"The Lucky Country"… Really?

"The Lucky Country"… Really?
So, I’ve been living in Los Angeles now for roughly two years, and the most common thing that I hear from most Americans is just how backward Australia seems as a nation.

Yeah, that’s correct. The nation that houses the Westboro Baptist nutters looks to Australia as a backward nation. And the thing is, I 150 percent can see exactly why they would think that.

Firstly, marriage equality is nowhere to be seen. 2015 has been a landmark year globally for LGBT rights. Ireland voted yes to marriage equality, the SCOTUS made marriage equality the law of the land here in the U.S., and what exactly did Australia achieve?

Bronwyn (Marshmallow head) Bishop used a hell of a lot of taxpayers money flying herself around the country on helicopters, rocket ships and god knows what else. Tony Abbott still appears lost, vague and zombie-like during any press conference or interview and the minister for Agriculture has said that if Australia were to allow marriage equality it would affect trading with other countries, not to mention saying he was going to kill Johnny Depp’s dogs. Just to name a few.

Is this a joke? No. Well, yes, actually. The Australian government is a complete joke, and I can honestly say that I have never seen the country is such a sad and pathetic state.

Australia used to hold the title of “The Lucky Country”… Yeah, lucky if you’re a heterosexual, caucasian MALE. The rest of us are screwed.

I’ve tiptoed around the subject for far too long, but the fact is Australia looks like a nation run by a bunch of 16th century hillbillies.

I am in no way saying that other western nations have achieved absolute success, however Australia isn’t even in the same league when it comes to progress and are lagging behind by a few hundred years.

The thing I find so unbearably pitiful is Australia’s national anthem line: “advance Australia fair,” which is meant to mean “progress this beautiful country of ours forward.”

What progression is Australia actually making? The MINISTER FOR WOMEN IS A MAN! You can’t make this shit up!

Now as a nation like Australia who has such an intense history of discrimination, I really would’ve expected them to take greater note when it comes to the rights of others. Instead, other groups have just fallen victim to hate.

It’s time Australia came out from the dark ages, allowed marriage equality and equal rights for the LGBTQ community, women, indigenous Australians and people other than the straight white male population and caught up with the rest of the Western World.

I know I have ranted before about this issue but it’s becoming more and more painful to see my home go backwards rather than forwards. When I left Australia and moved to the US, I truly hoped that one day when I returned things may have changed. This is appearing to be further and further away from reality.

The thing I wish the Australian politicians would grasp is that marriage equality isn’t about a fancy wedding, a great cake and a fountain of champagne (well, it could be, but there’s more to it than that). Marriage equality is a statement to the millions of LGBTQ youth of Australia that they are enough. That they are accepted and equal to their heterosexual peers and that everyone deserves a fair go.

It really is time to get with the times Australia. We have electricity and a thing called “the wheel” here in the future.

Major League Baseball prospect reveals he’s gay

Major League Baseball prospect reveals he’s gay

Major League Baseball has its first gay prospect. According to a post on the league’s website, David Denson, a first baseman/outfielder for the Brewers’ rookie-level affiliate in Helena, Montana, came out in a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article. The Brewers play in the Wisconsin city.

‘Talking with my teammates, they gave me the confidence I needed, coming out to them,’ Denson said to the newspaper. ‘They said, “You’re still our teammate. You’re still our brother. We kind of had an idea, but your sexuality has nothing to do with your ability. You’re still a ballplayer at the end of the day. We don’t treat you any different. We’ve got your back.”

‘That was a giant relief for me,’ the Brewers’ 27th-ranked prospect continued. ‘I never wanted to feel like I was forcing it on them. It just happened. The outcome was amazing. It was nice to know my teammates see me for who I am, not my sexuality.’

According to MLB, Denson, who hails from California, is the first active player affiliated with an MLB organization to come out publicly. From all accounts he has the support of the Brewers.

‘David is a highly respected member of the Milwaukee Brewers family, and he is a very courageous young man,’  Brewers GM Doug Melvin said in a 16 August statement. ‘Our goal for David is to help develop him into a Major League player, just as it is for any player in our system, and we will continue to support him in every way as he chases that dream.’

Billy Bean, MLB’s ambassador of inclusion and a player who came out after an eight year career, tweeted the following:

Caitlyn Jenner meets Chaz Bono in new I Am Cait clip

Caitlyn Jenner meets Chaz Bono in new I Am Cait clip

In the latest episode of Caitlyn Jenner’s series I Am Cait she meets one of her icons.

Jenner visits the Los Angeles’ Children’s Hospital LGBT center in a new clip and talks to Chaz Bono: transgender trailblazer.

‘For the longest time, I’ve wanted to talk to Chaz,’ Jenner says.

‘I met him at Dancing With the Stars briefly, and obviously I couldn’t tell him my story.’

In the clip Jenner tells Bono she was watching his transition and admired how well he’d done.

‘In your transition, which obviously I was watching and everybody else was watching, I know it’s been a lot of hard work, but you’ve done a very good job and I was really glad to see that.’

Bono came out publically as a transgender man in 2009.

‘He came out publically before I did. So finally having the opportunity to spend some time with him – I think it’s going to be great,’ Jenner said sometime after the meeting.

Survey Finds Half of Young Brits Say They’re Not Completely Straight

Survey Finds Half of Young Brits Say They’re Not Completely Straight

oberyn

A new YouGov survey has found 49% of 18-24 year-olds in Britain don’t identify as 100% heterosexual.  Respondents were asked to put themselves on a Kinsey scale where 0 is exclusively heterosexual and 6 was completely homosexual.

International Business Times reports:

One of the most striking findings of the new study is that with each generation, people see their sexuality as less fixed and more fluid. The results for 18-24 year-olds are particularly telling, with 43% placing themselves in the non-binary area between 1 and 5 and 52% place themselves at one end or the other. Of these, only 46% say they are completely heterosexual and 6% as completely homosexual.

More from the survey:

People of all generations now accept the idea that sexual orientation exists along a continuum rather than a binary choice – overall 60% of heterosexuals support this idea, and 73% of homosexuals. 28% of heterosexuals believe that ‘there is no middle ground – you are either heterosexual or you are not’.
