Sia Under Fire for Promoting Trump SNL Appearance with ‘Queer Immigrant’ Joke

Sia Under Fire for Promoting Trump SNL Appearance with ‘Queer Immigrant’ Joke

Sia has come under fire from immigration activists and some of her fans for joining Donald Trump in promos for their SNL appearance on Saturday night.

Sia tweeted a photo of Trump in one of her trademark two-tone wigs, saying “Trying to give @realDonaldTrump a taste of life as a queer immigrant. Not sure it’s working..?More tomorrow!”

Fans were quick to respond, saying: “@Sia I can’t believe you’re being a part of this. Trump is a blatant racist and is against equality for women. Why would you endorse this?”

Another user, asked, “@Sia So I guess you’re okay with Trump saying those things about Mexicans. Maybe not so okay had he said them about LGBT people?”

Others had hoped Sia would pull out:  “@Sia not funny, trumps’s racist & anti gay views is a serious threat to our country- was hoping u pull out of @nbcsnl in protest #DumpTrump

A petition to drop Trump as host gathered more than half a million signatures, and Congressman Luis Gutierrez has been battling the network to stop him. But not all agree with the tactics.

Hispanic activist, actress and prominent Clinton supporter Eva Longoria told The Wrap last week:

“This is part of freedom of speech, freedom of press. He has his right — not only that, [executive producer] Lorne Michaels has a right to book whoever he wants…. We as a Hispanic community have a choice to not watch it. That’s our choice,” she continued. “That’s what we can do. That’s what you’re supposed to do. Boycott that night, and then let that show feel that ‘oh, OK we did make a bad decision.’ You cannot limit that choice to producers or a network. That’s their choice to do that. But what you can do is [say], ‘OK you made that choice, therefore we will do this.’”

College Dance Student Raises $60K For Tuition After Parents Disown Him For Being Gay – VIDEO

College Dance Student Raises $60K For Tuition After Parents Disown Him For Being Gay – VIDEO

Andrew.Joel

A gay college dance student whose parents forced him into “reparative therapy” and kicked him out of the house has raised more than $60,000 online to pay for his tuition.

Joel Andrew, 18, is a freshman in the prestigious dance program at Oklahoma City University. When Andrew came out to his parents at 12, they sent him to reparative therapy, The Oklahoman reports:

So Andrew began attending weekly counseling sessions where he and a counselor talked about “gay” or effeminate things he’d done that week. The counselor told him how to resist those urges, he said.

While in counseling, Andrew kept in mind a practice his denomination encouraged called “praying through,” spending hours in prayer until a breakthrough comes. Andrew tried it, believing that if he prayed long and hard, he could become straight.

“Every night, I would pray to God to make me straight,” he said. “It didn’t work.”

Last year, after Andrew began dating another guy, his parents kicked him out of their Michigan home. They also refused to sign student loan documents so he could attend OCU, and demanded that he stop using his last name.

Unable to pay for school, Andrew initially feared he’d have to return home after one semester, but then the daughter of his dance instructor launched a GoFundMe page with the goal of raising $6,500 to pay for his second semester.

Thanks to support from Dan Savage, the page had raised $60,376 as of Saturday, enough to pay for all four years of Andrew’s tuition. Andrew’s parents deny his account, but Savage spoke with friends who corroborated his story.

“What a few months ago seemed impossible now seems achievable,” Andrew wrote in a thank you note on the GoFundMe page. “I’m blown away by the support and words of encouragement from friends, supporters, and strangers. If I had known before that so many people would love me and support me after coming out, I would have done it a long time ago. When I first heard the words ‘It Gets Better,’ I was skeptical; I didn’t believe it was possible. I thought I would be stuck in my small town, surrounded by people who didn’t like me, doing something I hated. Now I will have the chance to make something of myself and all of you have had a huge part in making that dream a reality.”

Savage is now encouraging people to donate instead to the Point Foundation or the Ali Forney Center.

“There are a lot of Joels out there,” he told The Oklahoman.

WATCH: After RFRA, More Indianans Support LGBT Protections

WATCH: After RFRA, More Indianans Support LGBT Protections

More than seven months after Indiana’s disastrous Religious Freedom Restoration Act was signed into law, a clear majority of Indiana residents say they support laws to protect lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgender people from discrimination, according to a new poll.

The annual survey by Indianapolis TV station WISH and Ball State University found 56 percent of Indiana residents in favor of LGBT protections, while 36 percent of those polled opposed adding such protections, WISH reports.

The poll also showed the approval rating for Gov. Mike Pence, who in April buckled under pressure to sign a “fix” to Indiana’s RFRA, had sunk below 50 percent. The original version of the law had been criticized as a “license to discriminate” against LGBT people.

Opponents of LGBT protections dismissed the results, arguing respondents could be confused about the actual meaning of an antidiscrimination law.

“That means you’re silencing people who disagree with homosexuality or believe men should not be allowed in women’s restrooms,” Micah Clark, a conservative lobbyist who leads the American Family Association of Indiana, told The Indianapolis Star.

He told the paper he prefers the results of an Associated Press poll that showed a majority  — 51 percent —  want the government to protect religious liberties over the rights of gays and lesbians.

Clark also pointed to Houston’s vote to repeal the city’s ordinance banning discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity and numerous other characteristics.

“You don’t fix a so-called problem of discrimination by discriminating against people of faith and people who hold to personal values,” Clark told the paper.

Also Thursday, the Indiana Chamber of Commerce announced it supports adding sexual orientation and gender identity to Indiana’s civil rights law.

But analysts say if Indiana Republicans want to save the state’s stained reputation and soothe the worries of local corporations, these poll results and the chamber’s influence may be just the motivation to swallow a bitter pill and pass LGBT protection legislation, said Andy Downs, a political science professor at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne.

In doing so, Downs told the Star, Republicans could boast their party is responsible for passing civil rights protections and at the same time rob Democrats of the same talking point.

Watch a report from WISH on the poll numbers, below.

Casual Transphobia in My Media?

Casual Transphobia in My Media?
It’s more likely than you think. Entertainment media has been able to get away with perpetuating and reinforcing subtle hatred for a very long time. It’s easy to think that we’re making progress, but are we really?

Imagine for a moment that you’re sitting down to your favorite sitcom, and in this week’s episode, our main character can’t get a date. His best buddy buys him an escort, and the man is terrified until his friend reassures him that he would never “stick [him] with some toothless tr*nny from Port Authority.” The laugh track plays, and no one watching at home gives a second thought to the careless use of that word, but “tr*nny” is not a synonym for transgender. It’s a slur that carries a long history of hatred, violence and oppression.

For the most part, it seems like society recognizes that slurs have no place on tv or in our daily language, but cisgender (non-trans) people call me a “tr*nny” all the time. I don’t take kindly to it. That’s not their word to use, and for the most part, even we don’t use it. I try to explain that word is a slur but they just tell me to “chill,” because “no one likes an angry tr*nny.” Slurs have power. They carry institutionalized hatred based on myths and stereotypes, and serve to create a hostile environment, which can often claim lives.

Is it really that bad? Let’s get back to our show and see. Several seasons later, our main character is on a date and none of his friends seem to like this girl at all. He wonders if she might have had a man framed for rape (a whole other bucket of misogyny in and of itself), or if she might get off on killing puppies, but then he has an even worse thought as he imagines excusing himself to use the restroom, after which his date ponders aloud if he might be using the urinal, reminiscing about when she had a penis. It paints a picture that transness is somehow worse than murdering baby animals, and society laughs, and they learn to see us as deviants, predators and tricksters, when the reality is that somewhere right now another transgender youth is taking their own life, and another transwoman of color is being murdered by her lover as a result of the impacts of tasteless jokes and blind ignorance.

Casual transphobia is the root of all transphobia. It’s not the overt things like zealots in the streets with “god hates trannies” signs, or a man smashing a glass into a transwoman’s face. Instead, it serves to enable and justify true hatred, and convince society, and even us that we are worth inherently less because of our transness.

It’s the subtle things, like total strangers asking us the most intimate questions, and paying us back-handed “compliments” that treat transness as a negative. It’s every story from a straight cis person about a “gay cousin” that “proves” they “don’t judge.” It’s realizing you’re someone’s token trans friend, or being asked by a stranger to help her settle a bet with her friends as to whether or not you’re “really a guy

It’s every time a cisgender actor gets cast for the leading role of a trans character in a film about trans lives written, directed and produced by a cis team for a cisgender audience, and it’s the people rolling their eyes right now at my abundant use of the word “cisgender” instead of “normal” who don’t understand that the word “cisgender” is absolutely necessary and in no way offensive because transgender people are normal.

The saddest part is that cis, or trans, we have all unintentionally contributed to an environment that carelessly ends trans lives without knowing any better. You might not want to harm trans people, but that’s the thing about casual transphobia; It doesn’t need to have true hate behind it to be real and harmful. The good news is that it’s really easy to change so much just by learning to educate ourselves, challenge our norms and recognize that if a trans person says something is harmful to trans people, it is harmful to trans people. The knee-jerk reaction is to defend ourselves and try to justify it, but this is wrong, and it’s not hard to learn to acknowledge our privilege, apologize, start educating ourselves and others. And you know what? It’s okay. We are all human and we all make mistakes. The important part is owning up and fixing them.

And speaking of fixing things, let’s get back to our sitcom. Because as much as I wish it was only hypothetical, it’s not. It’s How I Met Your Mother, and it somehow even won a GLAAD Award for “fair, inclusive and accurate depictions of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender communities.” in spite of continuing season after season, with many more examples than I can list here, to use it’s main character’s rather paranoid level of transphobia as one of it’s main comedic staples.

I hope the irony at least gives you pause, because I can’t fathom it. And I hope we can all see the need to eliminate casual transphobia, because in the end, it’s not just a joke. It costs trans lives, and it shouldn’t be so hard to stop clinging to this lazy, tired, unfunny brand of “humor.” Bigoted, ignorant humor isn’t sacred. Trans lives are sacred. Is a shift in language so much to ask to save those lives?
