New York home defaced with anti-gay slur

The home of a New York gay couple was vandalized with the slur ‘Jenner fags.’

According to WNYT.com, the graffiti was noticed by Lyle Houston on Thursday morning (23 July). He called partner John Mcenerney after discovering the damage to their Wynantskill home. Wynantskill is located approximately 8 miles from Albany.

‘You would think my initial gut reaction would be like, “oh my God, I fear for my life.” I kind of feel more sorry for the person that they felt it was necessary to try to destroy somebody’s house,’ Mcenerney said to WNYT.

Both men report they are on good terms with neighbors. Neither is transgender; Mcenerney is confused why the spray-painting included the reference to Caitlyn Jenner.

Other damages include a a broken window pane on a side door and Houston’s Jeep window.

The two men say local police are investigating.

‘It’s kind of ridiculous that in this day and age we have to see stuff like this happen, but it does, even in Wynantskill,’  Mcenerney said to WNYT.

Below is a video of the WNYT report.

Lesbian Couple At Center of Cake Baking Controversy Finally Break Their Silence

Lesbian Couple At Center of Cake Baking Controversy Finally Break Their Silence

cryer

By now everyone on the planet has likely heard the story of Sweet Cakes, the Oregon bakery found guilty of discriminating against a lesbian couple and fined $135,000 because of the emotional and physical suffering they caused after denying the couple a wedding cake in January 2013.

In the ongoing culture war coverage of the case, however, one side of the story has been noticeably absent: the lesbian couple’s.

In an interview with Willamette Week, Rachel Cryer and Laurel Bowman finally break their silence on the story and detail the shame and embarrassment felt after being turned away from Sweet Cakes owners Melissa and Aaron Klein.

“People might feel more sympathy for us if somebody hit me rather than just denying me a cake,” admits Rachel. “But the hurt, whether it’s physical or emotional, is the same. We are treated like second-class citizens. That’s whether you want to deny me something or walk up and hit me just because I was born gay.

Rachel says she first discovered the Gresham bakery online in 2011 when she was looking for a wedding cake to celebrate her mother’s remarriage. She says she and her mother developed a “rapport” with Melissa and that the cake was “the most impressive thing about my mom’s wedding.”

Rachel also notes Melissa Klein knew she was in a relationship with another woman and had initially told her to come back if she needed another wedding cake (a claim the Kleins’ lawyer disputes) .

Laurel recalls:

Actually [Melissa Klein] said, “Have you thought about getting married?” and Rachel said, “Oh no, I’m never getting married.” And we just made the joke about it, and she said, “Well, if you decide to, come back.” And that was the last thing we really said about it.

Following the death of a close friend of Laurel’s in 2011, Rachel and Laurel stepped up to foster the friend’s two children and began to reconsider the idea of marriage after they decided they wanted to adopt the kids.

“I never wanted to have children, but when the children were placed with us, we had the option to help these kids that I already loved so much.” says Rachel “And they needed us so much, and they’d been through so much, I felt like they needed the stability of knowing that we were committed both to each other and to them.”

With marriage on the mind, Rachel (accompanied by her mother) returned to Sweet Cakes seeking a wedding cake of her own, but the warm reception they expected was nowhere to be found. Aaron Klein quoted a Bible verse calling homosexuality an “abomination” and told Rachel that Sweet Cakes would not serve them.

“I was just humiliated that this happened in front of my mom, whom I spent all these years trying to convince that we deserved equal accommodation, and we deserve rights, and we deserve to be able to get married,” says Rachel.

Rachel returned home distraught and Laurel reacted by reaching for her phone and filing what she thought was a Better Business Bureau complaint.

“It turned out to be an Oregon Department of Justice complaint,” explains Laurel. “I didn’t know you could do something like that on a phone. I just thought it was a comment.”

After finding out about the complaint, the Aaron Klein posted the document on his Facebook, complete with Rachel and Laurel’s phone number and address. That’s when the death threats and vitriol started pouring in.

“Our neighbors had dropped off notes on our doorstep saying they don’t agree with what we are doing to this good, decent Christian family,” explains Laurel. “Your own neighbors are against you, and they’ve known you for years.”

The two women were forced to contact the FBI and later took the children and left the home, fearing the publicity would hurt their adoption efforts. The couple hoped the situation would blow over but the abuse and media circus continued.

After consulting family members,  Rachel and Laurel decided to file a formal complaint with the Bureau of Labor and Industries to “defend ourselves and stop being bullied” and “show our children that you’re going to face a lot of adversity in life, but you have to stand up for yourself and you have to stand up for what you believe in.”

Since then, as you’re no doubt aware, the Kleins have become the poster couple for the right-wing’s crusade against both marriage equality and non-discrimination protections. They’ve teamed up with the anti-LGBT hate group Family Research Council and raised over $450,000 through crowdfunding sources.

The entire interview HERE is absolutely a must read, not only to better understand the story but also to get a sense of what these women went through. The anti-gay side has been hard at work “humanizing” the other side of this controversy. It’s time we did the same for the real victims.

Obama Speaks Out For LGBT Rights In Kenya

Obama Speaks Out For LGBT Rights In Kenya

President Barack Obama spoke out forcefully in favor of LGBT rights during a press conference with Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta in Nairobi on Saturday, saying that the idea that a “law-abiding citizen” could be treated differently under the law was simply wrong.

Some African leaders had warned Obama not to raise the issue of LGBT rights on the trip. Being gay is illegal in Kenya.

Asked about the status of LGBT Kenyans on Saturday, Obama did not hesitate to speak out in favor of equality.

“I’m unequivocal on this. If somebody is a law-abiding citizen who is going about their business and working in a job and obeying the traffic signs and doing all the other things that all citizens are supposed to do, and not harming anybody, the idea that they are gonna be treated differently or abused because of who they love is wrong, full stop,” Obama said.

Obama also warned that when one group is denied equal rights by a government, others can be affected as well.

“When a government gets in the habit of treating people differently, those habits can spread. And as an African-American in the United States, I am painfully aware of what happens when people are treated differently under the law,” Obama said. “All sorts of rationalizations that were provided by the power structure for decades in the United States for segregation and Jim Crow and slavery and they were wrong.”

Kenyatta seemed unmoved by Obama’s comments, saying that LGBT equality was not a priority for most Kenyans right now and that it was not a value shared with the United States.

“There are some things that we must admit we don’t share. Our culture, our societies don’t accept. So it’s very difficult for us to be able to impose that which they themselves do not accept,” Kenyatta said. “This is why I repeatedly say that for Kenyans today, the issue of gay rights is really a non-issue. We want to focus on other areas that are day-to-day living for our people.”

Among those issues, Kenyatta said, are including women in the economy, health, infrastructure and entrepreneurship.

“Maybe once we overcome some of these challenges, we can begin to look at new ones,” Kenyatta said.

Jason Stuart Talks Being An Out Actor and LGBT Equality (AUDIO)

Jason Stuart Talks Being An Out Actor and LGBT Equality (AUDIO)
This week I talked with Jason Stuart one of the most prolific character actors and an outrageous openly gay stand-up comedian. Jason Stuart has been in over 175 films and TV shows and has performed in major LGBT events, the Montreal Comedy Festival, Broadway, Comedy Clubs and to 100,000 people at the Millennium March in Washington D.C. Currently Jason’s in TANGERINE the breakout hit from this year’s Sundance Film Festival which was shot entirely on an iPhone 5S from filmmaker Sean Baker. Jason also just completed a dramatic supporting role as the plantation owner in Nat Turner’s biopic BIRTH OF A NATION from filmmaker Nate Parker who stars in the film along with Armie Hammer. Recently as the National Co-Chair of the Screen Actors Guild-AFTRA LGBT Committee, Jason presented the first ever Transgender Actor Panel at OUTFEST with Alexandra Billings (TRANSPARENT) Mya Taylor (TANGERINE) and D’Lo (SENSE 8). I talked to Jason about his fabulous career and his spin on our LGBT issues.
LISTEN:

When asked what he would like to see happen for LGBT equality in the next few years Stuart stated:

The next issue we’re going to jump on is housing and job discrimination. I remember when I was working for HRC fifteen years ago I was doing a lot of comedy shows for their dinners and I remember people were being quite upset when gay marriage was brought up because they didn’t like the idea; marriage equality had not really been discussed. People thought that was such a big thing and that people would never go for it. Well it took over fifteen years for marriage equality to happen and they weren’t really focused on job discrimination and housing and now those are the next two issues that I’m part of. But what I’m really part of in my own life is trying to do things from where I stand. Eight or nine years ago I became the National Co-Chair of the Screen Actors Guild- AFTRA LGBT Committee and I created that committee with Duncan Crabtree-Ireland who’s the Chief Operating Officer & General Counsel at Screen Actors Guild-AFTRA and my idea is to create more opportunity for LGBT actors and it’s happening, slowly but surely. It’s not the idea of roles whether gay or straight parts for the person being an openly gay actor, comedian, singer journalist, stunt person, extra, it’s the idea of them being out and being accepted for who they are and being able to compete for jobs the same way out straight counterparts do and that’s something I’m very much part of.

Jason Stuart has appeared in TV shows including Sleepy Hollow, Real Rob, The Secret Life Of The American Teenager, House, Entourage, The Closer, Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Everybody Hates Chris, George Lopez, My Wife & Kids, Charmed and Will & Grace. In film he’s been featured in Gia (w/Angelina Jolie), A Day Without A Mexican, Coffee Date, Vegas Vacation and Kindergarten Cop. Recently he’s appearing in James Franco’s Holy Land and Ira Sach’s Love Is Strange opposite Marisa Tomei, John Lithgow and Alfred Molina. On the comedy scene his new stand up comedy CD I’M THE DADDY AND I HAVE CANDY was just released on CD Baby & iTunes and he’ll be touring with his new show in the fall I’M ONLY GAY ON THE WEEKENDS. Jason will also be appearing in the comedic parody, HUSH UP SWEET CHARLOTTE? premiering in San Francisco at the historic CASTRO THEATRE on October 28th. Jason plays the role of British Journalist Mr Wills in this hilarious remake starring Varla Jean Merman, Matthew Martin, Mink Stole and David Millbern (Also the Producer). Written and Directed by filmmaker Billy Clift. View his award winning web-series, MENTOR which marked his directorial debut now available on his website.
