Obama Jabs GOP For Being Behind The Times On Marriage Equality

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama on Sunday mocked the GOP for being behind the times, chiding the party and its presidential candidates for continuing to hold out against marriage equality, even though a majority of the country now supports it.

“The good news is they probably won’t use marriage equality as a wedge issue like they did in 2004 because the country has come too far,” he said in a speech at a Democratic National Committee fundraiser in New York. “In fact, America has left the leaders of the Republican Party behind.”

Without naming them directly, Obama dug into a few of the party’s presidential hopefuls for their steadfast opposition to same-sex marriage, inciting laughter from the audience.

“One of their leading candidates argued that going to prison turns you gay,” he said, referring to neurosurgeon Ben Carson, who has recently surged in the polls. “Well, you think I’m — I shouldn’t go into this? No, I mean, I’m just stating the facts.”

“Another candidate boasts that he introduced an amendment to end nationwide marriage equality — which isn’t even an accomplishment at all. A third says Americans should just disobey the Supreme Court’s ruling entirely.  I’m sure he loves the Constitution — except for Article III. And maybe the Equal Protection Amendment.  And the 14th Amendment, generally,” Obama continued, referring to Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R), both of whom stood by Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk who refused to issue marriage licenses to LGBT couples.

After listing off a few of his administration’s signature accomplishments, Obama took another shot at “the busload of Republicans fighting each other for this job” for using him as a political punching bag.

“In their world, everything was terrific back in 2008 when we were in the midst of a spiral into the worst financial crisis and economic crisis since the Great Depression, when unemployment and uninsured rates were rising and when our economy was shedding jobs each month, and we were mired in two wars, hopelessly addicted to foreign oil, and bin Laden was still at large,” Obama said.

Those were the Golden Years, apparently. And then, I came in and messed it all up.”

“You got to give these folks credit for chutzpah,” he added. “And so since everything was doing so well back in 2007-2008, now if we can just repeal Obamacare, and gut Wall Street reform, and shut down our government over women’s access to health care, and deny that the planet is getting warmer, they’ve got a plan to get us back on track.”

Returning to the main topic of the evening, Obama celebrated his policy achievements that benefited LGBT Americans, including his decision to overturn the military’s ban on openly gay soldiers, his executive order banning workplace discrimination against LGBT individuals employed by the federal government and federal contractors, as well as this year’s Supreme Court’s ruling legalizing gay marriage nationwide. The lead plaintiff in the case, Jim Obergefell, introduced Obama at Sunday’s fundraiser.

The president also heralded the country’s evolving attitudes toward gay rights, noting it was a highly divisive political issue that not many Americans supported.

“Time after time, the cynics told us that we were foolish to keep believing, that we were naïve to hope, that change was too messy or not possible at all.  And if you admit it, there were some in this room here who were skeptical that everything that needed to happen would happen.  The cynics were wrong. Tonight, we live in an America where ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ is something that ‘don’t exist,’” he said.

“We live in an America where a growing share of older generations recognize that love is love, and younger generations don’t even know what all the fuss was about. And tonight, thanks to the unbending sense of justice passed down through generations of citizens who never gave up hope that we could bring this country closer to our founding ideals — that all of us are created equal — we now live in America where our marriages are equal as well.”

Obama acknowledged that there was more work to be done in advancing LGBT rights, telling the audience that “to secure the gains this country has made requires continued vigilance.” He also reiterated his call for a ban on conversion therapy for LGBT youth.

Noting that it will take time for some Americans to embrace LGBT rights, Obama took yet another jab at Republicans by calling out those who cited religious freedom as a motive for obstructing LGBT rights.

“We affirm that we cherish our religious freedom and are profoundly respectful of religious traditions.  But we also have to say clearly that our religious freedom doesn’t grant us the freedom to deny our fellow Americans their constitutional rights,” he said. “Even as we are respectful and accommodating genuine concerns and interests of religious institutions, we need to reject politicians who are supporting new forms of discrimination as a way to scare up votes. That’s not how we move America forward.”

Azealia Banks: ‘LGBT community are like the gay white KKK’

Azealia Banks: ‘LGBT community are like the gay white KKK’

Azealia Banks has said the LGBTI community ‘are like the gay white KKK.’

The 23-year-old rapper’s latest Twitter rant comes a week after he was caught on camera calling a flight attendant a ‘fucking faggot.’

‘LGBT community are like the gay white KKK’s. Get some pink hoods and unicorns and rally down rodeo drive,’ she wrote in a since-deleted tweet on Sunday (27 September).

‘Get some pink hoods and unicorns and rally down rodeo drive.’

Has @AZEALIABANKS deleted this? “LGBT community are like the gay white KKK’s. Get some pink hoods and unicorns and rally down rodeo drive”

— Charlie Condou (@Charliecondou) September 27, 2015

The backlash was immediate.

Dorian Gray screenwriter Toby Finlay tweeted: ‘Ugh what a ludicrous fucking cunt of a human being.’

To which, Banks fired back: ‘You guys can handle TEN HARD INCHED OF COCK, call a woman a cunt, yet can’t take the word faggot LOLOL’

The rapper then justified her use of anti-gay slurs in an spat with British actress Alison Newman:

@alisonnewman you’re confused. You’ve allowed gay men to convince you that u owe them respect while they refer to you as fish and cunt. — AZEALIABANKS (@AZEALIABANKS) September 27, 2015

@alisonnewman if gay men are allowed to take words originally designed to hurt women and make them colloquial, then why can’t I ?

— AZEALIABANKS (@AZEALIABANKS) September 27, 2015

@alisonnewman are their feelings more important than ours? Why do they deserve respect that they don’t give us? — AZEALIABANKS (@AZEALIABANKS) September 27, 2015

@alisonnewman I don’t have one. At all. The gay community is asking me for respect that they are not willing to reciprocate. Point blank — AZEALIABANKS (@AZEALIABANKS) September 27, 2015

@alisonnewman @finkowska you’ll get hit with some gay male misogyny one day and look back like, damn AB was right. — AZEALIABANKS (@AZEALIABANKS) September 27, 2015

Stonewall Tanks in Opening Weekend at the Box Office

Stonewall Tanks in Opening Weekend at the Box Office

Although the police raid of New York City’s Stonewall Inn 46 years ago sparked riots that led to a movement impacting millions, the controversial movie based on that seminal event in LGBT history failed to draw a sizable audience on its opening weekend.

Put simply: Stonewall tanked at the box office. Worse than that: it bombed. If the movie Stonewall were a bottle thrown by rioters, it would be an empty plastic bottle that bounced on the ground several feet short of making contact with its target, to the pitiful sound of “boop, bop, boing.”

Stonewall raked in a measly $112,414, as Indiewire reported. The disastrous performance of the film by disaster-movie maven Roland Emrerich made it easily the lowest earning of any new release by several thousand dollars, according to the website.

Given that Stonewall opened in limited release of just 129 theaters, Indiewire estimated that the movie that cost $17 million to make earned an embarrassing average of $871 per theater for the entire weekend, or by our estimates, 0.66 percent of the cost of making the film.

Indiewire calculated that based on the $8.12 cost of an average movie ticket [not even close to what it costs in Los Angeles, but that is the average, says the website], a box office performance as weak as Stonewall’s reveals only 107 people on average went to see the film in each of its theaters’s opening weekend showings combined.

Much of the criticism of the film has focused on its casting, based on what was shown in advance screenings and previews. As The Advocate’s Daniel Reynolds put it:

“To place the first brick thrown at the onset of the modern LGBT rights movement in the hand of a handsome young white man is not only out of touch with history; from a contemporary standpoint, it is downright offensive. After all, there would be no modern rights movement, no Stonewall, without LGBT people of color.”

And he liked the movie.

In case you’re still undecided about whether Stonewall is worth your $8.12 (or likely more), check out what The Advocate has posted about the film: a clip from Stonewall that focuses on the “three-item rule” of that era is here, advocate.com social media guru Reynolds’s review of the film is here, Mark Segal’s informed commentary on why he thinks both the movie and the actual event warrant your interest is here, and our entertainment editor Jase Peeples with an excellent, incisive look at what Emmerich and the cast hope will be the impact of their film, here.

And let us know what you think of the film on Facebook, Twitter and in the comments below.

Saudi Arabia Protests Inclusion Of Gay Rights In UN Development Agenda

Saudi Arabia Protests Inclusion Of Gay Rights In UN Development Agenda

Saudi Arabia is protesting any references to homosexuality in a sweeping new agenda for global development, saying it runs “counter to Islamic law.”

Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir told a U.N. summit of world leaders Sunday that “mentioning sex in the text, to us, means exactly male and female. Mentioning family means consisting of a married man and woman.”

He asserted his country’s right to not follow any rules that relate to any “deviations” from that belief as the world moves forward on the new development agenda.

The so-called Sustainable Development Goals include a target to ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights by 2030. Some states like Saudi Arabia and the Vatican are concerned that references to “sexual rights” include rights for gay people.

WATCH: Universal releases trailer for Panti Bliss documentary The Queen of Ireland

WATCH: Universal releases trailer for Panti Bliss documentary The Queen of Ireland

The official trailer for a documentary about one of the Republic of Ireland’s most famous drag act has been released.

Panti Bliss is the leading lady of Ireland’s drag queen scene; in October, her story will hit the big screen.

Financed completely through a crowdfunding campaign which exceeded the €50,00 (£36,860.56, $55,952.50) goal, The Queen of Ireland looks at how Panti became a national treasure and an accidental activist.

‘My job as a drag queen is to commentate from the fringes,’ she says in the trailer.

‘To stand on the fringes, looking in, shouting abuse.’

It covers her beginnings in London as well as Pantigate – in which she called members of the Irish press homophobic during a radio interview – and what happened afterwards.

The interview lead to broadcaster RTÉ being threatened with legal action, forcing them to remove that section of the interview and offer a public apology; the incident and its implication for free speech were also discussed in the European Parliament and the Panti gave her celebrated Noble Call speech.

Including Panti’s role in the Irish Marriage Equality referendum, where she was one of the figureheads of the Yes campaign, the film also looks at ‘the man behind the woman’, Rory O’Neill.

The Queen of Ireland will hit Irish cinemas on 21 October; international release dates have not yet been confirmed.

German state makes homophobic journalists part of expert panel on tackling homophobia

German state makes homophobic journalists part of expert panel on tackling homophobia

The Saxony branch of Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union have announced one of Germany’s best-known anti-equality speakers to be part of an expert group aiming to tackle homo- and transphobia.

As part of their 2014 coalition agreement, the Christian Democrats and the Social Democratic Party drew up the so-called roadmap for the acceptance of the diversity of lifestyles (Aktionsplan zur Akzeptanz der Vielfalt von Lebensweisen).

Now Birgit Kelle, a journalist and member of the CDU, has written a number of books and is a frequent guest on talk show panels discussing gender and LGBTI matters; she is known for her conservative and homophobic stance.

‘You cannot expect acceptance from me,’ she famously said in a talk show in 2014 when the host asked her about her opinion on proposed changes to include non-traditional relationships and LGBTI issues in sexual education lessons.

Journalist and author Bettina Roehl, another panel member, was nominated by the eurosceptic party Alternative fuer Deutschland (AfD).

With a stance similar to Kelle’s, she has called the sex education reforms and ‘antieducational platform of indoctrination against children and young adults’.

Both have also supported the ‘Demo fuer alle’, a movement opposing these reforms; arguing they will lead to premature sexualization of children.

The SPD’s LGBTI organization criticized the decision to add both women to the panel, saying especially Kelle’s appointment undermined the roadmap’s purpose

Oliver Strotzer, the group’s chairperson, called Kelle’s work the ‘publicist attention handling of a gender ideology which, with her occasional homophobic and controversial assumptions, alludes to conspiracy theories’ in a statement.

The panel will be part of the roadmap’s first public hearing, to be held tomorrow (28 September) in Saxony’s capital of Dresden.

Its other members are Florencio Chicote, coordinator of a Berlin-based initiative for the acceptance of sexual diversity and Stephanie Nordt of QUEERFORMAT, an educational initiative on LGBTI matters.

They are joined by Dr Klemens Ketelhut, chairperson of Leipzig-based LGBTI organization RosaLinde, and the chair of Saxony’s federal women’s board, Susanne Koehler.

Danny Pintauro’s Big Secret Reveal To Oprah? He’s Been HIV-Positive For 12 Years

Danny Pintauro’s Big Secret Reveal To Oprah? He’s Been HIV-Positive For 12 Years

DPLast week former Who’s the Boss star Danny Pintauro told Oprah Winfrey that he had a big secret to share with her and her millions of viewers and last night he revealed that he’s been HIV-positive for the past dozen years.

In teaser clips released late last week ahead of his appearance on Oprah: Where Are They Now?, Pintauro spoke briefly about crystal meth use in the gay community, including his own, and how he was forced to come out as gay in 1997 after the National Enquirer threatened him.

However, the 39-year-old’s secret which will likely have the bigger impact was saved for the broadcast when Pintauro shared that he tested positive for HIV 12 years ago.

“I was living in New York at the time and completely clueless to the idea that I was positive. I went in for a regular checkup. It was just regular blood work. You go in, and you sort of waited two weeks on pins and needles — or at least I did, because I was just terrified of the idea of getting HIV.”

Pintauro told Oprah that he’d just ended a two year relationship and had was eager to experiment sexually.

“I was doing crystal meth, which completely ruins your immune system. I’d been doing it at that point very briefly, but it was three weeks or so, off and on. I had just come out of a two-year relationship, and I discovered in that relationship that there was more I wanted to explore sexually. Crystal meth takes away your inhibitions… And if you want to explore that adventurous side, taking the drug is going to put you there. I was experimenting. And believe it or not, I thought that I was being safe in that encounter. I know exactly when it happened.”

The actor joins other celebrities, such as rapper Mykki Blanco and another former sitcom star Jm. J. Bullock, who’ve revealed they’re living with HIV. Pintauro says that Who’s the Boss? costars Judith Light and Tony Danza have been supportive and he wants to become a positive force within the LGBT communities.

“I feel like in the gay community, we’ve been spending so much energy trying to become socially acceptable and so much energy trying to make marriage happen – which I think are 100 percent important – and, in doing that, we’ve forgotten about taking care of each other a little bit,” he said. “Back when the AIDS crisis was happening … back when we weren’t really socially acceptable, we still took good care of each other because we only had each other. We didn’t have all of our other friends and coworkers or any of that to turn to.”

He adds, “Now that we’ve gotten to the place, we need to look within again. We need to take a step back, and we need to say, ‘OK, here’s where we are, and here’s what we need to do to get our community back to that place of taking care of each other.’ ”

Watch a clip of Pintauro open up to Winfrey below.

Bill Maher devoted his final New Rule on Friday’s Real Time to the GOP’s “real American” heroes, who never seem to get properly vetted before they’re thrown into the right-wing celebrity spotlight.

Take Kim Davis for example:

“Kim Davis turned out to be everything conservatives hate. She gave birth to two children out of wedlock and she’s been married four times. According to her, the answer to ‘What would Jesus do?’ is ‘Everybody’”

But the Republican mascot who takes the prize in Maher’s eyes is Josh Duggar.

Hear why in the video below:
