Sam Smith Exposes Homophobic Instagram Account Created to Attack Him

Sam Smith

Sam Smith is bringing attention to homophobia by pointing out an anti-gay Instagram created deliberately to spew hate speech about him.

The account in question, @GAYSAMSMITH, has a profile that reads,

“WE HATE SAM SMITH. there is a fag, his name is sam. when he’s on, I like to cry. he is gay but that’s okay, we can all make fun of him.”

Sam shared a screen-grab of the account on his own Instagram to raise awareness about homophobia. Sam wrote,

“This genuinely doesn’t offend me, coz I’m way too tick skinned when it comes to this kind of shit. BUT I just wanted to share this with everyone, so you can see how homophobia is still SO PRESENT in our society!!”

So present, indeed.

Smith’s post has over 83,000 likes as of this posting.

Laverne Cox stars in the sex ed video we all wish we had at school

Laverne Cox stars in the sex ed video we all wish we had at school

Sex ed is possibly the most uncomfortable class you can have at school. Even if the teachers aren’t telling you to just stay abstinent and that homosexuality is evil.

But even if they did bring up safe sex, everyone was probably too busy squeaming to take any notice.

So John Oliver in the latest Last Week Tonight tackled the problem of sex ed in American schools. And for it, he brought in a group of stars to actually teach students what they need to know.

This included Laverne Cox, Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally and Kristen Schaal, and it turns out the Orange Is The New Black actress knows her way around a banana.

Watch it below (skip to 17:00 to skip the intro):

How Peaches Rocked Yo! Sissy, Berlin’s First Queer Music Festival

How Peaches Rocked Yo! Sissy, Berlin’s First Queer Music Festival

Pansy and Scout

Sometimes (well, oftentimes), there are just too many options for things to do in Berlin — especially as a young gay guy. When I first heard about Yo! Sissy,of the city’s newest queer festival, I was excited to see what Berlin could pull together. This is one of the gayest cities in the world, and certainly one of the most exciting for music, creativity, arts and new culture.

The three-day festival started at SchwuZ, an indie gay club popular with these kinds of events — queer, friendly, social and with a tinge of activism. There were fairly energetic crowds, even if the venue wasn’t crowded, but performances by The Hidden Cameras (supported by the local chorus Pet Shop Bears0 and JD Samson) kept the atmosphere up. The second day of the festival was a miss for me, but the real highlight was the final night taking place at SO36, right in the heart of Kreuzberg and the soul of Berlin’s gay punk scene.

For a Sunday night, the place was fantastically crowded: colorful decorations hanging from the ceiling, people spilling out onto the street. I entered sometime just before midnight, catching a fierce act from The Familyyy Fierce, a drag group from the UK. Co-organizers of the Yo!Sissy Festival, Pansy and Scout, shared some moments on stage talking about the crazy weekend to an overwhelmingly supportive crowd. The room was crowded and when Christeene, a punk act described as “a human pissor of raw unabashed sexuality” from Austin, Texas, took the stage things got crazier than I’d seen all weekend. Within moments, there was already plenty of ass on display and a sweaty butt plug flung into the audience. Christeene, spitting drinks over the audience at front and screaming at people to turn off their phones was weird, raw and wonderful. I couldn’t pull my eyes away.

Peaches

The night ended with a fiery performance from the one and only Peaches in a special short set. Right on the heels of her newest album release, Peaches gave one of those performances you expect at a queer event. There was an intensity to it, and ending with her hit “Fuck the Pain Away” while sharing the stage with Pansy and The Familyyy Fierce — well, let’s just say the atmosphere was totally…alive. And it felt absolutely amazing to be a part of it, to be there and witness the raw energy of a queer scene that’s still finding its place. I really enjoyed so much about the festival: the music, the design, the political messages and the acts.

The clear high point of the festival was the incredible diversity, with lots of trans and lesbians and bears and all the sizes and flavors of the LGBT community. The music was diverse too, from DJ sets to pop. Berlin needs this festival. It was a huge step for Berlin’s queer community. The world needs more festivals like this — ones borne out of a passion and love for a movement, for art, for queerness.

Scroll down for a few more photos from the fest.

London gay pub George and Dragon to close

London gay pub George and Dragon to close

The London gay scene is set to face another loss as much-loved Shoreditch venue The George & Dragon is set to close.

Opened in December 2002, the East London pub has played host to a mixed scene with a big LGBTI following.

Despite seven years remaining on the lease, a recent increase in rent has forced the owners to put the pub up for sale.

Richard Battye, the pub owner, said on Facebook: ‘On Monday, following several fraught months, we put the lease for The George & Dragon up for sale.

‘Despite seven years remaining, a recent rent review has caused a dramatic increase in the cost of our lease and we don’t feel we can meet the payments and keep The George & Dragon as it is so we have decided, a little earlier than intended, that now is the time to wrap things up.

‘It is possible that someone out there may have the vision and the money to keep something of the spirit going – which would be a dream.

‘We will be looking for a new opportunity and hope very much that some of our dear G&D fans will be able to join us on this new journey soon.

‘We’ll try to be as open as we can throughout this process as we’d love as friends as possible to join us for a drink as we begin to bid farewell to our beloved old pub.’

Many customers paid tribute to the pub, with many crediting the venue with being among the first ‘anti-social clubs’ of Shoreditch.

One woman said: ‘This makes me so sad, I met my wife at the G&D a hot summer night in 2008. So many good memories.’

And another customer said: ‘You were my local for 10 years. Thanks for all the good nights.’

A number of gay bars have closed in London recently. The Black Cap, a historic gay pub in Camden, closed in April this year – although there is still a strong campaign to save it. The Royal Vauxhall Tavern is also supposedly under threat.

Other pubs and clubs to close recently include Barcode, Candy Bar and Madame Jojo’s. Plans to redevelop The Yard, another gay bar in Soho, were scrapped in May.

Mexico Supreme Court strikes down gay adoption ban

Mexico Supreme Court strikes down gay adoption ban

Mexico’s Supreme Court has ruled that banning same-sex couples from adopting children is unconstitutional.

Justices on Tuesday (11 August) struck down a gay adoption ban in the southern state of Campeche by nine votes to one. The challenge to the 2013 law was filed by the state human rights commission, who argued it violated constitutional rights to non-discrimination and form families.

Gay marriage and adoption are legal in most of the Catholic-majority country, but opposition is stiff in several far-flung states states.

Presiding judge Luis Maria Aguila said they were looking after the interests of children, according to Latin American TV network TeleSUR.

‘I see no problem for a child to be adopted in a society of co-existence, which has precisely this purpose. Are we going to prefer to have children in the street, which according to statistics exceed 100,000?’ he said.

The only judge to vote for the ban, Eduardo Medina Mora, said adoption should prioritize children, not those who want to adopt them.

In June, the Supreme Court found state laws that restricted marriage only to heterosexual couples were discriminatory, effectively legalizing gay marriage nationwide.
