New Australian PM to Waste Time, Millions on Public Marriage Vote

New Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced today that he plans to stick to a plan from former PM Tony Abbott and have a public vote on marriage equality after the next election rather than allowing a free vote in parliament. Abbott was ousted as PM during a leadership vote on Monday night.

Same Same’s Matt Akersten reports:

Whether or not there’ll be a change to the Marriage Act will “be determined by a vote of the people, all the people, via a plebiscite,” said Turnbull in Parliament today, prompted by a question from opposition deputy leader Tanya Plibersek.

“It would take half an hour of parliamentary time to allow this bill to be voted on,” she pointed out. “It could be done tomorrow. Will the PM allow a vote on this bill and allow members of his party a free vote as he’s publicly called for previously?”

Turnbull replied: “If we are re-elected to government, every single Australian will have a say.”

The Australian Electoral Commission estimates the cost of a public vote to be $158.4 million.

In contrast, the Labor Party has promised they’ll introduce a bill for marriage equality within 100 days of winning the next election, and will encourage all MPs to have a free conscience vote on the legislation.

Polls show that approximately 70 percent of Australians favor marriage equality.

That Time Steve Grand Had To Clarify To A News Anchor That He's Gay

Someone skipped over a possibly relevant bullet point… lol Today I went on live TV in San Diego to promote the show I’m doing tonight at Urban Mo’s and to also talk about getting asked to the Marine Corps ball. The two anchor ladies on both sides of me were very sweet and cheery. They were great. About a minute into the interview I was talking about where I draw inspiration, and one of the very well intentioned anchors interjected: “poor women who date you, right?”After a few seconds of pause: “well.. No. I’m gay so…”I used the opportunity to talk about how no matter who we love, as humans, we all love the same… That our experiences are far more alike than different… Love is a human experience, not specified to one sexual orientation or another… etc. Immediately after that, the news woman to my right asked about being asked to the Marine Corps ball… by a man. As soon as we cut the segment I burst out laughing and let the woman know it was all okay. I understand they are meeting new people every couple of minutes and are expected to entertain and engage audiences all over the state so I don’t post this at all as a criticism. If I was legit famous it would be one thing, but I still feel grateful for all the opportunities I am afforded to talk about my life and my work. This was just a silly moment I found to be pretty hilarious. Lol. #stayclassySanDiego

Leave it to Steve Grand to take a potentially awkward moment and, well, make it pretty great.

The out singer-songwriter, 25, appeared on a local news station (which appears to be San Diego 6, based on the onscreen logo) over the weekend to promote his Sept. 13 performance at Urban MO’s, a “hetero-friendly gay restaurant,” and the chat almost took a turn for the worse when the anchor inquired about his love life.  

Commenting on how several of Grand’s songs like “All-American Boy” and “Time” describe heartbreak, the anchor said, “Poor women who date you, right?”

Grand seemed puzzled for a moment, but rebounded.  

“Uh, no, I’m gay — so yeah, they’re, uh, it’s guys,” he said. “But it’s all the same really. It’s about the human experience.”

He seemed to determined to put the reporter at ease, adding, “I think that it’s good that people hear me and they may not even realize that I’m singing about guys, and I think that is a testament to the fact that we do really all love the same, we lose the same, we feel heartache the same and that’s what it’s all about.”

He later explained on Facebook that he didn’t want fans to interpret his response as being critical of the journalist, and said that all was fine in the end,” he wrote. “As soon as we cut the segment I burst out laughing and let the woman know it was all okay.” 

Well played, Steve!

Grand appeared on a local San Diego news show to promote a live appearance and talk about being asked to the Marine Corps Ball, but about a minute into the segment as he discussed where he draws inspiration, the woman to his left commented “poor women you date, right?”

After a pregnant pause, he replies, “Well, no. I’m gay.”

Then he ran with it:

It’s all the same really,” he told the the presenter.
“It’s about the human experience and I think that’s what I really mostly stand for as an artist.

And I think that it’s good that people hear me and they may not even realize that I’m singing about guys, and I think that is a testament to the fact that we do really all love the same, we lost the same, we feel heartache the same and that’s what it’s all about.”

That or it proves he doesn’t use many male pronouns in his songs and that the interviewer didn’t do much Googling before the broadcast.

Steve posted the video to Facebook along with a good-spirited response:

Fired Trans Employee Asked 'What Are You?' Settles Discrimination Case

Alabama resident Jessi Dye’s first day working at Summerford Nursing Home was an unbelievable experience. While things started out normally, she says the day took a dramatic turn when called into the manager’s office, insulted, and abruptly fired because Dye is transgender.

After completing the new hire paperwork and training, plus getting vaccinated, Dye was called into Robert Summerford’s office to talk about the discrepancy between the gender she presents as and the gender marker on her driver’s license. “What are you?” Summerford reportedly asked as Dye entered his office.

“It was exactly like being punched in the stomach,” Dye told the Huffington Post in a phone interview after the settlement was announced.

After Dye explained she is transgender and in the middle of transition, Summerford allegedly asked her “What am I supposed to do with you?” before instructing her to gather her belongings and leave the building.

Dye filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission with assistance from the Southern Poverty Law Center. After months of legal wrangling, the company decided to settle the case for an undisclosed amount of money. The nursing home will also implement nondiscrimination policies that cover sexual orientation and gender identity, plus train its staff on how to deal with LGBT issues.

“I think the takeaway here is that we have a small company that is represented by competent lawyers and they saw the writing on the wall,” SPLC lawyer Sam Wolfe told the Huffington Post. “It’s an admission that employers do need to pay attention to their obligations under federal law to not discriminate because of someone’s gender identity or sexual orientation.”

Approximately 15 percent of transgender people earn less than $10,000 a year — a poverty rate four times higher the national average. Transgender Americans are twice as likely to be unemployed but have a higher level of education than the general population, according to a report by the National Center for Transgender Equality and the National LGBTQ Task Force. Ninety percent of transgender workers reported harassment or discrimination on the job.

Alabama does not have a law preventing discrimination against LGBT people. In 2012, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission ruled that discrimination against transgender people is a form of sex discrimination under the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Over the past two years, activists, advocacy groups and community members have secured significant gains in the fight for increased access to healthcare for transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC) communities in New York and nationally.

The New York Legal Assistance Group’s LGBTQ Law Project works daily –both through direct client representation and broader public policy advocacy–to ensure that low-income LGBTQ New Yorkers are able to access health insurance and a range of medical services at hospitals and in doctor’s offices free of discrimination. Unfortunately, our transgender and gender non-conforming TGNC clients in particular experience significant barriers to accessing those services during some of their most vulnerable moments. They are turned away from emergency rooms, experience harassment by medical providers, are denied access to health insurance because of mismatched identity documents, or go without basic medical care altogether because of an inability to pay.

TGNC communities across the country are subjected to similarly degrading treatment, and at staggering rates. According to the largest national survey of TGNC communities in the United States, TGNC people experience devastating levels of discrimination, harassment, and mistreatment in nearly every aspect of their lives, resulting in disproportionately high levels of poverty, housing insecurity, and unemployment. This is particularly true for communities of color, who are four times more likely to live in extreme poverty and earn less than $10,000 annually. Over half of those surveyed reported being harassed in places of public accommodation, including at hospitals and health centers. Nearly one-fifth report being refused medical care due to their transgender or gender nonconforming identity and almost one-third postponed medical care all together out of fear of discrimination or mistreatment. These social and legal stressors contribute to a documented trend of TGNC communities suffering worse health outcomes overall.

Growing Momentum Towards Change

Legislatures and agencies in New York and across the country have begun to address these disparities by enacting policies that increase TGNC access to healthcare and remove discriminatory barriers to care that have existed for many years. For example, in May 2014, Medicare officially lifted a decades-old ban on transition-related surgery. In December 2014, Governor Cuomo issued guidance clarifying that private insurance companies in New York can no longer deny medically necessary treatment on the basis of a recipient’s gender identity or expression. And even the federal government recently issued historic guidance that prohibits healthcare and insurance discrimination on the basis of gender identity and expression under the Affordable Care Act.

One of the most recent of these groundbreaking victories occurred in March 2015, when the New York State Department of Health removed its decades-old categorical exclusion on transition-related care. NYLAG advocated strongly for the removal of Medicaid’s ban and submitted official comments to the Department of Health, urging a broad and inclusive rule. Because our clients are low-income, and most use Medicaid as their primary insurance, this change will have a significant impact on the people we work with every day. However, while removing the ban was a significant and important step, the policy does not go far enough.

Medicaid replaced its exclusion with several exceptions and prohibitions that create unnecessarily burdensome requirements for low-income New Yorkers seeking fully-inclusive healthcare. For example, Medicaid will not allow youth under the age of 18 to access hormone therapy despite a consensus among medical experts that young people and their healthcare providers are fully capable of understanding and addressing these medical needs. The new policy also prohibits many procedures and surgeries that the Department of Health has deemed “cosmetic” but which leading medical experts in the field have deemed to be a vital part of transition for many.

Fortunately, groups like the Sylvia Rivera Law Project continue to fight against the Department of Health in court to remove these restrictions, and NYLAG continues to represent community members most impacted by these changes. We will continue to do this work until the prohibitions are removed and our clients are able to access the medically necessary care that they need to survive and thrive.

Liza Minnelli cancels UK shows

Iconic entertainer Liza Minnelli has called off two imminent UK shows.

The Cabaret star, 69, was also due to perform at the London Palladium on 20 September and Sheffield on 22 September.

According to BBC News, the shows were cancelled over a financial dispute with promoter Rocco Buonvino. Other reports have suggested that around half of the tickets remained unsold.

Minnelli, who is the daughter of Wizard of Oz star Judy Garland, was due to be interviewed on stage by fellow veteran star Sir Bruce Forsyth.

A representative for Minnelli said the shows ‘have unfortunately been cancelled because of the promoter’s failure to pay. Due to current economics and unusually high ticket prices, the producer was unable to secure the promised funds.’

The added: ‘For months Liza has been preparing for these shows and she was devastated to hear of this unfortunate news. She has always thought of London a second home and will miss seeing her friends and devoted fans.’

Mocking Antigay Churches Goes Mainstream In Hilarious New Tide Commercial

Screen Shot 2015-09-15 at 8.41.23 AMA new commercial for Tide To Go has taken a page from current events (we’re going to try not to say her name for once — rhymes with Tim Mavis) and given a hilarious spin to fringe religious bigotry.

Two men approach a church holding hands when a clergywoman stops them in their tracks.

“I won’t let you blemish the sanctity of marriage!” the woman, played by Lynne Marie Stewart (aka Miss Yvonne on Pee Wee’s Playhouse and Danny’s mom on Go-Go Boy Interrupted), says.

The moment of tension is broken when she busts out the Tide To Go pen and we realize she meant “blemish” in a much less metaphorical sense.

It’s a comforting thing when antigay religious nutjobs are considered a broad enough punchline for a major brand to poke fun at.

'Tide To Go' Mocks Homophobes Like Kim Davis In New Ad

Kim Davis might not be buying Tide To Go any time soon. 

The stain-removing pen is featured in a new ad that takes a swipe at homophobes who want to stand in the way of marriage equality. The 30-second commercial shows a same-sex couple heading into a church with hands held before being stopped by a woman outside. 

“I won’t let you blemish the sanctity of marriage,” she says, but right as they men begin to protest, it’s clear her real issue is not with their impending union. There’s currently no word on when or if the ad will begin airing on television.

“First a clerk in Kentucky, and now a church lady in Los Angeles! This same sex couple faces yet another obstacle on the way to marriage equality in this commercial I directed,” Mark Mickelsburg wrote in a Facebook post

Procter & Gamble was not immediately available for further comment.
