'I Interrupted Obama Because We Need To Be Heard'
Pride celebrations of the LGBTQ community are taking place throughout the nation. The community takes great pride in celebrating our diversity and the progress we have made throughout the years. However, for the immigrant LGBTQ community progress has not been fully realized because of the continuous discrimination and violence we face in our daily lives. I was fortunate to be invited to the White House to listen to President Obama’s speech recognizing the LGBTQ community and the progress being made. But while he spoke of ‘trans women of color being targeted,’ his administration holds LGBTQ and trans immigrants in detention. I spoke out because our issues and struggles can no longer be ignored.

The Manspreading Epidemic Has Finally Been Explained By Doctors

The Manspreading Epidemic Has Finally Been Explained By Doctors

THSmith-0023It’s an exposé that you’ve long waited for, particularly if you live in a city with mass public transit where it’s become a problem of epidemic proportions. We’re referring to man-spreading, of course, or in laymen terms: a guy who takes up too much room on the subway or bus by spreading his legs wide in order to accommodate what we can only assume are his massively large balls. Men have actually been arrested for this. It’s that problematic. Now thanks to a dedicated team of researchers we now have a greater understanding and our sympathies have shifted. These poor men have been diagnosed with a genetic condition known as “manspreaditis,” which causes them to walk with their legs permanently divided past the point of comfort. So next time you see one of these poor unfortunates, show some sympathy instead of scorn and shift over.

Bodhi: ‘Haute’

There’s no time like the summertime to drop some ethereal, soulful, deep house music.  Welsh duo Bodhi deliver just that on their new EP, Polysizer. Hearty vocal samples, punctuating synthesizers, and beautiful instrumentals shine on in tracks like ‘DP7‘ and today’s featured song, ‘Haute.’

  • Brooklyn’s Jacques Renault is also back with a lush, deep house track, that has “daytime dance party” written all over it.
  • I still listen to Jessie Ware‘s 2014 Tough Love pretty regularly, so it’s always nice to come across remixes that help reimagine the soulful crooner’s work in a different light. 22 year old Klaves gives Jessie’s ‘Cruel’ a deeper beat and throws in some new instrumentals for good measure.
  • If the title lead track is any indication, Dusky‘s upcoming Skin Deep EP is going to be a huge hit on dance floors across the world. It doesn’t officially drop until July 31st, but the title track is available on Spotify for the time being.
  • Melbourne-based Harris Robotis delivers an enticing invitation for us to ‘Dance All Night.’ The pulsing dance track (featuring Franke Pharaoh) mixes elements of deep house and acid house in a way that only a producer as skilled as Robotis can do so seamlessly.
  • I’ve been a fan of Miss Kittin‘s distinct brand of techno and house since her 2001 hit with The Hacker, ‘Frank Sinatra.’ Kittin, who’s recently been on a massive world tour DJing, teams up with pal Nicolas Masseyeff for their June EP, which includes this dark and sultry banger, ‘My Man.’
  • Dr. Packer is the king of disco re-edits, and this time he’s take on Loretta Holloway‘s ‘Love Sensation.’ It’s tasteful, fun and super upbeat.

OCCUPY THE DISCO (OXD) curates and recommends music events to the gay community in NYC—in an effort to move the focus of the nightlife scene beyond the promoter and venue and to the music itself. OXD’s goal is to educate, entertain, engage and empower the gay audience to reclaim their ability to question and experience the unknown. The OXD Mirror will serve to showcase tunes that are definitely off-the-beaten-path but rightfully deserve the attention of the gay ear.

Check out our newest mixtape, showcasing some of our favorite deep house and tech house tracks of the moment.

Ruby Rose and What Makes Gender Non-Conforming 'Sexy' (Or Not)

Ruby Rose and What Makes Gender Non-Conforming 'Sexy' (Or Not)
Ruby Rose is the girl of the moment. She’s fearless, she’s eloquent and she is, undoubtedly, very good-looking. If Orange is the New Black is loved for diversifying TV and celebrating difference, then Ruby Rose is the perfect casting. Androgyny is not something often considered beautiful, so for her to redefine beauty and still have mass appeal is very exciting. But it does raise questions over why some gender non-conformity is celebrated while other forms are ridiculed or ignored.

A photo posted by Ruby Rose (@rubyrose) on Jun 18, 2015 at 12:16pm PDT

Laverne Cox raised a really interesting point recently about Caitlyn Jenner, or more accurately the reaction to her ‘unveiling.’ In a blog post, Cox notes that Caitlyn was hugely commended for being beautiful, and indeed Cox herself has been heralded many times as beautiful, but actually that can become a problem for women who are less easily able to conform to cisnormative beauty standards.

While Jenner, Cox and Ruby Rose represent different expressions of femininity, they do all share one common trait: they are beautiful by standards widely upheld within western society. Ruby Rose has an exquisite face and a slim body, but would the tattoos and spiky hair be so beloved on a gender non-conformist woman born without traits we consider traditionally beautiful?

Laverne Cox also has a lovely face, as well as long, blonde hair and by her own admission, is in the fortunate position where she can buy the things she needs to conform to beauty standards. Equally, Caitlyn Jenner has been able to spend a lot of money working on her look to make it acceptable for the masses. What about women who aren’t so fortunate, or who decide against conformity?

I didn’t intend this blog to be about trans women, but with the incredible trans movement happening in mainstream culture, it does feel relevant to think about how we are defining ‘beautiful’ and critique the boundaries we have in place for what is and isn’t to be celebrated. To keep it even (or as even as a beauty discussion can ever be when thinking male vs. female), consider men who do not conform to physical gender roles, or express themselves in a way not considered masculine. Boy George was huge in the ’80s, Adam Lambert is huge now and yes, male androgyny is as old as time, but I’m not sure it’s ever been widely considered attractive or celebrated outside of the non-conformist community it is built from.

There was a time when I was relatively androgynous in the way I chose to present myself to the world, and while I think my eyeliner emo days are something to celebrate now, it didn’t come without issues at the time. Even within the gay male community, there is a celebration of butch and a shun of fem. I’m physically fairly gender conformist in my 20s — although lord knows I’ll rock glitter at a festival — but I do think it’s a shame that we can’t celebrate those who don’t, by choice or design, look like Chris Pratt, Beyoncé, Ryan Gosling or Taylor Swift.

Beyoncé is incredible, Ryan Gosling is handsome, and I couldn’t be more of a Laverne Cox fan, but wouldn’t it be amazing if we all lost our collective minds for somebody who doesn’t fit that mould? I’m as guilty of that narrow mind as anyone, but I can’t wait for a time when somebody who doesn’t look the way we think they should breaks through to mass attention and praise — or “slays” as the kids say. Ruby Rose is great, but where is the Big Boo love?

The attendant’s reaction can vary. At best you get an approving smile that says “ah, yes I understand.” But a negative response can be embarrassing, demeaning and hurtful — aka things you should never feel on vacation.

Luckily the world is changing, but to quote Aaron Schock quoting Taytay, “haters are gonna hate.”

Sacramento Man Stabs 3 Men for Wearing ‘Skinny Jeans’ in Alleged Anti-Gay Hate Crime: VIDEO

Sacramento Man Stabs 3 Men for Wearing ‘Skinny Jeans’ in Alleged Anti-Gay Hate Crime: VIDEO

A Sacramento man turned himself in on Tuesday night for an alleged anti-gay assault on three musicians during which he used homophobic slurs. The reason he attacked them? They were wearing skinny jeans.

The L.A. Times reports:

Timothy Brownell, 25, was wanted on hate crime charges after allegedly yelling a homophobic slur at the musicians Sunday and assaulting them with a knife because of their skinny jeans, Sacramento police said. He turned himself in about 9:18 p.m. Tuesday at Sacramento County’s main jail.

Brownell was initially arrested after the attack on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and possessing a firearm but was released on bond. Police then issued an arrest warrant for him Monday when the attack was reclassified as a hate crime.

The victims were Alex Lyman (pictured) and Weston Richmond of the band Slaves. The third victim is  Blake Abbey of the band Musical Chairs.

Richmond posted about the attack on Instagram:
