Twelve School Resources for your Transgender Binder of Awesomeness

The Twinadoes started fifth grade yesterday! It was with a 60/40 blend of trepidation and joy that I dropped them off at the door of another new school. While homeschooling was easier than I expected, I was pretty excited to have the house to myself for the first time in 6 months. The kids were both really pumped to spend the day making friends, having recess, checking out a new school, and oh yeah, maybe learning some stuff.

As it has been in every school, the Little Miss was the first transgender student they’d interacted with. My husband and I met with the principal almost two weeks prior to the start of school to share our story and meet with someone who would become an important part of our lives. We shared our journey and some of the concerns we had for the upcoming year. Our principal is a wonderful person and I’m really relieved to be with yet another understanding educator who is eager to learn and create a safe space for all children.

Unfortunately, for the first time in her school history our daughter will have to use the unisex bathroom. The school system has a policy in place that dictates that all transgender kids will use a unisex bathroom instead of the bathroom of their affirmed gender. My heart sank when I was given this information, though it was paired with the statement that we would work together to get the right people the information they needed to make positive changes for this population of children.

At home that night, I watched as our daughter’s little shoulders, so high with expectation, slumped in shock when she heard that she wouldn’t be able to use the girl’s bathroom. For her, being forced to use the unisex bathroom indicated that the school didn’t believe her. It told her that the school thought she wasn’t really a girl as she would be denied the very basic right to use the bathroom with all the rest of the girls. By telling her to use a unisex bathroom, it set her up for questions from her peers, it put focus on an area of her body that already caused her distress, highlighted her difference from her peers, and set up the school as her largest source of stress instead of a safe haven for learning.

For a child who has always identified as female, this was both confusing and embarrassing. We explained how her hero, Jazz Jennings, went through similar struggles and helped pave the way for our daughter to use the girl’s bathroom at her previous school in Florida. Though it will be hard, she now has the opportunity to help create change in her current school system.

I want to be positive and see the tremendous potential that our daughter has to help create change here in our town. It was with mixed feelings that I gave her the positive spin of, “Go, be a trailblazer, young one.”

But, my heart hurts that the responsibility falls on her shoulders. It would have been wonderful to show up to a school system that was ready for a child like ours. I will say this, the hearts of the teachers in our school seem to be ready for our daughter and I’ve been told that the teachers are eager to learn. It would be the expectation I guess, for the next line in the story to say, “And the rest is just paperwork.”

But, it isn’t that simple. I foolishly thought that we’d be able to share our story, everyone would see how silly it is to keep our daughter (and kids like her) out of the bathroom of their affirmed gender, that I might have to point out the Department of Justice’s opinion on the matter, and that would be the end of it. But, no. There will be meetings, and education, and calling in reinforcements to help with the education, and making ourselves available to answer questions, and these things take time.

If you don’t already know this about me, I’m impatient on a good day. It’s not uncommon for my family to see me fuming at my computer as I wait for the little round spinning rainbow image to do what I’ve asked the computer to do. I’m even more impatient when it involves a process change (ask my family about the stress of my doctoral capstone project). When the issue causes my daughter to feel shame and makes her feel different, then the slow process of change is likely going to drive me insane.

I know that other families are going through this process too. So, I’m going to share the links to everything I had printed up in the Purple Transgender Binder of Awesomeness which I gave to the administration of our school district. I’ve also updated the resources page at Non-Conforming Mom to include these. And, because I write when I’m agitated, frustrated, happy, and bored, I’m sure I’ll be giving updates along the way.

WNBA’s Griner won’t pay after marriage is annulled

WNBA’s Griner won’t pay after marriage is annulled

WNBA star Brittney Griner has no spousal support once her marriage ends. A Maricopa County Superior Court judge blocked Glory Johnson’s request for $20,000 (€18,000) a month.

Johnson, who plays for the Tulsa Shock, is having twins. She asked the judge for financial support from her former spouse because she cannot play this season. She also requested attorney fees and for Griner to make car payments.

‘We are very pleased that the judge has ruled, after evaluating the credibility of the testimony, that a 28 day marriage does not entitle Glory Johnson to Brittney Griner’s money for purposes of alimony, Mercedes car payments or attorney’s fees,’ Griner’s attorney, David Michael Cantor, said in a statement according to the Associated Press.

The courtship, and brief marriage, of the two WNBA stars has been rocky and turbulent. They were married in early May, three weeks after both were arrested on domestic violence charges.

Approximately 28 days after the wedding, Griner filed for the annulment. The day before, Johnson announced she was pregnant.

Griner, center for the Phoenix Mercury, was suspended for seven games at the start of the league’s season. She also must undergo 26 weeks of domestic violence counseling as part of her plea deal.

Johnson was also suspended for seven games; that punishment will be served next year.

Documentary photographer Mads Nissen was in Finland for the World Press Photo Exhibition when something caught his eye.

Tweeted Nissen: “Only been to Helsinki about an hour (to open the WPP exhibition) when this happened-”

The pro-family skinhead thug in the background stands next to the familiar logo of anti-gay religious organizations around the world, one that was recently adapted for a ‘straight pride’ flag in Russia and is the symbol for the ‘Manif Pour Tous’ movement in France.

US embassy in Moscow sponsors I Am Michael biopic of ‘cured’ gay man

US embassy in Moscow sponsors I Am Michael biopic of ‘cured’ gay man

A film festival sponsored by the US Embassy in Moscow will controversially (and possibly illegally) show an LGBTI-themed film in September.

I Am Michael is the film in question: a biopic about Michael Glatze (James Franco), a gay activist who later in life renounced his homosexuality while becoming a Christian.

The festival screens September 16-27 in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

The website for the film festival notes: ‘A gay activist and magazine founder is ‘saved’ from his homosexuality after turning to God.’

While Russia does not ban films around LGBTI topics exactly, it does ban screening films which show homosexuality in a positive light to under 18s.

If the film is shown to minors it therefore will break that law.

Ted Cruz Called God’s Candidate At Anti-Gay Rally In Iowa: VIDEO

Ted Cruz Called God’s Candidate At Anti-Gay Rally In Iowa: VIDEO

Screen Shot 2015-08-22 at 7.53.56 AM

Speaking at an anti-gay rally Friday night, Ted Cruz’s Iowa campaign chairman suggested the senator was chosen by God to run for president.

Hours after his showdown over LGBT rights with lesbian actress Ellen Page at the Iowa State Fair, Cruz was joined for the rally by “heroes” who’ve been “persecuted” for their anti-gay religious beliefs, including Iowa Mennonite couple Dick and Betty Odgaard (above), Oregon bakers Aaron and Melissa Klein, and former Air Force Sgt. Phillip Monk. About 2,500 people attended Cruz’s “Rally for Religious Liberty.”

The Dallas Morning News reports:

Screen Shot 2015-08-22 at 7.59.51 AM“These threats are not imagined,” Cruz said. “There is a war on faith in America today. In our lifetimes, did we ever imagine that in the land of the free and home of the brave we would be witnessing our government persecute its citizens for their faith?”

The religiosity was unabashed at Cruz’s “Rally for Religious Liberty,” an event intended to help him harness frustration among religious conservatives, a key bloc in the Iowa caucus. Cruz’s state campaign chairman, Matt Schultz (right), went so far as to portray the Texas senator as God’s top choice for president.

“We need someone who will go to Washington and throw the money-changers out,” he said, comparing Cruz to Jesus himself. “God raises special men and women to protect his people, and I believe this is one of those moments in time. … Ted Cruz is that man who God has prepared for this moment in time.”

If that’s the case, God isn’t doing a very good job of convincing Republican voters. Cruz is currently polling sixth in Iowa and even worse nationally. In fact, Cruz is no longer even ahead in his home state of Texas, where Donald Trump overtook him in a poll this week.

One of Cruz’s major problems is that his anti-Washington rhetoric is being upstaged by Trump, the quintessential political outsider. So, anti-gay bigotry disguised as “religious liberty” may be all Cruz has left. From The Washington Post:

Cruz has said that 2016 will be a “religious liberty election,” and is working to woo the religious right, which has a strong constituency here, in the early voting state of South Carolina and in the rest of the South, which is set to play a major role in the Republican nominating contest.

Here in Iowa, 57 percent of Republican caucus-goers identified as evangelical Christians, according to entrance polls. Cruz has been courting faith leaders here, dispatching his father Rafael, a pastor, to speak at events around the state and announcing Friday that he wants to recruit a pastor in each of Iowa’s 99 counties to do faith outreach. …

While Cruz will be competing for the evangelical vote with candidates including former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, former senator Rick Santorum and neurosurgeon Ben Carson, few have been as vociferous about the notion that religious liberty is under attack than Cruz. He brought up the issue repeatedly during a bus tour of the South last week, repeatedly promising that on his first day in office he would direct federal agencies not to meddle with people who believe they have stayed firm to their religious beliefs in the face of social change.

Earlier, the Human Rights Campaign responded to Cruz’s clash with Page over LGBT rights:

“Ted Cruz showed today that he is living in another era where he thinks it’s acceptable to treat LGBT people differently and allow businesses to refuse service to someone just because of who they are, or who they love,” said JoDee Winterhof, Senior Vice President of Policy of Political Affairs. “Today Ted Cruz was served an important reminder that in a country like ours that values the free market economy, businesses should serve all law-abiding customers who can afford to pay equally, including lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.”

Watch Schultz’s comments and other clips from Cruz’s rally on Friday night below.

Why Millennials Have Such A Different Attitude Toward Sexual Identity

Why Millennials Have Such A Different Attitude Toward Sexual Identity

Bisexual, pansexualdemiromantic, aromantic — the sexual identities with which people label themselves continue to become more diverse and more mainstream. But think back to the days long, long ago, when conversations about sexuality were typically limited to gay or straight and maybe, once in a while, bisexual. (Yawn, am I right?)

So what is it about millennials, who are both open to sexual fluidity and willing to reject labels altogether? To break it down, HuffPost Live spoke with Noah Michaelson, editorial director of Voices at The Huffington Post; Ellyn Ruthstrom, board member for the Bisexual Resource Center; freelance columnist Eliel Cruz and YouGov U.S. assistant editor Peter Moore. Check it out in the video above.

12 Grindr Fails To Avoid If You Actually Want To Get Lucky This Weekend

Disney princes were recently outed on Grindr, much to the excitement of our 12-year-old-selves. We were absolutely thrilled to learn that Prince Eric is a “dom top into water sports” and that Prince Charming has a foot fetish. This got us thinking about how to approach guys on Grindr, and what the best and worst strategies are for successfully landing a “date.”

First impressions are important. Especially when it comes to hooking up, er, dating. There’s a right way and a wrong way to strike up a conversation on Grindr. “Hey,” “Howdy,” or “How’s it going?” are usually good icebreakers, except to the guys who declare in their profiles “Please have something more to say that ‘Hey,’” for whom you will have to be somewhat more creative. Or just move along because, really, who cares?

Scroll down for how not to hit on a guy on Grindr…

Bill Maher Is Having a Field Day with the Josh Duggar Cheating Scandal: VIDEO

bill maher

Career homophobe Josh Duggar’s latest fall from “grace” proved to be the perfect fodder for Bill Maher on Friday’s Real Time monologue, with the late night host saying “forget building a wall around Mexico, let’s build one around Josh Duggar!”

Regarding Duggar’s apology, Maher had this to say:

“It must be so great to be an evangelical Christian. You know cause Jesus always forgives no matter what you do. I ask Jesus forgiveness, ah there it is again.”

Maher also poked fun at Alabama being the most adulterous state in the Ashley Madison hack:

“You know can’t say they didn’t warn us. They said when gay people get the right to marry, the Christians are going to go ‘ah, f–k it’”

REVIEW: Mr Buckley’s – Hackney, London

REVIEW: Mr Buckley’s – Hackney, London

It really wasn’t very long ago that Hackney was a bit of a wasteland. Hackney Road was just somewhere you would quickly pass by, maybe on your way to the flower market. There was nothing appealing about Hackney.

It’s that recent history that makes the appearance of a restaurant like Mr Buckley’s so remarkable.

Modern, stylish – it feels a bit like Brooklyn, or Stockholm. It definitely doesn’t feel like Hackney, at least it doesn’t feel like the Hackney Road that I used to know.

Mr Buckley’s been open a few months and seems to be going strong. I was there on a Saturday morning and their brunch menu is impressive – simple but with some interesting options that go beyond the basics.

I opted for a potato rosti served with avocado, poached eggs, and hollandaise sauce. Exactly the kind of food that you want from an upmarket brunch joint – and it was delicious.

Hackney is definitely changing, and if Mr Buckley’s is what the future looks like then I am voting for change.
