Here's What LGBT University Is and Why We Need It

As we settle into a post–marriage equality America, crucial work is already advancing to pass comprehensive nondiscrimination ordinances and block harmful legislation that would reverse our progress. In Houston, all hands are on deck to pass HERO (Houston’s Equal Rights Ordinance) early next month. In Massachusetts, the joint judiciary committee just wrapped up a hearing on a bill that would fully protect transgender people from discrimination in the state. And just a few weeks ago, we beat back a last-ditch attempt in North Carolina to prohibit cities and municipalities from passing nondiscrimination protections for their residents.

That’s only the beginning of a slew of legislation that will come forward over the next several months. With that anticipation, and with the momentum of the marriage movement still percolating throughout the country, Freedom for All Americans launched earlier this year as the national bipartisan campaign seeking to secure comprehensive nondiscrimination protections at the federal, state, and local levels. We’re enlisting organizers, communications strategists, digital gurus, and campaign veterans in various states to set the groundwork for victory. We’re engaging with businesses, faith leaders, Republicans and Democrats alike, and unexpected supporters in order to tell the full story of the strong majority of Americans who support full protections for LGBT people.

And as part of our efforts, a few weeks ago we wrapped up the first-ever launch of Freedom for All Americans’ LGBT University apprenticeship program. LGBT University is a new and innovative training program delivering issue, skill, and campaign trainings to the next wave of movement advocates and leaders. It is also the first training to identify one specific LGBT advocacy goal and bring together experts and rising campaign managers and organizers, in order to share their knowledge and skills. LGBT U’s apprenticeship program develops future nondiscrimination campaign managers and staff through a year-long training program. The first apprenticeship training was held in Phoenix in September.

Sixteen apprentices joined almost as many trainers and presenters for an intensive and experiential training about building successful campaigns to win nondiscrimination protections for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people in states and municipalities around the country. We had veteran managers of historic marriage campaigns talk about what it takes to win a ballot initiative. We had leaders in transgender storytelling discuss how to ensure your campaign is fully inclusive. We went over fundraising, budget allocation, and staffing. By the end of the week, we even held a mock competition where apprentices pitched sample campaign plans.

As director of the program, I’m proud of the work we’ve done so far and where LGBT U is headed. Both the presenters and the apprentices come from diverse backgrounds and are talented and dedicated. We have developed the kind of training that, as a former CEO of a state LGBT advocacy group, I wish I had gotten when starting this work. The curriculum we set forth in Phoenix is just the beginning of a year-long program in which the trainers will continue mentoring LGBT U apprentices, with monthly meetings, regular check-ins, and additional in-person trainings to keep developing leadership skills. Focusing on the single issue of nondiscrimination allows us to apply best practices to real-world campaign strategies; examine and hone our skills through interactive workshops; and now, hopefully, bring back what we’ve learned to put to use immediately. We hope to ultimately connect apprentices with opportunities at campaigns in their communities or elsewhere — and the time is now.

In more than half the country, LGBT people are not protected in housing, employment, or public accommodations. In a step backwards, legislators in my home state of Wisconsin recently introduced a bill that could force transgender children to use restrooms and locker rooms in school that do not correspond to their gender. Presidential candidates are spewing myths about gay and transgender people to promote their own platforms. As the work increases, Freedom for All Americans will keep ramping up its work, and LGBT U will become even more necessary.

Hillary Clinton Responds To 'Little Feminist's' Passionate Letter

Hillary Clinton Responds To 'Little Feminist's' Passionate Letter

A 12-year-old girl named Olivia, who has two dads and calls herself a “little feminist,” wrote an earnest letter to Hillary Clinton, which the presidential hopeful shared and responded to on her campaign website

In the letter, Olivia tells the former Secretary of State that she has two dads and a twin brother and that she attends a school for kids with disabilities in Brooklyn because she has dyslexia and ADHD.

“The school is fairly expensive, and I wish that there were more public schools that can help kids with dyslexia like me,” she wrote.

Olivia also volunteered to help with Clinton’s presidential campaign after school. “I bet I would be the youngest member of your campaign,” she said, adding, “I am huge fan of yours, and I really hope you become President.” The 12-year-old described herself as a “little feminist” who wants to help women achieve equal rights.

Olivia concluded her letter with one final note of hope and triumph: “By the way, I’m really glad that there is now gay marriage legal all around the whole 50 states of America!”

Clinton’s response to the letter is available in part on her campaign website. “Thank you for writing to me; it put a smile on my face. Please know that I join your dads in cheering you on for great success,” she wrote. “Keep up the great work, always care deeply about what you believe in, and never stop reaching for the stars!”

Go Olivia!

Open Question: LGBT, are you relieved there are no social pressures for us to have kids?
I simply don’t want to have kids. No way in hell am I going to get tied down by a little brat. A good thing, no one expects it out of LGBT, like they do straight people. I’m amazed at how many straight people just have kids, because it’s expected out of them to have kids by a certain age.

Prosecutors claim Port met all four men online. After getting together, he offered them large amounts of GHB. GHB, which is sometimes referred to as liquid ecstasy, lollipops, or liquid E, is a narcotic sedative that often results in loss of consciousness. In addition to murder, police are also charging Port with four counts of “administering a poison with intent to endanger life or inflict grievous bodily harm.”

Port is currently in custody waiting to appear before a judge on Wednesday.

Disney actor Garrett Clayton is set to play gay adult film star Brent Corrigan in an upcoming film King Cobra produced by James Franco and based on the real life murder of gay adult film producer Bryan Kocis.

Clayton previously starred in Teen Beach, Teen Beach 2, and appeared on ABC Family’s The Fosters. He also recently made a cameo in Todrick Hall’s Hocus Pocus parody.

The crime at the heart of King Cobra dates back to 2007 when Harlow Raymond Cuadra, 25 (below left), and Joseph Manuel Kerekes, 33 (below right), killed Kocis, owner of Cobra Video, in what police called a “misguided attempt to make it big” and lure Kocis’ big star (a then underage Brent Corrigan, née Sean Lockhart) away from Kocis.

Christian Slater is set to play Kocis. And to make 80s fanatics even more apoplectic, Molly Ringwald will also appear in the film.

Was the Vote Rigged for A Trans High School Homecoming Queen in New Jersey?

Was the Vote Rigged for A Trans High School Homecoming Queen in New Jersey?

A transgender teen was crowned homecoming queen at New Jersey’s Trenton Central High School this weekend, but outraged students and parents are claiming the vote was rigged in her favor. The elected homecoming king refused to “walk with another male” to accept his crown.

According to the Trentonian, a faculty member allowed students to stuff the ballot box because she wanted to “make history.” The unnamed staffer allegedly changed the voting location and left the ballot box unattended.

Parents and staff spoke to the newspaper to express their concerns, but most of the comments were transphobic and cast the teen as either a naive victim or ineligible to be elected because she is transgender. Some alleged fraud and others claimed the finaly tally was the result of a practical joke. Several parents questioned the teen’s gender, saying she should not have been allowed to run because it is “unfair to young females.”

One parent, Murf Antionette, told the Trentonian:

“We are not bashing the [transgender teen]; how [she] chooses to live [her] life is not our issue. But the teen is registered at the school as a male. So why was the teacher allowed to let this person compete with other females? No one at the school dislikes the [transgender teen], but this teacher had an ulterior motive. Students who were actually involved in the homecoming process claimed the teacher said she didn’t care if she lost her job, and that she wanted to make history. The teacher did not get permission from any administrator to do this.”

Ruffled parents claimed that the election would somehow send a message to other girls that “they’re not good enough” and that a separate category should have been created for LGBT teens. Only one person quoted in the story worried how the controversy could affect the teenage queen’s self-esteem.

School administrators were unavailable for comment, according to the Trentonian, which also attempted to reach the trans teen and her parents.

Vote for Sharon Valentine-Thomas and She Will Not Perform Her Duties

Vote for Sharon Valentine-Thomas and She Will Not Perform Her Duties
Sharon Valentine-Thomas, the Republican candidate for register of wills in Pennsylvania’s Montgomery County, wants to be the new Kim Davis. “I am opposed to gay marriages on religious grounds, and my conscience will not allow me to sign off on marriage certificates for gay couples,” Ms. Valentine Thomas stated recently. “People should not have to violate their conscience to run or to serve,” she believes. Although she plans to discriminate if elected, she is forging ahead with her campaign.

I am a resident, a gay resident, of Montgomery County. Ms. Valentine-Thomas will not get my vote despite her claims of not being an “obstructionist.” If elected, she will seek a court-ordered accommodation to allow her subordinates to do the dirty work of issuing marriage licenses to us gay folks.

If she proposes to pawn off her work, why should I vote for her? If she judges my marriage to be unacceptable, why would I want her to serve me in our local government?

Montgomery County was the first Pennsylvania county to issue licenses to same-sex couples. D. Bruce Hanes, the current register or wills (who is running for a third term against Ms. Valentine-Thomas) defied the discriminatory Pennsylvania law in 2013 and expanded the issuance of licenses to gay couples. My now-husband and I were the 25th pair to get one of these licenses in Pennsylvania.

If Ms. Valentine-Thomas were to be elected, would she refuse other services to us? The office handles petitions for adoptions and probates wills. If we wanted to bring a child into our home, would her religious beliefs bar her from granting adoption? If my husband passed away (heaven forbid), would it be against her conscience to deal with his estate? In a moment of intense personal grief, will I discover that the person elected to probate my husband’s will finds our marriage objectionable and his will invalid?

When I place a vote, I expect my chosen candidate to do the work for all of the people in the county, not just those she finds personally acceptable. Ms. Valentine-Thomas wants “to serve with the same landmark accommodations afforded to Kim Davis in Kentucky,” she states. But the circumstances are different here. First, the expansion of the law to allow same-sex marriages occurred while Kim Davis was in office. Ms. Valentine-Thomas has not been elected yet. Why is she seeking a job that violates her personal beliefs? Kim Davis’ “accommodation” to authorize her deputies to issue licenses was granted after much legal wrangling and jail time. It is questionable whether the licenses issued from her office are valid. This is not a model we should emulate in Montgomery County.

Some may say that I am hypocritical to support Mr. Hanes for defying the law while decrying Ms. Valentine-Thomas for refusing to follow the law. However, there is a significant difference in the actions of the two. Mr. Hanes wanted to do more for the citizens of the county, to open up the services of his office to everyone in the county equally. Ms. Valentine-Thomas seeks to limit the services she will provide, to restrict her work to serve those in the county that follow her personal belief system. Mr. Hanes is inclusive; Ms. Valentine-Thomas is not.

It is disappointing that Ms. Valentine-Thomas would approach a campaign for election with a statement of discrimination. Does she believe this will get her votes? Are the people in our county so prejudiced that they will elect a woman who plans to serve only part of the county’s constituency? To whom is she appealing? What kind of campaign is she launching here?

  • “I Don’t Like You / Vote for Me!”
  • “You Are an Abomination, Let Me Work for You!”
  • “Give Me the Job and I Will Get Someone Else To Do It!”
  • “Let’s Make America Discriminatory Again!”

Ms. Valentine-Thomas should not run for a job for which she is not fully prepared to commit. I cannot pick and choose whom I will serve in my job. I am a college professor. At the start of a semester, I do not read my class lists and decide which students I will teach and which I will refuse to teach. I am not permitted to point at two students and say, “I object to you on moral grounds” and ask them to leave. Even if I made accommodations for them to be tutored and to get the homework and notes from other students, I would not be doing my job.

Just as I must accept each student that qualifies to be in my classes, Ms. Valentine-Thomas must accept each citizen that lives in Montgomery County who wants to get a marriage license, or adoption approval, etc.

My vote goes to D. Bruce Hanes. He is the candidate who fought for my rights two years ago. He will do his job fully if re-elected.
