This Is What It's Like For Gay Men To Hold Hands In Jerusalem

Israeli news website Ynet took to the streets of Jerusalem with a video experiment aimed at exposing the levels of homophobia in the city after last month’s grisly Pride attack.

As Ynet’s hidden cameras rolled, two men, Shai and Ophir, held hands as they traversed the city. Some pedestrians cast awkward glances and stares at the couple, while others shouted homophobic epithets at them as they strolled down alleys and market passageways.

“Motherf*ckers,” one passerby mumbles, according to Ynet’s translations. Another shouts, “Gay sons of bitches!”

The clip’s tone recalls another video recently posted to YouTube by ChebuRussia TV, which showed two Russian men being shoved and berated by passersby as they walked hand-in-hand through the streets of Moscow.

On July 30, a man brandished a knife and stabbed six people at Jerusalem’s Gay Pride parade. One of the victims, identified as 16-year-old Shira Banki, died days later.

The suspect, Yishai Schlissel, who is identified as an “anti-gay ultra-Orthodox extremist” by the Associated Press, had reportedly been released from prison just three weeks beforehand, after having been convicted of a 2005 gay pride parade attack that wounded several people.

Ynet’s Nir Cohen wrote that the video had been staged in an effort to gauge social views of same-sex couples in Jerusalem following the attack, which has shaken Israel’s image as an LGBT-friendly travel destination.

Former Mr. Gay World Charl Van Den Berg Has Died, Praised For Activism

Former Mr. Gay World Charl Van Den Berg Has Died, Praised For Activism

CharlVanDenBergjpgThere’s some very sad news out of South Africa today with word that Charl van den Berg has lost his battle with lymphatic cancer at age 33. He won the world crown in 2010 after being being named the South African Mr Gay King in his native country in 2009.

The following statement was posted on the Mr. Gay World site:

It is with deep sorrow that we learned of the passing of one of the prominent members of the Mr. Gay World family, Charl van den Berg, Mr. Gay World 2010 from South Africa who lost his mercifully short battle with lymphatic cancer.

It is with fond memories that we remember when Charl stepped off the bus in Oslo, Norway for the first time and one of the Directors remarked: ‘That is one to watch’. And indeed he was, continuing to make an impression on his fellow delegates, the judges and the audience, winning Mr. Gay World 2010 against stiff competition from Australia and Hong Kong in style.

Throughout his reign, Charl continued to uphold the ethos and message of Mr. Gay World wherever he travelled, making friends around the world. He attended Prides in Europe, representing the organisation and was sent to the Philippines to lay the foundations of the next competition in Manila, meeting with press and organisers. He was prominently featured in the media, and did many interviews for television, living up to his role as ambassador for LGBT rights and a role model for LGBT youth.

He was loved not only in the Philippines, taking part in the Red Ribbon HIV-awareness campaign in that country, but all around the world and especially in his home country of South Africa, where his win was the first positive LGBT news other than legal challenges to discriminatory laws to be featured on the front pages and lamp posts around that country.

Charl always conducted himself in a friendly, approachable and exemplary fashion, keeping his feet firmly on the ground and doing the job he was chosen for without airs and graces. His infectious laughter and warm character made him an absolute pleasure to work with. He stayed on to assist and support the organisation long after his reign, attending subsequent finals in Johannesburg and Antwerp and being involved in the local Mr. Gay South Africa competition up to 2014.

On the night that he handed his Mr Gay World crown to his successor in Manila in 2011, there was not a dry eye in the house when he serenaded the audience with a farewell song.

We have lost a member of our family, a hero and a friend. Charl van den Berg will always be an icon to many around the world.

You will always be in our hearts. Go well friend.

Pat Robertson: Gays and the Christians Who Accept Them Will Rot In Hell – VIDEO

Pat Robertson: Gays and the Christians Who Accept Them Will Rot In Hell – VIDEO

Pat Robertson

Televangelist troll Pat Robertson isn’t expecting to meet any gay-loving Christians in heaven, as his recent answer to a viewer question seems to suggest.

Said Robertson:

To have a church that says [homosexuality] is not a sin, it’s okay, they’re leading people down a road to perdition which is a shame but if I were you I’d stay far away from them.

Robertson also recently lumped same-sex marriage into the “flood of evil” that is destroying America today. Good stuff.

Larry Kramer On ‘Stonewall’ Boycott: ‘Don’t Listen To The Crazies’

Larry Kramer On ‘Stonewall’ Boycott: ‘Don’t Listen To The Crazies’

Playwright and longtime lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) and HIV/AIDS activist Larry Kramer spoke out over the weekend about a proposed boycott of the upcoming film “Stonewall.”

Controversy erupted in the queer community last week after a two minute trailer for the film was released, causing some queer and trans activists to claim the trailer misrepresents who was actually at The Stonewall Inn on the night of the famous riots. After viewing the trailer, some activists claimed that the film “whitewashes” the well-known Stonewall narrative by erasing drag queens, transgender pioneers and queer people of color that played an integral role the night of the rebellion, which is often cited as the beginning of the mainstream gay rights movement.

Kramer, a legend in the queer community who has shaped and informed the course of HIV/AIDS activism, took a public stance on the issue by commenting on fellow AIDS activist Peter Staley’s shared Facebook post of director Roland Emmerich’s statement in defense of the film:

don’t listen to the crazies. for some reason there is a group of “activists” that insists on maintaining their prime importance and participation during this riot. unfortunately there seems no one left alive to say “it wasnt that way at all”, or “who are or where the fuck were you.” as with so much history there is no way to “prove” a lot of stuff, which allows artists such as yourself (and me I might add) to take essences and attempt to find and convey meaning and truth. i sincerely hope this boycott your film shit peters out. we are not dealing with another “Cruising” here. keeping your film from being seen is only hurting ourselves. good luck and thank you for your passion. larry kramer

What are your thoughts about his statement?

Republican who made up fake story about having sex with gay rentboy to hide affair refuses to resign

Republican who made up fake story about having sex with gay rentboy to hide affair refuses to resign

A Republican lawmaker has said he will not resign after falsely claiming he was caught having sex with a gay rentboy in order to hide an alleged affair with a female politician.

Todd Causer, of Michigan, has apologized to his family, his constituents and the family of his alleged lover Republican Cindy Gamrat.

He claims he was the target of a blackmail attempt.

On Friday, The Detroit News cited audio recordings reporting that Courser had a staff member send an email to distract attention from his alleged affair.

In a long, rambling, over 27 minute audio statement, Courser thanked those who have ‘prayed’ for him and his family and attempted to explain why he, personally, sent the email.

‘My actions in and around these events in the email that was sent to misdirect attention were my doing both in planning and execution,’ Courser said.

Claiming he was sent an anonymous text threatening to reveal the information, he says he sent the email to try to get the blackmailer to expose themselves.

‘It was over the top, it was wrong, and as soon as the steps were taken, I can tell you how it worked out, but… it was not my finest moment,’ Courser added.

But despite many people calling for him to resign, he has refused.

‘But to change the country, men and women must be able to stand unafraid even when they’re a broken messenger. And I’m a certainly a broken messenger,’ he said.

‘I have chosen to stay and make them play their hand. I think it is absolutely necessary to have these clandestine operations to control public officials be exposed. So I have refused to leave quietly and have decided that these efforts really need to come out.’
