Right-Wingers Vow to Undo Marriage Equality at World Conference of Families

Lest anyone think marriage equality is a settled issue, this week’s World Congress of Families meeting in Salt Lake City provided a reminder that antigay activists don’t agree — and they’re determined to somehow undo the Supreme Court’s landmark pro-equality ruling.

“All the court did, as significant as it was, is put a lie into the law,” National Organization for Marriage president Brian Brown told the “family values” gathering Wednesday, according to The Salt Lake Tribune. He called on attendees to do all they can to fight the ruling, even if it takes decades and a new set of justices appointed by conservative presidents.

As many on the right have done, Brown likened the marriage equality ruling to the 1857 Dred Scott decision upholding slavery, and urged his audience to make a stand for so-called traditional marriage as “martyrs” did for other causes.

“We should savor the fact that we live at a point in history, like those times before, in which we can stand for the truth … and God has put us here,” he said, according to the Tribune. “This fight is not over.”

He also sought to rally support for the First Amendment Defense Act, a piece of federal legislation that would protect individuals, businesses, and organizations from repercussions over actions they take out of a religious or moral objection to same-sex marriage.

Still, he warned, “there is no way that religious liberty will be completely protected in this country as long as this decision stands.”

Others sounding the alarm over marriage equality included Rev. Rafael Cruz, the father of Republican presidential hopeful Ted Cruz. The elder Cruz made the false claim that because of the Supreme Court ruling, “it will be possible for some homosexual to come to your church demanding to be hired, whether as pastor or janitor is immaterial,” Right Wing Watch reports.

Cruz also told BuzzFeed the LGBT movement’s next move will be seeking to legalize pedophilia, and that nondiscrimination laws will lead to teaching about sexual orientation and gender identity in public schools, which he says are already “brainwashing” children.

Another antigay speaker on Wednesday, which was designated “Marriage and Natural Family Day” at the conference, was Family Research Council attorney Cathy Ruse, who ignored history by claiming, “Who you love has never been the government’s business until now,” as quoted by the Tribune.

The World Congress of Families is a project of the Howard Center for Family, Religion, and Society, based in Rockford, Ill. The center bills itself as “a center for research on the natural family” and calls the congress “the world’s premier pro-family gathering.” The center and the congress, which are strongly opposed to abortion as well as LGBT equality, together are designated as an anti-LGBT hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center and have been accused of complicity in anti-LGBT legislation around the world.

This year’s World Congress, the ninth, marked the first time it was held in the U.S. LGBT activists had called on Utah Gov. Gary Herbert to cancel his appearance at the conference, which he refused to do. He and his wife, Jeanette, gave a brief welcoming address to the gathering Tuesday night, “avoiding mention of any specific hot-button political issues,” Salt Lake City’s Deseret News reports.

A few days earlier, Herbert defended his decision to be at the conference, the Tribune reports. He told reporters he might not agree with everything said there, but “they’re welcome in our state, just like other people who have different points of view in other areas. We’re not all the same. And we invite diversity and difference of opinions in Utah.”

Ahead of the meeting, the Human Rights Campaign took out an ad in the Tribune denouncing the World Congress, and it held its own Inclusive Families Conference, also in Salt Lake City. It also published a report exposing the hateful ideas espoused by the World Congress.

The World Congress ends Friday.

Michelle Rodriguez's Upcoming Gender Reassignment Thriller Is Already Causing Controversy

Michelle Rodriguez's Upcoming Gender Reassignment Thriller Is Already Causing Controversy

Michelle Rodriguez’s upcoming film won’t be in theaters until 2017, but it’s already getting backlash.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news Wednesday that Rodriguez will star in “Tomboy,” a thriller that centers around an assassin becoming victim to gender-reassignment surgery.

A description for the film reads:

The script, written by Hill from a story by Denis Hamill, centers on an ace assassin who is double-crossed by gangsters and falls into the hands of rogue surgeon known as “The Doctor,” who turns him into a woman. The hitman (now a hitwoman) sets out for revenge, aided by a nurse named Johnnie, who also has secrets.

GLAAD is not happy about the premise of the movie and says it could be a setback for the transgender community.

“We haven’t read the script, but it’s disappointing to see filmmakers turning what is a life-saving medical procedure for transgender people into a sensationalistic plot device,” Nick Adams, GLAAD’s Director of Programs for Transgender Media, said in a statement to The Huffington Post Friday. “We are at a crucial moment in the public’s understanding of transgender issues, and stories like these have the potential to undermine the progress we’ve worked so hard to achieve.”

“Tomboy” is set to start filming Nov. 9 in Vancouver, according to Deadline.com

Boy George Shocks Audience: “I Slept With Prince”

Boy George Shocks Audience: “I Slept With Prince”

Screen Shot 2015-10-30 at 11.13.47 AMBoy George made the surprising announcement that he’s frolicked between the sheets with Prince during a live taping of The Voice in the U.K.

George joined the show as a coach this season alongside Paloma Faith, will.i.am and Ricky Wilson, replacing Tom Jones.

During the blind auditions, the judges were trying to woo a contestant by one-upping each other’s past musical collaborations.

George boasted, “I have duetted with some of the greatest soul singers in history including Luther Vandross and Smokey Robinson,” prompting Paloma Faith to come back with, “Well OK, if we’re throwing big soul names out there I’ve performed with Prince.”

“Forget that, darling,” George quickly retorted. “I’ve slept with Prince.”

will.i.am high-fived George as the audience laughed in shock at the revelation, but the show’s producers weren’t quite as amused.

They halted taping to have a private conversation with George, and when the show resumed, he announced that he actually hadn’t slept with Prince after all, and had merely had a Prince poster on his wall.

In George’s defense, it’s so easy to confuse sleeping with someone and having a poster of someone. Happens to us all the time.

We’re not buying the retraction.

Prince has previously shared this sage Jehovah’s Witness wisdom on the subject homosexuality:

“God came to earth and saw people sticking it wherever and doing it with whatever, and he just cleared it all out. He was, like, ‘Enough.’”

If that’s not internalized homophobia, we’re not sure what is.

A man stranded in a tree after his car was washed away called an Austin TV station in an incredible video as flooding walloped Texas’ capital city on Friday morning.

“Basically I was just driving down the road and there was what I though was a little bit of water, and I just was driving through it like I would, and it swept my car sideways and then almost tipped me over,” Kerry Parker told KVUE-TV. “Thankfully, it didn’t. It probably swept me about half a mile into the woods, and as soon as the car was almost filled with water, I swept past a tree and I jumped out of the window and climbed up a tree, so I’m about 20 feet up a tree right now.”

No word on whether Parker has yet been rescued.

More on the flooding from Regional News Network:

Parts of Austin, TX are evacuating to higher ground as quickly rising floodwaters are threatening residents of low-lying areas.

The city of Austin, TX said several shelters have been opened for residents near Onion Creek, which has reached its highest point in recorded history, according to the National Weather Service.

The Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is closed after the ground floor of air traffic control was flooded by 6 inches of water.

The National Weather Service is reporting that more than 13 inches of rain has fallen since midnight Friday just south of Austin, TX.

Chef Rossi Talks New Book The Raging Skillet </em>and LGBT Equality (AUDIO)

Chef Rossi Talks New Book The Raging Skillet </em>and LGBT Equality (AUDIO)
2015-10-30-1446208823-4142679-HUFFRaging.jpg
This week I talked with Chef Rossi about her new must-read memoir The Raging Skillet. Chef Rossi’s story is a fabulous journey of cooking her way through some of life’s biggest challenges in New York City’s most unlikely kitchens. Talking her way into any cooking job she could get, Rossi is a self-taught and self-made entrepreneur who ended up owning one of the most sought-after catering companies in the city. Zagat dubbed her as “the wildest thing this side of the Mason-Dixon Line.” The book features anecdotes from a life of food spanning decades in NYC plus easy to follow recipes ranging from pizza bagels to tuna tartare completing each chapter. I talked to Chef Rossi about the inspiration for her new memoir and her spin on our LGBT issues.
LISTEN:

When asked what she would like to see happen for LGBT equality in the next few years Rossi stated:

I would love it if it wasn’t a question anymore. Now of course we have marriage equality but I would like it just to be so normal. Like you don’t really say ‘Oh I’m gay’ just like people don’t really say ‘Oh I’m straight.’ I would love it just to be part of the fabric of our lives. You’re gay, you’re straight, you’re black, you’re white, it’s all of one. We’re all equal, we’re all happy, we’re all loving, we all have the same rights. You know here in New York we’re spoiled because I can walk down the street holding my girlfriend’s hand and not have to worry. It was not always like that. There was a time even in New York when in Central Park men were throwing rocks at me and my girlfriend because we kissed. Nowadays I see young couples, gay couples, happily holding hand, not even thinking about that. They don’t have that trauma and I would love it if no one had that trauma. Generation after generation of nobody knowing what it’s like to be gay bashed. I’d like to go to Oklahoma and Arkansas on my book tour. I’m going to all these places, I just got back from Denver and I’ll be going to St Louis. I’d like to travel around the world and around the country and have it not be an issue. You know we’re all just people.

Chef Rossi is the catering director, owner and executive chef of The Raging Skillet catering for the past twenty-three years. She has earned a reputation as the go-to company for out-of-the-box catering and weddings. The Raging Skillet has been voted one of New York’s Top Five Wedding Caterers by The Knot from 2009 through 2015. The release date for her new Feminist Press memoir The Raging Skillet is scheduled for November 10th then kicking off the book tour at Henriettas in NYC on Nov 11th, followed by November 12th at WORD Bookstore in Jersey City, NJ at 7:30P, then November 17th at Powerhouse Arena in Brooklyn, NY at 7P, next November 19th at Trident Bookstore & Café in Boston, MA at 7P, followed by November 22nd at Preservation Hall in Wellfleet, MA at 3P and December 3rd at The Green Building in Brooklyn, NY at 6P for the Feminist Press Challahday Party. Chef Rossi is also currently touring with the Jewish Book Council.
