Adam Lambert shuts down radio host over ‘silly’ gay jibe
Adam Lambert shut down an Australian radio host for perpetuating gay stereotypes.
While Lambert promoted his new album, The Original High, on a breakfast radio show Friday (31 July), co-host Jackie O suggested that the Ghost Town singer date The Voice Australia judge Ricky Martin – because they’re both single and gay.
But Lambert wasn’t having any of it.
‘Don’t do that, you’re not allowed to do that,’ he said. ‘That’s so silly… “Oh a gay guy and another gay guy, oh you must date,” come on.’
‘No, there’s more to it than that,’ O insisted.
‘Is there?’ Lambert asked skeptically.
‘You’re both in the industry, you both understand each other’s schedule, you’re both hot… it would work,’ O said.
‘Well, that’s very sweet,’ Lambert replied insincerely.
The singer then lambasted Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott for his anti-gay marriage stance.
‘Come on dude, get with the picture,’ he said.
‘I’m sure it will happen. I’ve always thought of Australia as such a progressive place, so liberal.
‘The attitudes here from what I have experienced towards anybody who’s alternative with their sexuality or lifestyle seems pretty open. So I’m sure it will come around soon.’
But Lambert didn’t stay upset for long. After the show, he tweeted:
I had such a lovely time at the show this morning! @kyleandjackieo

Several LGBTI rights protesters arrested in St Petersburg
Police in St Petersburg arrested several LGBTI activists on Sunday (2 August) for staging unsanctioned protests on a Russian military holiday.
The demonstrators were protesting the city government’s repeated refusal to allow a Pride parade.
Yury Gavrikov, the leader of an LGBTI group, did not even make it to his planned one-man picket outside the Hermitage Museum in Palace Square.
Gavrikov was detained as he left his home. He denies the charge leveled against him – cursing in public – and is being held at a police station while he awaits a court hearing.
Several demonstrators that did make it to the square were confronted by paratroopers celebrating Airborne Troops Day, who tore up their banners and rainbow flags.
They were quickly taken away by police.
‘What they do here is not right, it’s terrible,’ veteran Alexander Fadeyev, told the Associated Press.
‘We’re in Russia and not in America. Let them do what they want in America, but not in Russia.’
But some online commenters noted with irony that the homoerotic displays of affection between the soldiers paratroopers ‘wouldn’t look out of place at any Gay Pride rally.’

Freedom of assembly is granted by the Russian Constitution but the country’s notorious gay ‘propaganda’ law is often used to ban or break up Pride parades and LGBTI rights protests.

Transgender woman shot at by 12-year-old boy in Orlando
A 12-year-old boy has been arrested in Orlando for opening fire on a transgender woman.
Shandebine Sherrington, 26, said the boy called her anti-gay slurs before shooting at her seven times on Thursday (30 July) night. She was not hit.
‘I was walking along Church Street, going towards a friend’s house, when I was approached by a 12-year-old saying he was going to kill me,’ the victim told News 13.
‘I don’t know who this individual was and he started shooting at me, chasing me multiple places to shoot at me.’
Sherrington said when she heard the gun was out of bullets, she turned around and started chasing Smith while on the phone to police.
‘I was going to beat him if I would’ve caught him,’ she told WFTV.
The boy, later identified as Joseph Smith, was arrested at the scene and charged with attempted murder and grand theft of a firearm.
A stolen gun was found in a nearby field.
Sherrington said she believed the attack was a hate crime and that it was not the first time she had been targeted for being transgender.
She said she was shot seven times in her leg in an attempted robbery in January last year.
Smith lives with his grandmother, who said he had snuck out of the house that night without her knowledge. She said he has been taking medications for ‘mood swings’ since 2009 and was on probation for trying to steal a pellet gun earlier in the summer.
Smith was not given bond.

Senegal journalist given six months for gay sex
A court in Dakar on Friday (31 July) sentenced a well-known Senegalese journalist to six months in prison for gay sex.
Tamsir Jupiter Ndiaye was arrested in June after he was accused of attempted rape by an teenage boy.
He was cleared of two other charges of driving under the influence – in the Muslim-majority country during Ramadan – and kidnapping a minor.
The magazine columnist said he had offered the boy a lift because he was fighting with his friends.
Ndiaye said he was then pursued by a group of young men and took refuge in a police station to save himself from being lynched.
‘Those who accused me just wanted to destroy me,’ he told the judge.
‘I have other things to do than flirt with a child. These accusations have shocked me.’
‘Acts against nature’ are illegal in the West African country and punishable by up to five years prison and fines of up to $2,500.
The prosecutor had requested the maximum term.
In 2012, Ndiaye was given a four-year sentence for a previous gay sex conviction but was given a presidential pardon the following year.

Vietnam Pride finishes three-day celebrations with bike rally
Vietnamese Pride takes place on bikes and in the rain this year with nearly 400 people celebrating on Sunday.
Persistent rains did not deter festivalgoers marching in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam.
This year’s Pride was the fourth, but was slightly smaller than last year’s with around 600 people attending.

The US ambassador for Vietnam Ted Osius joined the parade with his husband, Clayton Bond. He wrote on Facebook: ‘When promoting human rights, even heavy rain can’t stop those who are committed to advancing Vietnam’s future in the Viet Pride bike ride.
‘Starting at Giang Vo lake and ending at the American Club, more than 300 cyclists lit up the buzzing streets and grey sky with their enthusiasm and commitment to “We Are Queer! We are Here!”
‘Take a stand to support equality in Vietnam!’
Though there were no corporate sponsors, PricewaterhouseCoopers supported the message of inclusion and diversity in the workplace.
After the festival, which lasted three days, many people attended an after-party at a bar called the American Club.
LGBTI rights in Vietnam have seen rapid advancement over the last few years; including the government lifting a ban on gay marriage in January this year.
