Gay Iconography: Long Live the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin

Gay Iconography: Long Live the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin

There are some figures whose revered status in the gay community never translates to mainstream accolades. But then there are some gay icons who not only inspire passion from LGBT fans, but leave an indelible mark on history. Take, for example, the Queen of Soul herself, Aretha Franklin.

Most people can rattle off a number of her hits off their top of their heads with relative ease. “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.” “Think.” “Chain of Fools.” “I Say A Little Prayer.” And, of course, “Respect.” She’s had more than 40 singles in the Billboard Top 40, more than 70 in the Top 100. She’s been honored with countless awards, including 18 Grammy Awards and the distinction of being the first female singer inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Her powerful voice and undeniable presence are not only responsible for some of the most cherished songs in the American songbook, but her music has become emblematic of the civil rights and feminist movements. It’s no wonder then that she’s also appealed to LGBT sensibilities.

Franklin herself comes from a deeply religious background. Her father was a passionate preacher and her earliest musical experiences were in the gospel style. Franklin is registered as a Democrat (performing memorably at President Barack Obama’s inaugural ceremony wearing what would become one of the most famous hats in history). While her support for the LGBT community has been less outwardly overt as someone like Cher, Madonna or Gaga, the 73-year-old superstar has sung at gay weddings.

Relive some of our favorite Aretha moments in the videos below.

Aretha’s early pop work began on Columbia Records. She would remain with Columbia through 1967, releasing albums Aretha: With the Ray Bryant Combo, The Electrifying Aretha Franklin and The Tender, the Moving, the Swinging Aretha Franklin. Her work on Columbia included the ballad “Runnin’ Out of Fools” (above), which hit the top ten on the R&B charts. (Folk singer Neko Case also does an outstanding cover version that’s not to be missed.)

When it comes to Franklin’s biggest hits, those came courtesy of her time on Atlantic Records. That’s where she released “Chain of Fools”, “Ain’t No Way”, “Think” and “I Say a Little Prayer.” Atlantic also released her most famous track “Respect,” which you can watch above.

Aretha moved labels again in the ‘80s, this time to Arista. Her track “Jump Into It” became her first top 40 single in more than six years. She worked on it with singer-songwriter Luther Vandross, a lifelong fan (and alleged closeted gay man himself).

If you’re a gay man over the age of 25, you’ll likely recall the gaysplosion that was the 1998 Divas Live Concert, where Aretha joined Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Gloria Estefan and Shania Twain on stage for the kind of performance that lends a lot more credence to the nurture side of the nature vs. nurture debate.

Six decades in the business and Aretha still makes her presence known. In 2014, her cover of Adele’s “Rolling In the Deep” became her 100th track to appear on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

Hillary Clinton: TSA Dropping 'Anomaly' Is a 'Good Move'

Hillary Clinton: TSA Dropping 'Anomaly' Is a 'Good Move'

Hillary Clinton praised the Transportation Security Administration for improving its training and protocol regarding transgender passengers.

The Democratic presidential candidate linked to an article Friday on Twitter that announced the government agency’s recent decision to cease using the term “anomaly” to describe trans bodies, as well its commitment to implement guidelines and renew “Transgender 101” trainings.

In response, Clinton called the new measures a “good move,” and wrote a post reaffirming her commitment to transgender equality.

“Transgender people deserve respect, safety, and equal treatment everywhere. Good move by @TSA,” she stated.

TSA administrators first told The Advocate Tuesday that they will stop describing perceived inconsistencies in a person’s anatomy when going through a body scanner as an “anomaly.”

Officials have yet to settle on what term will be used instead to identify a discrepancy that requires additional screening, but they contend they are working with trans advocates and the broader community to arrive at a solution.

This new focus on how TSA treats its trans travelers comes about in the wake of trans woman Shadi Petosky’s live-tweeting of her harrowing experience being disrespected, detained, and delayed while trying to pass through a TSA checkpoint at Orlando International Airport last month.

Hillary Clinton made several promises to LGBT Americans earlier this month at a gala for the Human Rights Campaign, including a vow to end injustice “once and for all.”

To this end, Clinton said she supports the Pentagon’s current review of the long-standing ban on military service by out transgender Americans. She also pledged to address “the crisis of transphobic violence” that has claimed at least 21 lives this year to date.

Black Trans Woman Fatally Shot In Head In Suspected Hate Crime

Black Trans Woman Fatally Shot In Head In Suspected Hate Crime

For the second time this month, a black transgender woman has been killed.

Authorities in Montgomery Village, Maryland, are investigating the killing of Zella Ziona as a hate crime, according to NBC Washington.

“We are not ruling out the possibility that this could be hate-based,” Montgomery County police spokesman Capt. Paul Starks told the station.

The 21-year-old victim was found in an alley Thursday night after being shot in the head. She was taken to the hospital, where she later died.

A witness to the killing told WJLA he heard four to five gunshots following an argument between Ziona and a group of teenagers.

“They argued and things happened so fast,” the witness, who didn’t want to be named, told the station. “I don’t know what they argued for.”

Ziona is one of at least 21 transgender women who have been killed in the U.S. this year, according to The Advocate. The actual number may be much higher, as family members of a victim may not report to police or media that the individual was trans. At least 17 of the 21 victims this year, including Ziona, were women of color.

On Friday, friends of Ziona brought candles to the alley where she was found.

“She was just amazing,” Barbie Johnson told NBC Washington. “When Zella’s around, there’s not a single frown in the room.”

“It’s tragic,” Rock Clarkson, who was in the area where Ziona was killed, told WJLA. “Senseless violence is something none of us wants to live around.”

Open Question: Conservatives should the American people go against each other to build our nation?

Open Question: Conservatives should the American people go against each other to build our nation?
We had a hero and villain scenario with the cold war. We should have the same within our own nation. There should be division between liberals and conservatives. We could divide people against and for Lgbt, increase racism and cut minimum wage completely. The us vs them idea is good and will build our country up.
