Chris Christie veers from Republican pack on businesses discriminating against gays

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie made clear Tuesday (25 August) that he does not believe businesses have the right to discriminate against LGBTI people.

From refusing to bake wedding cakes to taking photos of renting out a venue, the ‘religious freedom’ argument that has been increasingly cited since same-sex marriage has become legal in the US.

Christie, who is against same-sex marriage, believes this is a defense that can only be used by religious organizations.

‘We have a system of laws in this country, and those laws need to be followed. And the fact is, religious organizations should be protected from having to do anything that violates their religious beliefs as a religious organization. That should be protected,’ Christie said at a campaign event in Iowa.

‘But other businesses who want to do business, they should have to be able to do business under the laws of our country,’ he added. ‘When I take an oath of office as Governor, my oath of office is to enforce the laws of the state of New Jersey. Not the laws I like or the laws that I agree with, but all the laws.’

Christie’s view differs from that of other candidates for the Republican Party presidential nomination including US Senator Ted Cruz who has been steadfastly outspoken in his defense of such businesses.

Christie doesn’t find it all that complicated.

‘ …If we don’t want to have a country of men and women but a country of laws, where everyone is treated equally, that’s what we need to do. Religious organizations absolutely should be protected, everyone should freely practice their religion the way they see fit, but businesses should not be allowed to discriminate, no.’

Christie can be seen answering the question at the 10:14 mark in the video below.

Hollywood "Takes Care of Its Own," Unless You Are Trans, Part 2

Hollywood "Takes Care of Its Own," Unless You Are Trans, Part 2
Recently I blogged about some of the challenges that trans people who live out here in Hollywood, a.k.a. America’s Liberal Dream Factory, face when it comes to health care.

Let me underline exactly what those challenges mean. First, let’s look at the big, broad, macro level of Hollywood optics. I’ll use two celebrity examples; let’s make it clear that since I know nothing of their own health care needs or realities, the “examples” are purely hypothetical.

Eddie Redmayne is a talented actor who will appear in the film The Danish Girl as Lili Elbe, one of the modern world’s first transsexual women. Mr. Redmayne is, as far as I know, a cisgender (meaning non-trans) man. If the film was made under Hollywood-based Screen Actors Guild agreements, Mr. Redmayne would most likely qualify for the Motion Picture Health Plan. So we have a cisgender man playing a transsexual woman in a big-budget blockbuster movie who qualifies for his male-oriented health care because… well… he’s human, and a man.

Laverne Cox is an award-winning actress who has appeared on Orange is the New Black, and is an outspoken, eloquent advocate for rights of trans people. Let’s say that she made a film, or worked on a T.V. series under the Hollywood SAG agreement and had enough hours to qualify for health care. She might qualify, but the plan would still be able to refuse her trans-specific health care, in spite of her humanity and legal status as a woman.

Not being an idiot, I don’t think that’s likely to happen, and really, Ms. Cox’s health care is none of my damn business. But let’s make a theoretical comparison to Mr. Redmayne; Laverne would be a trans woman playing a part (trans or not) in a movie or series with contracts that include coverage under the same plan, but whether she gets trans-specific health care is completely up to the administrators of the plan. If the administrators decide that her care was part of that two-word exception “gender change,” they would be within their rights to refuse her.

Mr. Redmayne, playing a trans woman: no problem. Ms. Cox, a real trans woman: we’ll get back to you.

I could pick other examples. Felicity Huffman vs. Candis Cayne. Hilary Swank vs. Turner Scott Schofield. None of these may apply in real life, but they point to a truth; trans people can be refused trans-specific health care under the current Motion Picture Plan PPO unless they opt for an HMO, and even then they are subjected to bureaucratic gymnastics and extra scrutiny.

In all of these cases, actors are selling tickets or advertising for Hollywood by portraying trans identities. Let me put this bluntly: if we are we “interesting” enough for you, Hollywood, to tell our stories and make money doing it, why are we considered unfit to demand the health care we need to sustain those identities you are exploiting?

I’ll say that again. Hollywood is exploiting us while considering us unfit for trans-specific health coverage.

Here’s another example. Let’s say I am a young, recently transitioned female camera assistant. The plan can, and has, refused the hormones I have been prescribed because they are for “gender change;” those two magic words that are “exceptions” according to the MPIPHP.

If I am a middle-aged man who feels a little listless, my doctor can prescribe a testosterone cream for me. If I am a middle aged woman, my doctor can prescribe an estrogen patch or cream for me; the same patches, or cream our camera assistant is refused. A trans man working as a grip would be in a similar fix.

The issue seems to be this; all health plans are watching the culture for cues. It’s easy to find people in our culture who think that trans people don’t exist because we are mentally ill, had smothering mothers or are possessed by demons doing the bidding of Satan. Politicians and bloviating radio rage-peddlers find us an easy target for raising a campaign slush fund or selling worthless gold contracts to rubes; we stir strong emotions, and that sells. We’re yet another group of humans that people who are angry and scared can focus on to anesthetize themselves against reality. It’s hard to hate someone that you humanize, so some people work hard at dehumanizing us.

More subtly, there are physicians and hospital administrators who cynically may see us as a group without any political clout or unified voice, and who may be tempted to stall, complicate or discourage us from demanding the health care we so rightfully deserve. Even my friends who have trans-inclusive health coverage are frustrated by the lack of education among physicians and wildly uneven interactions with organizations like Kaiser Health.

There are also horrific cases of physicians who have allowed their personal feelings to interfere with urgent health needs of their patients. That’s inexcusable.

Most trans people working on films in Hollywood aren’t movie stars. Most of us are working crew people struggling to get by in the modern workplace like everyone else. Those of us lucky enough to have labor unions to protect our health care have just one simple request; give us what we need from the health plan we pay into, when we need it, and listen to us when we tell you that you can do it better for us than you have in the past.

It’s time for Hollywood to truly take care of all of “Our Own.”

Jesse Tyler Ferguson predicts Modern Family’s Emmy streak will end this year

Jesse Tyler Ferguson predicts Modern Family’s Emmy streak will end this year

Jesse Tyler Ferguson thinks that as far as the Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy goes, the Modern Family winning streak is poised to come to an end.

The ABC sitcom won the prize for each of its first five seasons and is nominated for a sixth time this year.

‘I think if we win there will be a collective moan in the audience,’ Ferguson said on Access Hollywood Live on Tuesday (25 August).

Modern Family’s competition is FX Network’s Louie, the final season of NBC’s Parks And Recreation, HBO’s Silicon Valley, Amazon’s Transparent, Netflix’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and HBO’s Veep.

Ferguson seems to think the groundbreaking Transparent (‘a great show’) will prevail and also likes the chances of Veep (‘On fire’) and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

Still, he says, ‘It’s great that we’re still in the running.’

Whatever happens, Ferguson will be more relaxed at the 20 September ceremony in Los Angeles since this is the first year since the show began that he was not nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

Ferguson did not win in his five previous nominations. His onscreen husband, Eric Stonestreet, was also passed over this year. Stonestreet has only been nominated three times but has won twice.

With 144 episodes in syndication, Ferguson is aware that the show ‘is on all the time. If you don’t like our show i apologize.’

Among those watching the reruns is Ferguson himself.

‘I like seeing how we’ve all changed – especially the kids,’ he says. ‘It’s like looking at an old photo album.’

Modern Family’s seventh season premiere is on 23 September.

The Feds' RentBoy Raid Is an Attack on LGBTs and Sex Workers

The Feds' RentBoy Raid Is an Attack on LGBTs and Sex Workers
2015-08-25-1440535634-845667-ScreenShot20150825at3.46.23PM.png

On the afternoon of August 25, the feds stormed RentBoy.com‘s Union Square offices, shut down the site and arrested its executives. RentBoy is a New York-based global escort enterprise with over 10,500 workers, reportedly receiving 500,000 visitors per day around the world.

The site has operated within public view for many years. This is not a secretive, dark web enterprise hidden from the public eye. It’s a popular online destination that allows escorts to set their own rules and rates. RentBoy’s platform gives its escorts a degree of agency that sex workers forced to walk the street or be managed by a pimp simply do not have.

RentBoy also tries to give back to the community, aside from the positive impact it has through its own model. The site just introduced a scholarship program early this month to help further education for sex workers and reduce stigma. To be considered for the scholarship, workers were submitting video and written essays with the subject “Why Going to School Is a Part of Achieving My Dream.”

(Watch RentBoy’s Sean Zevran discuss politics, race and pornography below.)

Unfortunately, achieving that dream may’ve just become a lot harder for male sex workers. Using moralistic language, acting Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Kelly Currie said, “Rentboy.com attempted to present a veneer of legality, when in fact this Internet brothel made millions of dollars from the promotion of illegal prostitution.”

Due to archaic laws that criminalize sex work, RentBoy’s administrative employees, including CEO Jeffrey Hurant, are being charged with laundering money and selling sex. The Department of Homeland Security, with the help of the NYPD, took millions of dollars and ripped six employees from their homes. While these employees face huge financial and reputational damage, thousands of sex workers who rely on RentBoy as a safe place to conduct business could find themselves in genuine danger.

The World Health Organization (WHO) calls for the complete decriminalization of sex work because of the unique and unnecessary dangers criminalization places upon workers. WHO places the violence sex workers face in three categories: physical, sexual and psychological/emotional.

Oftentimes, these forms of violence occur in interrelated ways. For example, a physical sexual assault can lead to both HIV transmission and long-term psychological trauma. And we’ve known since at least the 1990s that sex workers are disproportionately targeted for these types of violent attacks, especially economically disadvantaged people of color.

The United States has a responsibility to reform its outdated and violent laws around sex work. RentBoy’s high-profile raid should make us think about all the quiet acts of violence committed by our government against sex workers and LGBT Americans. (The threat level trans women of color face for simply walking out the door is something that should be front-page news across this country.)

Sex workers shouldn’t be forced to live in the shadows, facing violence alone and without access to the basic health and human services those in non-criminalized professions take for granted.

The criminalization of sex work is based in nothing more than petty moral outrage. From the doctors who save our lives to the professors who educate young minds, the number of people who have needed sex work to complete their educations or prevent homelessness is one we don’t discuss enough.

Plus, some people may just enjoy sex work. We supposed-progressives chant about bodily autonomy and criticize the American Right for denigrating women, but we participate in the same denigration when we shame sex workers who conscientiously exercise authority over their bodies.

Let’s take a stand for our neighbors by demanding better from our government and culture when it comes to sex work.

We’ll start by loudly crying “Foul!” on this absurd, offensive RentBoy raid.

Muslim Drag Queen Fires Back At The Haters Following Flood Of Death Threats

Muslim Drag Queen Fires Back At The Haters Following Flood Of Death Threats

IMG_0546-1038x576Muslim Drag Queens, a Channel 4 documentary that examines the lives of gay men and trans women who perform in a way that some view as completely opposite to their religion, aired last night to critical acclaim.

Now it’s being reported that one of the film’s subjects received death threats following Tuesday night’s broadcast.

In the documentary, Asifa Lahore (boy name Asif) can be seen performing at drag shows, fasting during Ramadan and reading the Qu’ran.

He began receiving hate-filled emails shortly after the broadcast, such as “You call yourself a Muslim, you should be ashamed of yourself and killed” and “[we are] going to find [you] and kill [you] like ISIS would”.

One Twitter user posted: “Absolutely repulsed by the ‘Muslim’ drag queens on channel 4. No place for that in Islam at all. The sharia is perfect &needs implementation.”

Lahore posted his own message to all the haters:

#MuslimDragQueens f*** you to all the death threats and I’m gonna look FABULOUS while I’m doing it!

— Asifa Lahore (@AsifaLahore) August 24, 2015

In a statement to Gay Star News, a Channel 4 spokesperson said: “The contributors agreed to take part after extensive discussions about what appearing in the programme would involve and how much this would likely elevate their profiles.”
