Michael Sam Leaves Montreal Alouettes' Training Camp, Returns To Texas For 'Personal Reasons'

Michael Sam Leaves Montreal Alouettes' Training Camp, Returns To Texas For 'Personal Reasons'

Sam.Michael

Less than a month after joining the Canadian Football League, openly gay defensive end Michael Sam has left the Montreal Alouettes’ training camp and returned to his native Texas for personal reasons.

ESPN.com reports that the team issued a statement on Sam’s departure Friday:

“The Montreal Alouettes organization would like to clarify the situation surrounding international defensive end Michael Sam,” the team said in a statement. “Friday morning, Michael asked the team a special permission to leave training camp and return home for personal reasons.

“The Montreal Alouettes fully respect Michael Sam’s decision and rally around him to offer him all time and support needed. The team has left the door open and Michael is welcome to come back whenever he feels ready.”

The Alouettes were scheduled to play their preseason opener on Saturday. Sam signed a one-year, $100,000 deal with the Alouettes in May.

Yahoo Sports Canada reports that Sam had only one small bag with him when he left, indicating he might be back:

That [the team’s statement] makes it clear that Sam did ask for and receive permission to return home, and that’s positive for his CFL future. It’s also positive that the team sounds enthusiastic about his potential return. However, the time he misses may still affect his chances of being an effective contributor at the CFL level. We’ll see how this plays out.

Last year, Sam became the first openly gay player drafted in the NFL, but he never appeared in a regular season game. He was cut by the St. Louis Rams before joining the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad, but was later released.

Singapore's 'Pink Dot' LGBT Rights Rally Sees Record Turnout

Singapore's 'Pink Dot' LGBT Rights Rally Sees Record Turnout

By Rujun Shen
SINGAPORE, June 13 (Reuters) – Singapore’s Pink Dot gay rights rally drew a record number of participants on Saturday, even as the country remains deeply divided over homosexuality.
In early evening, a mostly young, pink-donned crowd was filling up the small Hong Lim Park, decked out in hot pink balloons and signs, next to Singapore’s central financial district. The event, in its 7th year, included speeches and a concert, while 28,000 participants formed a gigantic human pink dot after night fall, the organizer said.
The event’s spokesman, Paerin Choa, somberly recounted the challenges the gay rights movement had encountered over the past year, including a court decision to uphold a law criminalizing sexual acts between men.
Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said last week that the country was not ready for same-sex marriage, while a “Wear White” movement started by religious groups to counter Pink Dot has entered its second year.
“I hope that they will legalize gay marriage,” said a 20-year-old Danish man, holding up a pink sign with a friend to offer free hugs near a subway exit on the edge of the park.
“Many people have been in the closet for a long time, and perhaps they shouldn’t be afraid,” he said, adding he had not told his parents of his homosexuality but friends had been supportive.
The government has always insisted that Singapore is a conservative society.
Yet one sign of more support for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community is the growing corporate sponsorship for the event. This year, Pink Dot had a record nine corporate sponsors, with new sponsors including social media platform Twitter, financial information company Bloomberg and local movie theater chain Cathay Organization.
“We believe it speaks volumes to Singaporeans to know that a local employer does not discriminate and hires based on merits,” said a spokesman for Cathay.
“Cathay recognizes the value of an inclusive and diversified society especially within the workforce.”
With more countries around the world legalizing gay marriages, businesses are recognizing the economic benefits of adopting a non-discriminative approach to sexuality, both in terms of marketing and recruitment.

Family of Utah Gay Man Forced to Drink Bleach, Had 'Die Fag' Carved Into Arm Say They Won't Be Intimidated: VIDEO

Family of Utah Gay Man Forced to Drink Bleach, Had 'Die Fag' Carved Into Arm Say They Won't Be Intimidated: VIDEO

Rick Jones

The family of the 22-year-old Utah man forced to drink bleach and had “Die Fag” cut into his arm in a horrific string of anti-gay hate crimes is speaking out, saying they won’t be intimidated by the assailants.

“When you attack any member of our family, you attack everybody here. This is not just against my son, it is against every single one of us,” said Terri Jones, Rick Jones’ mother, to Utah station KSL. “We’re not going to back down, we’re not going to close the restaurant if we can keep from it. We’re not going to move from Delta, we’re not going to be afraid. … The only thing we can do is stand strong as a family.”

KSL adds:

The sheriff’s office is investigating several leads and is offering a reward for information about the crimes. The sheriff called the case a priority for his agency, which has assigned multiple detectives to the investigation.

“In all of my years I can’t remember anything like this ever happening before, so it’s something we want to get a handle on as soon as we can,” [Millard County Sheriff Robert] Dekker said.

In the meantime, the Jones family’s pizzeria has been bustling with supportive community members. The Baptist family has lived in Delta for almost 30 years and opened the restaurant about six months ago.

DabakisAccording to The Salt Lake Tribune, Sen. Jim Dabakis, the only openly gay member of the Utah Legislature, rushed down to the small farmtown after hearing about the news.

“[He] is a terrific young man, who is strong and seems to have terrific character,” said Dabakis. “I think the community is horrified … but I think they are absolutely determined that they are not only going to stop the attacks but are also committed to catching the perpetrators.”

Was It Good For The Gays: ‘Gayby'
If you’re going to make a movie about queer people, you’re likely going to get a divisive response. Does it reinforce negative stereotypes? Does it provide an accurate cross-section of the diverse LGBT community? How many think pieces will it incite? In this regular column, we’ll look at depictions of queers in cinema and ask, Was It Good For The Gays? Today we look at Jonathan Lisecki’s indie feature, Gayby.
