Oregon Senate Panel Passes Gay Conversion Therapy Ban: VIDEO

Oregon Senate Panel Passes Gay Conversion Therapy Ban: VIDEO

Southwick.Paul

The state-level push to ban gay conversion therapy continues to gain momentum in the wake of President Barack Obama’s watershed announcement that he supports outlawing the discredited practice.

Last week, the New York State Assembly passed a ban on gay conversion therapy. And this week, an Oregon Senate committee voted 3-2 to advance a similar bill. The Statesman Journal reported on the the committee hearing:

“When you are in conversion therapy, you are taught that you have a sickness, a pathology, and that you need a cure,” Portland resident Paul Southwick (above) said, choking back tears. “When the cure never comes, you are left even more anxious, hopeless and ashamed than when you started.” …

Opponents say the state shouldn’t interfere in family and religious matters.

“If we force kids to live homosexually if they don’t want to, that puts them in harm’s way,” said Jayson Graves, head of the Colorado counseling organization Healing for the Soul, who says conversion therapy worked on him.

“We’re not celebrated in this culture. We don’t have television shows about us saying look how great it is to be ex-gay,” Graves told the committee.

The measure now moves to the full Senate. If it passes, Oregon would become only the fourth jurisdiction in the US to ban gay conversion therapy, after California, New Jersey and Washington, D.C. Similar bills have been introduced in at least 18 states, but have stalled in Colorado, Hawaii, Maryland and Virginia.

Rick Santorum: If Bruce Jenner 'Says He's A Woman, Then He's A Woman'

Rick Santorum: If Bruce Jenner 'Says He's A Woman, Then He's A Woman'
Rick Santorum — yes, that Rick Santorum — says we should “love and accept” Bruce Jenner regardless of his gender.

“If he says he’s a woman, then he’s a woman,” the former Pennsylvania senator told reporters at the South Carolina Republican Party convention on Saturday, according to BuzzFeed. “My responsibility as a human being is to love and accept everybody. Not to criticize people for who they are.”

“I can criticize, and I do, for what people do, for their behavior,” he continued. “But as far as for who they are, you have to respect everybody, and these are obviously complex issues for businesses, for society, and I think we have to look at it in a way that is compassionate and respectful of everybody.”

Asked whether Jenner should be able to use women’s public restrooms, the potential 2016 presidential candidate said that he “doesn’t think the federal government should get into the whole issue of bathrooms.”

“I think those are things that the business community and local agencies and organizations should deal with,” he said.

The remarks are a complete shift in tone for Santorum, a culture warrior known for his stringent opposition to gay marriage and other LGBT issues. Earlier this month, he said he would not attend a wedding of a same-sex couple, even if it were for a loved one.

“I just felt like as a person of my faith, that would be something that would be a violation of my faith,” he said in a radio interview.

Note: Though Jenner has come out as “for all intents and purposes a woman,” he has not yet indicated that he would like to be known by a new name or female pronouns, so this story uses male pronouns.

Canadian Airbnb Renters Return Home to Find $60,000 in Damages From 'Drug-Induced Orgy' – VIDEO

Canadian Airbnb Renters Return Home to Find $60,000 in Damages From 'Drug-Induced Orgy' – VIDEO

Airbnb

A nightmare story out of Calgary, Canada that might make you think twice before renting out your home to strangers.

The Daily Mail  reports:

Mark and Star King rented out their property in Calgary, Canada, on popular website Airbnb and believed the holidaymakers would be four adults who were in town for a wedding.

But when they returned to their home, following concerned calls from neighbours, they were greeted with destroyed furniture, smashed glasses, used condoms and underwear strewn across the floor, barbecue sauce on the walls and every surface covered in rubbish.

A “huge luxury bus” with some 100 people had reportedly made the Star family home the site of what police called a “drug-induced orgy.” Repair costs are estimated at around $60,000 but Airbnb has pledged to cover the cost of restoration under its Host Guarantee insurance, which covers damages up to $1 million.

CBC reports:

Airb2b“They’re going to send in crews in full masks, taped up in order to deal with the contents,” said Star King’s husband, Mark (pictured right).

He was also told that any garbage leaving the home must be treated for biohazardous material before it can be sent to the landfill.

The Kings have also met with a hazmat specialist, who be will tossing “everything soft” — couches, bedding, towels and sheets — because there is no way to identify the various bodily fluids the renters left behind.

CBC adds police are still searching for the man who originally rented the house and may charge him with mischief to property over $5,000.

Gay NYC Hoteliers Reveal Why They Hosted a Ted Cruz Reception and Share Their Thoughts on the Growing Backlash

Gay NYC Hoteliers Reveal Why They Hosted a Ted Cruz Reception and Share Their Thoughts on the Growing Backlash

Cruz

In an interview with New York magazine, gay hoteliers Ian Resiner and Mati Weiderpass speak at length about their thoughts on the blowback following their intimate “fireside chat” and dinner with anti-LGBT Sen. Ted Cruz last week.

You’ll recall after news broke of the reception, gay organizations began to quickly pull out of fundraisers and events at establishments owned by the two NYC multimillionaires. Cruz himself also seemed to want to distance himself from the two in the wake of headlines, as he filed two new bills targeting same-sex marriage a short time afterwards.

ReisnerReisner told the magazine the negative reactions on Facebook and elsewhere deeply troubled him:

Besides the business aspect, for me the horrible part is the abundance of communications in all forms. Letters, calls, texts, emails, Facebook notifications, and postings. Like, hate. The hate against us is so strong, for me, it literally makes me weep. That there’s a vast group of gay folks in America that don’t know what I have done for the gay cause, consistently for decades, and now think I’m anti-gay. There’s such a massive divide between the reality of what we do, did and do, and their limited thinking of what we do because of a few facts and a few headlines.

Reisner added that in many ways the reception was only held so that Cruz could meet and discuss Israeli politics with Reisner’s business partner Sam Domb, an Orthodox Jew who watched his mother perish in the Nazi death camps during World War II.

The full interview, which can be read HERE, also touches on Weiderpass’s time in the army, naked Twister at the penthouse, why Reisner thinks gays are an “entitled” group and more.

Dear Justice Alito: Here's What Homosexuality Was Really Like In Ancient Greece

Dear Justice Alito: Here's What Homosexuality Was Really Like In Ancient Greece
In Tuesday’s Supreme Court hearings, which will determine whether the Constitution protects same-sex marriage and if states must recognize marriages from other states, notoriously conservative Justice Samuel Alito argued that it’s possible to approve of gay relationships but not same-sex marriage, using Ancient Greece as an example in which homosexual relationships were “well accepted within certain bounds.”

So we at HuffPost Live wanted to dig a little deeper to see if, in fact, Justice Alito had a point. Turns out, it’s a little more complicated than that. In the video above, Thomas Hubbard, a professor of Greek and Roman literature at the University of Texas and editor of Homosexuality in Greece and Rome, discusses same-sex relationships in Ancient Greece and what our gay brothers and sisters from way back when may have thought about same-sex marriage.
