The trial of three individuals accused of attacking a gay couple in Philadelphia last fall has been delayed as the defendants consider a plea deal from prosecutors.

Kevin Harrigan (26), Kathryn Knott (24), and Philip Williams (24) are charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, conspiracy and recklessly endangering another person. It was almost one year ago that we reported on the heinous assault that left one of the victims with a broken jaw.

After a judge granted the accused a continuance on Friday, allowing them more time to consider the plea deal, their trial was tentatively scheduled for September 17.

Philadelphia Gay News reports on the status of the plea deals:

The District Attorney’s Office has offered plea deals to all three, the details of which they have declined to make public. Prosecutor Michael Barry told PGN this week that “there are still some discussions regarding a non-trial disposition on going,” prompting the request for a continuance.

Meanwhile, attorneys for the defendants insist their clients “steadfastly maintain their innocence” even as they consider the deal from prosecutors, as The New Civil Rights Movement points out.

Why Am I Really Wearing This Dress?

Why Am I Really Wearing This Dress?

Gendered clothing is a huge facet of our society. It was only in the past hundred years that a woman wearing pants was considered socially acceptable, and it was instilled in me at an early age that men do not wear dresses and women do. These ideas stem from transmisogyny, homophobia, strict gender roles and really salty unfashionable people. If you ask anyone why things had to be this way, would they have a practical reason for it? Or would they make up some weird gender-normative shit about women giving birth or doing housework more easily in a dress?

On an average summer day, I wear dresses because they are usually much easier to put on than pants. Regardless, the association of dresses with femininity is still a part of our culture. People will inevitably think of me as more feminine and gentle just based on this dress as opposed to sweaty and desiring air ventilation.

Read this gay man’s letter to the family who disowned him and his dad’s hate-filled reply

Read this gay man’s letter to the family who disowned him and his dad’s hate-filled reply

It is true that sometimes parents do not deserve the own children they raise.

This is definitely true for one gay man who was disowned by his Christian parents when he came out to them three years ago.

Posting on Reddit, B.G. said he met his boyfriend shortly after coming out. In April, his boyfriend proposed to him.

‘I haven’t talked with my parents much since first coming out to them, what little I did always turned ugly fairly quickly, so I knew that my parents would never approve, but I had to at least tell them that the wedding was happening,’ he said.

So he wrote them a letter.

I hope this letter finds you well. I love you and miss you dearly. I am writing this letter to tell you about what has happened over the last three years.

Three years ago I came out to you as gay. This was not out of rebellion, malice, or because of the influence of some carnal world. This was the result of years of careful introspection about my life, my feelings, and my happiness. I knew that the result of my coming out would cause a deep and lasting division between myself and my family, which I deeply regret, but I absolutely do not regret my decision to come out to you. I know that nothing I can say will change your minds about this, so I won’t try. Instead I would like to share with you the happiness that I have found.

Three years ago, I met someone who took my breath away. This person was incredibly kind, caring, handsome, and smart. We hung out together with friends for several months, and our friendship grew closer until we were talking to each other every day. We started dating, and I realized that there was something extraordinarily special about this person. I was becoming a better, stronger person as we grew closer. We moved in together one year after we met. Every day, our bond grew stronger. Together we learned how to complement our strengths and weaknesses, and we fell deeper in love. We shared amazing adventures as another year went by. We traveled, found jobs, met and reconnected with family; we grew together as a couple. It didn’t take much longer to realize there was no other person I would rather spend the rest of my life with. A few months ago, B. K. asked me to marry him; I said yes, and ever since, I have been so filled with joy, that I cannot stop smiling.

I do not expect you to approve of my relationship with B. I do not expect you to come to our wedding next year. Maybe someday you would be willing to meet him and reconnect our families, but until then I hope you can wish us happiness and prosperity knowing that when I am with B, I am the best and happiest person I’ve ever been.

With Love,

B.G.

His dad responded, saying: ‘What do you plan on doing about your name?’

B.G said: ‘My name will be B. A. K. G’, so taking his fiance’s last name K as a middle name.

His dad then said: ‘My name was NEVER to be given to another man. Only to a Godly female as your wife. You are the last G male and I will NOT have my name associated with this “marriage”. I do not want it hyphenated with another man’s name either. Just remove it entirely and let my legacy die with me.’

Reflecting on the message he got from his dad, B.G. said: ‘So that’s it then. I couldn’t believe the hatred that was being directed toward me.

‘I’m done trying to be nice to them. I don’t care any more. I get to marry and spend the rest of my life with the man I love, and that “marriage” will be just as real as his “marriage” is now.

‘I don’t need my parents or my last name. It’s amazing, I don’t really feel sad about this. It feels more like a heavy burden has been lifted off of me, and I can move on now.

‘My blood family doesn’t have to support me, because the family of friends I have gained after coming out is bigger, better, and loves me for who I am no matter what.

‘My wedding is going to be a party filled with people who love and support me, and I can’t wait to celebrate starting a new family with the man I love.’

Good for you B.G! Have an amazing wedding.

'Real Housewives' Hires First Transgender Cast Member: Reports

'Real Housewives' Hires First Transgender Cast Member: Reports

Bravo has hired its first transgender “Real Housewives” cast member, TMZ reports.

Sources told TMZ that Amiyah Scott will replace Atlanta housewife NeNe Leakes, who announced in June that she wouldn’t be returning for the popular reality TV show’s eighth season.

Sources confirmed the news to The Wrap.

Amiyah transitioned about 10 years ago, when she was 17, The Wrap reported. Her Twitter bio identifies her as a model and makeup guru.

Bravo didn’t return a request for comment from HuffPost.

Scott’s fans have already begun flooding her Twitter and Instagram profiles with congratulations:

This has been a huge year for transgender actors.

“Orange Is The New Black” star Laverne Cox won a Daytime Emmy Award in April for producing MTV and Logo’s “The T Word,” a documentary about trans youth. She was also named Glamour’s Woman Of The Year in 2014.

In May, Olympic skiing legend and “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” star Bruce Jenner came out as transgender and announced she would use the name Caitlyn. Days later, Scott Turner Schofield became the first transgender man to have a major role in a daytime soap opera.

Glittery letter to anti-gay marriage Australian MP sparks terror scare

Glittery letter to anti-gay marriage Australian MP sparks terror scare

Six police cars, six fire trucks and one hazardous materials unit were dispatched to deal with a glitter filled envelope yesterday after it appeared in the mail for an Australian lawmaker who opposes same-sex marriage.

Progressive activist group GetUp had sent the letter as part of a campaign to highlight the failure of Australia’s politicians to achieve marriage equality and it was only one of 99 glitter filled letters sent to senators and MPs from the Australian Parliament.

The letters said GetUp’s members had bought the glitter to celebrate same-sex marriages in Australia which they had hoped would be able to take place before the end of the year.

‘But your party (not the kind you buy glitter for) messed with our plans,’ the letters read.

‘We’ve had to put those plans on hold – indefinitely by the looks of it, thanks to your party’s abject confusion on the issue. And we’re really not happy about it.’

The letter said the lawmakers were being sent the glitter as until same-sex marriage is legalized nobody can make use of it.

However only the staff of Liberal backbencher Craig Laundy interpreted the letter as threatening and alerted the authorities, causing a brief terror scare.

‘6 police cars, 6 fire trucks and 1 Hazmat unit… The emergency response today when my staff found a suspicious package in our PO Box was tremendous,’ Laundy posted to Facebook yesterday about the incident.

‘It has since been discovered that it was a stupid stunt by GetUp. I’m all for organizations making contact with me, but to send any undeclared substance through the mail to the office of a Member of Parliament will inevitably cause alarm and divert important police and emergency services from their critical work.’

‘Thank you to Burwood LAC – NSW Police Force for their outstanding effort in undertaking a professional response to a grossly irresponsible act.’

Laundy is a virtual unknown in Australian politics with no political portfolio, having only been elected to parliament in 2013, and few Australian voters outside his own electorate would even know his name so his office’s response to the incident was widely ridiculed on social media.

‘I used to have Laundy liked on Facebook but I’m gone,’ one former follower wrote.

‘Sure, staff can make a mistake about glitter but continuing the error of judgement by attacking someone else shows the ongoing lack of self awareness consistent with the Liberal Party. I thought for a moment Laundy was different. Another error in judgement. This time on my part.’

‘It was a harmless act and you have over reacted to suit your own political motivations,’ another follower posted.

‘This kind of thing will keep happening until equal rights for all has been achieved in this country. It’s sad you can’t see the humor and instead choose to initiate a slander campaign. We’re talking about a group of people who’s human rights are being denied by people like you.’

Laundy later clarified that the authorities had been called before the letter was opened after a staffer, who had recently undergone security training, felt a powdery substance inside the envelope.

GetUp have since released an apology for the incident.

‘GetUp would like to express its regret for this misunderstanding and confusion,’ a spokeswoman told The Guardian Australia.

‘We hope nobody was unduly concerned for an extended period by the glitter. Obviously we regret any undue concern that this caused or any time wasted, as it was merely a way demonstrate our concern for an important issue.’

Neverland, one of the nation’s rising circuit parties, kicked off Market Days in Chicago with a tribal-themed party entitled “Origins.” Headlined by DJs Isaac Escalante (Mexico) and Alain Jackinsky (Montreal), the event was the largest undertaking by Neverland’s team of costume and set designers as they sought to turn Circuit Nightclub into a Mayan jungle full of go-go dancers and drag queens in ancient tribal headdresses and regalia.

Gay Cowboys Awarded $43K From Texas County Over Denied Marriage License

Gay Cowboys Awarded $43K From Texas County Over Denied Marriage License

Cato

A Texas county clerk’s refusal to issue a marriage license to a same-sex couple has cost taxpayers more than $43,000.

The Hood County Commission has agreed to settle a lawsuit against Clerk Katie Lang, who cited her religious beliefs in refusing to issue a marriage license to Jim Cato and Joe Stapleton (above) following the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges.

After Cato and Stapleton, a couple of 27 years, filed a federal lawsuit, Lang quickly relented and issued the license — but it would be too late.

LangLang (right), represented by the anti-gay Liberty Institute, could have been on the hook for more than half a million dollars in attorney’s fees and damages, according to Cato and Stapleton’s attorneys. However, the couple agreed to forego damages, and the attorneys cut their hourly rate in half to avoid protracted litigation.

Pat O’Connell, one of the couple’s attorneys, said in a release announcing the settlement (believed to be the first in a case where a county clerk refused to issue a same-sex marriage license):

“It is a shame that Hood County Clerk Katie Lang refused to follow the rule of law, causing our clients to go through the difficulties of hiring lawyers and filing a federal lawsuit to obtain the marriage license to which they are constitutionally entitled. And it is sad that the taxpayers of Hood County have to pay the price for their elected official’s misconduct.”

Jan Soifer, another attorney for Cato and Stapleton, added:

“Marriage equality is finally the law of the land. Instead of seeking legal advice from the Hood County Attorney about the impact of the law on her official responsibilities,Hood County Clerk Katie Lang turned to a private attorney from the Liberty Institute, putting her own personal political goals ahead of her responsibilities to Hood County taxpayers. Clerk Lang’s actions in violation of her legal duties forced our clients to file their lawsuit. Clerk Lang is fortunate that the Hood County Commissioners agreed to resolve the lawsuit now to save her from dealing with the additional expense and significant financial exposure her actions caused the taxpayers of her county.”

And Cato said:

“We are overjoyed that justice was done, and grateful to our lawyers for forcing the County Clerk to follow the law, something she was unwilling to do before our lawyers stepped in to represent us. We are very happy that we finally received our marriage license and were able to celebrate our marriage at our home in Granbury.”

Cato and Stapleton’s attorneys say they’ll donate a portion of their earnings to the Equality Texas Foundation, so Lang can take comfort in knowing her refusal to issuing a same-sex marriage license will ultimately help fund a gay-rights group.

Now, perhaps Lang should put in a call to Clerk Kim Davis in Rowan County, Kentucky, to advise her as to the consequences of violating same-sex couples’ civil rights.

Watch CNN’s report on the case from last month below.
