director of an upcoming biopic about out fashion designer Alexander McQueen who passed away in 2010. McQueen designed the wardrobe for David Bowie’s 1996-1997 tours before going on to work as a head designer at Givenchy and then launching his own label; he won “British Designer of the Year” four times and was awarded the CBE. There is no production date yet announced.
3) The new sci-fi short film Credence is out now through Vimeo’s on demand service. The film, which was crowdfunded by supporters around the world, follows two fathers who decide to make the ultimate sacrifice to save their daughter after an asteroid hits the moon causing significant weather changes which threaten humanity. You can watch the trailer below and view the full film on Vimeo for $5.99.
4) Netflix has announced a number of premiere dates and series renewals. The second season of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt will premiere globally April 15, Grace and Frankie returns May 6, season four of Orange is the New Black premieres June 17. Marvel’s Jessica Jones was also officially renewed for a second season.
5) Logo this week announced some new programming coming to the network in 2016, including broadcasting the 27th Annual GLAAD Media Awards this spring. Tickets are available now. Logo will also premiere the new sketch comedy series Gay Skit Happens with four, half-hour episodes. The first, themed on Valentine’s Day, will be hosted by Daniel Franzese of the upcoming Freeform series Recovery Road. Cocktails & Classics, hosted by Michael Urie, will return for a third season in 2016.
6) The BBC Two rom-com series Boy Meets Girl has been renewed for a second season to air this year. The series follows the relationship between Judy (Rebecca Root), a transgender woman, and her younger boyfriend Leo. The second season will see Judy befriending a young trans man while Leo focuses on furthering his career.
7) Lifetime’s UnREAL has announced that there will be a spinoff 10-episode webseries focusing on Faith, a contestant on the Bachelor-esque series within the show who viewers found out was a closeted lesbian in the first season. She left the show to be with her girlfriend Amy and the spinoff will follow them as the girls move from their home state of Mississippi to Los Angeles and how their lives change. In other TV news, out screenwriter Phyllis Nagy (Carol) will be adapting the novel Telex From Cuba as a television series with plans to create and serve as showrunner should the series be picked up.
8) The Critics’ Choice Awards took place this Sunday. Transparent star Jeffrey Tambor took home the award in Best Actor in a Comedy Series with Andre Braugher winning in Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy series for his portrayal of Captain Holt on Brooklyn Nine-Nine. LGBT-inclusive series Master of None and Mr. Robot won in Best Comedy Series and Best Drama Series respectively, BoJack Horseman won Best Animation Series, and Fargo won Best Movie Made for Television or Limited Series.
9) Hunter Valentine has dropped the new single “Blackout Nights” from their upcoming final EP The Pledge, out February 14.
