London Fashion Week SS16 – Unfold

London Fashion Week SS16 – Unfold

Events during London Fashion Week can come in all shapes and sizes. For Unfold – the joint presentation of a selection of Irish designers – they opted for a static presentation in the Institute of Contemporary Arts.

Each of the featured designers had a small corner of the space in which to display their wares, and two groupings of models showcased the products. Plus there was cocktails, which always helps.

The designers presenting their work at this event were:

  • Jill de Burca
  • Capulet & Montague
  • Chupi
  • Nataliebcoleman
  • Honor Fitzsimons
  • Laura Kinsella
  • Martha Lynn
  • Manley
  • Maria Dorai Raj
  • Helen Steele
  • We Are Islanders

For me, the highlights were the knitwear of Honor Fitzsimons, and the dream-like headpieces of Laura Kinsella.

There’s clearly plenty of fashion talent emerging from Ireland and it was great to see them in London as part of Fashion Week SS16.

Kim Davis’ Lawyer: Gay Marriage Is Leading America ‘Into The Very Pit Of Hell’

Kim Davis’ Lawyer: Gay Marriage Is Leading America ‘Into The Very Pit Of Hell’

mat staver, kim davis' lawyer

In his interviews on any of the major news networks, you’ll hear Kim Davis’ lawyer Mat Staver talk about how all he’s asking for is some reasonable accommodations for his client’s sincerely held anti-gay beliefs.

The Liberty Counsel founder, however, has a slightly different tune when speaking to groups of fellow crazy Christians. Right Wing Watch has just released footage of Staver speaking at the Reclaiming America for Christ conference in Oklahoma in July, where he spent a half-hour fuming about the Supreme Court’s “grave sin” gay marriage ruling.

Said Staver:

“We need to stop playing charades thinking that five individuals can re-write God’s natural, created order of marriage as a union of a man and a woman, and 320 million Americans are simply just going to follow them like the Pied Piper off the cliff into the very pit of Hell. If that’s what they think, they have something else coming because as for me and my household, I will not obey those five! I will obey God rather than man and they have shaken their fist in the face of the Creator and we must resist that.”

He went on to say there will be “judgment on those five unless they repent.”

'Once Upon A Time' Will Explore LGBT Relationship In Season 5

An LGBT relationship is coming to ABC drama “Once Upon a Time.”

Executive producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz revealed the information to Entertainment Weekly after a screening of the season premiere on Friday.

“We know that community have been big supporters of the show and we would love to be able to tell a love story that reflects that,” Kitsis said.

“It’s something we want to do this year,” Horowitz added. “It’s something we think is due and important to do on the show. This is the world we live in.”

Viewers speculate that the relationship could occur between Mulan and Aurora, but Kitsis and Horowitz did not reveal which characters the arc would feature.

Last week, Horowitz shared a script tease for the season premiere on Twitter.

Vatican Reportedly Irked by LGBT Guest List at Pope’s White House Ceremony

Vatican Reportedly Irked by LGBT Guest List at Pope’s White House Ceremony

Pope Francis Vatican reportedly irked

Several guests invited to the White House for the welcoming ceremony for Pope Francis are reportedly troubling the Vatican including openly gay Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson, Mateo Williamson, is a former co-leader of Dignity USA Transgender Caucus, and Sister Simone Campbell, the pro-choice nun who is executive director of NETWORK, a 44-year-old national social justice lobbying group. Williamson is the guest of Vivian Taylor, a trans woman who formerly served as executive director of Integrity USA, an Episcopal LBGT advocacy group.

The WSJ reports:

According to a senior Vatican official, the Holy See worries that any photos of the pope with these guests at the White House welcoming ceremony next Wednesday could be interpreted as an endorsement of their activities.

The tension exemplifies concerns among conservative Catholics, including many bishops, that the White House will use the pope’s visit to play down its differences with church leaders on such contentious issues as same-sex marriage and the contraception mandate in the health care law.

Said White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest on Friday:

“The goal here is to invite up to 15,00 people to the South Lawn of the White House, and the Ellipse, to welcome the pope to the White House. We would expect a wide variety of Americans who are enthused about the opportunity to see the pope. I think that reflects the pope’s stature and the significance of his visit, and the way he has inspired so many Americans, including a bunch of us who aren’t Catholic. So I would expect there would be a diverse crowd… to attend that ceremony. And I think the diversity of that crowd reflects the diversity of people in this country who are moved by the teaching and actions of this pope.”

The 3 Types Of People You Meet As A Trans Person On OKCupid

The 3 Types Of People You Meet As A Trans Person On OKCupid
On one of the first days in January, I sat staring both optimistically and skeptically at a Chinese zodiac website that just one year before accurately predicted the complete destruction of every aspect of my life. This year, it said, would bring a whirlwind of positive change: This site is two for two now.

My 2015 kicked off with a pretty major milestone: I began medically transitioning into a female body. I’d spent all winter debating whether this was the right step for me, but once I finally started hormone replacement therapy, I immediately felt it was the best decision I’d made my entire life. Finally, with the appropriate amount of estrogen flowing through my bloodstream, everything started making sense. Everything except my dating life.

adsf

I joined OK Cupid a few years ago to cast a wider net and catch the kinds of people I wasn’t meeting through “traditional” avenues. I started on the site as a gender non-conforming gay male and then moved into being a pansexual genderqueer person. Both of those spaces availed me access to the “cool” queer and trans people of whom I wasn’t meeting in the three-dimensional world. While not many of my dates turned into anything, at least I had the encouragement that there are cool people who are actually interested in me. Unfortunately, this all changed when I started identifying as a woman. The caliber of people who now talk to me on the site are… problematic at best. Most people who message me now fall into one of these categories: The Ghost, The Gross, and The Saviour.

2015-09-16-1442372467-514698-ScreenShot20150914at6.37.54AM.jpg

The Ghost is a person who messages you with either a blank profile or no photos of their face and sometimes neither. This lurker will slide into your inbox and hit you with the “Hey, what’s up, love?” You tell me what’s up, Casper? Some actually try holding a conversation, even asking to meet up with me, all from a blank profile. Before identifying as a woman, I was never, ever messaged by a ghost. Now, a ghost messages me at least once a day. This is upsetting and offensive because I know that it stems from transphobia.

It promotes the idea that being attracted to a trans women is embarrassing — that it’s something to be ashamed of. Straight men who are attracted to trans women are often wrongfully depicted as gay men “in denial.” This is scary for them because we all know that to be gay is the ultimate wrecking ball to the fragile sandcastle that is male masculinity. The Ghost doesn’t want to have any “incriminating” information connecting them to an account where they’re flirting with trans women. I once had a person message me and say “I can send you photos of my face if you give me your email address.” This behavior is damaging to us because it reinforces the concept that trans people are undesirable, despite the fact that trans women are some of the most in demand people in sex work. Worrying about whether anyone would be attracted to me was a constant thought when I began embracing my transness. To a degree, it still is a constant thought. This brings me to my next culprit.

2015-09-16-1442372654-7703858-ScreenShot20150909at11.20.28PM.png
2015-09-16-1442372682-3119591-ScreenShot20150909at11.26.34PM.png

The Gross is the person who gets way too sexual in the first few messages and is often uncomfortably focused on the genitals they presume you have. The above screen grabs are real first messages I received from three different people. The Gross is always trying to hookup. They let you know this from the beginning. Some are straight forward and others use suggestive language like Mr. “Who yu stay with love?” did. However we all know what they’re looking for. The gross will more likely have photos, and they sometimes fill out their profiles, but they’re still awful nonetheless. They’re conflicting for me in that they debunk the fallacy that no one is sexually attracted to me, but they also disregard my humanity.

The Gross archetype was birthed out of the depiction of trans women as not only undesirable, but also hypersexual as well. We have years of only showing trans women in media through images of prostitutes, “traps” or cross dressers, as well as transphobic porn to thank for this. This combination makes cisgender people believe that if they’re attracted to a trans woman, they can never be public about it and also that we’re not the kind of people you enter a committed relationship with. Now, I don’t mind casual hookups, but damn, ask me out for a drink first. Shit, ask me my name first.

2015-09-16-1442372767-937074-ScreenShot20150915at7.53.00AM.png
2015-09-16-1442372789-1218786-ScreenShot20150915at7.53.15AM.png
2015-09-16-1442372817-996003-ScreenShot20150915at7.53.24AM.png
2015-09-16-1442372885-64762-ScreenShot20150915at7.53.41AM.png

The Saviour is a more subtle transgressor because they are very close to being someone who is worth my time. They have comprehensive profiles and they aren’t ashamed of publicly dating trans women. That’s a good start. However, The Saviour’s problem is that they think they deserve an award because they have audacity to date a trans person publicly. The Saviour boasts a little too proudly about how “open-minded” they are but their actions prove otherwise. They see themselves as allies and believe that because they are allies and lovers of trans people, that they are incapable of cissexist behavior. I once had a person get annoyed with me because I told them the term “tranny” is offensive. Their response:

“I’ve dated lots of trans girls who didn’t care if I called them a tranny. Whatever, it’s not big deal, I said you were beautiful.”

Seriously. I wish I still had the message to do a screenshot.

The Saviours of the world need to understand a few things. 1.) I’m cute. Don’t deny it, you already told me that. 2.) Don’t act like you’re doing me some huge favor by being attracted to me. I’m quite alright by myself. I’d never sacrifice my self-respect just so someone can hold my hand in Washington Square Park. 3.) Please listen to trans people (and any group you aren’t a part of) when they tell you what language is inappropriate in reference to their lives. You don’t become an ally just by association: you have to listen to the needs of the people you claim to respect and not dismiss us when it becomes “too complicated.”

Dating in general is always a nerve-wracking experience without the added element of being trans. My OKCupid transition has been a bit of a rocky one, but I haven’t given up hope! I know there are great humans out there. Hopefully they’ll read this and make the conscious decision to not be awful. If not for me, do it for humanity.

In 2015 can we all try not being the worst?

Kim Davis in Trouble Again? Lawyer Says She Interfered with Licenses Against Judge’s Order

mason - kim davis in trouble

The attorney for Brian Mason, the Rowan County deputy clerk who chose to defy Kim Davis and issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, is concerned that the licenses he has been issuing are invalid because Kim Davis altered the official forms in order to remove her name from them. One of the conditions of Davis’s release from jail was that she not interfere with the issuance of licenses.

RELATED: This Deputy Clerk is Willing to Defy Kim Davis and Keep Issuing Marriage Licenses to Same-Sex Couples

kim davisThe Courier-Journal reports:

Deputy Clerk Brian Mason began providing the forms to couples earlier this month while Davis remained in jail, and he has continued to give them out following her release.

However, he is concerned that changes to the licenses have resulted in “substantial questions about validity,” Richard Hughes, an attorney for Mason, wrote Friday.

“I discussed with Mr. Mason in my opinion he had done nothing wrong and is continuing to follow his sworn testimony to the court, however it also appears to this counsel those changes were made in some attempt to circumvent the court’s orders and may have raised to the level of interference against the court’s orders,” Hughes wrote.

Added Hughes: “Mr. Mason’s concern is he does not want to be the party that is issuing invalid marriage licenses and he is trying to follow the court’s mandate as well as his superior ordering him to issue only these changed forms.”

Famous rapper says Caitlyn Jenner ‘marketing evil’

Famous rapper says Caitlyn Jenner ‘marketing evil’

A famous rapper made some problematic comments on a New York radio station on Friday.

Rapper Waka Flocka Flame told The Breakfast Club Caitlyn Jenner’s transitioning was an: ‘Affront to God.’

His comments specifically related the role pop culture plays for young people. He said ‘transgenders’ were ‘marketing evil, man.’

Flame’s said traditional families were in danger, who had become ‘afraid’ to be ‘husbands and wives.’

‘Women are afraid to be a wife and young males is afraid to be men.’ he said.

‘It’s like, it’s not cool, they’re not marketing that. They don’t market families and husbands and wives no more. They marketing young girls, you know what I’m saying? Transgenders — they’re marketing evil, man.’

Transgenderism he said was the devil’s attempts to play tricks on you, and you are how ‘God made you.’

‘You are who you are when God made you, not who you became after he did. That’s how I just feel. You rebuking God, man.

‘God didn’t put them feelings in you, man, that’s the Devil playing tricks on your mind,’ he added. ‘That’s a test from God. If you can’t outbeat [sic] that one task and you believe that, then you’re going to believe everything else.’

During the rest of the interview Flame – real name Juaquin James Malphurs – shed further controversial opinions, including the discussion surrounding African-American heritage in North America.

‘I know slavery happened; but guess what happening right now? If you in the hood right now, your rent is cheap…Why you complaining? Stack that paper.’

Five Things Homos Love To Hate (In Addition To Kim Davis)

Five Things Homos Love To Hate (In Addition To Kim Davis)

635773470065997560-GTY-487308536We have a confession to make: We love Kim Davis. Or rather, we love to hate Kim Davis.

Related: PHOTOS: Kim Davis Memes Just Keep Getting Better

She’s the perfect villain. She’s privileged (white, middle class, hetero) and in a position of power, and she’s been using those two things to impose her religious beliefs upon others. And all the while she’s been getting tons and tons of attention for it, in which she visibly delights.

Related: Kim Davis’ Marriage History Explained In One Handy Flowchart

How could anyone not love to hate a person like that?

Of course, it helps to know that the Notorious K.I.M. is legally wrong, and even most conservatives agree. And just think about how much fun is it to denounce her, and that feeling of moral superiority it provides. Then, of course, there are all the memes.

This got us to thinking about all the other things we homos love to hate.

Scroll down for five other things…

Madonna

MadonnaCoverArt-630x630

For whatever reason, gay men love trashing Madonna for sport. If we’re not criticizing her for an age we already are or soon will be (“How dare she be 57!”), we’re tearing apart her new single (“Featuring Nicki Minaj? Again? Really?!”) or rolling our eyes at her latest red carpet antic (“Can you believe she flashed her butt? Ew! Gross!”)… Then we drop $350 to watch her shake her sexy lady butt while knowing all the words to the songs we profess to hate. It’s the weirdest thing.

Straight women in gay bars

bachelorette-party-girls

Nothing kills a buzz faster than when a bachelorette party rolls up to a gay bar ready to boogie to the latest Britney jam. It’s every gay man’s worst nightmare: squealing women dancing on tables in a desperate ploy for male attention. But, secretly, we enjoying watching these ladies get progressively more intoxicated until they are eventually escorted out of the building. And, of course, we’re the ones who often invite them inside in the first place, just to show them what they can’t have. It helps to reaffirm our homosexuality by reminding us why we’re gay in the first place.

Shirtless men at Pride

gay pride Chicago02

We criticize these guys for giving us a bad name and perpetuating the the myth that all gay men are lascivious, sex-crazed narcissists, while at time drooling over them and secretly hoping that maybe, just maybe, we’ll bump into one (or three) of them at the bar later.

Condoms

MTI3NTgxOTEyNzk2NjEyNjE4

Let’s face it, condoms just aren’t sexy. They remind us of all the things that could go wrong when having sex: stinky messes, diseases, infections, etc. But they’re necessary because they keep us healthy. So we wear them, boys. Even though we hate them. Whomp, whomp. And don’t forget about PrEP.

Frat boys

Screen shot 2015-09-10 at 4.42.30 PM

We hate them because of what they represent: heterosexism, elitism, douchebaggery, etc. We denounce their lack of proper hygiene, their terrible sense of style, their ill manners. Yet at the same time we love them because they’re kinda hot and because, even though they’re probably pretty sloppy and selfish in the sack, we still kinda sorta want to hook up with them, even if just for the bragging rights.
